Best First Issues
Saturday, June 21st, 2008 running time 27:44
There's never another like your first, is there? Josh, Ron, and Conor talk about their favorite first issues, and what it is that makes a great start to a comic book series.
The first issue is the holy grail of comic books. It's your first chance to find something new and exciting. The first issue represents hope of what might be. There is an art to the first issue. It must grab you and pull you in, and give you just enough that you feel satisfied but want more. Some writers are masters of the first issue. Some first issues stick with you for years after, all others struggling to measure up. This week, iFanboy talks about what it is that's so great about first issues, their favorites, and who does the best first issues.
You never forget your first.

" I get excited by the number one issue of let's say you're gonna -- what you see a -- you know I saw on a is that an accurate yeah. Endings like -- three years and then what I like is that like he had like -- of the new qualities as a he's facing different and is going to new constantly new -- and it could be at a coffee shop reflect actual autopsy let's let's go to. " I think we're excited to benefit for today's Internet community grandmother flying well. It's a -- happy thing -- personality liar is excellent 500 is like you've been married that that bitch for."
" And -- pocket of my life."
" People go back to get a Whole Foods Market John -- she doesn't want to blow up some food you wouldn't. I'm in my life I had a trader at Richard as well like."
" But did have talker this. Why can't always. It's that they don't get -- number one issue does a lot of a lot of track this it's it's it's it's you don't you don't know what you don't know when he can contain and where to go. And sometimes it -- it in the -- a good number one issue leave you wanting more and that's actually yeah every one of these and Xena that I that I. Ten that I remember and it's funny because like we think about what are our favorite number ones aren't so bad that I write a photograph number one it was a book that I picked as the number one pick of the week. That the whole series didn't actually pan out to -- my favorable times but this is an image comics by. Jim Kelly did art and cheering guilin and it and it was steeped in Brit pop more and that really attracted me. And the -- for that book leading up to the first -- you I was salivating for and so when I finally in my hands on it it was such. Payoffs and it was such -- like it's you know."
" Let's talk about my W I think it's that should. Talk about viral derail this show the reason that the recent issues we got a lot of not a big bucks and it. But also Superman astonishing X number one and it's not going to -- number one that brought it identity crisis number one. Expected a blog mr. Golub or green Arab like medical big book yesterday -- an issue but let's welcome. All the ones before we had then look for the -- it will completely you know of our favorite ever want."
" Issues. It's funny because I started going through books issues and things that I would pay it's like my favorite and one I've -- just like. What to stop -- having a and they are all."
" Or this there there either you did say can I know pilots who do we it's also an issue Alex well. Charitable acts of vertigo -- all marvel knights 982000. Or vertigo 2002002. And and marvel knights of the imprint that a joke -- engine on Johnny oversaw. And right now it's. Which are there was and one vertigo as you know is the kind of the darker alternative side of the easy until sixty adult fiction in -- at and ethnic. That your taste. That's -- yes and and it's funny because all comics that come after that. The one that I really like her in that pain hasn't done is keeping that Madison's -- I read do we wish you were here comics so mainstream so when you think of your favorite and one issue was personally very first it's the bottom line. Was west coast of dangers number one for some hot comment. -- off. That was like classic images issue which is always 1984. Like yeah that was a miniseries this was number one in the fortunately in the eighties and why do you remember it. And in the -- loved the cop I've -- came up. I would have been sent -- Becky when did that way you can see right scratched off -- actually paid their premium price but there. The times and accents that's. That's awesome. I remember buying. When I was a little kid -- the same way now but you know there's like the mainstream thing and then this thing it's a little off the side that I was always attracted missile off the sides I was like in my ventures. Going to buy that west coast of -- offense though it from that I really became a big fan of Hawkeye -- always have been -- marvel characters and this is. This is the prototypical. We're building the team issue you know we've talked about that and you manners that a lot every every. I know few issues of the day first -- and so I didn't know who any characters where like it it's also the team. People will that was -- Osama -- doubt -- out the front is is it's got a bunch of heads and then it got in the in the -- section the question always had that so yeah yes no no I didn't know look at you know who's going to do it -- the other part is like as. I bred more comics over the course of years really I could feel and who these people work in Cambridge mass -- we'll she's married to. All right Clint Barmes yet hawk eye on and I actually to regret this in. Me as I cannot guess -- it I think mockingbird that -- is that tiger. Yes iron man up and wonderment. -- Number one they did offer. They offered and got refused by one really cares on this -- Simpson. This flowing locks no now and I want to -- you guessed -- No Hercules -- pop ups are there other flip ultra and who's that that's the I know of yeah acting that's timberwolves that that's. Speaks on the -- vacated just last name now shroud shroud. Yeah shot have to do -- as he hit just he'd been building a reputation itself as a criminal and he didn't want to -- that -- way to join him -- I would probably. This with was well cyclops spa membership. On the government yet here's a red Herring would get X-Men fan but putting -- like and it's the honor. Basically is about like like -- said that the west has been in his would be their own separate team a -- surface everything west of the Rockies. And so. Appreciate digital products -- Agassi and Kuerten Zarqawi to state and and Bobby kept saying mockingbird kept saying. It's this -- of its compound. Think you've -- what did you overcome wrote it. My writing stern no (%expletive) we're gonna start artists -- the -- of his own right Aaron bomb it was pretty good it was fun who lives a good issue. -- of this the second orders but yeah that's not necessary and now she knows -- and I wanted to run it. So it's it's like it's clearly -- John. And as a lesson from there it's Bob hall on -- pencils -- wrote Kevin and John earnings over the Senate president and there is forty feet up."
" Just as you've -- here and Gordon intern of the week -- so I don't tell you about data com. Good that come out of all the domain name it they've got 99 point 9% up time and 247 support. You can get dot com domain name for as low as one minute and a month you can get sick private parts of settings and -- products fatal minimize notebooks that you don't. If you of customers and you're brought them thinking and for really needed to me insecure certificate. And if you got videoblogging thing going on Internet TV -- dot TV domain name. So one of the new things good that it offers some news about -- congress and off all of these purchases. Good that it dot com. Netflix. So my favorite things that it offers over 90000. Dvds of parental leave a Blu-ray titles. You can get around the dvds with him one business day because as over forties centers that -- the TVs up from -- really quick glance those who start as -- supported -- a month. And refused to -- dot Netflix dot com -- assembly two week free trial that Netflix. I."
" Fan boys partnered with music to create a play -- to some of our favorite songs this city music dot com slash I fan -- download the songs let us know anything. In the future we're making nuclear dispute checked out enjoyed. In addition in music is offering fifty free songs I -- by viewers and it was that he music dot com slash -- ten points -- for pretrial. In music deliver songs and you universally compatible and simple to use. He music editors feature the best and brightest of the world that have been music making it easy to find used to follow what. He music is an amber wants for Independent music to choose from more than three point five million songs as -- 33 cents per song check that he music dot com slash I fan -- today."
" but it's funny it's funny that you bring it was his but it doesn't relation that you went back to -- kid and load them first number one issue that I went back. And I paid way too much for was X factor number one which -- is it -- The old plants yet that India and no I noticed this -- and I am going to Blanton who wrote it and visit the I've seen the cover it covers like then like in costume. And they're running -- the shooting and is how much higher. And -- noticed. None SI was -- came on later on sports no no no no no this -- is like 96. Mania 95 and music for original original Liam right after the brought backing grace the pages and asked for and then what they wanted to do was they wanted to book with five -- man. But the uncanny X-Men with wolverine all have some steam didn't want him. She shake out of this that the sort of book. And I remember a lesson I learned many times from. And then so it yeah if so I'm an island it's a late eighties I'm diving and expend more and I I accidentally. 35 bucks and that's which snouts and -- let me be fifteen. And our honor and it was it was great and I and I am I'm kill myself somewhat on the craters but it was all it would -- the pivotal. Ark throughout the first us or for the fact that cyclops left his wife -- would gene. And like. But -- didn't know he was married select there's all this attention -- Madeline Pryor it's it's easier -- exactly but let -- Madeline Madeleine existed in the state isn't getting authorization. Maybe you should get it differently couldn't stop talking yeah. But on November on I love them and the excitement of decent. And the excitement of Reading how these characters came together the kind of he information type thing -- pass that they've gone back to back this is the number one of them might -- things have more than one."
" There is that I like this is because it was not well organized at all like literally called the vision that. We didn't like I've said some appointments Imus and the by the and they show up it is like I'd clear the team. And it was like I never heard anything like it's not he doesn't know he's doing for me was a lot about."
" You have you know once you're here on one last men number one position that it. -- It's been this much this was -- yes or that the data and one thing I've noticed it going back sobriety box cells that the number one issue yes he does sixty miles -- pitch a series Xbox. Number one rubble and abroad it was a pick of the week. An escapist available on the net while that's kind of what all the he's -- the bucks you can grab. And -- have a -- pocket it was a big deal because -- the twit and yes. Only want tower just give it the -- wanted to and were ordered a Logan is all about be revealed that he was on Nagasaki and left as a -- about all the men that he he Xanana soccer here's Yuma. Who's your she -- of every number one issue at that hook it just gets excited ulcers and that it pays off. So that doesn't but he he's really really good at an -- well you know I was."
" Really excited like and I look back -- is going to be like nine -- I picked. Lesson number one because it did and a -- It set the tone for that what the series became and I I've I've went re read these sites we have did receptionist virtually every one -- you're done move on the next thing bomb. It was it was a really really good first issue but it's funny because when you read you a lot efforts issues you see me go back you see the cracks. There all is always wait too much in its. -- there is there's so much in this we're gonna talk about ours number one. -- mean they're just cram. I think they don't know -- human story that gets much they can begin to get it out this -- one. It was actually surprising how. How much she hat like you can and having finished the whole thing like there's there's new. At this point what was going to happen. The art was. You know -- and number one issue in the -- will be as good -- not quite dark ages and she's here it justice -- it this isn't really really well done well crafted first issue. Beautiful I mean just just really good."
" You're gonna talk about obstinate think right stars on. It didn't the series and all the problems particularly this why did this didn't."
" When this it runs and one written by. When this came out we were. Rabbit this this series you realize that this rate here there is legend it is the very first comic Iraq Richard ever recommended to me. And look at it turned -- Hot now we all felt -- first yeah first I hear very well barely knew you when you you know by this conflict you have to. My life's never changed. Yeah except that somebody stop listen. No but that and that book had a sniper here action was great tale. You know well what would happen if a generation of enough for each his powers and effect in the universe and an interest in the world especially here -- a lot of what here -- came out a lot of people said it was a lot like the bright stars. And it -- it -- introduced just this new universe that we had never really."
" Murder mysteries -- doing all the kids. And it was just it did not signing any first year followed by the most disappointing second here there's no comic called the most is appointed him out."
" Forward by the -- and had everything go forward yet the name was cute cha Ching -- who have never heard -- it's this."
" That was the almost the opposite number of a lot of -- if you talk about it really really important first issue. She's a daredevil number one here okay."
" That was Kevin Smith did you that was you know that this this is scientists. That's. Had a lot of number ones Matt Harris probably any sign discovered a black shirt and given that item and puts them. -- Better Marvel Comics I mean almost like. Like that image books are going to go and do. Better art and better production and so that was what this diversion marvelous in this is that laid the groundwork for a moral of that it it has everything 'cause everything that's in this position -- and -- was this was 1988 when this cannot and Kevin Smith was -- now I didn't run out of that. Right it. I know just -- all on -- later on. Kevin Smith I mean in 1988. Musician whose was that she's coming off moves across the mall rats chasing Amy -- college jobs. Is college. It does not deny his solidarity with the year after chasing -- that was his secret is restored and -- like and you didn't know how he's going to. Do in the end at that time. You know we're used to TV writers and movie writers celebrities doing comic books now that didn't happen yet I was being -- that. And this was so good yet -- I I just be -- it holds up this. It -- in this and one thing that's nice I realize that he's not a daredevil at all today. Is Catholic. Religion and -- has given that this is got some issues that we thought catholicism his own such as we don't. And but yet it's it's it is but this. -- There is an -- is -- the -- of the Church and everything an -- and -- are also ended up from -- Karen page on the dying for -- supplies -- it's an incredible first issue and and and also the one of the things you'll notice about this are also being humans number one here which -- about the same time you that's yours -- you this in this book this is the -- that -- community humans and business -- site that also. Is written by Paul Jenkins maybe if one is working its all time it's just setting that uses a I'm Paul JF IF -- both of these books when he opened -- as people cover yet folds over and the complete history of whatever you would need to -- smart. And literally this has. Panels from. Daredevil -- over the years these are moments machine you know this is where we are go there and and I think I'd never seen a book that had this kind of production I mean Joe posadas artwork. I mean you -- you Democrats again dude. Your and he was drawn out and and not only that like you can even -- like on geeks like. There's two things that go really well together and the colors than just the whole it was beautiful book -- there and that really. Made a big difference to me and that got me back up into -- our. Yeah."
" The it's."
" gives a freak."
" There there was a comic they came out -- a couple of years later that that similar rice's first port through our organization assembly. Which is powers number one Bob -- and ran a tremendous Michael in an -- and in on the only from it cannot originated as Thomas is currently being printed on my icon the icon -- for marvel. Not having that partner cannot find it first issue thought pulses. I have an island versus -- that you got me you you went too excited by the whole group and this is so at this time -- what it was like 99 as the late 99. And down. Then this had been writing a lot and putting a lot of books and two caliber in the through the through image in the -- worldwide and you know jinx and goldfish -- torso a fire. Accept what I never heard it and had never heard and ice and am I and I don't remember is that if I'm pretty sure it was Connor who's that you you should check this out --"
" I literally was in the store. And I saw the covers and I thought they looked like. There a minute backers in the present serious and they and I was like him and I saw -- I didn't see any super -- Okay that's collecting get behind that and I gotta say I didn't. Really appreciated -- the first two there are right and and for some reason I stuck with it and then later like those I'm very -- exactly this. Mom re reading the first issue powers now. It's like the best of everything and justice -- I mean. It's all there like the first part is fast talking David -- our homicides style dialogue and police dialog and it's. Is that hostage negotiation railway. And then. -- Pilgrim shows up and has the quirky weird interaction with her. And then it also this kid. If he rescues from a hostage situation who I -- I should have gone back of his Calista and we've been goes on to become get rid of -- later -- story. And I didn't actually have realized -- that's a lot of time has passed that's why they have a connection yet telecoms test yet I didn't I didn't I don't know why the book the book is a ball is -- name -- the book has evolved from that first -- from I don't think. But that because the cricket stadium and in the multi and then a mob -- characters. Where and this you know like they've powers and is one of the most important works is that in I think in -- this to me is is this is that book that sort of brings everything together for making this doesn't fall into this category combo -- not verdict it's a book that is six. It yeah yeah it's it's one was when I first Indy series that I started following hum registered tomorrow night. Vertigo -- an -- so yeah definitely. Then today and read her mind and I wish that this wasn't just doing. You know I I'd love to see that this that is yes and not I don't love his work tomorrow -- doing some of the best work at marvel but this is the edgy stuff the solution. To let him if you go back and you look at the stuff he used to do like to just let him go nuts on on something he can think of and make up from Korea they -- still doing. Hours and it is there's one more page here that I I wanted to bring up is that that I think was the moment for that I like. Oh this is a great book. Walkers in the police station. And paralysis and in there and -- I cannot conversation as a silent and elements such as what's clearest. And it -- Of the opportunities like. I I don't know slick and nobody seems to know they're not like all that's him and has been as in oh yeah. You know that was him and -- can't and you couldn't get away that it tomorrow what you can you can -- you may you may be here I was -- nova care that we get it would have probably actually changed and added it's there is an effect and is that image allowed it to push that little -- and who's this man."
" These these are some of our favorites and I think what really we will what -- about it is there's a hole with a -- promise -- at bat. This is going to be the great book is this going to be the next power is gonna -- runs from. Apartments or you're always meeting and always the chance that this is the -- and open up discovered something great that's big debate the big draw --"
" Yeah what's cool about these these ones for example is that -- Let -- turned into something but it was a lot of first issues that I went and -- I'm sure I don't remember them. -- transit like being the cool thing -- isn't like I can look back and go while you know because of this have been reading -- I'm number one bullet points. -- A couple of years younger monsters is going to be too bad now with two good number one the didn't turn out well let him actress and they actually who."
" Over the remember I I I really think -- stars anymore that's been run over I was like -- starts and I've forgotten. -- love the --"
" Issue is who make the through -- eight issues were were great and bombs when we mention -- and -- to a three. Yeah they're really payoff is much other you know like I just love that there's there's totally a private it was weird looking back -- Yeah finding anyone insane and I and it would also none of that but that to say like look back -- paid off I'm glad that I found this and -- we've got to -- through experience that right over and over years mrs. -- medical. So do you a favor and Iran comic that he might tell us about I mean also topic --"
" Or -- voicemail at 18 and was just 3262697. He tells -- one issue -- keep it short."
" And then you could also go to this post on this show and I can what I commoner vision through dot com slash I and -- In the forums because they're in and tell us about first issues that that you love do your first time company your first. And on the."
" Offered one hit it it didn't need help attract -- legend of what number one I love fragments. Muslim -- here what about walk number one that was funny book that would cause a -- that was a big political. Billion -- one and that's been handbook three expanded next knows a lot of fun I -- there's lots of war front line. That was a great because of the prisoners it was good yeah holding this is Sam got a hold. And months I didn't. I stay out of balances. Yeah. --"
" Another problem."
" This episode I -- boys brought him but I go to his outcome Netflix dot com and the music. 11 disclosed. And brought. That's in the USA. Hey -- and -- the comic book discussion show.
