The most powerful name in Marvel Comics is not Galactus. It's not Magneto. It's not even Dr. Doom. It's Brian Michael Bendis.
From his humble beginnings as a struggling independent comic book artist with such works as Jinx, Torso, Fortune and Glory and Powers to his current reign as the shaper of the Marvel Universe with Secret Invasion, New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, and Ultimate Spider-Man, Brian Michael Bendis has seen it and done it all in comics.
Bendis sits down with Marvel editor Lauren Sankovitch to have a chat with iFanboy about the state of the Marvel Universe, the future of the Ultimate line, the status of Powers both in comics and on-screen, and the power of his own internet community.

" The deception of less than boys brought you by. Dead space always did survive square space. And GoDaddy."
" The Baltimore compound with Brian Michael Landis. I thank you didn't. I didn't know we are video filming so I'm always catch you by surprise -- head to head and we are marvel at airlines like -- and now. So Lama -- some work to chase you down at a convention this is your phony appearance this year I."
" I haven't done a lot of conventions the last couple years only guys the only stuff -- you kind of want to stay home and make the donuts and and and focus on the work I know. The generation before army kind of the nine these guys are doing a lot of shows and the books were coming out regularly that's a trap. You -- volunteer because you know we're here I was being very nice to us I mean it's very nice certainly see the appeal of coming out having -- it would be nice to -- Osama Malone in my basement. So. By the -- come out so we do come out especially where in the middle Aussie invasion he -- a little overwhelming how. Nice of one's being and how much of it in this area to -- about ten years or you're like every shell. William -- you know I doing here. Comin' up are -- near an Indy creator. Sometimes the shows are you're literally selling your book one at a time. No joke your Little -- I go to San Diego with a handful of jinx is an -- sellable. I don't know I was getting home and that that that's light that we led -- in almost ten years and -- used to it after awhile and and now. But yes so it's a very different. New experience for me now but it's certainly better than. What -- was I don't want to go back to -- and president."
" Different phase -- career as much better and so sticking your prayer the big you know the big event tomorrow event of the summer has been secret invasion that are you were so were we were almost idea -- the end is inside them issue went sixty and I recently I."
" I am way into next summer's for me it for me it's I am. Very excited about what's going to happen in the event there's book books those good authority announced I darkened vendors coming out. Right after she can invasion. Part of an overall. Concept called dark rain though wolf fact a lot of them all the universe that I think people really. Enjoy that they haven't seen before that. Reveals things about certain characters that we haven't seen before and that's the kind of stuff and I love. So that's when I'm in right now some very very excited for that to come out all the stuff world bickering about online is really old news to -- no you know what I'm actually. And when like issue 6 came out I -- I was very relieved you know there's always this. Varying degree. Will people react with the way you want it to react to sometimes you race and they go up that's going to (%expletive) everybody off and it either does or doesn't you know these kind of things. Issue six particularly the last FC division the reaction has been overwhelmingly what I hoped it would be. So I'm if anything I'm relieved because if you bought it up till now you'll enjoy the -- great -- you know. So down now I feel relieved and more or less they didn't taint. Financially but they have no control over but that it's still something you worry about it did well. The reaction to it is is what I would have hoped for. And so I mean I can enjoy it a little bit. It's I do enjoy is not the word but visible but doesn't come up -- you know."
" Well I LSI's it was a story -- on it was a little unique in that he's the main book which hasn't criticism that was kind of slow going. Up until the last couple issues but then with a side books is that XP a lot of people so that's where the action has been and that's where you -- going in back in time leading up to tie that into the main."
" you know that's all going is always an odd criticism for me because Laura we'll talk to -- I I I in my head I taken issue I keep writing inning -- like 35 pages and don't shoot -- and again. All this and today and I do I get it all I don't cut it off until they do I take my giant -- and shove it down at 22 pages I don't want to think its act. This thing it's full story. And then when it comes out to a that's pretty slow Obama oh my god that today and I so I have a different view -- in -- have a different view of the way I. Well what I want to seat come out of a comic. The other one aspect of it I think people who depicting heroes would be in the savage land as long as they were but -- and nobody -- it's a funny think -- because they were in it. A total of like forty pages like they were in a little bit. For those public it was like we're just stuck until it is an issue after issue -- if you who's one of the elements of the -- story. Any of Beirut it is structurally -- hold by -- it was the first two acts at the end of the two X they got out to get to the third act. So it it held pretty good there. So and I did solitude in the first excited in the first issue I got to the savage land so it's not like. They have to leave this -- plan the next page obviously I told you that part of the story will now have a seven plants I don't know anything I didn't."
" Yeah really win either way it could happen. So -- and so now the with the of the stories go that as NC the moment he got the -- even planning this from like day one and now reality and you know things like civil war happen and in these accounts that happens we'll."
" Actually the reality is I start planning it from a new vendors number one of them was -- four -- time actually and I IA I thanked his stated Tom here's what I want to do going to do this I just signed a long a contract a -- lives. I was definitely rarefied air as far as freelancers you really don't know how long they could stand the book. But I knew I if you're buying it doesn't tank I -- I get to hang out for a while and new vendors launch very strong and I see here's here's here's the plan. And if you do it right we really have to keep it hush -- really to keep between ourselves and not even to other artists are distant and kind of congress Johnson's column or something in. And really make it has the reveals got to be as exciting and hopefully. You know did something people talk about it. But they're gonna crop up lead -- for another that was the whole thing so what apple is I had this plan and relay that we told higher -- this is the plant. So in civil war. Came about part of which I was part of I sat back as the queen of the scrolls going -- this helps me overhaul -- to -- and it made me actually feel. That that what we were doing was the right thing like this all its organically helping it may need to look at it this is the right way to go. You know because I could easily pulled out an -- and never known that and but but these things are really only. Accentuated. The experience and it was very easy to his as the scrolls would be there. Trying to do their business oh here comes civil war where does that help them or hurt them that helps them what would they do. You I you can then be the scroll in the writing and in figured out Syria was there anything."
" Happen that really going to have to up your plans and you're just like I can't figure out how to write around that's sort everything kind of fell in place that nicely mostly Jeff slopes were but I just and ignore it -- Let's red Hulk fan -- don't know and I did it is not nah not really because by the time. -- about it two years ago we told everyone in the room hears that the plan -- like it wasn't supposed to be in the in the foremost -- can -- it was supposed to be like it would happen in the at -- books wherever writes that he is much bigger story. In and then the marble matters the model said while you're you're really setting up another big event here I mean if -- if this really works the way you want to work. It's it's it's an event and -- OK but I thought is -- could cost them I thought there to kind of -- that ability gets like one turn you know. And though I doubt this is today they'd instead. Here's what he -- issues do you thing and take your time looks enough like I could get we gotta we gotta you ready to go in. And that's the formatting. So by that time everybody was already in they're kind of like aiming towards it with me. And it would survive many retreats that these retreats that we do these creative retreats the very intense. We end up crying a lot there's a lot of crimes. But we cheat invasion survived but four of them. Which means which I mean it made me feel really good like it's gonna survive the Internet because it in."
" Oh yeah. Okay okay okay okay."
" base recently won the game critics' awards best of 32008 for best action adventure game doesn't start October 16. For more information and or the game had dead space dot EA dot com. And if you don't hardcore gamers United States is easily won the most anticipated games this holiday season so don't wait ordered its base now."
" So now any normal writer reading the adventures to -- titles -- a division would be enough work but it's -- But again but -- you also people who have -- a bunch of other votes and ultimate Spiderman which has been going on since. What 2000 as the bunny ears and a nine in however I start in 1999 but it launch in 2000. So I'm having a tenth anniversary special promise I'll. Eight LB guy it's it's a book I can't believe I I was offered it. I had a lot of false starts and marble."
" In my earlier years including us but it on the series and never went anywhere and so yes are betting you finally get the call going to start spreading and over from scratch. And they are actually it was pitch to me as the sixties you mini series of people don't even remember now marvel it was funny because it was. And I kind of ignore them it kept going and they convicted of -- seem to have these are just kept riding in the it was a trick I did a sandwich which -- I got -- that it was a five issue miniseries and I just kept typing things like Evan -- getting here you the got a 5050 chance we'll just you know. You know so that's a check every up and comers this that I learned that just ignore this ignore it at -- here what you want to hear and CS so it's amazing that the that the whole line actually survive there's a lot of lines that have come and gone in the history -- they -- back about two yourself plot but a year and a half for the implode. The reason I think it survived is because joke up to his wording of the small kept it to the -- court titles and help little bit here and there. Didn't show the world ultimate on to everything because they thought it would be worth when it sure. 20000 extra sales which a lot of people do they've done in the history comics says very grateful that he -- where they really mean it. -- this tight -- Thing that was really -- focused and you know very true to itself so. I can't believe just -- the job I can't believe the books on production and hundred and somewhat funny I lie beyond enough hundred thirties and -- its --"
" And 100 issue 127 to the -- Mike and next week we get there -- just Daniels in the final throes of production right. Yeah so we're very happy about in -- handles you know. -- Daniel -- artist on the and it also has become a big thing that some we look forward like Lester is mark brooks this what is David we'll find tainted with the final days ahead in the a lot he did held cat. Would you check it out it's really beautiful almost looks a European graphic novel the mid and Osama it's got -- them. And I grabbed him for the story which is a very unique story because it deals with the touchy subject of Peter parker virginity right."
" And this this'll the hearts -- I sold this. To twenty years to get get dissolved for Thomas although they got a big laugh. And that he got this is presented it I said I want to do. We'll Peter parker Mary Jane doing that and -- I think at sick and I went out and live in an -- A couple on the and then and then slowly I said -- really guys. Either certain subjects. In in the ultimate lock in is it because -- but it wins. Real world view of the modern thing there's certain things about it that he can't ignore the fact that there's sexual tension. Our paranoia in in in the high school. You know place and it's part of life that's all they think of the -- I think about a minute bathroom forties -- so. Anyway so that they were very happy this coming out they would find -- took this and really turn into a spectacular."
" Thanks for us yeah. So I -- but another thing is I remember hearing that you've gotten ultimate -- scripts in the bank you know way out but then there's a big change coming that -- ultimatum thing which it from what I've heard is going to be fairly earth shattering."
" I'm not his banks as they used to be used to be banked up I was there won't pointing to divide sixteen issues. Two things -- is trying to. I was in this they're going to fire me events I never had a job more than nineteen issue so I was like I was end up getting like oh psychologist mother happy just our bacon and it's even of them like solvable comin' up for about a year whenever ports going to cancel certain piling -- on. Never once again invasion was a lot of work you're kind of took away from. The output of Spiderman but also because -- blow. I didn't want to write too much past them and they create this weird conflict when locked -- into things that he may not want to do. Well he may have thought something better in his third out that. I -- confused situation so I'm -- along with them and then -- ultimate ultimatum. Is -- island -- them."
" So can you are those like untold tales of ultimate Spiderman real you -- use that material were none and I got -- this thing to do I know we have -- pretty strong idea what the ultimate universal feel like post six ultimatum so I have I -- there. So so what is the ultimate universe like post ultimatum."
" Well -- this well. But ultimatum -- Our first big really big over arching ultimate event which really will impact every book in the lines. And coming out of that we're really going to see kind of of a brand new. Landscapes. -- brand new day but then maybe maybe you want to call -- that but you know -- the the core values of alternate universe will remain the strong. Creator driven stories by some of the top talent in the industry. Or the top talent in the industry. And and with you know a small close and it's universe with what strong emphasis on keeping -- that continuity that we all content to know and love and really. Taking -- to the next level. And really have a good time it."
" Well we certainly discovered over the years that that things have people. Seem to enjoy the most about alternate universe. These are things that are very different from the Providence like even. The -- went over so well ultimate Spiderman does that dynamic and and I was actually surprised at that I thought I was gonna get dumped on its people like Mary Jane so much that I you know. But we all in all the votes and ultimate X-Men in all to miss everything that's. Genuinely different it's within the -- in the like the most and I think what you're going to see if ultimatum it's a lot more that you're going to see just how all landscape. That is that the similarities between that -- going to completely different. Which I think will be very appealing to the tunnel but you know."
" It at the thought they -- guilty universalist presses and it's always you're always waiting for okay there'll demise in this character in -- in the storyline and I know that's been title suffered from that a lot I mean you had. Great writers on that you're so you -- on for a little while and it is never seem to take but Spiderman in and the ultimate seem to take we're took an endeavor direction."
" Well I mean from -- although the votes. I do poorly in particular ultimate X-Men did very very well all else equality. Now that this event in on this tonight is god trying to Avon and Robert -- Myanmar alarm o'clock in this doing while it's it's hard to argue back. You know that is someone's enjoying it. It's hard to fly to Bob franken bonds runs with a lot of fun. Withstood it and so. Exactly so -- guy this -- I will agree with you that the novelty. The all surmised version. You know rocky raccoon or whatever isn't as it. As appealing. As it would might have been a few years ago because we've kind of seen Milledge got a really unique take. Particularly like I haven't really done one in awhile and the one -- Syria who makes his debut. In. In ultimate annual look human food like you know favorite actors I got you I would like to see that like like you have to think about it and not just room randomly ultimate scared as bad. If the other character that's going to make it debut in the alternate universe. It should be the different than the than the one that's there you very much so. And they should it should hopefully be as intriguing as I hope it will be."
" Yeah -- me Evers has now been around for nationals but ten years I guess at this point and half and half and -- and he perfectly honest mama I -- when I started out just even reading comics as a -- one of the first books are picked out ones -- the book sold the next men. So I've been I've had it -- to a close -- to this universe basically from when I actually started reading comics which. I'm kind of data myself since that hasn't been that all that long. But what it really but it really -- this is that you it was getting. It had since fairly different for people like myself who hadn't been you know inundated with comics and hadn't been I -- off part of you know latest comics lore and history from you know way back when like this was. Like just is great jumping on point for people who hadn't been awash in all of that continuity just. Something that's that was that ring true with much like my generation something that was modern. And and it was easy to get access to and he didn't have to you can have to understand. You know what a -- was all they could pick this up and say well this isn't really awesome story. It's -- working in you know working in the the -- universe has really been kind of I guess you collar fan girl dreamed that really get sent. To participate in these in these wonderful stories and now what we're doing with ultimatum is there really were taking. Would -- busy taking everything with -- fire we're bringing it we're bringing it back to the bring it to. Revisiting that letter that original federation of greatness like I I think we've had some. Idealist fabulous runs and these wonderful stories great characters that have been introduced. But I think what we're trying to get back to was really that sense of like these -- the stories they're going to -- on your -- these stories they're really going to. Comic -- but. -- for years to come and that's really ultimatum is all about isn't really -- us back to that that intimate small world. But that's that has these rich stories that with the characters that actually. That. -- interact with one another like across bumps. You can read one book and be totally satisfied you can read all of them and say wow I see this hitting in this book and in this issue and it. And it's rolling through all these different stories and what's been really awesome is working with working with Brian working with mark working with Jeff. And then all these guys really want to work together and to create like this great hole. It's -- a whole."
" Universe that is the bogeys and just a couple books helps."
" It's a plan that would when he looked as you know I mean and vendors Soviet Union rank among universal's for capital that is just these four books that are just moving forward -- that helps us. And I edited moving along."
" It definitely does but as franken test like really going and give. -- ready ultimate origins and really -- trains and and like putting them at establishing that they history in the back story is -- me universe isn't. Just shocked fall like that the continuity is so rich even with just -- with that just the ten years of we have -- that the amount of information. Two to -- stick to keep a straight answer and two thanks for the we wrangling to order has been a monumental task and has been a lot of."
" Fun I was thinking about that two it is pretty events are writing about all of the writers. That birthday and Ludlow is well. All area. Just capable mythology. Students you know and we definitely definitely definitely build mythology. And then got three guys in the room that all of you that that's you know. It's super packet it's -- Does that --"
" That's it's it's been that it's been really it's been really fun journey and I'm really looking forward to to its ultimatum and to you know the bravest of the brave new world that we're creating method that -- again. Ultimatum the first and the first issue of double shipping in this November. And so we get ready for -- you know the 12 punch Jeff and David finch I'll become an on the pipeline. There's all sorts of craziness at nine down at those first two issues were literally -- I going to knock you on your ass and then back on your feet again and then maybe back on your ass."

" Do you know at that that we could just sick about the last couple years the ultimate powers. Schedule has been a nightmare just been terrible and they -- some personal issues that Mike was having that he discussed online and and there was some you know other professionals things are going on but we never meant to have a spiral out of control like it did -- we -- very dedicated to it. And I actually think thirties that the the best issue the book is that it was great it was really -- I think it's Mike's best issue as I was really. Happy about a house that they -- like to so much because I wrote us a long ago I don't remember writing it whatsoever let us -- those of -- So. But but just believe we sat -- as a we're gonna do we'll go dark on the main book them. Mike's -- again by six issues in the can. When we're ready to roll we're gonna debut with a new number one does it also if you read thirty. I it's it is the end of a volume."
" That was miles I felt I felt as if either ended it there. That would be and I wouldn't want to -- but that would be a good ending insulated at any point."
" That it definitely is -- of the major chapter in the book and when I read it all put together over the what does W and the the volume there's there's no question isn't so -- able doable. -- we'll go dark we'll get a budget issues in the camp and the will be launched next year which happens -- tenth anniversary. And I can't believe it either and we'll come out lovely like an almost album comes out answer in the meantime. We'll catch about it trades look at the -- that's out as well it got to where we'll behind them that we all the lives of the people asking -- to get out will come out. And then went on powers does come out even for people haven't read towers before they'll be able to dig in with the new number one in. And new case and really enjoy it giant mythology we've created. All the meanwhile. I would be working in the -- TV show that's coming out hopefully within this yeah. You know what channels have been on I do I it is the time -- they tell them on hold up to they have a big casting announcement all that I've got to tell you because LA. People maybe go tell overture girl in in -- and that -- money that's when I went yeah I do you hope they get people to pick up the book put out. It's a network that's a lot of swearing it's a network that allows the level of mature content that we've been doing. So. And we have a director attached and wound around arming the pilot. And --"
" So is that you know coming here you did fortune and glory almost ten years ago and as well which is -- United had a lot of experience of Hollywood is a kind of freaky actually get one. And it's something here it's close and it's happening."
" It is a couple things that are -- that's part of my do in the Harvey speech tonight -- speech as part of my speeches. How amazing it is at this seismic shifts. In how we're treated how they treat comic book creators in Hollywood and an attack all the talk about tonight's owner and -- The last -- I was at the Harvey awards Frank Miller was given the keynote speech. And he got up on stage and all he was Mandy was he took a wizard you lifted up -- there for this yeah that he got haven't staged took a wizard ripped in half threw it across the room. And said these guys where -- over these Hollywood compares the -- never just said like what he was still mad about but clearly some. Pissed them off this week tonight we've all been their realities some allied hands I don't know what it was. But he was a -- in a cut to just a few years later and he's a genuine Hollywood icon now he's literally like above the title talent you know area. And he's he's got you know its its -- and and newsman Mike mills -- can help blowing and just on my little level I remember when we first sold powers. There in the win column is -- to adapt to myself and -- this in though he gives lack straight to make it up to a -- thing they -- we we don't want you to do that we've had a lot of bad experience of people that you know work. Little did they know I hate myself so much I material they know that but the so I down. And then when. This happened years later and I and then now about to -- where I'm if I'm not selling in the comment write it because I don't. While -- bad script adaptations of -- market really. Usually nauseating really upsetting and I don't want to do that anymore this summit -- an -- that's fine I'll I'll be the one. And then when I assume mom and -- right. If you guys want to make party John miner the father of bush who I think they'll -- the question now on I'll leave it isn't that shift it like a seismic shift so it's yeah it's very interest in and -- it's been -- elevate any of the fortune I could telephone or to glory to. Full of more bad meetings stupid people Saddam things to me I I got some -- to major element saving for. I did I attack I don't want to put out another -- it just me doing more bad meetings this do you have won't going to be in the book on. Why do you keep going to let you gonna play the -- than the riddled with tread on me and but hopefully this is your -- man by the I'm I'm these experiences are having now with towers and torso looks like its closeness. Believe this won't get another -- July this new experiences that I can relate."
" Now the -- somewhat -- was that a sport is a force on the Internet guys and -- and the at the culture between the advance it traders complete its -- similar in in seamen back in the sixties people write in and they get letters but it's so much -- alive in the sixties I don't look for what I've read from what I seen but on it so much more hyper connected to the fans and -- one of the traders are leading now -- what -- Like you know what is what is your point -- in dealing with the fans in and giving them a place the common basically -- you'll that they. And studies look at your."
" Most ignore army which I it's it's an interest that's kind of where the board has gone where my existence on the board is. At distant fifth to everything else that's happening on the board and their relationships to each other but. What I have a lot about it and I've had abortions. You know literally since I could afford 15. And what it's grown into. As as my career has grown into something else. What is going to do something domestic product and that the fact that. And now went away when I was a kid I convention like this would be the only time he would meet anybody who it is similar interest is you. All right you read I read comics -- friends that love that I as the comics and they're happy for me in some of them lets me go on and on. On and on about frank -- run into whatever I was crazy about them but. There was happy for you now wherever you can read on -- my mind to thinking. But like minded thoughts that you can share and that's so special and the relationship I I've had marriages off my board and they really unique. Relationships. And all of between me and the guys on the board of some people who are genuinely like and trust. -- It to hold -- just it just I think just a lovely symptoms. The whole world's social dynamic in enemy that the -- of the world look at what have you. But it's still amazing. That and I think it has a lot to do -- being so -- over the last ten years. Is that you don't have to hide anymore you can do you can -- out of every one about there's ten people who agree with you anything you can think up. Anything any nerdy Diem thing you can think up. There's ten people have a website about it dedicated to the exact same thing that's amazing thing and I and I do I I often go on the boarding -- you know guys and as a kid at -- they have this is very you should take a moment I think about how cool this this. And don't scare off every woman that -- is more blood dumped a lot of glitz they've made by your hot wired up a -- woman's name is that you know so anyway. I tell -- I and I. And I think -- in my in my selfish reason. For having it is it's certainly. Allow is. It is certainly makes me -- fully aware that people are meeting. Wait you're very alone in -- room creating stuff it's very surreal -- even when they go to like the grocery store and I'll see when -- books on the shelf. It Italy then occurs to me that -- Actually I with Spiderman that's actually with a book that they solar cell. I well as a kid that's very weird and it I know it's bizarre. To say that out loud and some people get some people won't let it doesn't feel real until you see it printed. Even to this day. So when I go and my board is there and -- its existence keeps me from sucking my -- me my. My -- not wanting to side is accentuated by two things the fact that one name my kids will be this up and -- really thank them didn't think I was school WellPoint. But also -- knowing that I mean it's instantaneous. Then they -- right is a couple comes out the council is open in new mobile five there's a -- about it in light you have it in now. So knowing that's going to happen in knowing that I've created a situation for him not only me but all my friends. Can't run away from it you know they'll pretend out of me the Mets weren't they read everything -- Google in their name like its Olympic event and knowing that happens it does. Make you they don't -- this guy. You know cap -- that the news or -- it's going to let you (%expletive) have it so. You know the feedback dad don't suck you know. And so my final question is that is that that's got."
" now -- on us on is that really want to and are now. -- that is -- there was a fake. Yeah this is a knowing actually trying to read my dear friend. Created a fake Brian -- twitter account I was an even on to their side -- aware of that Dick Evans. Existence where he would -- that -- mean the spilling everywhere they're -- and Warren Ellis thought it was a mean -- mean that people were having conversations with me and it was Brian the whole time and as well nine. I found out to 67 months I -- not know this is happening. So first asked whether to cancel Brian reads entire account dietetic kick him off a -- that the only thing -- they could do in response is I know how much you love twitter and to have him gone twitter and and not be there for him Monday it would be great. But they wouldn't do it but time on twitter and now I'm not sure lemon twitter but up until there volatility just. Stop the madness yet in that. Nine days but come on nice days on well into my god."
