Exclamation bsod on start up

i restarted my PC today because it was getting a bit slugish (had been on for 2 weeks streight)... when it was booting back up, it seems to pause for about 2 min on a blank screen insted of showing the login screen... then i get this BSOD error

c0000006 the instruction at 0x%p referenced memory at 0x%p. the required data was not placed into memory because of an i/o error status of 0x%x.

Running windows 7 ultimate 64-bit.

It would seem the hard disk is dying and/or has developed bad sectors.

A file system check may restore the operating system to a working state.

Hard drive is a good bet, but without knowing the machine (are we supposed to magically know the intricacies of every computer with no details?) it could also be a heat issue.

Was the shutdown immediately followed by the bsod reboot?
How hot was the RAM?
How hot were the internals?
Is the machine a desktop or laptop? Off the shelf or built? Overclocked?
Did you dump a bucket of water on it? Blow out the dust bunnies?

Lots of variables, with very little info to go on.

HD or an unreachable network share. There are several free downloadable bootable disks (cd's) that will check the hard drive for issues without generally disturbing the drive.
