PixelPerfect episode 3 and the pen tool

I'm using Photoshop CS2 on windows XP and when i first start with the pen tool a new layer is created called Shape1 and after i complete the lamp shade and start with the body each time i put an anchor a new layer is created (Shape2, Shape3 etc..)
anyone know how to fix this so it's like in the tutorial?
(all is done in the background layer)

i noticed on the top i had it on Shape layers instead of Paths
