Ideal Surround Sound Placement
Patrick really pissed off some professional Rerecording Mixers, or at least one that worked on Rambo, Blade, Twilight and Van Wilder, with his 'noise' comment about surround sound channels last week... he calls 'mea culpa' and discusses ideal placement (instead of his favorite hack for small rooms) for rear surround speakers in 5.1 and surround and back speakers in 7.1 systems.

" It's I would say -- what he can. Move file but it goes to throw it back for the cool it looks good. It looks really good. Let's talk about you pissing off some professional recording mixers with your quote unquote noise comment regarding surround sound channels last week's."
" The thing is expensive and find out -- Susan you're more sort of adding extra noise that they are. -- mr. audio pique your Revision 3 manages to (%expletive) off apparently a large portion of Hollywood or at least a couple of our -- he has friends that witty sarcastic word choice. What he's -- Marshall who worked on -- editor his friend Marshall worked on Rambo blade twilight and while -- he also happens to be. Pretty talented guy because I've heard his work. They look at barely I had I really -- given a lot of other people by insulting the art. Of of mixing audio for surrounds let's talk about this book. Transcends on the floor that I was talking about last week it's hack if you specially if you have no Canon Z depth to your room there's not much space on your -- resides. Right I arms -- part is small rooms are extremely difficult ideally your your surround sound placement is just above your level. And behind you in a five point one system about a 10210. Degrees to the rear surrounds him when I say this there's you're. HT TV. You or. Center channel is at zero degrees depending on in the Adobe got some great articles are willing to basically tell you where to start right they they tell you to start with degrees based on the room. -- that your sweet spot that's the senator of of the sounds ager trying to create quite twenty to thirty degrees depending on how far you war from. The cctv and then your five point one surround. A 10010 degrees to the rear -- your left and right in behind you in a seven point one -- the left and right surrounds her 9200 degrees basically left and right from you. From that sweet spot the center of your your main seed in the room. Again just above your level and the left and right back speakers total 135250. Degrees behind you basically off access to the left and right. Regardless of -- putting the speakers -- there's some flexibility like you're talking about but there's two -- you're dealing with."
" One is the volume level how how loud the cells are and timing of this -- as well so. That's really want to get the place free want to have to go back and verify OK all all from all speakers and getting people people sound levels at this point. The sweet spot of listening position as well timing so that. You know if you're expecting sounds good had a two or three different speakers and wants to all reached that point at the same time especially for doing what larger rooms or just different distances and I mean even a couple of."
" You can make a difference yeah and when it basically when you're setting up your speakers it's like you know set them up and listen tweak a few inches out a few inches in. Listen to enlist in tweak listen to -- because like if you're trying to greedy cohesive. Sound stage that basically envelops your your center position your perfect spot that's under the couch. With a beautiful you know wall heated disputes -- to revoke that you know that's such a sound stage. Imagery just you know when it's America's you can feel like we're really good theater. -- of the speakers farther out makes a sound stage bigger move in the speaker's in kinda tighten it up for and that say it's also just more difficult. For speakers that are very close to listening position -- right now setting its speakers that are placed further away usually the speakers that are you know the front center in Latin are. Trying to balance those can be difficult but when you get it right -- I was watching some of the new pre season haven't NFL games and -- the surround work -- to make you feel like you're sitting in the stadium is just -- yeah. What are the lessons about some of them the more modern AV receivers that have come out of the base that microphone place the microphone in your center position and it helps you set up everything. He's that I could split -- people always a white noise than just the letter stones are usually built into like it and be receiver. But it could also do something similar with that a simple test this and a twenty dollar sound meter for RadioShack yet. Get the basics. Yeah and -- and look I did I love it well set up surround system when I was talking about is basically act if you're in and what -- will affectionately refer to as an unfortunate. Listening environment your home theater which definitely describes my current home state. And since you're doing the children. Until the children and -- out of the world's narrowest living room of the home so what we'll do a definitive episode on speaker placement in the future and -- candidate for -- cocktail and I have a candidate examples anybody with no room behind the candidate for -- couples -- up next we're at about our favorite cult movies. But first let's take a moment to thank one of our sponsors. Videogames are cheap but sometimes they suck it dropped fifty bucks for new title you can get stuck. Standard team -- largest online video game rental service they got over 6000. Buick classic titles across."
" All consoles and hand held. It's gambling fifty bucks and you've seen how about 595 a month become -- game play number eight you could -- one to four games of the time keep performs like he decided feel like that before it dropped the big bucks no late -- don't engage shipping is always free. So when you don't play -- send it back in portals into the next available game when your list. If you like the game your plane if you really like it -- keep sit on the game why website in the game as you worked at a discounted price discounts are good. Game -- David Cason made jewels free of charge and you've grown tired of a title you already own treatment and -- games could be used as credit worth membership fees what could topple that. How about a two week free trial if Tunisian fans get a two week free trial this kind of lucky flight dot com slash speech he gave -- The restrictions apply to the site for details employees support each nation by trying out our sponsors like to fly."
" What they did say about HD and home theater books is that without a doubt we are -- fanatics we like movies and we definitely love the cult movies. So right now we're gonna bust out our top. By cult movies available at -- or at least the top five we settled on after a long drawn out fight between teenaged TV should members. What do -- look this is at least one each of our favorite on your list of five cult movies. This one though I think we all that -- I happen."
" Exciting. -- get to actually see the whole movie I -- it -- to -- actually on the anyway the warriors have a copy I didn't want to tonight okay cool about it okay. I should it it it's like it's in 1939 film based on a 1965 novel by -- and soul you're takes place in the gang infested streets of New York City. Now after being framed for the murder of a gang leader the warriors must fight through an army of rival -- to reach their seek sanctuary. Of their Coney Island home turf. While the -- appear -- in the movie does reflect a period of time in New York City when many thought this that it would be lost to street crime corruption and apathy. It's fun it's a cult classic means the that you need to rent it borrow it have a festival of friends. You can build amazing drinking games around that. It I don't even drink and make a big release for we can -- shots of espresso. -- my goodness I can do that that number or a clockwork orange another novel the film adaptation clockwork orange has been described quite. Accurately as one of Stanley -- most disturbing movies. Starring well Malcolm McDowell when he was like twelve. In the role that basically prevented him from working in movies for the next twenty years or so. He's played Alex bit larger clockwork orange chronicles his transition from a actually psychopathic delinquent. Who just happens to love Beethoven -- model citizen at least temporarily put delusions of the break out of the moral fabric of society. Menial politicians who care for the more than her own reputation and well the best ever version of singin' in the rain you're gonna see on television or. This problem here fairy tale story gone awry if -- don't -- Goldman's novel of the same name and it's perfect for young and all the life. Now it stars -- always. As the swashbuckling hero whom -- some of his life from the clutches of the evil prince became the existence of assortment and eagle one point and there without the giant. Wrestler passage. And -- it. If you want action romance comedy sharp wit and classic one liners that -- sword fight yeah that's the princess bride is it. Absolutely and it went -- giant. And it's been -- you -- number two blade runner. What can you be happy Vanderbilt Kate -- writing but this is a great adaptation of a side by story Ridley Scott brings an amazing vision of it is still be a future where man has perfected the creation of synthetic humans. Only to achieve that with limited life. Visual. Beast. And there's like seven different version of the director's cut the other directors cut studio to take the director's cut the original cut the -- on the theater it's. Which one should I watched I don't know what's the original in the theater why I believe I was happy and he virginal move on of the director's cut effect if any case they're all. Visually stunning -- energy and intensity feel all of its own be acting as spectacular. This sets are. Just under Rucker power. In Edward James almost two. But gas awesome great cast at number one army of darkness."
" Agreeing."
" And we'll talk in the third installment of the evil dead series army of darkness is singlehandedly responsible for Bruce Campbell's rise that colts superstar status. Huh mistake -- can't beat army of darkness -- classic zombie and a sorcery troops on their head is Bruce Campbell's -- twentieth century know how martial arts and attitude. " If you haven't seen it you'll either love it or you'll basically email us really angry about wasting two -- of your time. Of course there -- won't actually quite a few cult films. " So last week headed out the Southern California ports to be exact. To check out Stewart -- screen. Now you've never heard of Stewart on screen they are the makers of projection screens for theater commercial and don't use so if you've seen the movie you've probably seen a movie on a Stewart feels great when I succeed seed movie theater. It it could be very likely now if you've ever been to one of the -- and parks that's owned by operated by Disney. Every screen that they have is actually built and designed by Stewart and about for all of the movies that are scored in terms the audio were talking earlier about scoring -- About 90% of -- are scored using a Stewart -- so I mean how does the Cadillac of films greens are to be big rules of final and -- what did you see it from scratch you actually start out with bags of final powder the -- itself and these get cooked together in these pots that heat up. Along with acetone and fire retardant. Alex and -- big cumulative respirator no there there are some rooms to that we're very very few. It's a very happy happy people working there so what it. When it talks about what they mix them until together in the -- in these huge basically. Cooking pots the industrial size once it's been piped into a ring that we weren't allowed to actually take any. Pictures of whatsoever it's the one of the few super secret rooms they had essentially to spray system these are actually sprayed. On to a mold and removed and using that process are able to create. The screen size up to forty. 40050. By policy forty by ninety. Without it seems whatsoever. Perfect and that's it's pretty impressive. Now in addition to the chemical rooms some of the screens are actually perforated to make them sound transparent. In order do that they got a punch holes through but. When they first pull the final out of the molds its its too soft rubber meet its bubble economy. So this start trying to punch holes through that it -- yeah it just -- so they end up having is I. It's actually using waste heat from the other processes they have going on. And it's actually right above the spray room where actual screens are -- ladies opera. For five days and after the done curing. Then they're taken over for further processing namely the the perforation system but that's just for the perforated screens and that's. -- like -- just for audio transparency so you're gonna place meters behind the screen. You want a perforated screen for that it's pretty common -- fetuses are all off with commercial theaters definitely. And ignorance for more more home theaters just your -- speakers behind the screen -- that you like small screens for home theaters -- and size actually rear projection TV screens as well. What are the keys of them being able to build their own screens and and the process is that going to it is the top surfaces for coatings for front projection systems or the more transparent screens for rear projection. They can actually buys the screen one way or another to make up for deficiencies in the projection system our savior -- a little too blue. They can then tweak this ring material to minimize that are fat and things like that. Now there are a lot of chemicals and -- and things being cooked up and that created a lot of you know waste. I guess affluent or whatever when it caught coming up at top actually had a pretty great environmental control system that monitors that that excess. Gas is being released and it would cook and often the 1700 degrees before just make sure everything's clean before it's the environment. Now we're get back to the perforation systems. Now when they do that actually have a 350000. Dollar machine. That they used to punch people that ballistic picture that machine with a nice pick but no actually it reminded it's very mechanical very hands on operator where that is punch the holes through the machine but. That is for what they call their micro per system -- now there's two different kinds have a studio -- Cinema perfect excuse me in a micro per branch micro -- polls are very very tiny that's. Ideally suited for proceeding pretty close to the screen where you could notice that whole structure. And the more traditional cinema per -- which are done on up. On -- two machine basically run the -- to the material there once it is fairly automated that's more for commercial venues releasing much further back against us for the simple transparency. Now to now the screens that. -- very big on just quality and they stick with and a nice to -- about three and happens to be the stuff was everywhere. And in order to make it -- for just corrosion protection and the other benefit to get out of Canada richer basically it's an accident that it's. And the rising as oxidation that's been made special -- which really -- oxidation on the surface of the aluminum and it trailer with advertising so how -- they get a fifty foot African. Beamer to -- one and it does one of the benefits of being located in Southern California right near the airport. And -- acts is that there are a lot of commercial. Flight system companies that are -- all Boeing Raytheon and others as well as the shipping industry in between those two. They have facilities that can handle fifty foot to dramatize things like that as well. Now shipped. Didn't they have a whole sector and actually it was nothing but custom box construction. And personally as a great -- as well that show off some -- They're they're curved screen systems as well. Now in addition to just scream materials they also work on other projection type systems. Why is -- I have a picture of the globe that's basically being eliminated from the inside out. Basically about a two foot diameter globe with a with a rotating picture. Satellite imagery of the earth being rotator round they're actually making about a thousand of these four I think Japanese school students say. But that also gets back to you. Some of the other work they do for the flight industry as well there actually Stewart's big on what they call leveled he flight simulators for companies like Boeing so. Basically what is the level these plates and it means that if you trained to fly your 757. With the level -- them you could never actually set foot in a real plane and you go -- that simulator right into real plane flying real people and it's scary that sound that just gives you some in and inclination of how good some of their they're the real that I don't trust the dictator the standards is that the whole idea Blake you know. Doing hopefully cement and giving in the might. Drive -- their act air traffic control simulators to actually have a rose nearly 360 degrees with rear projection systems behind them to create one seamless three. Almost 360 review where he walked into it and it looks like you're in one of those towers here air traffic control system. That to me was just fascinating -- can be now. The -- facility has been their since 1947 that's where it was released and back in the days to be huge agriculture right so. This one building they've got this one building as this from the forties that was originally won the one of the buildings used when the place is to be fields and trees. So -- it but you know it's there. In the midst of everything else they're doing it was it was pretty awesome and I have to say so that takeaways I I saw while just viewing this wonderful so it was. Hands on work there was so much hand labor involved in crafting these greens. I saw a rear projection screen frame being instructed it was at least 54 feet by eleven feet aluminum tubing the guys out there you know just getting -- all welded up. And in their custom room where there is doing specialty products mainly to curved screen systems and the automated -- where you can have -- get a sixteen by nine or 2351 screen. You can have automated that's coming to make it a four by three or sixteen by nine -- him yes he's now one off. Now I -- dedicated room with the micro per screen. So I can actually have my senator channeled directly behind my screen with the seriously break projector no windows. And I'll be happy so could trip it guilt trip it was also. Entered is. You really get a sense of this is really where home theaters that. I mean I I love flat panels -- easy and convenient setup but when it comes to really doing something that -- that feeling of being in the theater nothing beats a production system. I was coming up next recession -- it but first let's take a moment to thank one of the sponsors that makes each nation possible."

" In these tough economic times we all wanna save a buck or -- you know what that means it's time for. Our recession selection this week's election could. It expensive HDTV wall -- yes that's right. Wall mounts racy TV needs to be seen at a comfortable viewing -- on the floor assure you get an entertainment center shell for stack of bricks don't look your TV at eye level. But really ball marks are the best way to hang your TV you see valuable floor space -- shelves are center channel speaker underneath the TV. You can go to electronics store paid way -- much -- can shop at places like model priced dot com or Costco and find yourself some fabulous savings. For example model price has models that will accommodate 37 to sixty street TV is of no more than a 165 pounds which is a big TV. For as little as 26 bucks so. Four point six bucks some tools and the cost of a pack of -- for your neighbor to help you can't. The PDF to hang it on the map you can be enjoyed your HDTV style at the correct high level for your viewing. Of course bottom prices and the only game in town you should definitely do some shopping around but look if you're looking for basically to hang your HDTV on the wall. You don't have to shell 150 or 300 bucks that some retail stores try to charge you for the same darn thing. Now that's that some of something more expensive wal mart's mobile mart Wal-Mart. -- the -- wall mounts are actually worth. The money the -- pretty amazing ones that are super thin to want to have a bigger speculating arm and actually hold the television in the right position incentives to sort of you know by enabling it out there that's true to another finger really."
" Before you take this leaping get a long enough system you can't just screwed into the wall. Yeah I think about how I -- plug everything in as well so if you're gonna have wiring or ideally an electrical outlet plates right behind the screen. You gonna have to get that done had a time in it in most states I've lived and you can't just run an extension court for the wall. A given notice -- host yeah who's gonna know what our house burns down. Those that think you really have to consider -- time -- can cost a little bit of money especially if you're not handy with the tools or you have an electrical -- Practice on an electricity but he had. No matter how much you pay for the now make sure you -- TF and and use the proper size screws preferably screwed into the studs. Because there is nothing more pathetic and I know at least what have you out there is going to hang your head in shame when I say this. That amount -- year HDTV with the Blake the little drywall screw the little black ones. I -- they don't have have you done it. Here's the -- the drywall screws and then in the little -- have the whole thing just fall off the wall it's been done. But about the ones -- all like that the crazy viewing angles if you need to get behind the screen for any reason like hooking up additional cables -- Sasser is that can come in handy or if you would like if my friend's house. That we did in articulating arm system -- that you could bring it out just almost ninety degrees left or right it's it the apprehended at the kitchen the kitchen in particular he's got his living room and kitchen one large room and he's able to turn like I don't we've rarely ever does it. It is handy for just getting behind Mikey got his little flip video camera for its AppleTV our quick put -- right into the -- itself and demonstrate that. There can't be -- some consideration their -- what won't get up at the bare minimum you want to be able tilt down especially if you're gonna and a mounting higher than advise. You need to be able to tilt -- so that the the panel is perpendicular. To your eyeballs. That's most important thing. For color indeed still as well as just I don't know aesthetics that at that particular here rivals. I think we're -- it on perpendicular to your eyeballs that is it for this show -- hope you've enjoyed it -- I get the best question ever okay. What to babies port in the army having comments. Yes there all of this week's episode of raw hole the funny show on the Internet bringing you the best standup comedy from around the world it is ethically funny you can find it Monday's. I'm curious to know if you are first generation Blu-ray player owner and if you -- you have one of the very first devices that came out if you still own it it's round. Does that still work we would."
" Love to know because we've been talking to some of our friends and people writing in saying that. Some of those first generation players the very first generation. If they're not being updated anymore they tend not to work with a lot of movies that are out there nowadays and if that's the case we have some ideas for ways -- put those older players to -- but.
Well in in in your home theater -- it'll stay with -- no need to see and number three -- princess bride. Decker -- tracked down he's at well deckers Harrison Ford he's gotta attract a renegade who did replicates it come to the earth seeking way to extend the lives do matter what the cost it is an epic. Visual. Beast. And there's like seven different version of the director's cut the other directors cut studio to take the director's cut the original cut the -- on the theater it's. Clicking confusing how.
To stop -- for rising up and Cochran human kingdoms now with lines like give me some sugar baby and shop smart shop S mart. -- appeared to need a picture that'll have you had stitches and on the -- receive public in this."
" If you haven't seen it you'll either love it or you'll basically email us really angry about wasting two -- of your time. Of course there -- won't actually quite a few cult films. That are available obliterate that we wish were -- was for another day right now though we're gonna give me the Blu-ray releases for September 1 2009.

" Love to know because we've been talking to some of our friends and people writing in saying that. Some of those first generation players the very first generation.
