Easy Network and Bandwidth Monitoring

Friday, September 30th, 2011 – running time 04:31

Monitoring your PC's performance is one very important way to optimize any PC. Monitoring your network speeds and bandwidth is just as important!

Now I'm not talking about monitoring your PC's health or CPU (although both of those are handy indeed), but I'm talking monitoring your bandwidth and network usage. There is a handy tool called Networx that does just that on the go- it's portable!. This program does exactly what it should- it charts your bandwidth, logs it, and measures the speed of your internets. NetWorx can help you identify possible sources of network problems, ensure that you don't exceed the bandwidth limits specified by your ISP, or track down suspicious network activity which is characteristic of Trojan horses and hacker attacks.

You can monitor several connections or just one, and make it tell you when the network goes down or there is something fishy going on.

It features: clear graphs, the ability to export info, the ability to notify or disconnect a user after a certain amount of bandwidth is used, a speed meter to time downloads, it works with all sorts of connections, and it's completely free.

To use it, simply download the link from their website, either portable or the installer. Pop it on your computer, unzip the folder, and double click the program. Now you can monitor all of your traffic, download speeds, control bandwidth of users, and more. Lets take a look after the break, but first is a word from our sponsor.

Carbonite

Computer disasters eventually happen to everyone - (your computer crashes, gets infected with a virus, you drop it, theft, fire, etc.) but if you get Carbonite Online Backup before your disaster then NO NEED TO WORRY because your files will be backed up - automatically and safely offsite - and it's really easy to get them back. Plus, you get anytime, anywhere access to your backed up files from any computer - or on your smartphone or iPad with a free Carbonite app! With Carbonite, unlimited backup for your PC or Mac is just $59 a year. That's less than $5 a month. But when you use the offer code "Hak5" to start your Free 15-day Trial you'll get Two Months Free if you decide to buy. All the details are at Carbonite.com.

This is a very cool and useful program that Darren has used in the past and I'm interesting in playing with some more. What program do you use? Hit me up in the comments or email me -- tips@hak5.org.

And be sure to check out our sister show, Hak5 for more great stuff just like this.
