They're a part of our everyday life, but how much do you know about how the light bulb came into being? Who invented it? You might be surprised...

Thomas Edison gets almost all the credit for the light bulb in the US, but in the UK and elsewhere, the contributions of Sir Humphrey Davy, Frederick de Molyens, and several others are acknowledged. Edison was in fact involved in ongoing patent disputes for six years before things were settled in his favor.
Surprisingly, fluorescent lights were experimented with as far back as 1856, but it wasn't until 1934 that GE started putting the lights into commercial production. LED history goes back to 1907, with the first practical one developed in 1963. The development of the white LED in 1995 opened the door for them as replacements for incandescents and fluorescents.
Organic LEDs (OLEDs) are now common as displays for televisions and computers. OLEDs are a sheet of light producing material rather than a bulb and major companies are working on developing them as the next step in household and business lighting. LED-based lights are available, but the price is high, often too much for the standard consumer. But cost decreases are already happening.
