Big Books About Comics
Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 running time 19:54
All comic book readers have a big stack of those big comic book reference books. You either hunt them down, or get them as gifts, but sometimes the best books aren't actually comics, but are just books about comics
Books about comics are in no short supply. Stacked in thick, heavy piles in your local bookstores, these impressive volumes are very often given to comic readers at the holidays. "We know you like Spider-Man, so we got you this..." But rather than induce eye-rolling, a lot of these kinds of books can be a whole lot of information, and a whole lot of fun.
This week, Ron, Josh, and Conor take a look at some of their favorite giant books about comic books, such as the DC Vault, Marvel Chronicle, Watching the Watchmen, an encyclopedia of comics from Dark Horse, and even one that has Stan Lee talk to you, among other.
Stock your shelves, or perhaps your bathroom, while learning all about the history behind the stories with some of these great big books about comics.

Episode 120 - Big Books About Comics [Discussion]
All comic book readers have a big stack of those big comic book reference books. You either hunt them down, or get them as gifts, but sometimes the best books aren't actually comics, but are just books about comics

I love these books. I got the Alex Ross Mythology book for Xmas last year and have just kept re-reading it ever since. The first book about comics that I ever read/bought was 'All in colour for a Dime'. This wasn't so much a big book, more of a small paperback but it was great. I learned so much about the golden age creators from it. The best thing about it was that it was a find in a book outlet store about about thirty five years ago. I got it for the princely sum of 50 pence. Still have it. A great book.

This isn't so much a book about "comics" per se, but I just read "Kirby: King of Comics" by Marv Evanier. What a great book that was! I actually got this over-sized hardcover for a dollar when i joined the science fiction book club, and it was the best dollar I have ever spent in my life. It functions as both a biography of Kirby and his impact on comics as well as a Kirby art book, as the book is bursting with art samples. It was a real treat to see a lot of Kirby's un-inked pencils and proposal drawings. It is truly amazing just how prolific he was, as well, During a span of time in marvels first heyday in the 600s, Kirby was doing the equivalent of four complete comic books a month, including covers. It was a great read, highly recommended to any fans of The king, or just people interested in the history of comics.

That was such a great book. We sell out of it in my store all the time....well maybe cause I keep on buying it! If anyone doesnt think Kirby's art looks that good. Look at his plain pencils/sketches. Good lord those are incredible stuff.
Josh werent you guys going to do a Kirby show this year? I remember you stating it sometime last year.

I might have to pick up Batman Animated. That is probably one of the few cartoons from my youth that I can still watch and enjoy.
