Default Upgrading an iTouch from 2.2.1 to 3.1.2

I've got an iPod Touch, 2G, that is currently running firmware version 2.2.1. I want to upgrade it to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. I DO NOT WANT TO GO TO 4.X (am I emphasizing that enough?). I don't care if it costs $10 or what ever the upgrade was for an iPod when Apple went from the 2 series to the 3 series firmware.

Any way to do this? I could go to the nearest Apple store and ask, but seeing as how that store is a two hour drive away and talking to them on the phone is like having bamboo shoots driven under my nails, I thought I'd give this a shot first.

One more thing...and I will admit that this part is directed mainly at two or three certain people. I don't like the fact that Steve makes this hard to do any more than you do. But this is for a client, and you spouting off sermons from on high about how you do not buy controlled hardware like an iPod is not only not being helpful, it will annoy me and make me think of you as being an ignorant ass. If you can't be helpful here, then be silent

Here is a how-to link from Lifehacker. The page includes an embedded YouTube tutorial.

Here is a firmware page for the iPod Touch.

Good luck.

If Apple were to give me a million dollars, I would be happy to find a way to sing it's praises.

9/1/2010: Don't miss Steve Jobs' announcement today on cnn.com/live and CNN's app for the iPhone starting at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Unfortunately for me, Darth Steve makes it impossible to go to any version other than 4.0 from 2.2.1. (the methods used in the web pages that come up in Google and that everyone suggested here ceased to work with the release of 4.0). The only option here is to find an iPod still running 3.x (which is what we need) and buy it.

Thanks for (almost) everyone's input.

My niece has an ipod. I will ask what revision she has. Maybe it can be backed up. There is always more than one way to skin a cat. They also have two iphones in the family. After the new Appletv gets hacked, I might look at it.

I can't understand why the iPod Touch has to go from 2.2.1 to at least 4 and not be upgradeable to 3.x. Version 3.x firmware versions is on the linked page to iClarify.

I don't see why it won't either. But it fails the Apple authorization check in iTunes every time.

And this probably has something to do with it: When 3.x came out, existing iPod owners (notice I said iPod, not iPhone) running 2.x had to pay $9.something to upgrade. It was not free. 4.x however, is free even for iPod owners.
