The anime industry has suffered due to fansubbing, but I believe that it was a necessary thing. The import anime industry enjoyed a nice monopoly on anime outside of japan during the 90's and early 2000's. If you wanted to watch anime you had to buy expensive VHS or dvds. For the most part you had no option of watching the series before hand and just had to hope that it wasn't crap.
Fansubbing just gives us the same option as those whole live in japan and allow us to watch a series and purchase dvd/blu-ray if we really enjoy the show. Yes because of this companies have taken a hit, but in the end it is cause they became bloated due to their long held monopoly. Yes sales have dropped, but in my experience Americans don't really but tv show dvds that much as much of us have a watch it and done mentality, only buying our absolute favorites. |

No it has been made before, but honestly i would rather post here than posting my opinion in the other thread and have someone say my ideas have already been brought up cause i didn't want to read the 9 pages of text.
If it is really a problem can't you just merge the threads Last edited by caboose22 : 06-01-2010 at 09:17 PM. |

UGH! I guess I'll elaborate on my views. First, is anime overpriced? Abso-friggin-lutely! Now, does downloading torrents and watching illegally streamed anime help? Not in the least! Thankfully, certain websites like Funimation's are streaming anime legally, so if you are unsure whether you want to invest in an anime, as far as buying discs is concerned, you can by all means view it there first. That's great! Now, as far as unlicensed anime? Well, I say that's fair game. After all, there's no way for you to purchase it in your own language if you wanted to. Shoot, I watch all kinds of unlicensed anime online, but once it is licensed state-side, you best believe I will be supporting it. The simple truth is, if you don't support it, it will go away. There is no magic money fairy that leaves thousands of dollars under the pillows of anime companies. If you want it, buy it. Otherwise, get used to reality tv and d-list celebrity dancing competitions, cause that's all you'll be left with.

BUZZZT! Wrong answer! Once an anime is licensed for North America that doesn't mean jack squat for me and many other people. Funimation's site is blocked in Canada and everywhere else. Thankful? Pfft. It's pointless.

Well, like I said for unlicensed anime, if it's not readily available, watch it online. I already said, I watch fansubs. The problem comes into play when people that have watched a series and love it still refuse to pay for it. Hey, I'm watching BECK right now online. I wish Funimation had it streaming, but they don't. However, as soon as it's released (this month, I believe) I'm going to be supporting it by buying the series on dvd.

I call bullsh*t on that statement you honestly expect me to believe that after watching 20 or so episodes into an anime once its licensed you quit watching and wait 6 months to a year to find out how it ends? I can believe people that watch fansubs first and then buy that same anime once its released here on dvd but anyone that says they stop watching an anime after its licensed is full of bs.
