I really don't think Patrick should have started the show with "FreeBSD - it's got problems". One viewer had a question about a very specific use of FreeBSD, and clearly knows more about it than anyone on the show anyway. It is certainly not that FreeBSD has something wrong with it.

For that viewer, they should really be asking on a mailing list or just the FreeBSD forum, where they will get an accurate and useful answer quickly from people who actually know what they are talking about. Many of the actual developers and contributors will even answer questions there and they have a very deep understanding of the subject matter.

For the question itself, it is possible that one of the samba instances is just configured incorrectly. In my experience a bad configuration file is mainly noticeable by a lack of shares showing up on the network. It is also possible that a shared process is not available to one of the jails but is to the other. Personally, I just avoid jails completely. Anywhere where I actually need virtualisation, I use something like VMware ESX (Xen may work but I find that it is best for Linux guests only). For a home server you really shouldn't need isolation of services, and short of a kernel panic they shouldn't bring each other down anyway.

If you don't need something specific to FreeBSD it may be worth migrating to a distribution of Linux such as Debian. Personally, I am only using FreeBSD because it has ZFS and OpenSolaris being screwed up by Oracle's takeover of Sun.

I agree in theory with the guy who wants a TV without all the fancy stuff. I'm a "one device, one job" kind of guy. I don't want a TV with a built-in net computer...I have a computer for that.

But Pat and Robert hit the nail on the head. Its getting to where you just can't buy devices without all the bells and whistles any more. I don't want a DSLR that does video, I have a camcorder for that. But that's now a feature on almost all cameras, even my point-and-shoot that lives in the glove box of the car does HD video. I don't need the camcorder to shoot still images, I have the other cameras for that. But try and find a good prosumer HD camcorder that does not also shoot stills. Won't happen. And if I use my smartphone for anything other than making a phone call more than twice a month its an unusual month, but most non-smartphones also suck as a telephone so I carry a smartphone.

Everyone (except me and 9 other people around the world) want Swiss army knife devices, and that's what the market is responding to.

Wish Pat would stop talking about the the 'nix's. as he has no clue what he is talking about. Where is the we will get the experts to answer the question promise to be fulfilled.

Blame Microsoft for the problems with samba, not Freebsd or Linux. There are a lot of gotcha's with samba. So easy to shoot yourself in the foot. We do not even use it any more. You really need to know about Microsoft networking (whence samba aka cifs was derived).to implement it correctly. If Microsoft did not keep changing things for the sake of change only, samba would not be so bad to deal with.

Networking was great and easy until the media industry got involved. They done nothing but hog it (bandwidth flood) and bully everyone out of it with extortionist type fees.

I agree, but the way devices are built are implemented so horribly. You wonder where they derived their tech/engineers from. Today's technology although cutting edge, is really a joke by traditional standards. All the commercials depicting who does not have reliable connections is a testament to this.

Dear industry:
Build something that does one thing well and do not add anything until until each part to be added works well also on it's own. Where has pride in craftsmanship gone?

Go Go FreeBSD!

Ok time to stop being such a lurker and actually contribute.

I have to agree with ghelyar and davisan on several fronts.

-I strongly disagree with "FreeBSD - Its got Problems". FreeBSD is a solid OS! I myself it for just about everything: web servers, NAS, Router, DVR, Desktop - you name it. What should have been said was "FreeBSD - ...Say what?".

-Samba. Its not perfect [because windows isn't perfect], but it works and its better than anything I could possibly create so I still tip my hat to the Samba team.

-The mailing list/OS specific forums are the #1 way to solve the majority of problems, sign up & check them out.

Honestly, I think his best bet is to remove the need for a 2nd samba. If the first one works fine, just keep everyone in their home directories and maybe setup quotas if you want to limit specific users. Rule #1: Keep It Simple, Stupid.
