Building a free VoIP PBX in under 10 minutes - Start programming a USB Development Board for less than $20 - and Ron Gula of Tenable Network Security

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 – running time 44:19
Building a free voice over IP phone system could never be easier. Matt shows us how to setup a 3CX PBX in under 10 minutes. Ever wanted to program a development board? Darren gets started with a USB based kit for under 20 bucks. And Ron Gula, CEO and CTO of Tenable Network Security joins us to talk about Nessus, PVS and more.

Get started programming a USB development board for under $20

Programming a development board can be very exciting but it doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Especially when you have the Arduino integrated development environment and community as a resource.

In this segemnt I get started programming the Teensy USB Development board. This inexpensive board ($19 USD) from PJRC comes with cross platform software that makes it simple to load programs, read debug code and even integrate with the Arduino IDE.

In my segment I demo compiling under linux, the software loader, and integrating with the Arduino IDE. I plan to use this board for future projects including the HakHouse Rover. If you have ideas for other projects be sure to let me know!

" Coming up on the show. Government program development Darren Scott and you -- they hit -- when he. Looking for an easy to implement small business I keep yes outlook that would top ten minutes or less. And Ron glass CEO int see you at temple network security joins us about that can block all that in time -- On this episode -- that side. Episode of -- is brought to you by daddy Netflix squares space. And you -- you know everybody welcome this week's episode of Hak5 Iron Man last night and they're content and -- we are not serious."

" That's what you get. A new nickname every week honestly like --"

" Well. Wouldn't."

" Let's as a."

" Here and this is the show all about technology and tech analyst and happy awesome stuff and we are doing that built -- this -- just about. -- My usual and my response on every one of these work yeah. It's. An option. Yeah. Yeah yeah. I again the CTO right now and and it's exciting to me it just means. More work during the week and you're -- call weekends you no longer has yet. Now. I wish you know we're bound to. Go as football all of them this could fall off the map tomorrow we don't know. -- That. There is that were like president. And it adds that there's likes. -- The tank and and the reason he. So little led him except. I don't care they work for you guys and kind to me. Think -- Geeks that geeks now."

" Place that you never ordered. From anymore BK is something -- and right."

" Yep well this is this is not a itsy bitsy teeny micro wireless -- is it now this is. The the only thing it's good for is just night vision at night vision works really well on if you why -- that okay yeah. In fact. These want to we hope to have house. Up with higher early days they happened actually this Sony's that we have we have that undermines. You want mama. -- Now we're not that -- uncomfortable fun stuff sorry I don't have the web cam or this. Tank project yet but. X ten -- an asterisk. And legitimately why can't they -- because after playing this on what we're here on it before it premieres. Yeah there's a lot like I have here and LT nine and I'll be there is when people with cordless land mines. -- And went from like mile from like 2549. 70900. To two point 455. I like it. When that phones for the live is. -- Eternity angster -- over here this case there. Martin has oh. -- You guys you laptop and -- ladies and hasn't oh. --"

" So as part of building Austin a packed house rover tank USB powered dealing with Austin us. A kind of figured that. I really need to start learning how to develop form that it platforms and sort of take a look out there and it seems that there's just really popular thing on on. These are between -- at some. A bit of experience playing with can I like that between nano up in Canada -- recently. I found this sweet little. Kind of like aren't we know compatible itch but not necessarily. Sanctioned. Type USB development board called. It teensy. This teensy if freaking sweet okay. First off the price like nineteen dollars so you can't go wrong it's USB powered. And it's very similar to I -- its most terrible to the -- we have nano publicity with the features are. Looks kind of like this right. It's got the same sixteen megahertz AVR processor than you'd expect find unlike a magnet board. And when he -- digital inputs and outputs here you can pick it up in either version with out. The believe here or one with the leads ready for -- like nineteen dollars and 22 dollars so I guess that pretty freaking cheap. It's got sixteen kilo bytes of memory a case that's divided up into fifteen and a half K of flash memory. And about 512 bytes of ram. It reminds me cool idea and -- days. Four point 77 megahertz PT XT. Anyway unfortunately it doesn't have any analog port which is kind of very disappointing because. I really wanted to do like he he the like twelve fret button and it's hard mod -- that that Paul and maps it up all night. Given and the third season wired in with one of these guys he can just like jam without actually having it connected to anything maybe public speaker and side of -- like. -- but. And it but I can happen with this board but still great little board to get you started if you're each student programming electronics and stuff. It has two modes first there is the boot loader med which is running how okay boot -- And then the second -- is the user mode where your actual program runs to switch between the two notes you'll see that they're actually. A little micro switch here. And we even have an embedded LEV -- linking on this board here about the current that comes with the chip when you first you know. Getting in the mail and plug it in. Via USB. USB okay that's another very important thing about the sport well a lot of -- do we know like boards. May use USB interface of the computer what happens is that the use a USB to serial chip on the chip on the on the board -- that'll actually translated. Too late thirties 400 -- forget the baud rate anyway the serial. This is an actual USB device that shows up as you as human interface device. And that's how we can listen to it output and right stepped through and all sorts of fun stuff so. That's kind of an an interest in neat feature that we will take you know much closer look at in a future segment. But first let's go ahead and get you started. This is compatible with the hats off. Or for windows for Mac and for Lennox and since you aren't -- big switch this season we're gonna go ahead and put it together in that acts are right. Now there a couple of different programs. That you can that you can use this namely comes with. The teensy litter application both the Dewey and a command line version ninety -- person here. -- A little teensy. And as what it looks like -- we have this as little window here and it says press the button to activate because right now it's in use elements that we can actually. In a program talked -- anything so I'm gonna go ahead reach over here. And just. Press the button there it'll -- flashing. When a look at my PC all the sudden we have you know. We can see the chip and it says that is running blink faster hacks your percent used very small program that actually our usage of remembering. And let's go ahead and the next thing is okay so that's how we actually load the applications we can just get file. Open hex file and then click over here to program the device and then to reboot the virus would just press -- to change into Yzerman. The other applications the need to get started with this guy is a GCC compiler for DAV the AVR processor. It will compiled C or C plus plus code into a text file that he is -- upload. So let's go ahead and make one of this. Actually have only examples here and I'm gonna go in to. Link di. And here we go I have. You know the C code and I could go ahead she -- that looks like for pulling key. It's not super exciting but basically what it does is. Blinks Morse code out of the embedded LEV so go ahead make that just simply make there's already a make file for. Compiled pretty quickly and come over here to the loader. An open that text file. That's horrible. And can see. -- And there is the twinkie tax. Open that. Program it goes pretty quick. And reboot the device. And as you can see over here it's actually blinking SOS. That that. That the dot. Okay. And then it'll actually blink a message for people that might actually be familiar with Morse code. Here's -- museum Clinton -- questions so. The other interesting thing is like I said it's heated. Device so we actually have a hit listener. For all the platforms and what happens is it actually speaks back to the computer so in your C code if you do like. As a print LN. -- can -- out -- actually bright that you're -- you can see you know it's great for debugging. But the neatest thing is like -- said it's not. -- technically. We're officially sanctioned as like in -- do we know but it's close enough and you can run a lot of -- sketches. As long as they don't require an analogue input or output but still we can use -- we know integrated development environment which is really powerful and really neat piece of software so school had load that up. See what happens here is. And back here. The argue we have software. Is neat because it allowed us to program multiple boards. There's actually of a program written by the guy that does. The teensy called teaching do we know which is kind of like a plug in a -- that allows us to use the yard we know sketch an application here. To interface for the sport so I've already got it programmed in here party can install the basically what happens when you run this installer. On like -- said any of the platforms you get where's it cools and then board and then listed we'll actually see the teensy USB serial. And I have less kept loading here I am wondering if this is the -- one yes this is. I get a little bit of help here from our friend and fan but. Basically this application is going to do fine on tight you know room with readily these that I appear on the bread board. The big the only real difference between this and lakes and the sample applications that you'd find in -- land development environment is the top part here where we actually define. A lot of these different hands so -- say okay you know in. Right here we have. And these three. Is actually let's just call that degree and in -- COK eight and nine and one that's we just have to define those. Once we have -- to find. We want to go ahead and keep the loader running. Remember I've got this. Seem to -- here. And I'm gonna click the button here called auto automatic mode is really me. All have to do is put into automatic -- come over here too they aren't we know development environment. And -- per unloaded here and I'm gonna click the play button which is a verified right. You can see it's compiling the code. -- about twice the area compiling code it's done compiling. Now I just have to press that little button there on the the TT and it will go into. The okay boot -- mode and then you can NT loader application will detect it and automatically load of that application so let's go ahead. And take a look here when -- press this. Button and area it detects it it loads it."

" That's so cool."

" Clicks on. Well there's silent influence here and I can in the in the cast members on the sure thing. You know that's that's pretty much it if we're able to use in the development environment. With it very inexpensive board like it's at nineteen dollars and planet over PJ RC. Dot com as well as a whole bunch of other on electronic projects I'm going to be doing a lot more on stuff with this board. Here incoming projects and tying it in meeting with the -- house rover so definite recommend you check it out. At PE RC dot com. And I want to let you guys know that we have excellent segment coming up soon. IP telephony maps can be showing us how to put together a free IP PBX system for your small office or home office in the ten minutes or something but first gonna kick it over to Shannon and see what's going on in this -- Lan parties."

" I know last month we have a whole bunch of zombie games Korea and I gotta say -- It was pretty -- apps. This month or playing these searches in -- by going to be playing on March 28 at 3 PM eastern and you can join us in the game that insurgency I have five hours. Where it cannot really into the whole insurgencies. You can go and vote for your favorite game crap has finally and that's where myspace.com. And I have to thank our sponsor. State's list where space you can -- to build rich dynamic website without expensive desktop software or complex has. For example syndicating RSS feeds from your other online presence like sweaters. Is as easy as clicking ad widget -- RSS and filling out a few details. Check out all the other intuitive features in the demo videos -- square space dot com. Wednesday dollars month isn't you can get 10% off the life of your contract by using -- K five. We haven't any of you coming up with the envelope compatible. First I'm gonna throw it over the masters of IP TV yet."

" Sorry guys that daily show you how to implement a very cost effective IP PBX. Now -- to cost effective depending on your needs we've got a free option or we've got a commercial options. Just depends on what features that you actually need to be installing this in your house. The free version of the software three CX is indeed just fine call park you know and transfer. You know any of that other Microsoft Exchange of seven immigration problem. Don't need it. Or do is we're gonna set up things an example IP PBX here in the house in nominee try to do it in under. Ten minutes tech right here we got three CX dot -- where you go and find the software. -- come over to your windows based machine yes it is a windows IP PBX software rated double click on the installer which is about."

" And."

" Want to save forty megs or so. We're gonna run it and an extract. It's looking for all the stuff. And next you can solve this on XP pro or server 2003 -- every got in around house. And reflect next week and next and next. And we are gonna use the bundled web server which they include Cassini if you don't have IS installed on your machine then that's fine. -- Cassini which is what we're gonna do and we're gonna install. And that's going through its motions what we're gonna do. Is make note of the server IP address very important. And we're gonna take a look at -- different phones here I've got a Linksys as 962 which is actually deployed. Along company. And I actually deployed this less than probably a week ago in this grand stream you might remember if you've seen older episodes -- on. And Paul doing his answer segment. So. Good budget -- 200 cost effective -- single line six line on yes PA 962. -- of the installation is finished and now we should have a wizard pops up asking us to go ahead and finalize the installation. It's gonna launch it's gonna ask this couple things that's gonna ask us for our registration information we have any. On the number extensions that we want to set up and something like this system attendant if you want an operator to. Direct people to different extensions to go through it was a report. Next we're gonna create new PBX is going to be the standard three digit dialing rule. The server is and that and oh 180. And yes and TP server ten theft and one. Pull and actually. What type correctly. Cameron is set up or admin password. -- But next we're gonna add an extension zero a 100 is going to be the system and operator -- just put. Operator email address. And -- it and and -- add two more extensions. And next and the operator extension is 100. And we do not have a VoIP Gateway war provider right now right now we're just gonna go ahead and set up an internal calling system. Every click next now it's going to finalize the installation and once this. This installer is done. Spacek and figuring all the software that's already installed mean going and we can -- and figuring our phones now. Three CX is nice because it has an on a conditioning system built in for supported phones or you can create your own templates for. Your grand stream BT 200. There already is an SP 962. Configuration. Inside the software where you can vanity URL and it automatically provision phone. But words going to go ahead and set them up manually a couple of things we're gonna need really need the IP address of the IP PBX really username BR ID. The password and -- A couple of those are kind of redundant but they call on different stuff and different phones so just be aware that right click next. And we are going to skip online registration and click finish. Now once this pops up here. It's gonna ask us and we're gonna get out of the remote desktop session. Okay -- come over here. You know point and -- VIP address of the PBX. And it and then act. Now this is the main. Management screen for the IP PBX here you can see we've got our extensions -- set up. That did that in the set up process so 11 right click on that here we see. And the default username and password is going to be 111 a one and one on one hand if he lies the free three CX what client. The we're gonna do is -- come over here to grand stream. Ever and enter our password. And -- come down here and go into the account tab. Now the account name is going to be. Want to once -- say the sip servers tend to attend up oh about one in the outcome proxies tend ten no doubt -- to -- Israelis want to want to authenticate ideas want to won the authenticate password is 11 in the name is user. -- use any DN SS RV records the user -- is the phone number sip registration is turned on and on register on reboot yes that is correct. Sit transports UDP. Nat traversal -- time you can use it's not really required. Early dial. We do not want to use early dot three CX does not support early dialing early dialing is basically one and then it will start -- string. We want is we want to hit the pound sign or send button on the phone to actually send the complete string of numbers that we want to the the IP PBX check in audio and via RTP are selected we don't have a dollar plan prefix on this phone. Old news Oracle had hit update. And reboot that phone. -- that phone is rebooting will come over here the Linksys little bit of a different interface little bit more options the six line phone residues were set -- extension one. Or an enable the line right shared user ideas not required. You come down here."

" And mailbox ID is. One -- two. The proxy is tend to attend. Oh one in ten -- and that -- donating. And the display name is user to. Off ID is one of two -- one of two. One of two -- Who should be able to submit these and the function reboot."

" We come over here to 36 management software. We see new contact is registered 11 that would be grand stream which is set up. Now as soon as the Linksys has done -- rebooting. Should come up and we can refresh the long. And one O two is now registered so let's try calling. The grand stream. This for you. You can has phone call. That's that. Now you can there's tons of VoIP providers or you can you know get a Linksys. 31 O two if you want to use your old pianist -- Phone lines to integrate with a three CX software. Now the great thing about it is this is completely free if you feel like you need to deploy this or want to play this at your office you can get a demo license from three CX reaction by the software to see if everything's gonna work inside. I've got an integrated with exchange 2007 you know -- messaging. Handles mine system operators as well as our voicemail very powerful he software specially with the added features that you and I -- For more information check out met last dot dot com or Hak5 dot org where I would have all show notes on three CX and the different models."

" Last week's trivia contest was a whole bunch worst -- and once you do that -- had asked you what is that -- and having common ways. And my last name is once they got. And I trivia winner was cipher eclipse. -- winning a copy of -- actually Schwartz tells documentary called hackers are people. This week if you Canon's answer and all his letters that are showing up -- campus and -- dot org slash yeah. Phil and the planes and an instant trivia questions you might get a chance in this -- get away widgets he's seen dice. TC guys are pretty -- I think and I hope you like them up and I have I have to thank our sponsor Netflix. Live Netflix you can rent over 90000 titles online including lots of great titles -- shipping both ways to your house. And now have over forty shipping centers almost all deliver this happen in just one -- Wednesday Netflix plans I have 199. Plus as a new viewer you can get and -- this two week free trial membership. At www. Netflix.com slash Hak5 and please don't forget that WWW. Except finally we're going to have our interview with run untenable."

" Our case it tonight we have the pleasure having Ron -- the CEO and CTO a tenable network security joining us tonight via Skype. Hey Ron how right now. Doin' very well thanks very much for having me on the show thanks for coming down it's great that we can do is virtually and whatnot. Have a lot of interesting questions Aureus and stuff submitted from our Twitter audience prior season when not so well get into it and just you know kind of get a feel for. What you do at tenable and -- how tenable kind of came about how."

" Absolutely so I actually happen to such a business cards on the CEO and the CTO. I'm not one of the original our co founders attainable but nobody wants it talks in time to time about to start a company. That's an uninteresting story in itself but my guess is mr. users want to talk about NASA's. Yes definitely tell me about NASA's that's what you most known for maybe could kind of -- that some of the history of NASA's how came about and that. It's it's changed lice and says a source and should act should think. So for users who aren't familiar with NASA's thinking go to NASA's done over and yes this US RO RG. And not download a -- tool that allows them to perform vulnerability scanning. On their network and NASA has been around for a long time -- of routers is no terrorists and there's the original author of NASA's very very involved and all parts of NASA's development -- the plug in development. And it has gone through a few changes in pretty specific licensing questions you wanted to talk routers what you know there's actually a lot of in the confusion between what that the homers in the professional. You know as that one points open source -- maybe you can give this little brief history. Of that 109 and what to. And what the differences are there."

" Absolutely so yes this is not ten years old. When it was first released it was released open source of the GE -- licenses. And those kind of things that people we're expecting. Passage to our crew in in popularity insert getting requests for a lot different features and functionality. And a you know one of the things that we did was when we got to appoint a few years ago we released a new version NASA's completes. I'm new product called necessary. And at that point we also had the license change very similar to justices and two parts on one hand the -- this scanner. It's a program you install on server. There's a client you can count on her laptop and the dose of the things that actually executes these the other part NASA's what you call planets. The plug -- is tiny programs that -- produces on almost a daily basis that your for the latest vulnerabilities. So perhaps in the new vulnerability comes out. Any -- to researchers -- tenable ready plugin. And in these you downloaded to NASA's soon if you keep in mind and justices to purchase these plug ins and then there's the actual Skinner itself. We have a couple different license changed to one from NASA's -- in NASA history. The necessary. Scanner. Was closed source leader to release the source code for that it's always free download anybody can get it they can download it can want to raise your own plug your more than happy to do that. But then the actual slogans that you can get from terminal we changed the licensed sash stack your home user. You can get all of our vulnerability charts scanned you're never -- you want with them but if you're corporation. You have to pay -- fee of 1200 dollars per year which is so people compare to depressive card here to persecuted will work these large organizations."

" Interesting but he so. Maybe could kind of share with us some Easter eggs or maybe some developer tips of some of the nitty gritty stuff -- something that might surprise him in its menus and -- NASA's for a while but. If -- is really under the hood there's these -- that that we've written that are really popular for example we just released a plug in within the past week. That give credentials to logon to windows computer will pull the entire block and every USB devices plugged in to -- from that machine. Some people you know mr. parts out they're based on patent you did you get that -- for free with masts and yeah you gotta watch her for the USB stuff there could be some people. Evil stuff being plugged into computers -- for -- so maybe Khatami a little bit about PBS how how does that relate NASA's. Sure so as much as we try to make Asus that's fast and comprehensive suspense as we can't. It still has one major flaw an idea for patents are more. When have to actually launched scheme and -- the stand and look at and no matter how. Minimal impact -- for -- NASA's if you can get penetration tester do some sort of you know vulnerability assessment if anything goes wrong during that time you're to blame when it went that you are not. So about five years ago we had the idea that if we could sniff traffic. We can easily imagine for a -- on the network the source that they were browsing on course they're serving out. And that -- look at traffic enough with the protocol analysis you can actually identify the vulnerabilities. So we -- a tool called the process vulnerabilities tunes -- it's from our commercials let's not start for free. But what you can do was put this on the perimeter of the core network. You can pretty much learn everything about what's going on that network I've gotta ask but the pricing and on that because I'm extremely interested network -- on. Sure the other question PDF since it's it's one price is 10000 dollars. Okay there's there's a out of the windows version you can slip it into any type of network and you can get really -- If you've gotta teach you feet and traffic you can actually lose the G speed up the feature track and do different types of analysis suggested generous best actor and it's starting to -- the video. And how to do that is they're like a home version of that or. We actually are considering licensing like that's gonna talk about some of the features to protect plan for NASA's -- they are considering. Do things like that right now Beatrice is mostly bad. Corporate -- my guess is -- under a network you're gonna know what's on their cubicle devices 2030 devices. This is really for large organizations -- they don't even think forgotten -- actual routers entire buildings that are plugged in us yeah monarchy its customers. I'm Laura Leo it's."

" I love the story of a systems administrator that sound like the NT four server that lake. Was actually buried in a wall you know them talking about -- like how are you agree -- we did the building and I guess nobody noticed and NT four server was up late years no problem. -- says something UH Friday holy -- or two you know an enforcer. On. -- except I really want to know so much more -- run out of time here but maybe could tell us what's comin' up. In the future versions and and and maybe you can come back later after would you like -- series on some of the NASA's -- on the animal products. And share some more advanced tips and tricks."

" Absolutely absolutely. -- abuse you should keep watch for new versions of NASA's are always working on that. We are recently just added the ability to -- sequels a -- your listeners or watchers are there are in the business of art and database servers we just -- this capabilities you can basically aren't my -- well. -- And -- you know those deployments account. And then the last thing is if people like this whole discussion forum types of interaction when they can actually seen in person talked to he's just directly. We just lost a new distortions or soon recovered and you'll NASA's mailing list okay now we kind of had a community driven area where your different topics you can go and share ideas scripts and suggestions grafted into one neat feature request --"

" Excellently acted out where to go and get a hold of that if you -- NASA's on workers directions and hot water onto the decision to run at the bottom of the page. Sounds great Ron thanks so much for coming on and I hope that maybe come back and show us an advanced tips and tricks that a little later on. Absolutely. Could not necessary but if you are right or we're gonna go ahead and wrap this show up so. Let's just that he --"

" guys -- just about -- of this week's episode of Hak5. Have a great show must confess. A lot of fun. And you know it. I think about it here at a good time you. -- both islanders and."

" You gonna take you guys jeans and Virginia. I don't think my grandma's patch so you can see book and find out that there's actually not a waterfall of Jamestown in Virginia but you know."

" And --"

" Didn't he doesn't. But you -- does. --"

" Parents yet Alex Jeff and Dan are going to be taking a look at the new street fighter movie legend of Chun Li all. Now I'm looking forward to that and as well they get to play halo wars which is the handle art yes. So check out revision3.com slash TRS. For our bodies. Right on they are on Tuesdays at 3 PM eastern it. So up here what's NT ERS can the next the -- you want. About. And Patrick. When you're things. He did an inland as well so there I mean it's not -- problem. Now yen. So anyway if you think the I PP EXE I don't know he's gonna -- system -- Look at what we can -- promptly gets Texas. It's this system. I don't anyways. Yeah we have Austin questions. From you guys that and look at your feedback questions it act on network. But before it gets that. Xinhua. What are the laws on on the air."

" Would that seat and."

" The copy says it's --"

" Copy -- thank you for sponsoring this episode of Hak5. Would GoDaddy. That's if you used -- hacked you. -- H -- to you can get five dollars off a dollar order or some restrictions plastic let's details and --"

" Movements in here. -- of the Internet. You know have fun with that because in -- the rest of us it's Dan. It's look at hackers there's actually one that just showed up somewhere and these. Planes and things that you have that would be just enter."

" Gunmen from I had charities and we met him actually gone for. -- time yes and just an absolute hate this tape fell off her neck."

" I brought the site. -- looked at it it'll be digital -- didn't -- From opposite Johnny long we gave in the pineapple for his silent auction which he would. Exceptionally well -- behind actuaries work."

" Hundred dollars to get to basically. " Yep well this is this is not a itsy bitsy teeny micro wireless -- is it now this is.

This episode is definitely going in the save folder. Though I am not a fan of windows, I will drag out my old xp box to play with the voip app. I wonder if it will work with a linksys pap2 or dlink voip router just for grins. Hmmmm...

New to this show. House guest just had me watch the last few eps. I am loving the way out geek factor, even though I'm not nearly as much a geek. Personalities are awesome. Got a new crush, in fact. (not gonna say which one of ya, with me it's up in the air, haha.)

But yeah, latest ep was great, you guys explain stuff so well, that a non-uber geek like me can grasp it, and then slowly get into the details as I watch more eps later.

further tinkering on the pbx

Hi,
I have had it in my head for some time to do some fun stuff with a soft pbx.
I know the power is there in the unix pbx's or atleast i think it is, i just dont have time to learn linux to the degree i want for this idea and learn the soft pbx software ontop of it. I'm a windows user and I doubt thats gonna change.

Okay so here's the idea, maybe you folks can run with it, iron it out....

Okay the ultimate goal is to have a speaker and mic in every room that ties to the computer and does IVR to the person in the room. The IVR pretty much functions like StarTreks computer and based off key phrases such as "homecomputer play white stripes" would then trigger off scripts that go out and play white stripes to the room your in.
This idea gets complicated really quickly but i think alot of the tech/software is out there to do it, just don't have the funds to really sit down and do it myself.
My thought is that the the voip extension is always in an open state to the pbx's ivr, essentially a never ending phone call.

And the dream goal is lcd screen and cam in each room as well but that becomes a very expensive project when I start even thinking about that nuance.

One conern i have is power consumption ... maybe make the phone/mic in the room set to vox detect rather than always on. I think ultimatly the project relies on the software specificly the IVR's ability to do speech to text and pass that as variables to scripts etc.

Microcontrollers

I can program microcontrollers using a device programmer from ebay for 20$ and The assembly programming language. There should be more episodes on microcontrollers and embedded systems projects. These are really fun to work with. Hak5 could put up links to the code and parts list. There are also some kits where you can build your own device programmer that program through the serial ports. Some episodes I think would be cool and easy to do are making a function generator on an output from the microcontroller and have it display the frequency being generated out an lcd or how to add peripherals like a magnetic card reader to the board they use or a program that simulates the rolling of dice on a seven segment display.

The wall-o-text hurts my mind, but it looks like it might be useful from skimming it. The documentation is in German?

I have not looked at that in so long. The docs are there and in English if you tool around. I found another several others since then.I am fixing to look at this one to see if my analog to digital adapters work with it.

Looks cool

I think I'm gonna take an old box and set this up. I could learn a thing or two at least. Heck, maybe I'll even use the thing ;P
