Default Camera Choice

If you had to choose between the two, which one would you select - Canon VIXIA HV40 or Canon VIXIA HF S100. I know Ryan has suggested the HV40; however, I'm leaning towards flash memory. Pros and cons between the two?

I'm looking for a camera that has decent image quality, but is less than $1,000. I'm primarily using the camera for hobbyist film making.

Thanks!

wow...

Honestly i just fought this question myself last week.

on B&H they are both on sale at like $650 and $690?

I went with the HF S100, only time will tell how great she is but thus far i enjoy her and dont have to worry about MiniDV but i do understand some people love MiniDV.

But i still dislike the lack of a viewfinder but i also realize alot of people hardly use it.

Yeah...I'm not sure if I would miss the viewfinder.

Have you used the HF S100 in low light conditions? That's one of the biggest complaints I've read is that it does poorly in low light situations.

So far it does seem very lackluster, but you can always look into lighting(normally you will anyways)

Similar question: I can't decide between the HFM31 and say the HF21 or HV40. Is there any logic to the H* codes? I've heard that the HFS* are the top of the range, and the HFM the midrange, but some of the HF models cost more than the HFM, so wtf?

I can't quite stretch to a HFS series, any recommendations? Mainly shooting bluescreen studio with occasional outdoor work. Prefer SD to tape, and I'm a bit squirrely about touchscreens, esp if they stop being very responsive over time.

Cheers

Or, if I stretch the budget a little more: HFS20, or 550D/T2i? (for video)
