" today's episode Roberts fallow period of cool. Deep inside the local samples on the top five shot about -- you know cold if you told authorities he needs. The blue regulation for the wake of December 1 2000 guy. This date in -- Yeah. Today's episode is brought to you by this week. Squarespace. Godaddy.com. Welcome -- nation I'm Robert here and -- Patrick Norton HCA's beat your -- publicity because there invested a home theater -- no matter what your budget is Blu-ray on my satellite cable over the -- wrap up this makes me. We don't like this your we -- back where's my kid and she how was Korea."

" Customs took -- The flight to travel and the trip was awesome. And both -- question I was like Akron beacon to its -- Korea unfortunately we need by the California -- that lie that he's gonna put myself well okay we can. So these guys. Yes they did they wanted to take a look at the -- the inner workings about Samsung's visual display division. When we ever be able to trust your reviews of LCD flat panels again. I think so that. I think it's good to get better insight to how that company does what they do and it is that I enormous operation. A huge country to have facilities located all over the place and basically we were able to then go win and look at but not touch or take pictures pretty much anything you actually see it. You know we'll -- incomes that it wanted to open it and that's essentially exactly you know really take pictures now not a one and we had. Men in black essentially following mr. on the entire time going. No photos no nothing big picture the outside of the building go ahead. I'm hoping they'll provide us with some good video the working right now actually but the prize of some video clips and some pictures some of the sensitive areas including where the LCD panels born. And and a few other places to and the assembly line is really wanna show off as well we didn't rule it out like that you would glass breaking windshields or are going to glass how to debate portable. It wouldn't -- it look like eight as it starts just shy of seeds of of transparent it's near the the mother the mother glass as they call it. That -- actually -- immediately don't know it's flat flat -- Corning is a big big partner and all of this of course -- the last masters of the world. These large sheets are the thin film transistor that is integrated into the transparent -- to answer those get carved up. Into the individual panel size that go for they saw giant sheets come down the sides the need for TV's. Those things go into the basically the robotics room who were robots and of the machines take that and run it through the various process adding things like polarized -- electronic components. Machines that add all of that together they clear everything up it is this -- Very a lot of -- accident with. See now wondering what I can talk about. It well sir I don't want to disappeared but -- that's up to that we take for granted like Simpson made a big deal about their touch of color technology for the Basil system. That turned out to be a big deal and they have these machines that are about the size of a locomotive. That actually have actually have pictures of that I can show you that these machines actually bring together under the injection molding for the clear transparent edge. It looked over and then immediately the darker materials of the colored material things -- added. To that create that border that's just for the frame design. So the cool stuff to me was watching the assembly workers actually sit there and put that TV together take all the components from all the various places that the panel electronics all the bring it all into one package and then screw it all -- classic tax deadline for all of these different things sort of client in this one long world. Each individual puts one part on the thing you know I was kind of surprised this to be right back -- manufacturing job at a college where your basically your station. And you're responsible for. Checking it all up putting it altogether -- it together. And a couple machines actually test the panels right there before they move on from that point including. Full calibration of the display after tweaking the great scale -- of the pale before he goes on then boom ran into a boxing system. Packaged in and -- out the door is it was this your first helicopter ride system particularly. Now there's a helicopter for -- that not exciting as some places to were so. -- the first facility ten Jong we and it isn't it so far south soul that it would take a few hours to drive down there and then we're going to -- about it ourselves useful folks who want. And in particular how -- you -- just those two facilities for the first day they really big really lit up the red carpet first of evidence for an foreign to standard many cancer are not very nice here's your cheese sandwich. But that was the that was it gives you good perspective to terms how big these places are -- the place for the actual policy is manufactured it's called refer to lovingly as crystal now. It's in the middle of great country. The farmers around the area actually augment the word about the environment like anyone. Turns -- the Simpson buys most of the great. Production in the area so then they can actually turning their back from grape -- to whatever but just to show that you know and some red grape -- we are -- comfortable eating the food in that area because that's cleaner things -- also impressed -- with just the living conditions for some of the workers Samsung. These literally cities built for the workers to be near the facility -- sometimes drug -- don't know where. But it accurate families in terms of writing education hand and so the learning programs after the Japanese well. Very I think so to some degree but it. Also us stop me pretty much corporate socialist was that how many women are in the upper echelons. Management in the company not that was just refreshing to see and the attitudes of everyone saw. -- a happy twenty somethings working these places as well as families and with old people. Yes there were there were. To make sure the you know recycle honored honored -- but I doubt. Logan's run referenced by this just takes I would hopefully have some good video to show you guys and their pictures. After everything approved based progressive because we did see some stuff that's a couple years out that it in my is awesome -- bill would talk about it -- but I want ornaments from doing right by Pampers. -- but it wasn't vote. So -- it. You actually. Yours -- it's from Netflix. UPS three I got this in the middle right before I left for the trip to Korea. A few opening Tokyo I don't have to return message read via this is an exciting for me occupancy. You know can she is good cute she's really good stuff. But yes the PS3 disc or mine Netflix streaming services arrive. Actually dragged PS3 just cared enough that I don't vote for a -- enough tasteful. Now that's what I don't need to return and giving him so I'm I'm golden there. The red disk. Moderate -- for the PS3'S though apparently some people are you know wondering who will -- Well -- brick my PS3 performing this update well is this difficult to do. And I haven't updated my PS3 since I've received this so I figured why not try it right here right now let's or use."

" Every time to watch instantly do not return disk through Netflix. Five. Below are three. Too. Wide."

" We expect that. We're waiting. Our choices are being updated oh I'm afraid with an -- Yeah. It's been in my queue for quite awhile and -- investor. Drunken master teacher -- there you haven't seen that either Braveheart. Jackie -- and young man -- never saw. And we just hit with which -- Elected or. When you're out. Of it go with bullet resume plan. Clearly have looked at the four. Popular my TiVo streaming that's. Did the queen's 1968. Classic has a -- to hurt us that defines generations through the hills of San Francisco we'll be on the court case to be pupils leave much pleasure I -- should be in there early credits -- got very far into it so. The thing I'm curious to see is we're doing this over wireless connection a fairly fast wireless can actually at least seven megabit. What's down our our critics who have -- been up if you your heart like -- ethernet. Or anybody that's down forty days of it."

" Here is that."

" Here's what is it saying it would scale. Philosophy not a good idea for eighty feet."

" Turn them -- a little bit. -- and TV figure the -- beyond that close PS3 I guess now now. It's actually sending out native resolution right that they're feeding which is -- great -- that you're using a scale or or you're the TV to handle that sort of thing."

" No -- people nothing to fear from the PS3 -- it will be nice what the software's actually integrated into. The interface of the PS3 rather than requiring separate disc that be great that'll probably anixter wars culture technical issues. The driver and I don't know this is true or not I'd be curious to -- is that Microsoft had a deal that the only place. With Netflix the the only place you could happen Netflix streaming software on some game consul it was locked in at 360 for awhile also says that the appeals -- Then how to be coming to the PS3. That's that's part of the integrated features that. The guys that instantly it -- yeah."

" People we're gonna take a look at what you -- coming out this week and what shows on the top Robert here Tebow list that you leaders who waited. Won't want to go. They won't buy one of our sponsors that puts people. Good to replace the fine -- great collection of Blu-ray discs look no further our next sponsored split. " But probably live by -- DVR is medium apparent in every to watch TV that well. It's doubtful -- away it drops that we were early cancer and he shows right in the area DVR is critical for us to catch up. Back with mister -- out of the country recently. Well we wanted to do what the top five shows that Robert was wait Florida's TiVo would know what that tough in the well. Cities are no particular order to some of my absolute favorite shows that come and I check out on a regular basis and at the top athletes Frontline I don't believe you. PBS's investigative journalism show. It's just excellent reporting I mean it's I don't watch. I don't watch ratings driven broadcasters and your major networks I I don't I like to be happy beetle into four hour news cycle. Now what. Anyway -- does a lot of great programming it's also on PBS he -- that being here -- PBS. And they have a everything that covers -- there was a lot of science content and I love that and have their science now. Content that's especially I think it's great for kids and it's also just fascinating material just take a look at. Including some of the recently and -- highlight via the Mars they -- it's been five years now the Mars rovers on the planet they have a new animation where you basically. They is so you you basically feel like you're standing on Mars and reliving the -- the rovers have taken. Motor sports. I'm a big sports motor sports fan so I just blown -- NASCAR merging into one moment and say you know what there's a lot of good HD goodness in terms my motor sports. Recording it takes up quite vision -- you -- lightly. You know hopefully create TV airport peaking at the -- of negative. -- Costco and like yeah cool well my one mistake what I can -- content off my TiVo to my hard drive and I didn't take a couple of -- I wanted to watch with me on the road which now slap myself you know that anyway. But never for -- just before the my list would be how it's made it's a great channel are great show on Science Channel HD. There's a lot of content north and slanted view as well how it may just -- the -- of work. You and how cool -- made -- Holland and put together or how this particular product is made from pencils. High tech products and it's it's been nice background. For. And I this is just a personal favorite of mine I'm gonna throw another and I'm -- Smallville fan I I always I have been at least. They mafia vampires and they graduate I thought this small hill that still has taken a series appearance at the high school days and right now I think it's of the best. I don't know fantasy story filling yours you know showing the origins of the super care much for me. I think it's line and that's that. This what's on -- list and I have the honorable -- to. Anything that's on the National Geographic channel it's just great content differently -- that -- exactly the quality -- world's toughest six's ultimate ultimate factory -- he won an absolute favorite shows that's just. The -- of everything from the caterpillar factory where they make the big heavy equipment to. To the Rolls Royce plant to see how detailed it is in terms of car construction. Incredible Comedy Central has there HD programming now not everything -- but -- they're there and of course. History Channel which is they still solution with some of it but they have some new good that's full HD content now and at the island I think it world war two and HD. Holy cow that series just started up and it's it's it's impressive and have that the veterans were still around giving their perspective. With good voice acting as well and it's off. Of course that it mortified but -- simply -- for -- up my Smallville."

" Stepped away from Smallville let's talk about -- for December 1 2009. But that is crazy -- he's heard the class of relief DP. Seven on Blu-ray at the -- In the long running series of desert racing may -- we're talking Baja 1000. " Get a rest from the heartland Jeff writes it might that is an LCD TV has three season room. But he wants to install another -- in his garage he lives in Iowa where the winter temperatures get well below zero the prices usually thirty degrees or above but the three season room is not heated. -- take -- three season room TV down with the rods be okay what temperature ranges supported by most ED TVs thanks yet. This is a great question is more more people in its. It's not super comment but I've seen people put it like for football games out on the patio like it like it if he TV in the garage is going to be cold this where they can't definitely. 32 degrees is well below the operating temperature most OC DTDs or plus for that matter the app if it's cold and should not try to -- your HDTV. Proper storage though you can take it down to -- they're claiming most manufacturers say -- take down to four degrees. Barack negative quarters and I -- about net negative twenty degrees Celsius which is pretty darn cold so the key is really. It's if it's gonna be that cold you wanna turn on. I suggest warming it up to at least the minimum operating temperature and some manufacturers saying 32 degrees or freezing. Or a little bit warm -- that upwards of fifty degrees Fahrenheit so I guess really the key to -- before you turn on and condensation of the killer for these products so it. If you're dealing with the humid room -- water is starting to form on products are are your TV if there's frost on the poll don't turn it odd yet but the truth is especially you know your door to a lot of people us -- was released him in the trunk. Let it fit inside her PR sweltering temperature because if you turn it on -- hot suddenly from being cold condensation can really screw -- electronic -- totally and as far as he goes it's it's really not about. A 104 degrees -- what most manufacturers -- roughly for operating conditions. You're gonna be storing it up -- about a 140 degrees so just keep them out of the Sauna. It's essentially the good the good advice there and I -- expose any electronic product to direct sunlight for long periods of time either -- products don't put it in the wind ordinarily go or construction."

" You know we're gonna think one of our sponsors -- government godaddy.com. -- reliable secure web hosting without the long term contract godaddy hosting plans are bigger and better than ever with 99% up time free 24 sevenths support and no annual commitment. Keep your personal information away from spammers hackers had that crazy ex roommate. Private domain registration from godaddy.com protects your privacy by keeping your address phone number and -- work out of the public database. Now when they get a discount you decode AT and what the 10% off your entire order. -- to do line if you go to any site for details and be sure -- check out revision3.com let's go to April all the heat he's negotiating deals and codes. Please -- the Internet at godaddy.com and he's one of those eight yen goes what you do you'll be open us now."

" Go back into the bill -- Francis writes and I originally purchased a 54 it's Panasonic V -- plasma and all the -- it. But other books include the PS3 Panamax and 5400 and a Yamaha Wyeth -- 4000 which act as my surround sound and receiver. I was thinking about installing some type of bias like -- sent out a way to get your opinion of the pros in the eyes lighting system and how it can benefit the home theatre experience. He's biased lighting where you basically put it lamp behind your your screen at that exactly. Is that because it's really painful to go from -- of the screen -- really dark."

" Room it's sometimes that it can add a little bit -- especially the pictures -- control early bright and then that helps tame your basically the appearance of it to your eyes so that's not so. That that border of the of the frame to the back of the room is such a drop off in terms of luminous. It's a bias fighting actually is for all the the really eat each serves a purpose in in situations other that are really dark room. I I think one of the best things to do it by fighting and in a dimly lit environment expertise they have poor black levels meaning that. The deep color of black when you select the letter. It appears not quite black it's a greenish or bright it's not as dark as it could be it. Adding a bias what actually fools get your idea basically iris down a little bit. And then it -- lacquered and darker and might be vital it approves the perception of contrast on TV that has pork. -- contract -- my old television if we turn on the lights out to be like black on the screen neglected and that's black over -- the books are supposed exactly so for those those types of situations I find it quite useful. It if you're gonna install a -- like though some -- it should be a neutral grey color and the color temp you're trying to shoot for is about 6500 Calvin. That's a relatively it's not too blue it's not to read as far as the shade of -- yes and it's important you know what color he might have a very high usually think it like that the sunlight. Those the only ones usually around 4000 K that's pretty warm -- and broadcast television has produced and the dvd and Blu-ray movies we look at. Are all done to that 6500 Calvin standard under orders for like for white balance last of those I was buying a big stack of Apple's doing the -- everything's in you real like 3104000. Check it out I'm not sure they're using maybe a different standard for them but for TV is that for the specifically and I'm thinking of right there. And if you do do it you should become the form of a fluorescent tube -- behind your display and again out there are some good test patterns out there to determine how bright light you'll need for that environment. Joe cane in his HD basics disc has -- task that in the but the white square up on the screen. Your basically trying to match the light level coming off the screen of that white square to what the -- let's putting up from the size is finally here so -- here is basically -- coming up equally from all sides of the panel ideally I mean they would be -- if you could that would be one that would -- probably be best way to do it but it also depends too on you know in this case -- a corner but what this particular display. Maybe you've won a little bit brighter in the center. Or maybe more and it vertically at the lighting systems so that it puts the light makes it a more even pattern on the back -- the wall and -- kit is people sure people like about result bill if -- like you know. Being anywhere like would you like to include the HDMI cable -- at a category. The hearts on target show and a and a store environment anywhere mouse stuff Bolton law ready. You got to do it in a home theater room maybe. Maybe something like here and here in the US we have a magnolia hi Fleischer that's in our in our best buy stores and they also have. Rooms that they could show off -- system like that but it's not as common as that as like it's more important to have that like behind the screen who literally that is in front of the screen so if you have a room where you just need a little little light in there. But it and you wanna avoid getting reflections on the screen. -- what just might be awake at that light to the room without without an erupting the picture or altering the picture do you like -- like right in the back the two TV you're you put the shelf behind there -- like strapped it to the that depends on the setup situation the scenario that you're involved and if possibly you know double stick tape at the back of the screen as long as you're not. Covering an event -- up or anything like that on the TV itself but. It's it really comes -- in my mind in the way I've seen it and the way I've used it. It's it's improving that black level appearance on TV -- poor black levels that's villagers in that 6500 K experiment with the location yeah and if possible. You're not gonna find it in mobile situation I can usually find -- tube. Fluorescent lamp so go for a lower wattage you probably think you need. Our next question comes from attack."

" He's look at a while Blu-ray player with Netflix streaming functionality. He was looking at ideology 8390 of the Samsung BDP 3600. Both are listed at 209 dollars -- SRP. However the PS3 offers that puts a black my capability and keeping features with little more attractive -- the same price point. My main concern is whether the PS3 delivers the same quality of Blu-ray playback as the other Blu-ray players at the same price which what would you guys recommend -- Columbus Ohio. Okay with it to the the last question first PS3. You consider it one of the finest to cut the findings are reference -- it irrelevance."

" Yeah I mean for every Blu-ray player ever tested to date. Output 1080 1080 I pattern and community and 1080. Can't I get full resolution on this patterns he promotion or not. And that -- also you can have TV influence local about the TV being part of that equation the players general spit out that full 1080. That that things I would consider really her one. Are you dealing with the universal remote control environment down there are new products to the PS3 though lights at CN IR port. In order to gain control with state harmony style universal remote or other of targeting and has a history -- up PS3 uses basically uses Bluetooth which is not in most universal remote controls. So that would be my -- it's -- the other is up. File format compatibility if you really are going to be spending more time streaming or at least as much time streaming files to your to your device as you are going to be watching Blu-ray movies. LG 390 offer some pretty good file support including some open source formats that the PS3 in the Sampson -- not. And that's just one thing to keep in mind. That for me is one of the key features. I believe all of the products that we've listed here are all the Allen a complaining that if you have a home server. That supports the on a should be able stream your pictures and video. Supported video files as well as a music to that device and enjoy that your living room as well I guess they."

" All three of them are gonna look amazing for Blu-ray playback personally I I would lean towards the -- 395 buying a Blu-ray player today. The only 390 is probably the strongest me is that really -- the fact that Natalie has Netflix but it also sports and who do. And there are there eight they're streaming H yes if you have the network capacity to handle the download the streaming -- for that it is the best looking streaming HD you're going to be."

" That and also the need to stack another component on top of the Blu-ray player. It's difficult to do that the PS3 with a curved top and everything that one last thing to keep them on also. Power consumption the PS3'S gonna consume much more power than any of the other products we just talked about as well we're talking. Probably in order of ten times more power which it's still not a lot but. It compare say 25 watts versus a 125 watts and I guess that's I'd -- to. It's not quite into the."

" would sketch comedy much like our ability to quote statistics just got better. Richter is proud to announce that we got -- TV on board the land lines you need and have been making great sketch comedy for a long time that would hysterical bits with the headline. But what's hot in pop culture today check this out."

" Well yeah."

" Yeah. You write about them on the Internet all we're doing is protecting people from posts that no one wants to. Since mr. Madoff was a risk we've been bringing him around the country so people come by. It and again. Just remembered something terrible path but I can't tell you what your secrets. -- into.

Certain versions of it are allegedly known for causing stomach cancer., I would not eat that stuff, but I do love to eat pepper steak, moo goo gai pan, and etc.

Samsung makes good equipment. America could do better though.

The best kimchi in California, or most anywhere else, is a place in the Koreatown area of Los Angeles called "Madaongsae Korean BBQ". Corner of South Vermont and 9th Street. Best damned food you'll ever put in your mouth. And I don't care if kimchi causes cancer...its worth it :D

Hey guys,

I wish you guys had recommended some places to actually purchase some bias lights! I've looked around some stores like Fry's and Best Buy but they thought I was speaking a foreign language (not a good sign).

Any recommendations on where to purchase a bias light?

Do you seriously need to use a pocket knife to open your Netflix movies? Come on. :)

I want to see those pictures of the Samsung factory. The picture quality of the Samsung's blows me away. I have a Panasonic plasma and I like it, but I regret not getting the Sammy.

bias lighting

When I remodeled the room I am using as my home theater, I added three 4" can lights inset into the ceiling, evenly spaced behind the tv stand. I use halogen bulbs and they are dimmable...I like it...although some of my guests prefer it totally dark.
