On 11/5/10 Apple INC. announced their intention to discontinue the Xserve server line as stated at http://www.apple.com/xserve/resources.html.
This choice by Apple INC. will negatively affect Apple's presence in the enterprise and educational space by leaving current Xserve owners no reasonable upgrade path. Mac OS X administrators and deployment specialists need a server product that addresses the following criteria to continue making Mac OS X and iOS devices work on an enterprise level: * A server solution that is rack mountable * A server solution with redundant power supplies * A server solution with out-of-band management While the Xserve line may not be as commercially successful as Apple wants, the product is very important to bringing other Apple products into enterprise and educational settings. The Xserve also is also a green product that provides enterprises a powerful and responsible platform that the Mac Pro Server alternative does not. Mac OS based administrators find this announcement also makes no assurance about the future of the Mac OS X Server software platform. I work for a small liberal arts college and the Xserve and Mac OS X Server are important to our work. If you feel similarly please visit: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/bringbackxserve/ Sign the petition if you want to and forward to other interested parties. Thanks! |
