Have you thought about something like a Samsung bluray player?
They do everything you just asked about, plus they play bluray discs.
They will read a local drive, some have hacked firmware files that extend playback capabilities if you really need it, they are dnla equipped so they will stream from things like iTunes or vuze on another computer, have pandora installed, etc, etc.

Just another option to consider.

Yes, BR needs hdmi for hdcp for most discs, but if the player also has component out you can play regular DVDs, and be ready for when you get a tv that works with hdmi.

Why not get a Boxee or something similar? You'll get all kinds of great content, even if you don't sub to Netflix or Hulu.

I've been thinking of getting the 8" one for my wife as an alarm clock /w weather and Internet radio ... So we can get a decent NPR feed (our local affiliate sucks). The fact it is based off chumby Linux makes it attractive - it's not exactly a standard distro, but was designed for this type of device.

Our local NPR affiliate also stinks. They only play about half the NPR/PRI/BBC content/shows that you'd get from a major affiliate in a large city. Then they fill in the rest of the day with classical music. Better than nothing, I suppose.

Most major stations have internet feeds you can listen to without having to only use the local station.

Which is Ok while you are at your desk, but unless you sleep with the computer it sucks as an alarm clock ... Which is hy I liked the insignia devices you linked. More alarm clock form factor than pc. Being Linux based should mean I could modify the alarm clock app if needed to pull a feed instead of local song. Maybe even add in the "soothing white noise" type sleep mode our current alarm has.

This doesn't really help the op though ... They are looking for more an STB type solution than a standalone solution.
