They could go the route that fire benders did. In the series, the only "pure" fire benders was Zuko, Iro and the people on Dragon Island (I'm sure there are others from before the dragon purge). All the rest used their emotions/rage (Azula) to bend fire, so its possible to learn to bend other ways than the "original masters." Also, don't forget that blood and metal bending are forms that were variations from the original, so I guess anything is possible. |

and the Lion Turtle told Aang that before the era of the Avatar...they used to bend, not the elements, but energy.

Actually I kinda like the idea of the people living in the Northern Air Temple getting the ability to be airbenders, that would be kinda cool.
But honestly, if Aang and Katara had to two kids, who each then had two kids by the time they are 30 and so on, with at least one kid having the ability to airbend, then by 100 years you could have 5-9 people with that ability, at least. Yes he was the last airbender at that moment, but it appears that there is some heredity aspect to the skill and being descended from an Avatar would definitely increase the odds on that one. Plus, they killed all those that were in the Air Bending Tribes but did they really hunt out all those who married others outside the tribe and settled down there, especially if they didn't have bending abilities and therefore weren't noticeable? The Air Tribe were nomads so they were going to be travelling a lot and meeting other nations. And there was always part of me that wondered, is that why Zuko's mom was imprisoned. She might not be 100% Fire Nation and though the Fire Lord was an ass, he just couldn't kill his wife even though she was part Air Tribe. Maybe I think of these things because I am a mix breed too but if Aang and Katara can mix it up, why hasn't anyone else been doing it all along? |

well, Iroh did make it known to Zuko that he was also the descendant of Avator Roku...it does make one wonder what kind of bending descendants of avatars might inherit...the original, or any of the four? (While he was his great-grandfather...it wasn't specified whether he was on his mother or father's side...and if it could be any element, he could have relatives that could bend air.) yeah, wild speculation abound.

I'm pretty sure Roku was on the mom's side b/c Azulan was on Iroh and Kozi's side...Unless...I can't remember if Roku and Azulan married a pair of sisters. I feel like Jeff Goldblum right now.

Also, I think you're confusing Azulan with Sozen. Last edited by darthender : 07-18-2010 at 12:51 AM. |

Oops. Thanks for the correction.
Speaking of different bending forms/techniques I was always curious about Mai and Ty Lee. Besides the fact that they are very talented and well trained, is there any other reason behind their skills? For example Ty Lee utilizing pressure points to block chi and therefore block bending. I'm sure the skills were learned, but the inherent ability had to be there to begin with, just like bending. |

I remember when I finished watching all of Avatar, I was left wishing we could see what happened in the future. Avatar Roku and Ozai were friends at one point, and then everything went to shit, and Ozai got power hungry, because such is the cycle of fire. I like to think that Zuko would fall into the same pattern, I can do nothing but see the parallels between Roku/Ozai and Zuko/Aang. Everything is based on cycles, and patterns, Fire/Earth/Water and Air all act a certain way and you cant change nature. I would LOVE to see the future, where Zuko is a tyrant and the fire nation is back to spreading and destroying like, you know, fire does.
