As far as routers are concerned, Hak5 last two episodes are about building your own router using open source software.
Darrin bought new hardware to do this, but I'm sure if you have an old PC laying around you could do this as well. Then essentially your only cost would be for an additional PCI NIC and a wireless NIC which would be much less than buying a pre-made router. Also, you would have a lot more options building your own. Just another option if you were interested in playing around |

happy bday to R3.
Good suggestion about using an old machine for a router. You can try the different modes and see what you like best. Those walls that will not transmit wifi very well might be a blessing in disguise for security reasons. We discontinued wireless for ethernet over power. Although we had decent experience with directional antennas and wifi. I have a standalone honeypotpc (p2 class) with a cheap antenna and get about 14+ g wireless stations from around the neighborhood. The at&t routers are the loudest so to speak. Traditional off the shelf routers could be a thing of the past soon with the low power pc's that are easy to upgrade. (i.e. you do not have to buy a new router every ten seconds. If you do get a router, get one that will take third party firmware ( i.e. supported longer than factory firmware for x amount of time) and usb. Then if the standard changes you can always use the units for home automation/control and other fun things. I am using , Airlink101 ar430w (aka early d-link router) with dd-wrt for doing some fun things. router plus network parallel port(i.e. hp jet direct) = awesome networked home control.) I do put buffalo routers just above linksys in router ratings. If you want something dirt cheap, get the fry's routers as they are d-links rebranded. I upgraded my g version with open-wrt. Already have a 1 gbit switch. Fry's g 19/95 (they were on sale for a while at 12.95) Fry's n 29.95.. Last edited by computoman : 07-02-2010 at 07:00 PM. |

Wow! After looking at the video mentioned by nav13eh, and also seeing a recent TNT (a Tom Merritt Twit.tv podcast) with Sarah Lane, where she also has a potty mouth episode w/ Tom about a iphone 4 "review unit" that she is using on the show (episode 19 btw), I'm convinced that there must be a iphone 4 "disease" going on. Especially with women! Although, I'm afraid it will spread to the men as well! In equation form, it would look something like this:
(Dropped iphone 4) + (Dropped calls on iphone 4) = (Bad attitudes) AND (Potty mouths!) Is it time to get a supply of soap to wash out all the potty mouths now? LOL!!!!!! Ok, bad joking aside, I always enjoy seeing any segments with Anand, Loyd Case, Will Smith as well as Jason Cross and Garnett Lee. I will ALWAYS watch the show anytime these guys are on! I own the Netgear WNDR 3700 router and couldn't be happier! Unlike Pat, I use the 5 GHz band so it doesn't interfere with my cordless phones in the house after getting dropped connections on my 2.4 GHz band 802.11G linksys router that I used to own, and it still has good range as well. I use the 2.4 GHz band for my wireless Canon MFP. ![]() Last edited by nunman62 : 07-02-2010 at 07:34 PM. |

Will 2nd the Buffalo WZR-G300NH and it works great. The range is pretty good, I can listen to streaming music on my cellphone from 4-500 ft away. I flashed it ddwrt and so far no troubles. I have 1 desktop 3 laptop and 2 cellphone on the router. Buffalo suppose to release a ddwrt firmware for the router sometime this month, hopefully then it will have the capability to access/share ntfs drives.

Hey about getting quiet pc try getting a fan less graphics card, about 50 to 150 bucks for the serious gamer. also a new hard dive are now super quiet, or be very daring an get a monster CPU cooler and no fan. my CPU Q9400 runs at 3100 Ghz at 49 c .... i have notice just open your case in a silent room and get up close turn on and listen...(don't touch anything) the loudest noise should be the one thing you need to change. Great show guys.

I'm disappointed in the shoutout to Dell given in this show, especially with their reputation for quality being so transparently bad.

The older brown p3 dells although a closed architecture were not a bad machine I still have a few still running fine. I worked at an institution where we had to swap hundreds of mb. hd and ps' on those pieces of crap.optiplex and later machines. We used to send in for warranty parts just before the end of the warranty. If you did not the machine would die within one day of the warranty going out. I kid you not. Talk about planned obsolescence, they had it down to a "T" I eventually bought a used one hoping it had been fixed and was screwed over. I would not own a new Dell. I do know that Michael Dell had allegedly released control of the company. After all that he took the reigns back from what I am told. The Dells maybe better now, But I will not spend money on a closed architecture again. Unless I pretty much acquired it free. Give me a COTS system any day.. Since Dell screwed over it's American workers and went overseas is another reason not to do business with them. It breaks my heart to not support a Texas born company. The management that directed that fiasco should be treated like any carpet bagger.
