Really enjoyed this episode, wish I had a CNC machine like Ben's.

Bought a couple of 100watt peltier devices last year but never got further than tinkering with salvaged PC heatsinks & fans, but I did make ice by putting a heatsink on the hot side of the device and putting that in cold water and turning it on, then any drops of water you put onto the cold side wuiwill turn to ice, until the heatsink water gets too hot and the peltier effect doesn't work so well.

Not suprised he used such large heatsinks on the peltier devices, the ones I have can pump out a serious amount of heat, enough burn you after a while without a heatsink that has a fan on.

I'd like to make some sort of aircon device using them for summer but I fear the cost and complexity to get something usefull will be more than buying a proper portabla unit!

agreed.

I probably would have designed mine a little different. Perhaps an aluminium cup (that just fits the can) filled with salty water. That way the water could assist help cool the can even further. Not sure how effective it would be though (without testing)

A peltier might work well for a cpu cooler, if it didn't condensate.

heaps of reviews online about this. Condensation (and electricity consumption) ruins it though.

I've got a small 24watt solar panel and when summer finally arrives (go away winter & spring!) I'm going to try hooking one of my peltier devices directly to the output of the panel, no battery inbetween, to see how well it works. I suspect I'll need a panel 3-4x the size for any decent cooling capabilities.

Some one could integrate one of these into the cup holder in their car, keep your soda cold on a hot summer day. Or maybe reverse this to keep your coffee hot in the winter...
