Default DC’s latest imprint: Zuda

I was looking through the articles on IGN.com when I found this little juicy piece of information.

DC is making a web comics web site!

The full article is in the link. This sounds really unique and fantastic! Here's a quote basically summing it up, it's not like anything else I've ever heard of before.

Quote:
'What is Zuda?' is a huge question. In short, it's a new online imprint from DC Comics, designed and built specifically for all original web comics. Users can come to the site and read comics all day for free or, once they register, can build their own profile page and interact with the comics on a variety of levels - from simply reading, discussing and rating to voting and having a editorial voice and decision-making power in what Zuda Comics will publish. Not only that, but the users can submit comics as well. Those comics will be vetted by the Zuda editorial - because, you know, we have to weed out things like pictures of people's family or other random things they might upload. We'll then organize the best submissions into competitions.

Each month we'll post 10 of the submissions to the site for the community to review and offer feedback and vote. The most popular web comic will get signed for a one-year contract. We'll do this every month - 10 new "limited series" and, following that, one new "ongoing series." So 'What is Zuda?' is pretty open-ended. It's web comics, but really it's a community for web comics fans, readers and artists deciding what they want it to be. We're going live with a preview site in July, timed with Comic Con. That way people will be able to pre-register for membership and get updates about our progress as we develop the site itself. The full site, with content and all of the features and functions I just mentioned -- and more, will go live in October.
This sounds so cool I'm totally going to get into it

it must be nice being owned by a big corporation like AOL time warner, it lets DC create a million and one imprints for any random reason they can think of

Read about this in Newsarama as well. I think it's a good idea, and if I could actually come up with an interesting story to tell, I'd submit something as well. I've always wanted to try making an online comic, and this looks like a great starting point. Now all I need is an idea

That random reason being finally recognizing the internet and webcomics many years after the fact?

This is long past due for Marvel or DC.

This is a really good idea. It's about time that they recognized the webcomics. Some of them are better then what actually makes it to print.

Not only that, DC will be able to use the site as a Minor farming league. They'll be able to scout for talent all the while making money off the ad revenue from an active website. Kind of a win-win for them.

With DC finally admiting there is a world of comics online, I wonder how far off are they from truly acknowledging Digital Distrubution.

Anyone know what types of things are going to be published? Most webcomics publish daily, and are just small funny stories, sticking to a loose continuity, rarely involving superheroes. Is it going to be things like this, or things that DC would actually put out, just online?

While I think new original content more akin to the typical webcomics of today is what's going to be expected, I'm really hoping they experiment with this within the DCU. I mean something along the lines of Giffen DeMatteis Justice League would read great as a webcomic.

I think there are a few untapped characters that could do good in a humorous webcomic. Plastic Man maybe? Harley Quinn? The combination of Ragdoll and Parademon from Villains United would be good.
