So this could enjoy it look here's the deal right we put a link in the show notes to be I want BBC America -- eight. I've made my request for DirecTV now all of you watching -- the same request for DirecTV and optically worried about your individual cable subscriber but to joke people. " And everyone's homes awesome yes love that. Now on a not particularly -- related but still glorious knows who was it about blue radiation will hit the streets this week. " That would usually Ph.D. TV when -- do -- showed this twice annual conference where startups show off their new products. But the unfortunately named eagle laps which has -- thinking of experiments on Indian boys. Has a fairly slick transparent speaker technology basically died in 95% of light passes through. -- drivers on the edge of the panel on the idea that the drivers who left and right channels in the sound. Basically bounces torch you from the screen stereo for now they might be doing a center channel the future. Our man at -- Jim latter back said quote the sound is okay not tremendous unquote which is actually. -- sort of flat panel speaker technology is a huge step up he's usually boast the stuff we've heard where it's like a flat -- something sounds absolutely miserable. Now in the continuing effort to California's per capita electrical consumption flat. Apparently it's been flat for thirty years while the rest of the country's per capita consumption has grown by about 50%. I personally play and the younger people who believe in air conditioning and of course -- act act act act California and it has lately you know. The public energy commission is looking to establish TD efficiency standards starting in 31. And what the heck yeah now it's it. A case of plasma TVs the most threatened by this since they sucked -- the most -- LCD flat panel makers are on flap about this the CAA's not for it. Individual vendors you know there obviously depend on the number -- they maker probably going to be more or less panicked. The CEC claims typical platinum sucks down. Three times and use your old school standard Def C -- type television. And that we. Sort of as all of these big screen is going to everyone's -- it's it's sort of news messing up their plot for keeping your energy consumption flat in the state of California. I personally see this is just reinventing that we -- not sure why the California. Commission is getting involved in the -- systems like. Energy star that rates TDs for the entire country and it all manufacturers pay attention to those rules in the all strive to hit. The targets that are presented with and -- document presented by energy starts like. And over time especially the last three years I've seen all flat panel TVs decreased by at least 20%. And the latest models are like 30% below the targets that energy star requires so. I just feel like we're reinventing the wheel here in terms of just. Wire creating legislation for some yet in my in my mind aren't fixed and we should point out that both of us are very pro saving energy reduce electoral consumption maybe you should turn off your television when you're using it does. Because -- 58 inches would be exempt for now but could be subject further law suspect is currently under 45 day review. You know obviously the CU and submitted -- against its -- because I think Samsung the Biggio most of the models are probably already. Well within the 31 busiest and hate a lot of our stuff is ready for twenty that they beat -- and the interesting part about all expects the energy star or with the California -- gonna do. Not a factor in how bright the picture it's just how much electricity -- and so if you can dim picture any picture enough. It can get it can squeeze and antibodies that respect yet it's going to be a spirit that now of course people are just gonna trying to Nevada or Oregon divide."

" Off the list televisions. When offered in any case we've got there's stuff coming up on the show. We come back right right filled people felt right right caliber Judith top -- of -- but first. I respect what of our sponsors game why can't why is the largest online video game rental service that offers a choice of over 6000 Buick classic titles across all consoles and hand else. But plans starting at fifteen ID five a month game what members can read what the four games of the time keep -- for a longer bit life. No late fees -- due dates and shipping is always -- Once you're done playing games send it back in game what will save you the next available in your list. If you really liking bigger planes typically keep that on the game what website in the game that he awards at a discounted price. Game -- even -- the key individuals free of charge. That's an -- bad you can get a free two week trial like going to Debbie Debbie Debbie and I can't buy dot com slash H deviation. Some restricted supplies to the -- for details it goes for every hearing he should support us by supporting our sponsors like game fly."

" Back on top finalist is this week or clicks and it's in here doing this week. Yeah what -- special effects may have been built right there own right and cop to. Ask one question as -- and yes the -- you you're sprayed blood like every chance absolutely -- how you clean house I think it's long time especially because it's a mixture of corn syrup and powers stoic and pretty -- That's that is -- his -- on that would typically your house -- not -- the let it go let it -- man not a lot of an American werewolf in London why."

" It is one of the greatest -- horror films and my opinions on the land that's amazing director and the special factor. Fourth time excellent great forget what filmmakers because there's no CD is all just ingenuity. On how they did that transformations that pretty much invented an Oscar for make up for the guide me Rick Baker yeah yeah totally it is and people -- now but I I still think it would stand up script could do it yourself that -- Nintendo equipment added up all my clothes. The shining ha technical and Stanley -- excellent excellent film the perfect below the perfectly build. Suspense to the shocker moments movie in my opinion and there we can expect in mind and this and it's hard it. -- is great just kubrick's style of symmetry everything's that symmetrical. Lend itself to just be so unnerving in this world that just everything is becoming more -- more bad and then -- and that. The orphanage it is especially subtitled so you don't like to read mine now I can put it -- another great Barry -- cocky and ask. Building a suspense to shock it's only have a -- struggle with what apartments there. Because of the story that -- in the character development when truckers that it did much as you. Coming -- shot of that awesome that Gregory maybe Simon peg and I can't remember the other guy the guy I think. Actually -- it was great. Like I'm not a big fan of the you know hostile -- that is guts and gore. Just register -- although of people like cannot find. But I I really like when it's parity in this is a perfect example that probably my favorite -- would think I can and and it has a great throw back to the Romero. Zombie films if you could find -- Five that's the descent. Which is an Australian film all female captain and other exploit women for once what kind -- thing is there's hypocrisy -- the and it is very little. -- But it can create -- the monthly but it doesn't just rely on the monsters that there -- it also just makes you hardly hardly claustrophobic. As they go down into the caves and hang them caves if there peeking through my Brothers kind of claustrophobic so he can even watch in this in this it's extremely grant from the it basically yeah what's left of the torture programs. Since then we'd ever do five we need these -- them. The signal which is an excellent indie horror film from Georgia. It's actually three directors all wrote and directed their own part three part but the it's its own it has one fluid parking story line which they'll cut to sounds expensive. Only fifty grand you do and they shot on the think that we actually use for -- Which is extremely. Encouraging effort you know forgive myself film because they were reduced yourself to make it's that big government -- themselves and then. Went to the festival circuit and got picked up for theatrical release that is that we can excellent and an excellent excellent adapted it to grant that's the intricate degree and make them. I'll pick up. At the other end of the financial Specter's numbers for the call Tim Burton's. Fine with them in my opinion he's so good or wish you would do more of it defeated German express specific style. Is just perfect perfect at Johnny Depp and Johnny Depp which has been in every move he's made that statement -- yet they're perfect fit so wives. My break what -- like fix that with opera and number eight."

" Fixing things that are desperately desperately broken from out scary sketchy evil Johnny -- performance. -- spectacular it mostly because this and photography and the color choices yes Hughes Brothers made this."

" He -- Brothers which is not a society and that's president's. So this is a complete departure for them but a great and I thought and and another one nothing that's hardly hardly in your face terrifying but the whole movie has this just unnerving qualitative from start to finish. Especially with us in photography and how darkened rabbit is in the colors to even further that."

" They're looking for historical accuracy you're gonna hate this film but if you want like an unbelievable twist -- 1910 trajectory -- thing. It's -- and can do it that was awesome thank thank you if you have not seen it. You need you more Brian terrorists the film my group here hysterically or sketchy or scary. And the gives you tips on how to make your own movies at home including special effects you probably didn't realize you could you general out provisions -- dot com slash don't write it's good stuff. And -- and back to you rob in the studio. Thank you for the spooky."

" Suggestions guys now for the -- really for the week of September 20 feet out and wait we got home and Billy Jack. Dark crystal and fireproof. -- experience. Facing the giants. Henry portrait of a serial killer. However your mother season for. Elaborate. Eyes and delusions. It. Monsters versus aliens. The New York ripper thanks. For the plane. Streaks of blood. Superman Batman public -- 2003 is that Texas chainsaw massacre it BBC's Yellowstone battle for life. It season before. It is the universe the complete season three personal favorite. National Geographic ultimate high definition collect that. And the previously mentioned it was a about that again anniversary ultimate collector's edition. Coming up next I have a review the popcorn hour C 200 but first let's take a moment to thank one of our sponsors Squarespace. Squarespace is -- publishing system for anyone looking to build blogs portfolio or any kind of website. They are very uniquely flexible pool for just about anyone to build high and complex web site -- that same functionality that we'll find some of the highest trafficked pages on the way. To check it out now at Squarespace dot com and you decode HD nation when you sign up to get 10% off the lifetime of your work. Please support us by supporting our sponsor."

" Last week I was telling you we -- gonna start in more set top media players do reviews -- them. This week -- out less well he probably never heard of that but would you have heard of the popcorn hour C 200 networked media tank mr. Herron. Has his take on it. So set top box what in the most generic sense what is it."

" Well in this case is eight decoder for a variety of audio and video formats that are out there right now all the popular formats you run into on the web plus all -- it. Common formats you run into things like dvd and Blu-ray media audio formats this box can basically because that get in your home theater setup. So it's not gonna dues you know apple DRM encoded video from apple TV you plug into you know. You know something -- lock down the designee Steven pretty much anything it's open is. Fair game totally and most up to the final the way. Now I have this connected via HDMI right to a television and the setup was fairly simple in terms of just giving it sent out. There's an RF remote. One of my favorite things that's the default option with the the -- 200. Actually comes of the remote that you don't have the -- anything that's really nice that sells for 200 dollar or 300 dollars for that set up. -- Twelve more bucks -- want -- the -- support as well it includes a different remote as well as an emperor was this winter -- if you want that remote to also control your television you're probably gonna spend the extra tool box exactly -- a pretty reasonable -- or maybe something like the harmony remote universal style remote to control devices well. Now it comes with no internal storage so it basically that up to you terms how you -- outfit this device. Right now I have an SET -- because in front page literally just slides in their please don't take it out right now but it. -- It is we can pop it out as soon as we thought about it simple it literally just slides in close you don't even have to open it up. However if you do crack the lid on it you'll find another SAT port in there you can add a second drive. Now there wasn't exactly spot sport but there was room to kind of just put it in their hold -- and -- you know. In this case also has four double stick tape rules the world. Now the other nice thing is its support of optical media and in this case you have to use an external drive enclosure and that's what we have on top here in this case -- dvd drive and also sports supposedly Blu-ray drives but. Of the 3-D V of the three optical drive we have labor on the opposite number Blu-ray somebody to -- Somebody stole Patrick's drive if you got back yet but. -- that was fairly Wallace basically adding to drive and adds to the interface which you see right behind us. Now one of the cool things just getting it online once that's done you can immediately utilize some of those on one functions in this case. They have what they call there. Media portal service. And a fire that up real quick. It brings up that standard media feeds that -- from around the web including things like YouTube and Flickr and of course Revision 3 one quick thing. For the people out there who are doing HD video content for the web like we are. One thing I really appreciate the average pop gotta love that any of the episodes every and it's too there's a word right here's -- lark that's the format type for the video just scrolling up and down with the amount. I go speech Deaver in the small version whatever -- like -- hit the button and play. And -- deeply this small versions and -- smoke -- play. And it will go to online find that video and start playing it of course we get the black screen until then. It's like offering for just about everything you do it doesn't take too long and it's really seamless once it starts. -- that's the Internet side of -- and of course there's also customizable RSS -- and other types of media you can you can subscribe to manually. There's there's services you can sign -- but let me jump back to the main -- real quick here one -- gets right back that's really nice. Under setup the device built into once you have the hard drive. Hart adding hard drive for this device is really key because that enables the device than to go online and download a suite of utilities from -- our website and that -- this thing. Additional functionality I think a lot of people really him -- get a good taste for an -- we don't set up real quick. And with the call is that network media tank applications. Specifically things like a universal plug and play -- server. Another home server ftp servers on the support. And at best server up Tor client you can actually -- this could be days pulling down your streams automatically configure it through a browser. As well to use my client that I found some of those were really and especially the -- support that just gives you access from your C your windows PC going to drag and drop files right into the hard drive on here. Cool now they claim this -- a Gigabit ethernet connection on about my own testing I found that. I was never getting anything faster than 100 megabit speeds in terms of transfers. Still pretty good for -- what did you routers and no I haven't dealings 655 with -- Gigabit switches and Gigabit from the computer to the port of Ottawa just upset. But but I was -- once -- start transference -- multi gigabyte files like. Dvd files you believe that would be huge video off the tactic of the sport would be great I'm not sure that can be corrected or not or maybe it was something on mine I'll leave it -- that. Other cool things I have to say to -- BR -- remote Arctic. We talked a lot about what this thing it's great that let me just quickly go down some of the -- that ran into one. It's in the hardware Wednesday's data so much as the software that drives at all I would say I I immediately -- a firmware update. I immediately did -- firmware update when -- did this and I was going through some the codec support and things like -- support was missing. And the ability to stream certain files over my network from -- device that was supported. Now the claim that all these things have worked in previous devices that is all being worked on right now you're such a -- beta tester. And also. The network performance -- talked about but. Overall I have to say. Mike the performance of justifies it with large amounts files was relatively good. Now I defeated a folder say it's a single folder containing about 7700. Pictures while that bucket down. It took about about seven and a half seconds to go between different pages in terms of that but in its ability to deal with large amounts folders and files mixed together. It was snappy I was really surprised at how much I never felt like this thing I was waiting very --"

" Happen on such a good thing -- some of -- set top boxes we've seen over the last couple years they have sort of the firmware of doom or maybe whatever comes from the chip manufacturer. And you would sit there you would hit next and then eventually the menu would open so anything that snappy on a set top box is especially -- totally. It as with most players of course I have some photos and here you can always do stuff flex slide shows and what. He hit the button you have. Full control -- what you want to happen as far as a slide shows ago -- in terms of transitions -- along with the photos to -- he -- background music including Internet radio -- while you're doing -- slide -- as well if you have a completely -- folder with 7000 files inside of -- like you -- again I don't believe index that or -- a bad idea -- how it did it but it was when -- it -- shows you -- to go back to the previous -- through so it does index -- and -- the -- in for an hour faster access the next -- would -- who -- that. However it is expected this fish. Thumbs up thumbs down all of it for for 300 bucks its ability to go through the content -- already on and get it into my living room. It's working really well that would hand this my mom not yet its current edition documentation needs to get stepped up. But products beat functionalities there so any -- and Kodak except for -- and some other stuff and data dvd will test the Blu-ray Biden."

" Tweak. That's a whole lot of functionality. -- cool. Coming up next penetrating your useless pile of -- dvds for brand spanking fresh Blu-ray yet. But first let's take -- thank all of our sponsors godaddy.com. Get reliable secure web hosting without the long term contract godaddy hosting plans are bigger and better than ever with 99% up time three point four sevenths support and no annual commitment. Godaddy.com make it easy to customize your own virtual dedicated server. You were three popular plans -- like her own Linux or windows servers all the plan options DE. You can go eighty continue to get five dollars off any order of thirty dollars or more services to do applies to the site for details can be sure check out revision3.com slash godaddy. For all the -- nation doing any deals with codes. It was a favor get your piece the other day and godaddy.com. And use an eight the end code would you do you'll be healthy enough that."

" One more note about the popcorn hours dvd conversion abilities. They were rather mediocre they really fails my critical path however with your Hollywood is Hollywood film content it should be okay thank you decent picture although. And as little as you as you think it might improve over is easily fix and software's it -- issue. That there will be able to fix it software I believe the chip they're using for the decoding abilities has the ability built into it it's matter of exposing -- right. Another -- a little bit things I hope that -- crickets. In these tough economic times we elegy to save a buck -- you."

" You know what that means it is time for our our recession selection this week's election red civil. Used to be a she gave me back -- with Blu-ray but now it is a casualty of high Def format wars -- this convenient players and cheap HTV this. Still -- the marketplace that you ran here. That you like us you've probably invested in the giant pile of -- dvd discs. Incredibly relieved by a lot of the same title which means spending more money for something that you already half. Wouldn't it be nice if you could turn in your HDDVD. For the blue equivalent. Well if you -- in the United States you can. Thanks to read the -- At least if there Warner Bros. disk this is -- Warner Bros. program quality treating your Warner brother eighteen dvd titles through the mail. For their blue -- equivalent could be the -- injury convene this. All they want is the cover -- It's just cost you five bucks for Blu-ray plus a flat seven dollar shipping and handling fee or nine dollars for Alaska Hawaii and Puerto Rico. That's approximately twelve bucks which in some cases is an ideal but in many cases it's a pretty hefty savings on buying a Blu-ray over again. The only downside is that this program only applies to Warner Bros. -- It also limited when it right this proud solves that you think about fighting I think that's a master recently Blu-ray gets stopped. If you make that transition doubly raid one assailant repurchasing eight he would be sure to have yourself a favor take out red to blue dot com all of these bills are on the site. Finally got an email from JD's."

" Got some good information on wall about the EC TV's in two steel -- mounts right 'cause I've never actually had to deal with. He says as a navy installer I've had about flat panel TVs to steel stud wall construction. To mount up -- or tilt wall mount TV to a still stud wall you wanna choose about the expand to studs. And attacked the bracket to the wall using heavy duty toggle bolts. Anchor at least four -- Mobil's blue steel stud and if you can add a few extra in the drywall can help stop the bracket from flexing. He recommend toddler dot com as a source for those -- Now Melanie in full swing arm TV brackets the one that weighs way out from the wall. He says that's a little tougher due to the increase leverage its full extension. He says he's used to steal stuff adapter plate or bracket that's purposefully designed to attach to steel studs. Essentially it increased the amount of service area on the wall and allowed DDB toggle bolts through the bracket into the steel studs. The other alternative is opening up the wall in backing the mounting space between the two stuck with three quarter inch plywood very securely to the steel framing. That you finished drywall painting and apply any bracket you want to the wall. Because he would also recommend choosing an LCD TV over a -- if possible because the LCD is gonna be much lighter for any given size. JD he's -- installer and do you wanna thank you some awesome information. It's crazy and the -- ever seen steel studs the C channel though we're only goodness they're everywhere out here I appreciate."

" Think that would last a long time to get the key really is keep the wall from flexing it all and start loading the with a bracket and the panel itself. I will say though the latest finished flat panels the ones are about and -- haptic. They're all relatively about the same -- nowadays that you're right if you can get down to those usually more expensive flat flat panels. The wait is so much of concern between plasma and LC -- just let it get us a real heavy picture of oh my goodness we are excited by the way to tell you all about the new -- on Revision 3 called -- Both by Anthony carbonite like -- recovers the best independent and downloadable video games.

And at best server up Tor client you can actually -- this could be days pulling down your streams automatically configure it through a browser. As well to use my client that I found some of those were really and especially the -- support that just gives you access from your C your windows PC going to drag and drop files right into the hard drive on here. WB pretty much killed HDDVD by being the last big one to switch to Blu-ray so it is nice that they feel a bit guilty over it.

No offence to Robert but 99% of people suck at testing network transfer speeds. Even the FreeNAS performance tweak forums are full of people who think 20MB/s is good and can't work out how to get anything higher.

Samba is generally quite slow and Windows is generally quite bad at measuring speeds. Some people also claim that the Windows Explorer file copy is bad in Vista but I have never had any problems with it. I have also documented at length the fact that some applications have very strange effects on Windows. If you have VLC or iTunes (and probably others) open, even if they are not playing anything, your transfer speeds will drop dramatically. If this happens for these, it could well happen for background processes even if you have them closed. Linux doesn't seem to suffer from this problem even if VLC, mplayer or totem is open so it is likely that the best way of testing the speed for an average user is to get an FTP client and run it on a Mac.

For comparison, I get 110MB/s or more with FTP (vsftpd on a Debian x64 server, FileZilla on Vista x64 client) in both directions over roughly 20+ metres of CAT6 cable and a gigabit switch (Dell PowerConnect 2716). A good switch will let you know by way of LED whether it is in gigabit mode or not anyway, even if the device itself does not. Some NICs actually have to be put in gigabit mode while most will start in 100mbps and change to 1000mbps if they can. In mbps, RAM to RAM, I generally get around 945mbps out of 1000.

As I have already seen this, it is not new to me but...

I am disappointed that Robert was (Or at least appeared) not aware that the C200 allows for both a HDD and a ROM drive to be securely installed internally. This setup makes that device very close to the best overal media playback device out there. And I say this being a MASSIVE fan of the SageTV software/hardware solutions.

Gigabit Ethernet on Popcorn Hour

The slower file transfer speeds that were mentioned for the Popcorn Hour are most likely due to the write speed of the hard drive, and not the ethernet component. A few months ago, I read a great write up on this situation. The author tested file transfers between 2 computers and was only able to max out the lan connection by using SSDs. Sadly I cannot find a link to that article right now.

PopcornHour Community

Recent discoverer of HD Nation, came across episode 11 a couple of days ago and was happy to see episode 12 turn up shortly after. As an old time viewer of ScreenSavers its nice to see Patrick Norton again.

As a long time PopcornHour user (A-100) it was nice to see a video review of the new C-200. Wanted to mention a couple of things that make the PopcornHour experience a joy. The Networked Media Tank community forums are EXTREMELY active with too many people to name working to advance the experience. People working on custom skins, jukeboxes and their related jukebox skins all giving the user, provided they're willing to read up on the subject and implement some of the community built tools, the ability to achieve a look and function rivaling some of the most expensive commercial/pro media devices.

That being said, the C-200 is pretty new to the market, and as I understand it, there are some slight 'under the hood' differences from the earlier product, I suspect its only a matter of time before the C-200 sees community support equaling the earlier pch products.

A couple of links for those interested.
NMT Community Forums: The community forums I'd previously mentioned. Offers support and community utilities.
Omertron's Media Player Site: Primarily a YAMJ information site from one of the YAMJ devs. Recommend this site to see what some of the Jukebox's are capable of. They're getting more and more advanced graphically all the time. YAMJ is a Movie Jukebox that basically scans your media folder and scrapes title information from places like IMDb and theTVDB. Then builds an HTML based jukebox for navigating your content.

Jukebox examples to follow ...
