Default Win7 to Ubuntu 10.10

Thinking of converting my Toshiba Satellite A135-S7404 from a windows 7 machine over to Ubuntu 10.10. I used Ubuntu a few years ago on my desktop then went back to windows when my kids couldn't figure it out because it wasn't windows.
Has anyone put this on their laptop and do you have any suggestions. did it find the touchpad drivers etc or what is a pain?
I use my laptop mainly for surfing the net (Google chrome), watching movies and tv shows (VLC), downloading things (utorrent) and watching REV3 podcasts (Itunes). I think all are compatible with ubuntu except itunes, but I saw a program called gpodder that can handle the podcasts. Any words of wisdom or suggestions?

Just get a liveCD and run it from CD to see what works out the box.

Ditto. Most all distros have live versions now. Shame MS does not do a free version that does that.

Ubuntu worked out of the box on my laptop with everything including the pad and the wifi for me out of the box. If something does not work, it might be because of patent aka legal issues.where ubuntu could not legally include the driver. Thank MS for that crap.

If you are running gnome,,Rhythmbox s/b compatible with itunes. I know it is with the older version of itunes. I think roku took over the Apple itunes compatible Firelfy music server. There was a fork for a new open source version but I have not tested rhythmbox with it yet since I do not use ITunes.

I have seen MSwindows users that could not use an Apple Macintosh either and visa versa. I know I had a mental block with the Apple os till I became familiar with it. You do all the same things but just a bit differently. If you understand the basics, and not just monkey see monkey do then there is usually a chance that learning a second os is much much easier. From my teaching experience I found that people who learn linux first usually do a better job learning other os's. My brother teaches computing at a local college. He includes linux in his classes so people do not get MS tunnel vision. More schools should do that.

That does not always work as with my laptop I had to run updates before I could download and active my wireless card. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501
