It feels like the worst parts of various bad movies put together. I'm not sold at all.

I just got in from seeing this and I say screw the critics. It completely feels like all sorts of 60s sci fi flicks in all the right ways. I'm buying this thing on blu ray for sure... well... as long as the blu ray prices in canada don't continue to sit at the $40 mark... if they are around there I'll be buying it from the US and having it shipped up here. Anyway.... I might even see it on a big screen again if I can find a place that's still showing it.

I completely agree. I thought it was a blast. Fun and thrilling. Way better than most summer blockbusters like Transformers et al. Solid acting all around. I recognized a couple acting veterans from the HBO series Rome, and leads Taylor Kitsch (as Tim Riggins... um, I mean John Carter) and Lynn Collins (as Dejah Thoris) carried the film nicely. I loved the bookends on Earth.

I do agree with Alex that it would have been better if it had been spread over two movies instead of compressed into one, but, while it's not a flawless movie, I couldn't disagree more with Jeff. It pains me to say that because I usually agree with his movie sensibilities, but I think he's very wrong in his labeling this a "bad movie." It seems to me that many of Jeff's complaints about John Carter are shared with Captain America, but Jeff was able to overlook the flaws in Captain America because of his affinity with the source material. I'm not sure why Jeff and Alex couldn't "get into" John Carter, but I definitely did. When John Carter is being attacked from all sides by hundreds of Tharks and the footage is intercut with him burying his wife and daughter, that was a really powerful moment. If you're on the fence, I urge you to give it a try.

How cool that Michael Chabon contributed to the screenplay! I didn't even know that until I saw his name in the end credits. He's one of my favorite authors, and his screenplay for Spider-Man 2 is still the benchmark of the superhero movie genre.

If you have clear eyes and a full heart, you can't lose by seeing John Carter.

yeah, how the hell do transformers movies do so well and John Carter which imho is a serious kick ass movie is failing.

When there are no sci fi movies in the theaters you can recall this point in time when you were too lethargic to go see this movie as the point at which movie producers decided to further pull back from the genre.

I'd say Transformers is a bit more (okay, completely) convoluted. John Carter had an entirely cohesive story (and I agree with the guys about the bookends) but it was 100% by-the-numbers. Beautiful on screen? Of course, and I saw it in 3D IMAX. I think the problem, at least for me, is that I've seen this story, and these archetypes repeated so many times since the original writing of this story that it's just plain boring at this point. Like I said though, beautiful film and the visual effects were seamless. It's dumb fun but expecting anything else from a movie with four armed green aliens would be silly anyway.

I still don't get why it is now ostensibly the biggest flop of the last few years, it's well worth seeing if you have seen a similar flick.

I'm probably going to go see it today because its my last chance to see it on an IMAX screen.

EDIT: Saw it, liked it, not sure how much, and I'm pretty sure its not good, but I like it. Also, I think its the best CGI I've ever seen in a movie, ever.

I saw it and liked it, but I'm well aware that it wasn't necessarily a good movie. When I left the theater I was kinda excited about what the next movies would be about, but it's unlikely we'll ever know. Unfortunate that this gets overlooked entirely yet people line up for days to see utter shit like Twilight.

Totally agree about the cgi, though. 'Twas awesome.
