Another Five
Saturday, January 12th, 2008 running time 29:16
One year ago, iFanboy brought you their Top Five must own trade paperbacks. This week, they bring you six through ten, and because there is never any agreement among these guys, six through ten ends up being like twelve books.
Anyone can do a Top Five list (um... even iFanboy), the trick is figuring out what comes next. WHAT COMES NEXT?? With so many hundreds of choices, what is truly a Must Own? Is it a rolicking super hero yarn? I sob-inducing story about a best friend with AIDS? Is it a new take on hard boiled noir? Maybe a fantasy tale starring characters who look kind of like Smurfs?
If you're ever stuck on a desert island, make sure you have these:
Pedro & Me by Judd Winick
Absolute Kingdom Come by Mark Waid & Alex Ross
Captain America Omnibus, Vol. 1by Ed Brubaker & Steve Epting & & Michael Perkins & Michael Lark
X-Men: From the Ashes by Chris Claremont & Paul Smith & John Romita Jr.
Batman: Year One by Frank Miller & David Mazzucchelli
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. 1 by Alan Moore & Kevin O'Neill
Project X: Challengers - Nissin Cup Noodle by Tadashi Katoh
The Green Lantern Green Arrow Collection by Dennis O'Neill & Neal Adams
Alias by Brian Michael Bendis & Michael Gaydos
Bone by Jeff Smith
Sin City: The Hard Goodbye by Frank Miller
Absolute DC: The New Frontier by Darwyn Cook

They've had two part words if that counts for anything. This is just the next step in the iFanboy evolution.

A two word title? Am I the only one a bit miffed (I think that's the word) by this?
Or is this year the year of the two word title?

One of the more amusing ad spots. Ahhh Saturday Night Live, I miss enjoying watching you.

In this discussion of multiple words and ad spots let me be the first to say, "Good show, guys."
Ron mentioned he had one of the Green Lantern/Green Arrow road trip issues. Is he the only collector among you you three? I know Conor has said of a given comic, "As soon as I get a nice trade I can get rid of the issues." And I can't see Josh bagging and boarding, let alone going through back issue bins. So who are the collectors as opposed to the amassers?

I have collected in the past. I would certainly treat, with great care and respect, certain classic issues out there. Currently though, I don't have a lot of interest, time or capital for such things. Anything current, I have no connection to the original issues.
Now, Showcase #22, the first appearance of Hal Jordan? I'd treat that like a newborn babe.

Good picks, everyone. Conor was right in saying a lot of people know about but haven't read the GL/GA books, at least in the case of me. I plan on ordering this ASAP though. This was the final straw in my not owning it.

Just keep in mind that the dialogue is VERY of its time, you dig? If you're the kind of cat who can read an old comic in the context of its original time period then great, but if that's the kind of thing that would bother you then you might be in for a rocky road.
And that's no jive.

Or is this year the year of the two word title?
