Classic Marvel Vault

Saturday, May 10th, 2008 – running time 27:25
What do the Infinity Gauntlet, The Kree-Skrull War, and Elektra: Assassin have in common? They're classics!

Josh, Ron, and Conor are back to the Vault, but with a twist! This week, it's all about those famous and classic stories that make up the keystones of the Marvel Universe.

Before Secret Invasion, there was the Kree-Skrull War. Does this story from 1972 hold up? Is it related to the current drama happening at Marvel? Ron's read it, and he'll let you know.

Conor had to borrow a copy of Elektra: Assassin to take part in the show, and it certainly gave him something to think about. Is the combination of Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz genius or madness? Perhaps it's a bit of both.

Finally, a glove of powerful gems will rule them all, and the Marvel Universe had better stop Thanos before he really messes things up. Did Jim Starlin tell a story for the ages, or is it best to leave The Infinity Gauntlet in 1991?

So true believers, step into the Vault with iFanboy, and check out these essential Marvel yarns.

" Yeah good but it didn't think just flipping through this you see. -- there's everybody there."

" It's clear that Bassett Bassett -- and that's what's kind of agency that this kind of happen by mistake because the story starts off it's it's that the -- pro war starts off with a as a captain marvel story. In what NBC what happens is that captain marvel has been outed as an alien and there's a public outcry. Two haven't turned in in this this kind of bomb a senators leading a witch hunt. Which is very similar area and I'm calling and what's really funny is that what -- people picketing but his mansion with sciences of managers disassembled. Which it's like yeah. -- was is it's really fascinating and so what happens is that the adventure is help captain marvel they protective and actually in the Carol Denver's who beat later becomes ms. marvel. And she takes them up to a farm upstate where she knows friend who owns a farm to kind of hide from the public -- people -- But so that so at the time the adventures were made up of quicksilver scarlet witch vision. And Goliath who is Clint Barton who's taking and pins growth serum to going to die. Yet if there -- Barton Fannie and an ISO. We -- look at Goliath with the stupidest cost Japan like a red thing here and -- bare chested all the time. But because your swarthy yeah that. He put up their ups and -- at one point at one point they go run in the Q there comes and he -- and I kept the marvels like he's Crea his -- guy Clint Barton hawk. You're not. Ho -- and so wrote in the accuser comes from her for hunting for captain marvel has happened marvelous -- warrior who chooses to live on earth that's an earth and protect earth. He's given up is prepared agents -- run in the accusers like a a judge jury and executioner at a guy comes on down there just aren't yet how many did you attend. And it is one point where rodents traded -- a jungle in the in the Arctic circle not to savage land that you see the beginnings of the sadly you know similar sentiment. But. And client is there it is like how it's hot here even for me. -- I really weird but but so those are the images they helped captain marvel and then then what happens is that that kind of crisis itself and then. Then for captain America iron -- show up and -- Fire the inventors and they did they'd they break -- the team because it feels that they had nation and captain marvel over the authorities. Select a lot of weird stuff is happening at the same time you an undercurrent of the vision scarlet witch romance starts in this story. Division by the way is like. Bad -- powerful it's like every time they're in a fight always off we have -- it was more so than that they're like fighting something and -- like I dare not use my power it's a last resort and then he and then because they're trying to Goliath and sixes this in the last chance than than solidifies. And killed it yet so this all the first couple of issues and so then what happens is that than it reveals that the scrolls are coming and so and we get we get pulled and by Rick Jones and captain marvel at his whole scroll -- kind of conflict somehow becomes. It need a battleground is the Indians. The scrolls are going after the unions agree to create decree. Two Maximus has. Maxim has made a -- With want to decrees and -- rather -- smoking. -- yet. And so so maxis makes a deal to decree to betrayed black -- hand in humans over the decree somehow the scrolls get involved. And so they they take care of that situation and then they get on a spaceship and nick fury helps them -- ship. And Vega and the whole time like -- theories like helping the -- but he's like working for the government. So he's like United and I didn't see you -- didn't take off that ship before I see you in and they go and they go and there's a whole big battle with the Koreans girl and and it kind of helps hold it hold off the war. But Jones this is something Rick Jones and decrease supreme intelligence. And basically it ends with the crew what scroll war kind of being dissipated. Captain marvel ends up being something the negative zones and switching places Rick Rick Jones lets -- tomorrow for the future. And then it's that's a -- scroll kind of kind of conflict and then when they get back to earth to find that the senator who's leading the witch hunt it was April yes. But what's also interesting was that the on the farm that Carol Denver's brings up to -- the marbles the same farm where the the scrolls that first appeared fantastic four early in series that reed Richards hypnotize the cows. We're living on that farm cover yeah. -- is three cows that got me down yes. Which is we -- so yet so that so we get a call back to all fantastic four story. Lot of stuff going on -- So all that. So it's the scroll between Florida should should people go back and read absolutely. Actually reason didn't lead to -- what's happening now it provides. It will provide -- context if you read if you read if you picked up that three -- secret invasion kind of prologue recapping that that was accountable -- a couple months ago weeks ago. You know a moderate approach to this kind of storytelling you can see you can see the connections to what's going on now. On the big history buff so like knowing what came before me is important thing so like this -- can't recommend enough -- yeah. It was fun doing it mission we'd like. Exactly. " We know the invasion here. It's been here before. And I'm pretty sure Josh is scroll. Did you notice that he didn't have a beard. Any happier. Okay think about it just think about it. " for an. Olives go what's going in the opposite direction. We'll go travel to the years of the severe as six -- late sixties we're going to the show but I realize -- had any problem men's collection for. Animation yeah I -- I have -- but their whole way so I wanted to just house he had a budget was picked one out I picked -- Elektra assassin. -- This is 1985 he's 86 actually -- five Frank Miller bill sick damages. Eight issue miniseries about lecture held at the -- marvels. Sort of the sort of like -- com it would."

" There it was weird it was kind of create her own but not kind of out of continuity -- Condit he's been happening awfully slick for profanity effect yet knows more mature yeah like to have a wolverine miniseries is on the."

" Have lots of I was I was surprised how. Adult this -- ministers will but. I asked but as far as you can get away from the preschool sort of traditional super -- was yes. -- assassin was after she died was killed daredevil. He wanted to write more more knowledge that he on the marvel -- And this this was designed to be it could be after she died or could be before she -- Beverly said. And undivided attention receive you don't -- shadows ready to begin to sort of washed up beach she could have been. You know they're not dead but bulls or before you have really though it's us. Re strange. Ha ha ha -- It's it's it's it's a portrait of madness I think. Interestingly as housing and -- dance. Electric is is not even really the main character in the book burning churches as a shield agent and Garrett who. Is a site abort but there's also traced if that happens stories about. This cyborg -- shields hesitant recently -- people didn't like it Buffy -- systems and there are like try to get government funding mixtures of there's a lot of anger in this book and it's hot it's -- its threats of not initials are described. Literally but. There's a beast that is that collectors try to killed pieces habit of presidential candidate in the super liberal like Kennedy style guy. And he's going to win the election as the president is kind of an evil Nixon tightened. And the beast is always smiling big smiley face is white that is deep color. And so they tried to kill him. But I Olympics the Garrett was -- to keep up electorate aren't robe and they're trying to kill us they don't know that the beast of and it's it's and it's not. A year and it's very -- you just -- what do reading at about half -- a really figured out what was going on and who everybody was with the release of wasn't -- captions I was reading and what it meant. And once I figured that it was more enjoyable by the end it really was until the first -- it's really rough."

" It's a mean it. It's it's one of frank Miller's -- and ended actually in and bills and edits the art is undeniably -- it is it is built a chemist at its peak -- like it's just beautifully beautifully done. And I was and our compliments the madness of the Soria really well. And -- comics. Now look like that's right I think it makes you can we hear now kind he's seen. -- states. You know like and you just did not see this and he changed his style depending on what what seems the world. This is 86 was the senior Starker terms of discipline frank Miller Light golden entity has its."

" Underscored because of that -- dark days of actual exercise and I think one of the wanted the biggest things about that is that is the character of electric -- and where you are you know like while you know we voice acting like characters fight that. In marble and then things that they they weren't always. Powerful bad -- like we didn't get that bad girls. Thing that we got the ninety's where you know and a -- really. Brought up brought an attitude that swagger as character to a female character that wasn't present at that time."

" Out of like a little more of her. Because there really is she should work force of nature of the spokesman character like Garrett is really -- have a that would follow she has taken control its mind. Which is little strange and like directs his actions of some support he just doesn't make. At a every aspect of the book going until just she do that like I don't know and then."

" so but that's a deciding he said doesn't mean. I mean at at the end of the book and he did it make sense and wasn't enjoyable."

" Yes definitely the end of the book if it makes more sense that -- it's very hard to get. I was expecting more of a traditional because it was a it was around a time of which was right there levels as to what is traditional dinner cigars or it fairly traditional I normally. Thinking this is good but it matters for the first couple of chapters of debate chapter trades are expected. I was like I don't know what's happened. I don't understand and it's a bit broader middle its clicks at a place capsules after it's very strange but I understand it like -- Second especially a lot of fun. One of its shields skyboxes serial killer by accident that's that's careers circular shield the day from -- where the circles everybody thought there's none sealed agent just like on -- which means it's kind of like. I like frank -- angry very angry. You know he he's very clearly hates both political parties both and both candidates are awful and is similar themes in darkness to and very married politically charged a lot of stuff with religion and and it's very. It's very provocative I can imagine this commitment -- six I wouldn't never -- out of service as a -- world. But problems yes. Nick serious chemistry but -- had marked an advocate did you get no reverence for anybody this book there's a for a luxury than more things change yes it's. If you're a big fan of -- corporate -- sort of out there out there wacky stuff but that's not disappointment and it but it's very dark very. It's not traditional competitive that you like this into the scenes seem tenants are alone justice but it it just a piece you can distort look at it it was beautifully -- that. On movies it's. --"

" It's right. There quote we've increased -- period. Around me that I'm real real I just I don't know what to do practice. I'm gonna go to Netflix. On the Internet protect comes fashion import because targeted two week free trial. -- 90000. Titles to choose from they have no way -- used to delivery -- it's awesome. And I don't know what's going to cure me of this -- invasion scroll problem but. I'm just gonna go with that."

" You should -- I guess on top URI. And we had issues straight at issue is back."

" Panama. -- the Iraqi -- 1991. Marvel Comics -- starlet. George Perez art at the beginning. And that wrongly immunity act. Now I thought these issues around -- but it started reading comics in 978. You see oh. Convention some. But it often like a pack. And that beneath faxes that have risen then it was kind of fun probably."

" Like likeness of a news story I like those kind of stories and so this is something about life and that's a big deal and about it mr. -- on the now for little contact you guys actually tell me about what it was like -- yet lucid."

" Senegal's huge deal -- anyone that was first -- sort of going to the store every week in undergoing a few weeks -- This was for five years -- though. It six years after president and -- this is George president's first big deal. Every character in the marvel project like this is a big deal when it happened previous president just on the project -- yet he was going to draw everybody. And it is big format similar you know six issue big sprawling Scott X -- This was a humongous deal was for the Internet before you -- is the wizard promoting it this is from noticeable through word of mouth you know your column through -- that is to that sort of thing it was -- This 250 yes."

" Flew 91. Long those that was probably a couple -- fifty yes. -- and artistically when this came out distinct -- seeing on the shelf -- deal like. It's like stunned into silent except shaking on the way to the register stuff and that's outside analysts read it. And being blown away by the first couple issues of men. Who look back."

" Leo that's as it was meant what I love about this the about this about this common in this covers and is that when you've got covers where they're showing basically every character. In the marvel universe either you know like this is the images mentioned they're just that of other vendors always kept tabs on every -- out there -- do that as much anymore but it does have these screens just these head shots and like for someone was like injures -- and I was getting. And then and then you know pretty much it was a call to arms for every. Heroic character. -- well we --"

" We'll have a lot line Angela you -- plot of land for you on what you told me. About my my exposed opinion on this said. I hope we're really -- really worried that you communities that it couldn't we -- on camera and it released and then we've got to resolve. So let -- be justified to you to love yes you have to grab the scissors in Europe Africa the -- of I had so much fun reading. Hey it was great. -- event starts up apparent heart is so as heinous act as. This is so much just thought we talk about a dead beat them at the height this is this -- right now are yet -- alone you have ought to look at. It is just so still. Hokey and it's it's it's coming out of a certain age of -- Commit but not so much you. It's just font instead it will sell classic feeling so -- so what is that what's that -- pitch."

" For an -- isn't it turned out eternal. Alone -- Yes yes tighten. I'll start -- from from. Jupiter Jupiter he's tighten. And apparently. The and he is questioning. To get infinity gauntlet which the club all of -- six. It is time Seoul. -- Al it'd be yet victory -- to get that glove is all powerful -- the most powerful. NYC do us. 'cause he wants yet. He's trying to -- death. Yes which it's that sort of -- things like a whole lot and it's like every is what."

" Fill -- and in comparison I. What -- software he uses the -- is -- to make half everybody happy people in the world just a greater threat to kill enough people on hand and basically."

" At a warlock. Shows up and the character who has some history spot. It right. Again he's the real seventy -- It. Back -- and strange like you have to listen and we have to fix this yeah seem strange by the way not. Good year for his moustache to go off some mafia has got to do it it's all of its its its its more the -- that basically. Everybody gets recruited to -- fight and it turns out that that bombed the adventures on the -- people are kind of -- because that he goes against the big guns the cosmic marble. These celestial. Not eternity."

" Yet that did that the basis of its -- what we get is yet phases as. They -- is -- discovered asteroid with -- altered death and grace -- exactly off and it's just wave of like Earth's heroes and and then they fail and then and then the at the United Charles -- to cosmic beings chaos in debt and judgment destiny all -- and by the way at this time period -- this is why this is up for an -- did -- this time period. At the same time 1991 I'm reading this on buying the official -- tomorrow the universe like it's like it's cocaine I'm buying this trading cards like vehicle and I'm just devouring this idea of what. I don't I'm thirteen 12 or thirteen -- Kansas character and destiny Atlanta -- and looking as communism looking at and it just it was a major it was is grass there hey. The -- halt and that's our fault yeah at a point yet there is is."

" That that's -- A strike. News.
