Whatever program you use to recover data always make sure you recover to a separate drive. Actually, this sounds like a job for linux to me because you can mount the drive read-only to make sure you don't accidentally write to the drive.

I don't care if a store offers top of the line i7 laptops for a dollar, and sex with the 8 women of my choice while they box it up. I do not enter stores on Black Friday. Saving a few bucks is not worth dealing with that many inconsiderate idiots all crammed in to one building. Nothing makes me think of Christmas and the little baby Jesus like watching two adults beat the snot out of each other over the last Barbie Doll.

And I agree with Robert...if you want "One Box To Rule Them All", your only real choice right now is a home theater PC.

Anybody experience problems with the video about 3/4 through the show where the video just freezes but the audio is still running.

Not sure why but it did for this episode which i downloaded using getmiro. It was the quicktime hd quality btw.

The remote on the boxee box is perfect in size and you don't need to have your fingers on the back to support the controller because its light. This eliminates the amount of errors you get from pressing the menu button.

Also, the lack of Netflix, Vudu, and Hulu Plus is a big negative at launch. However, if you are buying it for someone for the holidays those things will be in place by the end of the year. It's also worth mentioning that if you have PlayOn you gain access to Netflix and Hulu (the real Hulu) right now. They've built a platform for developers to create apps and provide content in a very user friendly way. They just need to the content providers to implement their solutions. Once you have Netflix and Hulu, you won't have to deal with the clicking to full screen. It's also important to mention that the CEO went on livestream to answer questions about these things and said they will be putting out a weekly update to address these issues and will possibly offer a new remote with backlighting in the future.

Overall, the Boxee Box was a good purchase especially for some of the third party repositories that you probably aren't allowed to talk about on this segment. I like the fact that it is an easy platform for developers and if they successful expand it you could see a significant uptick in HTML 5.0 applications that consolidate all the video catalogs.

Data recovery isn't a big and scary thing until you get to physical faults with the drive so don't be afraid! The show recommenced a lot of great progams, i am just gonna chip in with the order i go about using them myself(may not be the best but ive had pleanty of success in similar situations).

Start off with testdisk, there is a chance that this will be able to rebuild your old partition as it was before you formatted it and you will have your data back as if nothing had happened. Found a nice step by step guide with screenshots:

If that fails the next step is to try and undelete your files.

Just ignore the bit about the boot sector recovery at the bottom of the page, it is not relevant in your situation. That's for if the drive was in use running windows off it. If that guide looks a little daunting though under windows run GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/) it is pretty much as simple as next, next, next and goes about it in exactly the same way as testdisk would be trying to recover files.

If that doesn't work(and i would be surprised if it didn't in this situation) i would move on to is called foremost. This is how ever a linux program. I did a quick search and have seen references to a windows version of this but couldn't find it so with a built more searching you may be able to find that. This will find any last trace of files that are on that drive but it will not have their file names(photos still have their meta data i believe but not 100% on that). For a guide on that and quite a few other things for linux this is a handy guide to get started:

While not really needed in this case but just for the sake of being complete if i have any suspicion that the drive its self is defective/dieing i always start off creating an image of the drive. This is a bit for bit copy(ie it copies every 0 and 1, it doesn't care about the files them selves). Just be aware you need a drive of equal or greater size to create this. If you have a 500gb drive you will need that much space to back it up to(even if you only had 100gig worth of data on there). The tool i use for this is again linux and is also explained in the previous guide and that is ddrescue. With the help of that and the above tools you can make say people who dropped their laptop containing their only copy of their baby photos very happy.

So go out there one and all and get your files back with out spending a penny(cent, or other currency of choice). If any of that is unclear(likely knowing me) feel free to ask away.

ps. may be worth noting that the linux tools can be ran directly from a live CD of the operating system with out worrying about having to install it. Ubuntu is a good one to get started with if your new to linux but feel free to look around. there are plenty to choose from.
