Dan,
The volunteering is about you leveraging D3P0 and doing something responsible and meaningful. It would be good to have an interview of the Directors or Reps about the charities. Charities have had a real BAD couple of years due to the economy. This is a great way for you to not just give time, but raise awareness and support. Managing is a great idea, however, It would be good for you to assist or "feature" different charities. Maybe One Brick does that, and that would be a great vehicle for you to assist multiple charities and leverage the "tribe" and viewers to support charitiy in general. Too, think about not just local charities, but mix in those too with a national presence. So think about making this more about video content for you to do something but take it to a higher level. |

I agree that in one way it might be a good idea to become one of the managers, however you need to be careful not to overload your plate. Perhaps what you should do, is go to a few of the events, and shadow current managers and see how much is really involved. Don't commit until you feel absolutely comfortable with the organization and what they do.
I have had some fantastic times volunteering my time, but I have also been in the situation where it sounded good at first, but was overwhelmed when I found out how much they wanted me to do as a volunteer. I think that you will find volunteering more to your benefit than D3PO. It gives you great interaction with new people, new skills and just let you have a great time! I know how hard it is being in a new place, with not a lot of interaction. Have patience. Good things will come! |
