Linux Mint
Opera (alternative browser) works great on Ubuntu 8.04 and up.
Also, Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distro that absolutely rocks. Most apps, tips & tricks for Ubuntu wil also work in Mint.

I'm not sure if it has been posted previously but for installing things from source I have found CheckInstall to be very useful.
