And in the woods of North Carolina, there were Heroes. So Ron, Josh, and Conor packed up, and headed to Charlotte for this year's Heroes Convention. And they talked to Remender, Fraction, Hickman, Powell and more. And they feasted. And there was a mustache, and it was pencil thin. And they rejoiced.

" Penalize them idealists it is meeting today Doug the most underrated -- in in the monthly universe. I'm him make an appearance that he has gone in yet samba boys arrested -- them out. -- Mythic is a place to rent dvds on nine did you go to www. netflix.com that's not -- you can register and find out how you can rent dvds component in an up and get to three weeks. That looks for me. All you can go to godaddy.com. And buy a domain names if you go to godaddy.com the musical uncle ambling you can buy your own domain name -- operate -- dot com to track record -- activities. So Riddick suddenly on notice that on him back on me -- let me -- it well. This little. Off the talented these cameras is just getting -- it was everyday. So. I need to leave and go steal some stuff of an icon ends because I live in and that's what I do and nobody gets me and look at my lovely it's -- both."
" It's a kind of get stuck in traffic this is the -- Then I get on the plane because he's on the planet in the seat next reopens against America and then recently for what now are. We'll move and they take us all the plane back in the terminal and give us another place elect a great -- hot get on the plane. He Texas is -- amazing and a new planes off. Like I don't honestly know answered no plans aren't even. We're gonna. -- Episode kind of thing here yeah."
" Hey we'll do another doesn't iFanboy we're here another convention. This timer Charlotte, North Carolina for -- comment and the crowds are somewhere we've been looking for them. If you wanted to come here now there's not much -- line you can get rating and nothing really not very pressured at all so that makes for sort of relaxed atmosphere which is which is -- good for fans and but -- the creators boat people has no problem getting up to cable's talking to people. It's different the different sort of drive reserve that we use that we used to sort of fight their way around and have a Noel ballroom in in these lines at Starbucks -- Evacuating so we're gonna we have a lot today and then maybe we'll talk to somebody who put the that the I'm here -- pal crater of the dune has got there pretty years ago did so bomb a lot of our audience loves to do Minnesota favorite books and it seems to really connect with the audience and possessive is that something that you. Originally want to a plan -- a kind of just like a happy accident. It's definitely an accident I didn't think anyone wanted this book or would morning I was completely duties for myself and I thought to got a loan -- self publish. You know the first stuff they're not. I thought for sure that it be mopping floors six months later at night so. I was very lucky this how how how long ago was that women Allen has taken to get to the point. We did three issues so this small press company and -- public -- that I guess that was around. 992001. Assert itself publishing. Times are restricted. Round 2002 I guess I don't know -- that's -- that. Again a little longer so but what's great is that you got from the doin' in that -- and work for a DC live on Superman. Yeah I'm still doing good stuff that supports them -- that again. Doing taken on a few other jobs here in there and really I I kind of point of focus on the game a lot more but. It was Pizarro -- Johnson Richard Donner and I can say noted hence so definite -- So -- at the switch gears from doing your own kind of critter round dunes kind of wacky stuff to -- a little more Tamer like Superman it's different it's -- you definitely active. Approach -- with a different mindset you know mom especially working with someone else's script Dijjer you're trying to convey their story. You know night yours around. And non. When you're giving -- material that makes the whole lot easier in those guys are you know they're pretty did as -- material Intel's that in the Soria I think Italian thing like I will tell you -- that I just got some of the colors back from my Dave Stewart and awesome. He's awesome as usual so I'm very pleased with the way it's looking. So finally one of the most recent books I read it was a scene sodomy deviant and odds on it like me where that come for a anger and bitterness. Frustration here pretty much to -- favorite. It. It got kind of blown out of proportion. Because I wanted to put the word sodomy on the title. And since it was being censored so much in being thrown in the don't catalog and everything I was like all right gloves are off. So so that changed your personal book in you -- it was it was originally supposed to be an issue of the June. But it. It wasn't that bad it was it was it was racier than the average issue but. It was no worse than your average episode of South Park or something like that. And it was -- a new window and kind of off panel stopped -- then you know if it's gonna get released and it don't catalog me back in everything why you. When I -- there's. Well I think he's still I was kind of like put in a situation where you know. -- kitty come out being released in the adult catalogue and everyone saying how bad it is I think it's come out the way I originally released it it would've. I would cost so much crap for that it was like oh yeah now this is so Racine and everything's gonna. I was kind of forced him today threatened to that they give them much Gloria. I definitely went over the top. Do you think -- getting this special cover in the in the -- on health sales -- healthy -- it I had it didn't hurt -- you know. It's -- more ventures of those inside the muted in Omaha and I don't know. What to wait and see if it's a."
" Also constant almost any -- gets who's going to be the -- table this stuff for people to grab and it seems like no matter what it is people are always going to. -- anything it's in their hands but here's some of the highlights we get okay. We've got delivered -- when he coming up. With the literary guest of honor to has yet to be announced. There's a good Vincent defeat Greg Matt Roth. Activities on I know him and activities on and I don't know last. This is good this is give blood that's that's that's good that they do as good. The Levine museum of the new south has -- revealing look at southern stereotypes in comics. So there's that Casey. Of course this one but how to have good bowel -- this is a nine item list of different things he can do number -- you feel the -- have a bowel movement try to find a toilet did not suppress the -- unless it's absolutely necessary. And that's that's good advice for almost anyone. Where Scotty young artists of the new X-Men yes and and and now Internet podcasting celebrity. Yeah I'm a superstar. There's -- so would you start showing up around comics and then and then they didn't want to lead."
" Again I thought. I thought I could probably take over the whole show pretty about a month the price is -- now and I looked like really think gets. You know I spent a lot of time in studio all week by myself in you know they invited me over once and instead now U know Norton and I decide to go hang out again and then they had me on there and and one week that is what to hang out and didn't even intend to be on the show and like sit down and yeah and it is like all of sudden part of the show you know so I think you'd like good feedback and I get a lot of good emails from and everything so. It's really just something to do on a Friday night hang out with some other guys after -- a lot you know long week of work. He caught the bug me some of the -- bandwagon guy doesn't it doesn't want -- well it's just get on there I like to run my mouth as well so that never hurts to ask give you the guy who who who who draws comics but doesn't read comics and I don't believe that. That's that's the thing is ever in it and there's -- and emails about that single. We were -- comics and in. It's not that I don't read comics is that I haven't read a lot of comments -- comic book nerd as much as anybody else's. I just there was a big period of time right missed a lot of books. When you're working in the history sometimes you just forget and sometimes the magic is gone a little bit you know the wizard behind the concede. The behind the scenes stuff so. Sometimes -- it burst your bubble little bit but. I think now it's good for me because I didn't read a whole lot of stuff for a lot of years I have a lot of stuff to catch up on just started preacher. Yet just not a preacher I'm like seven trades and on why that I read back to back so. I actually feel like I get the better end of the stick by not had not having read it. Everything single a surprisingly -- so now I have all these huge stacks of great stories that a marine group that of course everybody else are you know this is good. But yes I read comics just as much as anybody else -- into comics as -- royals just because I haven't read. You know every (%expletive) thing. Let me ask you here on an excellent book and -- and it's a do you have to. He's eaten yet it's not time doing research in trying to figure out who need for democracy is such a deep universe right so -- references and things like that I think with the new X-Men being that it's you know it's one of the younger books hasn't been around as long as some of the other ones come. And -- is a fairly new there was in his a deep history that I had to go back and look at but really what I did was I just spent before I start to Syria that it's been a lot of time on the phone with Chris -- the writer. One of the writers and and really just kind of drilled him about. Because sometimes you don't know all a lot of the back storage from a lot of characters just by reading the comics I want to know what the writers actually thought about while creating a character or. And sometimes they give you a lot more insight that you can get out of a couple panels there are of comics so. I spent a lot of time on the phone with him just asking about all the super nerdy stuff like. Where is this kid from originally and who is -- on all the kind of background stuff that I think needs to go into designing a care -- going to care to look a certain -- here. So I did research like that but. I try to sale I tried my best to not get too involved in what's come before. Because sometimes you have a tendency to just try to redo that and I try my best to see what I can I can bring new to the table little better. There is if you're injured that you're going to script needed us and it on the characters in the guys on around you like call somebody marveled the go to Wikipedia present just faster. By Wikipedia here and not create good over it definitely it's pretty insane I don't know. Who in the hell started that a coup and keeps it up but as soon -- I was on new X-Men. Literally you could go to Wikipedia and that my drawings of the new X-Men -- that current drawings and I was like. Do these things you know I don't even know that much yet in there already and you know -- they know more about me than I do I think over Wikipedia itself. I can -- get Chris on the phone at any point any of any that they were elegant world there's -- the house there's a lot of artists here right -- his good shepherd and Sosa as the work you guys did -- what makes this worth it because. I mean it you know -- I bring my sketch books and -- that's always good and then. You do a lot of commissions here because it's kind of known as an art and artists show. The guest list of artists here is amazing and yet Andy Robinson. At a news and I mean everybody from. This -- books you like to the biggest of big books -- at marvel and DC are here. So I think a lot of a lot of fans come to this convention. You know they role in early and they're trying to get on and you -- a lot of a lot of hit a lot of creators dukes gets his little constant just. A lot of us do full commissions which is basically you know. Full -- finished pieces for people and we'll get in here. You know the show started at eleven by 1115. I had you know twelve people on a commission list of -- that you didn't -- take this home and then -- those pieces and then after the don't know why hopefully pay you for them -- know -- actually do we do here at the show and so you try to do like I try to do as many as I can. Here at the show. Some -- yet I don't take the money up front because. I don't want to be feel like I have to feel like I took twelve means I might do twelve I might do -- and then you know I don't care because I don't have the money yet right. I used to make the mistake taken money up front and and I would do have to commissions and then I would didn't want to give the money back because you coming yet you know he got. Allah to grant in your -- you don't get some of that back. You know why would you want to do that. -- some idea how do you decide you like the one you wanted to -- yeah I do the I don't really because people come I think on Fridays and Saturdays and you know and I try not to go just down the list and order because I feel like if you came on Saturday. He had to work on Friday or whatever I feel I don't. I don't feel like it's fair just to do the people who got here first thing on Friday so I kind of just jump around to the ones that. Might be easier on my have a little bit more fun doing artists and have you have you ever gotten a commission -- drawn -- Oh sure I make sure right up front that I do that. I used to just do anything that -- know as younger and hungrier and -- let you let certain you know. And now like now clock that let's let's go let's get our speaking cap on man you know like. But yeah I tried my best to stay away from the ones I don't think the ability do the job behind in -- Keep it to the ones that you get it's like can't do a good job -- so. And sometimes that proposal to so yeah it goes it goes both ways you know we'll bring in different."
" I mean they're actually thank."
" The news media and we are not daily podcast or hasn't really hot button here on Charlotte the Carolina sponsored behind you confidently and that people here -- It."
" We are here with Laura Martin and and I I think it's safe to say -- the -- colors -- comics today I -- okay. I LA and you know I'm I'm lucky to be among the top -- but yes. There are a lot of -- I consider better than I -- Are better. What I do all right we're going when you like open up a comic book for the first time -- that the first thing you look at how absolutely I have -- for science and is coming and they're doing minute. There's so many different coaches out there right now with a different colors and styles and and hard work that I really want to check out of the callers is 81. Definitely. I mean he compared now compared to ten years ago coloring comic books become much more important than he used to be. -- what did you must start with -- around before I actually went straight to digital. -- where -- started -- allows Germany had a digital department there so that's that's where -- seventies yet how many -- you do you like any given month."
" I -- I have been can do 24 but that's a rough month alone usually like to keep at the turn two to three reminds. Mostly disinterested because a lot of it doesn't so much have to do this the way I work as as. The deadlines have been given him in other words. Even -- I would be working on one -- say for instance I'm and I get that look until the very end the deadline and I have to get it don't leak incident I'm sitting around for three weeks -- doing anything summit to take extra work I think that's the case of a lot of colors is that you know they they just have opens timing of scheduled. Because of the nature of the schedule of comics you know whether the pages gets delayed or whatever the cases we just. Have the ability to get things we have to learn how to do things faster so we have to -- to come home work. But yeah I'm I'm usually doing. In any given month and none of my stuff is. It's technically one -- but it doesn't necessarily appear mentally so you know on any time any given time month I'm usually working on two to three vote for months. Are you service like you you kind of -- the mercy of over the artists thinkers do -- yes exactly and even the writers to some extent so yeah a lot of times not all the time I do get some books that are that are pretty well on schedule but there are times -- yes it'll it'll be down to the -- still receiving -- two days before the book has to get depressed though. And happens you know I am used to it do you find -- like if you get Brian each page you haven't seen one for six months and and -- saying get it done in the days that. That's tough you know because you kind of have to warm up to it again you know I have to actually go back and look at -- and say okay that's that's what it likes you know. You find certain writers we'll give you directions or or or does today like you do your own thing or. It depends on the on the writer and the artist I mean like for instance on them. I just did a book called and a chrome lamps for human rights and the writer actually put in a great deal of information because the story was so dependent on the on the coloring. I was actually painting like recreating Sandoz and and different types -- to pretense of classic artist so I needed that they needed to know what she was had in mind. At this is out to camping you wrote it Scioscia should put an awful lot of notes from -- for me specifically. But like Warren Ellis will leave things alone for me to give me basic directions like daytime nighttime whatever. I'll usually consult with the artist of with the chancellor and NC what he's got a mind when he lead dissipated I can't figure it out right off the bat. Don't call up and say hey you know is there something specific you want this patent legislation walking through it I -- you got you've got colored pencils that did you artwork outside of outside of the comic stuff very rarely I'd really like to do more so I just to make it just took the commission for the first time in like ever and -- they think that's all right -- suggested that was a commission pursuant to the show. A -- you -- as yet you kind of thing. He's good at that I think god that so get out of rarely do our work outside but I would really like to start doing more of itself. And I'm trying to. Get -- little breaks my schedule so I can start doing stuff like that like you've got to also appeared even working. During that yes I've actually I've brought my laptop and my second monitors that people could see that I'm working on actually couldn't work on and on Friday as somebody forgot the power -- But yeah I mean this is an interesting I am working because I can work to talk to people and still had a deadline you know I'm not I'm not sitting it's -- my -- just chemicals. Hello thank you very much appreciate it thank you."
" So we've we've got to talk to you that we can have he's he's he's -- it's. Season. It's having a -- at everything he's drunk it's a sentence for --"
" The attention it. Router from underwriter of strange girl and fear agent a lot of the other projects accomplishments to the first -- of the you don't adjust the beauty of this this whole different genres that you've covered here it's actually partially due to use do you think enough time for scifi story do you --"
" Yeah and I think that like you know John -- is like I think a good story is a good story -- no matter of the trappings of a John running you know it's it's mostly static stuff. And -- it also keeps things interesting you know it's it's nice to not just been doing one thing and I get they get a kick out of doing funds that buy stuff from that I get a kick and a day of horror movie you know doing your favorite. I like writing them off for different reasons you know I think you're agent gets gets me that's like ten years old played at my toys and in you know the backyard. It's just it's just writes itself it's just as good you know it's good fun. Strange girl I get a chance to sort of get my head of my ass and get you know somewhat theological and hopefully giving people you know I -- that's to -- The generated the middle on but I still get to have some sort of there's there's subtext development essential felt very personal wasn't gonna. Yeah it's it's the more personal all the books I've done it's it's but again like I said it's it's difficult to write a line we -- doing with anything that has religion involved. And to just sit in the middle and without that you know hearing the writers this is what I think this is what I think there's I think and -- tried -- play both sides and make sure that it was you know even -- the reaction did you get a lot of angry. -- support of the -- an -- and it's one of these -- in big cities you know it it does better -- in the middle America and things it's -- in Canada and England in the -- in New York and San Francisco. And you know that's cool. People have my preconceived notion of what it is -- them because I think that if anybody well you know. I -- think that everybody will assume that it's just this ultra left sort of making fun of me -- the rapture when in fact. But my point of you would it really was was the rapture as its mark in the modern idea of it was such a fascinating concept but what apparently happened to. You know what if by not accepting Jesus as your savior you're here and hell broke open in the demons came and then there's anti Christ ever trying to trick -- all the super. It's kind of local setup where comical figure almost that's almost actually -- and you know you from the charities that I can I constructed you know that the road trip to trying to get way to to have been. And then from there -- just checking out the world on the way the com. This this and when the comics convention as -- artist story to the -- more artists and writers who do you feel like the odd man out in terms of if you look at just fell you've got on the but compared with attributed -- I actually pencil there are teaming agreement Campbell. And I penciled the last Christmas at Bryant puts an injured Doug and last year. Brian Davis from their social movement of the shows up view. To view -- it's hearts and you mr. you can move for a man you. Lot of lot of writers and artists to start writing and it's -- by the -- here he got a little thing as an artist for twelve years we're going to feature film animation and video game store it bullets and stuff and it's nice little break you know it's nice on the -- and it's nice to be able to change gears and just work creatively unknown storytelling. But -- and I still I still -- amendment before the sketch book him via yeah. You find yourself from thinking coming. This is since you like -- an artist breakdowns that you do the juvenile cancer insurance -- you know as an artist myself I didn't really nobody likes to have been handled. So I usually I work with guys that are good enough that when the stuff comes back and run and usually 99 point 9% you -- ecstatic about what comes. There's not really -- reason to assume. Appeared to just -- publishers from. Is that a move and your partners that something it's time to move on to another company -- of them agenda of course there's so you know in the next couple months it'll become apparent to realize that -- and you know we have the beloved bird provisional wouldn't exist and into of course a great home as well they're both good companies and it was something that on. Sort of behind the scenes business decision at this point you know but you know we've we've we've looked both companies a lot of -- don't expect to strip. And."
" Yeah no it's not. Everybody wants to break him down. -- A lot younger -- I don't think so because I."
" Also the."
" Yeah and pretend. In Vietnam for. It's. Okay."
" I'm here with -- John -- creator of the nightly news I see creator you really you did every bit of it. Did I good -- and drew it colored it lettered it. It's -- me the do you find that. Mike did that work out better for you than have an a hole which team did its -- just this sense of I can you open my father well it's one of those things."
" Where when you're starting -- comics and like I mean if you're like me you've waited as long as you have to do it and he can be a bit of a control freak. You know and I am and on the design sense in the writing all that. It is very important to me and I just wanted to do it all myself. And oh and it's so much store in my way and yes that I kind of was dictated -- dictated that I was gonna."
" Do everything so that the focus is is kinda heavy stuff remaking lot of comments in the media and then and now this terrorism extremes -- your way."
" How that -- and come together."
" watching reservoir dogs and now. Look through the TV and there's a debate on and I knew that the news and reservoir dogs it was a perfect marriage Tim. It's. Kind of it's a revenge story it's you know thriller but it's it's smart. -- on the define -- you get to get like sort of the feelings that a media -- as the stuff coming clears your writing -- Yeah nightly news this is. It's not there before me. I mean I believe in the story and you know love the story I think it's I think it's you know a good story. But I don't get into. What is true what isn't true it is kind of floods I don't really get in that I like to leave all that to the reader. You know I don't like to. I'd give people answers only to ask questions and that's that's kind of how the nightly news is now I heard you -- that -- the attorney gets a mainstream work pretty heated and for marvel at that little legion of monster's story from marvel and other talking to me that it's in some stuff. You know marvelous -- plutonium. -- Is is -- that the kind is that mechanical you have it you have other other -- creator of projects -- not gonna -- for the -- coming -- next year Afghan. Get -- on starts in October it's historical science fiction. I've got. A red -- from Mars -- I am only writing for a guy named Ryan that in time that's kind of big superhero kind of post apocalyptic blade runner and the story. And then under item documentary. Kind of story -- and human in March. You I -- it sounds to me like you want to do that kind of looks a sort of break the boundaries of what sort of normally begun selling them documentaries not on the kind of thing it's done in economy looks is that something you think about your Michael on this John hasn't been tapped or. Bombed policy is more I don't want to do boring work. I don't want to be personally board I don't I don't want to produce something that isn't. Police would interest me as a reader and on the and I like a lot of different stuff and aside I don't feel like -- to be tied to. He went type of book or even visually when style art -- you know I'm I'm -- mix up the line says tax them honest it does it take place in like that that promenade. It's. It's about a story where. The Pope sends a private army back in time to take over the world -- 313 Constantine first Christian emperor of Rome. The Roman empire and on everything is wrong. So that's that's kind of the story to story about a the long view of humanity -- that the background as the action stuff the real stories about. What it would take for us to become a better species. And it's kind of and it's just like -- like affair. God -- design easier reading. That's a material was the kind of thing do you know a lot about energy just dive into a lot of research on I have. It's generally ideas for books come to me. Pretty completed you know kind of seed the beginning middle and into the stories and when it's -- on the way the stories become real when they get fleshed out this. All the resource that did you know after I know I kind of we're out when again within the research comes and in a dual -- grows from there."
" I would like very much appreciate it and examine the port of tax on that sounds cool. I don't know why the very kids in the most popular hours North Carolina. And anybody's opinion here battle lines three days straight black chairs. We determine I don't think even has cookies so I don't know what it is."
" We can't get there doctor. Around here with a writer Matt fraction has young man. -- But let's look so I'm sitting here with Casanova hardcover. That's gotten little. Tea has got a lot of -- view what people really dig in and -- those little different than what this kind of out there from from from the other turns on the other comics what is -- your approaches that are what is it what are you trying to accomplishment just another well it's it's not a superior book and it's not owned by a corporation so that's the first and foremost. At this science fiction super spy kind of -- if you like James Bond and you know Angel dust this to the tree the excellent. So bomb secretly I'm really courting the PCP audience that up really has -- Awesome bit -- smashing my car windows but it's cool whatever. And so -- the the got a big book coming out from -- on that was even apple now has gotten a title finally yes the order and so on the -- the champion champions are dead to me that that -- today stylistic change the name change -- the --"
" It was news."
" This desert Dick bags it's just a hassle as it a bomber like I would much rather be thinking about the book and having to deal at this retarded crap that. Palm I'm glad it's over and visited the look at all the book is still the book in the characters and the characters and it's not like. There's -- what seventeen issues the champions in 1974 but tonight there's a proud tradition of there were not able to whatever its its line and this time. In embarrassed were -- positive as long as it did -- results but -- the work is gorgeous and bomb and I'm glad it's cool they get people talking about the book which is nice but it much of the talk about how amazing very kits and mark paralysis. I -- he had -- on yesterday it's indicative of the longest line up his pitches and raise a raisin cookies and as Booth and what they'll do it every time cookies I -- to -- to -- a case -- moon -- and -- languages is like I'm British and -- the -- and so they're very -- and does not keep it -- doesn't. But the art is beautiful and mark -- is amazing we're -- them -- a team to be reckoned with. Today it's it's got it's got an interesting approach to the book on it tells about what you know the the previews tennis channel and copy."
" Yet the the idea is that it's it's it's it's a superior team with -- it it's made up of actual real life heroes are given a chance to save the world any year. On the program as competitive entry given it continuance so that that degree of performance expected to maintain -- distraught over the they blow it they get fired it's like a baseball team if you get injured they're not going to stop playing the game is another shortstop -- take your legs aren't right -- as -- to -- an injured whatever. So it's and it's it's part of a fifty state initiative and they're defending Californians so it's. I know it's me doing as straightforward as you bring your book as I can what these mean so it's not very straightforward and all but it's.
" We can't get there doctor. Around here with a writer Matt fraction has young man. -- But let's look so I'm sitting here with Casanova hardcover. That's gotten little. " It was news."
" This desert Dick bags it's just a hassle as it a bomber like I would much rather be thinking about the book and having to deal at this retarded crap that.
