The DMCA recently added an exemption which made jailbreaking (i.e. installing unapproved applications onto your mobile device) completely legal. Not surprisingly, a lot of people are asking questions: Will it brick my phone? Is it safe to do?

Correction: Graham said that this is the first jailbreak that's like this. Actually, Jailbreakme was one of the original jailbreaking methods back when the iPhone 2G was released back in 2007.
"Will it brick my phone"? The chances are extremely low. The success rate of this jailbreak is probably 99.99999%. "Is it safe to do"? Yes. I consider myself to be a jailbreak evangelist - I want EVERYONE to jailbreak their device. It opens up a whole new world of possibilities that make iOS and its respective devices the best around. As mentioned in the show, if you don't like it, you can simply restore your device to factory settings in iTunes. |

What you neglected to mention on the show is how jailbreaking your iPhone affects regular iTunes usage in terms of buying apps, and normal syncing actions.
Can you please enlighten me? |

Jailbreaking doesn't mess with ANY of that stuff. Syncing with iTunes will be like normal (except you have Cydia on your homescreen).

So, after watching the jailbreak episode, I understand that syncing in Itunes is unchanged. I can still buy apps from the appstore, sync my files with my imac through itunes, manage my music library in itunes, etc. What I am unsure of is everytime I currently dock my iphone to my imac it backs up my phone. How do I SAVE a prejailbroken version of the iphone and protect it from being overwritten so if weeks, months, or a year later I want to restore I can do it?
Thanks in advance! |
