Just saw it tonight. Would highly recommend to anyone that likes meta horror/comedies. Really fun and entertaining romp. Avoid spoilers if you can!

I got to see this movie at BNAT without knowing anything about it and it was SO awesome. So scary & funny & smart! Saw it again in theaters, took my little sister without telling her anything about the movie. She didn't like it so much, but I think that's because she isn't that into horror films. Fran Kranz gives a great performance. He was awesome in Dollhouse too.
I think going into it thinking it's just a straight horror movie and not knowing that it's "meta" in any way is better. SEMI-SPOILER UNDERNEATH!!! In the beginning of the movie, the two control room guys mention that the last time the US base made a mistake was in 1998. Does anybody know what movie they're referring to? |

Only relevant thing I found off of imdb was The Cabin (1998). Seems to work according to the start of the synopsis, "Six teenagers go up to an old cabin in the woods for a vacation get-away. When they get there, strange things start happening."

Fucking loved it. Probably my favorite movie of the year so many cool little things in there with the humor, meta-stuff, references, cool actors, etc. I didn't know it was co-written by Whedon but I could tell a few minutes in, especially with the Dollhouse actors in it.

To stay as spoiler-free as possible I'll just say that horror films typically always piss me off. There are always characters that didn't deserve to die and that level of macabre/noir always puts me off. This film however, properly and fully redeems itself in every way. Past that it felt like every 20-30 minutes the screenwriters said, "How can we push this even further?" and it definitely pays off. Few modern films take this many risks with storytelling and genre.

What makes it meta ? Bonus points: give me your answer, meta, in meta, referring, meta-ly, ish.

Having not seen the movie...I will say the review as a bit irritating, having said we might want to avoid the trailer, they show the trailer in the background during the non-spoiler part of the review.
