The Best Comics of 2009... so far

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 – running time 27:41
What are the best comics we've seen this year? What are the titles you should be looking out for? We go through all our favorite titles of the year so far!

People are always asking what books they should read, and this week, Ron, Josh, and Conor round up their favorite books of 2009 so far.

There hasn't been a better time to be a Superman fan in a long time. With James Robinson, Greg Rucka, and Sterling Gates writing fantastic stories on Superman, Action Comics, Supergirl, and World of New Krypton, the Man of Steel's world has never been stronger or his world more interesting.

Sticking with the DC Universe, a little housecleaning is being done of the Flash family by masters Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver on Flash: Rebirth. Great for new and old Flash fans, this is the corner of the DCU to watch.

Mark Waid, having taken the reigns at BOOM! Studios is back to his best writing form with Irredeemable, the tale of a Superman gone very, very bad.

Glen Brunswick and Dan McDaid get all Kirby cosmic with their Image series, Jersey Gods, about some very powerful dudes and a love story in New Jersey.

Over at Marvel, the event to be reading is War of Kings, along with Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, spearheaded by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Self-contained, smart, and fun, it's everything you want from a Marvel comic book.

Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill are back with League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Century: 1910 from Top Shelf Comics and Knockabout, and we couldn't be happier. Make sure to check out our previous show on League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, with Kevin O'Neill.

Joe Kelly is back with a vengeance, whipping up comic book magic with a boatload of great artists on such books as I Kill Giants, Four Eyes, Amazing Spider-Man, Bad Dog, and more. Make sure to check out Josh's interview with Joe Kelly here.

Dark Horse's Umbrella Academy: Dallas blew us away just like the first story, Apocalypse Suite did. Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba are both mad scientists of comic book excellence, and that's all there is to it.

Itching for Garth Ennis writing World War II comics? It's OK, admit it! The good news is, there's Battlefields from Dynamite Entertainment.

Finally, against nearly all odds, IDW is putting out some incredible G.I. Joe comics. I know, we can hardly believe it either.

" Well. You know that you know that we get that -- like. Hey what's what should I read along those lines also send money to Africa books yet those are different okay. And and they say -- I want to read comics which in every death get that that's a business. This cable."

" I've -- was brought to you by godaddy.com and netflix.com."

" Perhaps an iFanboy an -- discussion shallow minded as Ron Richards and Telefonica Patrick and I am just planning it. Like we said we often get -- What should I read that all the information we get so what's good -- a good with -- to take a step back. This year we look at everything that that. Has had a very excited recently this year 2009 so far what's that what's this stuff that that we really. Connected with a -- excited about the next couple of old titles -- characters and then really did dozens of new titles and we're checking accounts. It's -- it's."

" Did your apartment yeah will be an important note before we start a lot of good stuff yet this is just some obvious example yes we -- whole room on the -- we have. For lots of books -- this yes yeah rises. And a -- low level or to a black S as a moratorium on -- love for it and you're making won't do it -- It got there got a weird. Yeah one -- anything wrong they want one thing that I think Josh second degree is Superman books. Out more of them believe it superhero. -- should yet Allen will butts off more of them. As a whole look real good it's an odd moment in time it is an arrow Amber's does that really would when he started up I thought I don't want to buy albums and books -- Action comics super girl that's of that world you could top yet and they're -- be -- origin -- one or use whatever they're calling it looks at him the announcement came -- this that Superman is not going to be in the Superman book and I thought. That does a loose I think that's. Yeah you -- That book the da -- well listen you got the engine Robinson roughed up Brandon."

" This comes to -- Superman chipped up to a -- direct action together and I didn't. It's Jeff Jim Robinson writes. Allen abruptly rights will be at the time right outside. Brokerage action around president and Robin Roberts right the world's nuclear going to get it at sterling did threats of development just -- or invoked and there."

" All really good -- why isn't -- that's -- on all idols -- stepped up. You know he's gotten better Pete woods is doing really good job in the world's nuclear non. Does France and -- or the newest browser I have product I would not give us a lot of Superman yeah it works really well this -- their trip this regardless of the action but. The one thing -- think it's a big story then it's a big long story and it feels for books the other side at Phoenix it is. Admittedly a little difficult to jump in. Although I think you can to a certain extent one of the cool things all the world new Krypton books. Is that they're all numbered and have a little things things they lowered their little -- and you'll get -- I -- but if this is the first time networks. Whose owners and the first time that I can recall where. Being deep. Maine's super hero which is Superman. And books worthy of you saying why these books are really good which are really that way but it is an hadn't been for awhile so it's and it's a really great time for Superman. It's very impressive yeah if you look at the -- large story that's going on in for growth for books and it. But it's not like -- work out of it because there's so much going on yeah multiple plot lines well you know like -- got a great record is not. Have -- and -- right and the stuff that he's doing I'm really -- a lot activists -- the -- yet -- learned a lot multiple long -- stories I love -- or not thrilled with. The earliest the sort of first bit of stuff that he did on Superman and I have found that. Even so army and the stuff that he's really well known for he does take a little while to get going and get his hands wrapped around -- to build up the things that make it worth it later. Arm and I think he should -- Yet to educators models starts and he's and he's really aged extraordinary interest -- character. This is the kids at the start bash comics and there are also religious and I didn't want -- I would not would have to get like any of this I really do. World's new Krypton also is probably my favorite up just. Superman at a different setting and it focuses because that's focus on his character as everybody else has has powers he's under court. Krypton so there'll crypto Victorian so they're all like he's an apparent sign him he's not special cause she's special because -- we have not because what he did yes which is which is great. So I'm not run you."

" I'm very excited for the flash -- project when it was announced -- San -- my camera and ran up to Jack -- night -- his flash has been so men for so long -- has -- like two or three years -- if not more on this -- check documents -- her and bring back Barry Allen and being kind of -- into the green -- 56 years she news first couple machines and now it's fantastic this is the event -- the summer -- very happy to have."

" It's been been good so Garza's two guys who really want to do your job again that's evidence like -- putting in the work at the putting a lot of thought. -- we talked to transfer of up that. The book. -- is. In. Actually."

" It's good to see it's it's a much of ram but so it's flat saw it a lot."

" Yes it Nickelodeon's Brit coming into this kind -- brings into the forefront and -- makes an event and it. And hopefully this means momentum into the flash on none of my -- hound them as the with green lantern that slick job I mean after years clear example five years and."

" I interviewed you you you talkative he's he planned on writing into -- not penalize you unless you stay were very respect with how is it so I assume. Plus BF its its Atlanta. June oh boy who must have mentioned relent and one of the best things this year is we'll do a -- shown that Portland later yeah so tendons -- Obama yes or so of them so it would be. This table if not for the shows again. -- surprise has been -- studios. The general Marc wade is Melvin he's now the editor in chief when he's starting to see the books that he. Has has brought up come out and it's been it's been great about one's been here redeemable which Margaret Wright himself and it's very it's basically. To take its ticket Superman yeah that's funny because he really wants right -- remember they never will get into the good -- Iran almost like out."

" It's it's a thought let's listen to lend my character fall from grace and and minutes and and we talked I talked him and that lets it become a few weeks if you see you check up -- NCAA says that it's not. Within -- on the -- doesn't the last minute. Which is it yeah yeah I'm sorry exactly it's basically what happens Superman goes nuts but how do you fight that heavy survive. -- had to read comments about on message board walk past thing. Exactly really what I guess what I feel like ignore appreciate may not screw this -- It's it's been really nice nice -- we took -- shot you know. He probably acceptable and books but yeah. It's been really -- and then the titles into the characters ever like it's it's it's it's an -- is a world that we have no incentive so every issue has taught me a little more I find that -- makes it easier -- within a bit -- a Red -- I think -- in his -- 52 -- a lot of them will do you know who -- but I'll zoom -- and written -- then we -- records record for a year yeah. Aka -- A packet that could handle it this year with the should be Erica you. Wreckage found a good surprise it's priceless for me and I think you've been. Earlier -- and atlases and guys have yeah yeah. Well Jersey doesn't and his comments. And it is interesting because they're very similar walk to -- Kirby talk with -- it's burying cosmic -- looking their -- in these kind of space kind of warriors sacirbey -- Holland and things like that. But the story is really Anderson because the one of the characters crashes and -- Jersey in meets girl woman and falls in love there. And and so it's taking the Koznick insanity fighting you know big kind of thing titans kind of classic maps and then combining wow that's Kirby yeah ask that. But big money mundane everyday -- let's -- elegant home that can manipulate and so it's it's really time adjusting for certain yeah. And art is beautiful. -- You guys. Love love love. You cuts could both married and have an Atlantic when do you think I am happy -- I've ever so I've only that one of them so I think actually you got that good of the opposite argument are you more things and then from Marvel Comics has been a high point for me. --"

" You know we've been through a lot of marvel events yet over the past. What seems like decades and you know they keep coming in and and this has been one of the ones that's delivered very much so it. In the spirit a lot of the annihilation of -- conquest that is well. Where it's it's more under the radar but each how to do it that it -- stuff gets more notoriety some more people attacking this sort of books was."

" What -- left -- when a -- CNN's isn't this has -- slow build them in the past years because. Nobody really concise and annihilation happened that was going to -- an architect and an M Atlantic into the winds and it. And part of it was it was no longer on the joke is that. You know no no longer on lasts. But this one is into in the high twenties -- and -- and into the end I'll pass the second year and gnome has been great you have more or no money no record of rate this stuff Carty is out because I think a year later going to -- it comes along and a title and I would never thought you'd even read what I want to strengthen their -- I know what they read it and it. You know it's different but no it was about one character for the most part regarding got a big chance ensemble cast and they've they've both work and it's and they're both kind of them they're both. A little mix of science fiction action you know playing her again -- and not the science fiction more and you know slamming into action -- kind of -- is not science fiction what is known business -- business aces on the facade of imports are tough stance that. But on but it's all have homeland on this and that war kings which is taking part taking -- taking the -- are taking drawing us into humility in the summer -- all these."

" Characters -- the basic premise is that in humans who are descended from -- Say screw this they take over the leadership of the entire -- empire and then they go to war over this -- and who are being led by alcohol in him who is he's got her crazy brother. And and in. -- of the garden of the gods in the middle of it and and and -- was mixed up and it it's just. It's very old school -- is. And that is great about its -- operates -- us you know war royal families and and and romance but not like him you know not. Also relatively soft campaign whose three book is and that's that you can."

" Nobody not remain in the books and join -- in your house in not in -- I don't know right now it's in the -- in this they invented the little."

" It'll actually -- these two books plus the -- it's. Not like -- spent a whole Marley character hockey team looks."

" You don't need you know there's the dark pocket -- engineers -- a couple little in Islam is a couple of different you know late march and he's there isn't breaker -- I -- like the name. DISH Network I don't know about me. And -- multi thousand. I think what he's got a big chance I have you received his comeuppance when we hope lived through it for years and that was not a good introduction. So those -- The good kind of superhero books that that means Lamar treatment for example talked. What we want Nestle. Which will come after the break we'll -- some stuff."

" Campbell is brought to you by godaddy.com. Web hosting from godaddy includes 99.9. Percent up time 24 sevenths support and free access to hosting connection."

" I was very very excited that the next installment of we return -- and came out this country's top shelf. It Alan Moore and Kevin and have left while storm in DC. And now -- on their own again well sort of they're actually it's a joint production it's not just so -- also not about to publish books in the UK so. To say it's just tough talk is exactly correct. The last in the cannot was was the black dossier of the returning gentlemen now -- Yeah hot Wimbledon really get a lot out of it I I can't say I like I like parts of it I it was sort of bored by this. What the dossier was he was not a specific assault humorous story it was supposed to be like. Isn't a secret but I -- files but that it -- Spun out of control and became something else because there may be down -- little eccentric but got what's important and more more attention reviews book is very yeah. While there's a lot of neat stuff and and a lot of work that went into but it wasn't a specific narrative that in the sense that we've been used to. Century which is three volume series and now the first was nineteen -- takes place in. I didn't exactly know will be won in the sixties and in -- and and sort of support is the third volume. And dumb of me -- yes it was the first first volume of this nonsense is. Issues as they're using its true. But there was a six as you miniseries that's point one of the first one then there was the second volume to -- that was -- martian invasion and then there's this -- but does it Augusta given what just it was America."

" Through it knows that the smugglers but doesn't isn't the father for I know it's not. A topic that we go without more says. Credit card numbers it's three volumes. But so this is good this is a departure in terms of format because previously trigger an amendment issues in this comes out a little thicker almost like -- probably bigger than any three of them with almost bigger than two issues it's it's a good deal at like 972 pages. I I think I really enjoyed this book it was it was a lot of things -- like in the second kind of read I enjoyed it even more. It's strange it's that he's definitely gone further away from where it started but. It's beautiful and -- art is great in this gorgeous -- and that is color really well and it just. It's it's worth it it's until they get that kind of thing that you can keep reading and it keeps giving more back -- it's it's very much worth that the price. And now I'm a very much for them for the future one's net. All we're in the Joe Kelly or else restaurants. Joe Phillies have a great year John Kerry he's been -- ten plus years worth the mid nineties were the Marlins and then pool them and things that X amount of minutes and it's easy to Superman and ethnic bomb. -- appear -- past year he's up put out a budget for your work tomorrow from my image after image. And recently -- giants was collected and trade paperback and there's also -- and mad dog. Whose banks hang up through through vertigo had to do and is now a lot is you regret is indeed become marks enemies fineman Richard great -- 07 great years pretty much. Anything written by Joe Kelly this year -- in the medical thing about it is though is that they're all very different -- rise which is I'm I'm in love with the slower pace as. The -- to -- that's really simply the that the reason. And I'm cool with that because it does look like anything -- beautiful arm like a giant is almost like his. I think yeah snatches the best it's different there. They're all good but it's I to a giants is is an example it's an emotional story about a girl. Kind of growing up in dealing with you know life and loss and things that it's not superheroes. Not the other is a little -- facility. This is the kind of -- the to have somebody doesn't comics like yeah let's do the same way that like box office poison or write something that you -- This is an example of -- great source told them come in graphic novel format I."

" Think what what comes either from Reading it is that this is the work of a creators put his. Partners personality into the thing he's doing it's like he's laid a lot of things out their parents very emotional and you know it's funny that I've. It's very hard to explain what is without giving away what is he kind of just have to go at it because it does change your expectations of what is the beginning to what it becomes a very different. This is a good story I -- book of the month not that was June book of the month. Jan Ken Laura great artist look at key yet and and it really easy and just that he'd had. This story for a long time and he was waiting for the right artists and found out the enemy like it sees this combination of of anime Arab -- And and European comics all the same time and it doesn't look like anything else doesn't feel like anything else that is."

" To me its -- it was in was the cool but it's also difficult whimsical. But it also. It's also easy connect to end and and the story telling is this pop options this one's great and and if you -- his -- but wouldn't -- second -- I want to -- the end of for -- and -- right now. Right now let's we have a law in the Obama doing about it what equipment and found more credit rules with that that happens. To relic. Dallas yeah. Second by second by Gerard way and liberal buzz a serious dark horse. First volume was kind of the second volume. Was nothing but fun. It was off the rails and I don't mean that a bad way right I mean they went to Vietnam they follow hot war on travel the whole thing senator and assassination of Kennedy."

" Read this yet but first -- and it. Portrait is great effect reducing. Better order and allowed -- doesn't set ups -- no explanations and it just run that ended the characters are all very well defined bits if you don't know the umbrella academy as it's like -- Superhero team of of these genius kids that were assembled by am -- mad scientist. Family yes that's and then they all kind of fight each other and have different relationships and but it just it's weird have to get that basis set up there's time travel and secret organizations and talkin' monkeys it's. They never explain the talking. Please take just our our there there. That's -- little -- we're talking monkeys is totally fine and and and and if you do talk there you -- Not to be trusted Canada trust among them north shark's body. The Dallas to me. What this is something great things about a look at the art doesn't look like anything else it's a it's a beautiful book. It really has to rethink any of my own creative talent because that's just imagination."

" It really does represent what read comments -- you can't really distorted -- a medium is very well let's see goofy but like he certainly has really good at this and he. You here let's let's of these qualifications popular vote for you so here's what but you know it is yeah you establish a consultant."

" Does not only settlement moratorium if you want to talk about umbrella academy and I don't want to carry -- My Chemical Romance yeah and that ended the set over then -- they've -- made the point -- establishes his chops he's good. It was like -- reviews for the watchman. Everybody had to start with three paragraphs but what -- out of a book -- to stop."

" Josh I could not be happier that in 2009 -- and it has been able to do is battlefields committees senators."

" From that. Absolutely he had done for awhile after preacher he got to do a lot of war books through vertigo or storage on. And they don't stay and sell that well and so. He now is now dynamite found a place where they let him do that again I do I get some sort of blood -- again the boy is he let me do this. Isn't it yeah -- go into."

" and -- of the -- the end of last year's night and I bridges there in the regular and allows."

" They're all different I was right. They're all different totally different he's been taking us to place in the war which. What they say we're -- are Americans may not know as much about because Americans get a lot about. DA in Normandy and the march to Berlin and all that stuff."

" Which is about Russian female pilots which which these are all based on true the true events but true things that happened -- war. So that which is it was Russian female tough fighter pilots. Techies is about British tank. Brigades in the British tanks Bradley were pieces of (%expletive). And dear Billy was this horrific tale about what to think thinner British nurse an air squadron and then she was rejected this horrible but the big. Good stories have been right all different aspects of the war. In small -- feel. Tonight like and longer. Yeah now."

" But I like that he's switching around a lot of things that I because they're good ticket want more twinkies and that's all I got my ticket there's only two I don't like -- but. And you know sometimes -- Action -- is the third isn't going to be about a month ago. There's a -- streaming between regular like I imagine like for me I've got but actually he's -- like five year low stress middles -- copies in the middle schools differ hasn't done is still out and I can't. I -- like I thought about your cupcake cup kicks something I guess. This is one of each in the opening. The faces a different show with a different show we'll do a dual dual cup picture later in the I don't think we will sustain you read a sauces. Totally GI jobs just. That that."

" First of all. IEW brought to judge a license. From that -- I guess they have the last. And put out three books to -- the movie that's coming out. But I don't think you know but they're going to do the movie there all the our own agendas -- the legacy and there are. Really good so it's like shockingly so budget -- cobra has been you know it's been -- than twice already. Just a corporate as the media is that ministers holly chuckles it is it's a tree cobra -- origin sounds retarded but it's not it's it's like a spy 24 -- Violence and serious agree. Gritty military jail has yet georgians is the is is now ongoing series which gets any sort of a mini but he's been so popular. Told Georgian dejected team predicted that. This is chuck Dixon a bad news -- military's done all our ordinance -- The -- books did do is chuck Dixon an engine of corporal -- not getting it Hannah Hannah I am Soledad is that correct or does it. It might happen who wrote the original marbles you're on -- GI which was so great and which also -- it was put in the trades. If you want to read you original marvel books because they're big -- I'm at -- when."

" This is violated that and that's important there's no new -- he's gonna is gonna he's -- have a saying is you're going to pick up these books you don't have to read anything but and arm and and and a parting let me say. I want to judge a book. -- and I swear upon. Somebody's brain was of the blue men. Opposite from me just who just yet up over alone just read it if you are not. Blown away I Wii shop. Yeah you could take did you did you load off the cover and it just yet really collected samples it's -- chuckles chuckles and liked by all rights that should be a horrible. Horrible book -- Hawaiian and makes it a habit the comments that we get. Well you know on the -- because people are tests themselves stunned but. Everybody's -- is blown away by -- Georgia isn't really strong sort of military justice was in the military uses Vietnam and Mikey he writes authenticity there's lots of stuff formations and tactics and things like that even a million title. On this little bit cartoon here but so did the thing that does that I think is that everybody in the main judge a book is run around in their actual. Full uniforms elected to stand now having lunch with a grenade straps itself."

" Many isn't in yet and judge orders it just right where regular fatigues it. And all well good all the the vehicles are in the regular digital book but -- It's a different kind of thing right it's also strong and it's well done right it is budget director political thrillers as news to you and did you go to. This is -- surprises here I think for me is there is a movie tie in book which I don't know anything that's at a critical look like he -- furthers our triple what -- saying we know about that right but. I think for me to go this book is big surprise. Scheduled -- for me yeah man. It's great race and you wouldn't expect that it expects. To get 24 and comic form when I -- judge took over last but he -- with the white shirts beat yourself -- Among Raleigh you don't miss -- that's the midpoint -- we haven't been suffering a lot of the huge over hype for stuff now -- that there isn't a solid year. There can't last there's a lot of this thing's gonna degrade and not just like. Just finding good common to finest that you like and and look at this we don't have a secret division and we don't have to read restaurant crisis was not from our brain has been and Marmol but -- that is is that is that. Or examples of -- and just working really in the what that -- not really decent and so. But it's an important is good comics so important -- too new to make their best of the here its just authority to people do what you -- about it Robin to weigh in on that's all good. But it's too soon to -- too soon too much. -- a -- and some short we left the book out right just tell us which ones did you also talk about amber and I found. And you could set a voice mail if you want to talk about these books you can keep it short sweet for a thirty seconds -- from a stage ambushed a 3262697."

" Great books all right let's talk about some of -- that I -- what -- comment on this show. You can we write stuff about books all the time if you look at the recommendations you look -- that's what I think about. In comics is all sorts of great right cupcakes will talk about twinkies really happen in my between your article I don't I and a promise that why is yet -- overlap between -- And battlefields. Have while you're there yeah well it's. Accredited and now it's written these men that why -- there you go and -- and what com slash store and you pick up. You pick up the love how responsibility quotient. Raft he shared that limited edition just fifteen dollars and you can also benefit whenever there which which also to parks lose that murder. So that I can but I comforts -- the books multiply -- there's a lot. Wow typically for which -- the mine. Back in this business."

" An area that the dialogue that yeah. They're trying to make it at some point the rhinoceros look at what my -- here here. Look at -- I kid and I need to get developer."

Ron, Conor and Josh point out the comic book greatness of 2009 and we're only half way through it!!!! Good times!!!

Chime in with any books that you think they missed. (Except for Green Lantern which is getting its own show).

Did Ron have allergies or was it a late night of rock n' roll the night before? Take care of yourself, Richards!

Great selection of books, btw.

The best of 2009?

I absolutely have NO idea. I'm just getting into these things, and btw I live in Norway so these things are hard to get my hands on!

However, I just started reading The Surrogates by Robert Venditti (can't remember who drew them) The sequel The Surrogates: Flesh and Bone is soon out, so I'm hoping that'll turn out well. Last year, Y: The Last Man was the best. It was FANTASTIC! Just started on Runaways by same author, read the first two volumes. Extremely fun, in a Sky High-kinda way! And I love Sky High!

What was up with Ron's hair in the credits? Wow.

Great episode. I'm definitely going to have to check out War of Kings now, that sounds good.

Right now Rex Mundi, Ex Machina, and Captain America have been some of my favorites, and I get the feeling the final few issues of Zero Killer will be some of the best books in the second half of 2009.

You guys really need to start reading INCREDIBLE HERCULES. That is one of the best comics to come out for 2009.

Ron looks high.

Also, its possible not everyone is asking about comics. 'Whats Good?' is slang for 'Whats up' or 'Hows it going'.

Books I have enjoyed this year:
Savage Dragon has been consistently good since #145
Pluto by Urasawa and Tezuka. If you loved Monster by Urasawa, you owe it yourself to pick this up. Published bi-monthly
Punisher by Remender. If you're missing Fear Agent, this is teh next best thing.

The G.I. Joe: Cobra miniseries really surprised me. Like marcushill73 said Rick Remender's Punisher is one of my current favorites. The new zero issue of Absolution by Christos Gage I believe is looking like something I will enjoy also.
