" Yeah a long time ago I first went to San Diego comic con some of the Los Angeles and drove down there 2000 like walking out of that. Really cemented my love for this for -- media -- like really big being there version in that. Group of and it was before it was like completely nuts but I was still blown away. And and I've never lost that feeling from that time that really pushed me over the edge of man what a great. You know sort of thing to be to be into out of."

" But when you get to -- like that yeah exactly in any good cops on Wednesday maybe half an hour to even hundreds of books but people do that alone. Right -- they don't Frederick Cosby go to interventionist everywhere that. " Well except for the flu broke whatever -- so that we get a lot of questions though for people who haven't done con since and they -- know what is it like when I used it to my hat I -- one this is probably the most important first question yet. Which -- go to there are a lot of conventions now they're more than when we started when. You can -- all announcement. It community is home. All we're not all that you do not. As Atlanta -- was -- Chicago who the new eats to seek to. In Chicago would windy city Chicago. As emerald city mid Ohio con in Ohio voters city -- city -- Kansas City -- Saint Louis is now. Yeah there was always a little of that yet but yeah it's have Iranians. In Seattle wonder -- the one economy in San Francisco. And San Diego sent -- send -- accent as say yeah or super common it was an LA it was an ally in the right. Today a lot of event and it isn't even that is even smaller -- If -- this one of the main options one and called the pecan writers there appears there every year. He does and I don't I'll bet if it so. That's gonna question sort of what what is that you're looking forward to -- if you want to you mean city doesn't like an obvious answer but it is. San Diego is like going to Disney World for a week it's like -- destination it's yeah it's it's everything that the music part you have a home times ten. Magnifying so -- so you -- make to make a comic vacation San Diego is definitely the way to go but he just wanted to mention you look at wanting to drive to and that's it will look at look at it. With the way this deal works because everybody goes there used to be it probably is to lesser extent -- drug -- that was -- and turn and -- fan event a lot more so. You know when I first started going around 2000 you can you can meet people and get sketches and get signatures and things like that. It you know now you're gonna wait a line for almost everybody -- last year is -- 2000 people or attachments at this. It's just to protest too much registered -- and -- in -- city maybe the Red Hat conference in 2000. It was a (%expletive) load -- and and you know. Everybody wanna see is gonna be this that's the good thing but. You sort of what's your personal time with people in your ability to connect to becomes a lot more difficult because it is a mass of humanity in the biggest sense. For my money I think that you -- you have to go to once absolutely have to like if you're really into the comics it's such it experience. But he wants on the where you can meet more creators and and and sort of that several of what's on the talking going to know people have more ads that. -- sort of -- mid -- ones heroes -- a lot of talent goes to it or emerald city or wonder con. They're much more laid back. Just like what -- be part of what San Diego as we've talked about is that the there's you know there -- movies TV video games become a real media event yes and whereas this the midlevel commences fought matches -- perhaps some of that there and wonder -- have some more stuff but. It's still in primarily about the comment only go to one economy we've we've we've made comments along the lines of hey look this shows about comics and because San Diego has you know like. On one side of the floor you'll find that its movie studios and and boots and things like that and a lot of people go for that stuff which is all well and good. Bomb but it can be you know it's it takes big part of it. And others -- also there yet it was a constant strictly American pop culture festival really for the most of statues and pulleys and collectibles and -- Yeah I don't want us -- or."

" It's not about meeting. It's too big to meet creators like that at this point it's more about spectacles about four days of you know sensory overload and it's also about social activity which is. In Park -- with everybody's stake a small area so after a time you you have to social circuit. That's as much about the continent elsewhere is the other constantly like that you go to come. You know -- I don't know that there."

" Well there's we'll talk about a little bit what goes on the Con-way expects that in due after the break."

" We're going wage deep into the convention too deep if you ask me."

" Download and now owned. Deeper into the -- what can you find at a convention. On well you probably -- that almost up this panels. Panels well I guess it -- kind of William observes before the panel click the main focus of the convention is the constant war for sure that's and that's at. And that started off being in the issue permits us Europeans like the dealer room and easy these conventions were. Originally when they Serwer for two business things they were for people to come to the publishers see what the coming up like for like retailers and and then at retailers are commitment is to sell this stuff yeah there's a focus thing so on the top floor that's where you can find. You know retailers with back issues and toys that vendors of that but it was well. They're companies like marvel and DC dark horse to set up -- to show you what it back again marketing and is that they have so the center of attention is a couple of when he walked in that's the big removable boot in the light of pretty much when you've got a downtime you're wandering the conflict. Which you could do -- Lesley -- it here you can literally one of the convoy of four days and not feel like you -- San Diego tip. Don't walk the -- for if you know where you're going go outside the counselor walked outside because it's so it's about half a player I think -- yeah. Yeah actually head of -- up -- point -- where the concourse so wide and you know that okay well artists out down here on in the marble with armed cutting across the crowd as possible go outside walk down in the back end but I did that. But yes and as the top floor but then to pull people out of the top floor they'll."

" panel for the pen and panels almost on the board. Potentially can be great if they can be fantastic and they sort of exist again off and on the spectrum. It is -- on a Friday or Saturday mostly set Saturday become a movie days of like you're into. You wanna see the upcoming stuff things that it is our seats. Or CP cast members -- right of these. Pretty much Bellotti what's gonna camp out. There and that's -- day I mean if you're gonna do that that's you're gonna do. You know the same time though if you're interested in. You know. Robert Kirkland. It the chance -- be a spotlight on Robert Berkman and you'll go over an hour and a half and he'll talk about them is when -- people interact and into the back and forth."

" Major publisher of the marvel and DC we'll do kind of like state of the union kind of panels about the in the lines will be like a excellent panel that is Superman panel of the -- and passed. Us yeah. Let's face it -- in typically what they do is that they'll now have the craters there are a million make the announcement that that could that the panel rather go through what's going on -- highly double then often they open up the questions as they like to interact with these services much sport on the -- yet. But -- and let you view of the DC nation panel pretty much its its video answer questions the entire time in the next -- announcements throughout that yet so I mean it's your chance and you're sitting at home reading just the American won a life sucked so bad. This structure you ask these you better these concert that is why is just one want to let you know people with the get ready. Have to back when you read people do I mean that this actually get a good point too. There but we get into a lot of animals we know hundreds and obviously for a lot of -- and had to do it panels. Here's here's a tip don't ask what's gonna happen they'll go hey what's that an end of life that gonna end in."

" That's how good past elections drastically yeah. You know you don't wanna because -- Rosie and answer -- it read the book to find out why did tell you that because it here -- that they want to buy the book find out. They're not answer these questions we've talked them today are there is exasperated as we are don't."

" Don't if you got a joke. Like if you got a thing that you wanted to say that if you test it on an audience for a specific -- a lot a lot of it'll come up and he'll be. Ready to toss off. They'll say something. And he's just met with the most morbid silence on the face of the -- that's probably not spend what they -- also is that a lot of these writers and then come on guys that they like have a good laugh too and they might happen at your expense so yeah yeah and who -- not to get too insulted to know that it's all part of the fun but they're gonna make jokes based on what you say is well. And yeah Nvidia's gonna make fun of everybody -- as long as possible for example. Joe Quesada pretty much answers everything but doesn't take (%expletive) you know to me yeah it's pretty sure he would appreciate it he doesn't like -- the way it like what you're asking whatever -- disagree with you. You would yeah sometimes. Frost is that as a watchers that's it's although those are my favorite moment -- it yes it like a year that was here a couple years or marvel was of these restructuring. And actually didn't have -- insignia or they are they had just patient. And we're at the cup of Joe panel whatever wasn't somebody gets up there -- goes. I don't socket marble and as a stockholder I'm extremely disappointed as the boot. And decide -- just like I. I don't know if Tony. But this I was angry unit and in the whole room -- you know yeah. But you know quiz let's clinical lots of guys like Kazaa for example the guy who's really good. That he will take that question like he'll answer the stuff he may even let me answer you want. But like you can ask him anything you want I've seen him do it -- he goes all through that which is with us which is now just. And end of some of those craters are very -- like a few years ago was the hold of women feel lament is argument with the guy who was in the Justice -- cartoon came out somebody raising and asking why was caught girl and Jon Stewart the blue green lantern and it. And it became a very kind of you know gender race question and Judd -- and Phil Jimenez is two guys who don't take any -- that conservative and it was like an argument with a good to Daniel if that was fascinating to losses."

" That's those -- so rare and it's got into that don't have problem and it probably is -- to -- endless hours of drudgery to get to wear them. -- to a panel and we don't go to single one last round and I just can't sit two. Endless questions of what's gonna happen this -- like."

" announcements that don't have any effect in my life or letters yeah. Unbreakable the books you don't care about -- see them you know I really liked the thing is there's always keywords that they know that they can say to certain members of the giants moved roker reaction like -- elect. And that remember a format member before -- for guardians of the galaxy came out there elect and rocky raccoon -- and of Ubuntu and I. True but I -- six that's I didn't you know like that's how I work."

" And it's it's just five years later he was that you would be Little -- like it's true it's true yeah history there are a whole lot different types of fan applicator to and I am aware of that. Okay so some there's some panel stuff there's this like. He speaks speaks to answer questions that's all we ask -- masculine in all the years I've never ask a question I've never felt as if I had something worthy of and I never did at a convention. We are fat off -- tentative aren't that Cisco yeah we -- we --"

" So it argues is every feeling -- every pot had. -- Down on the floor you've got a lot of signings and and this and thought sketches and things like that we did show about -- awhile back com. When one of the really cool things out as you get to meet. People who work you respect and if you have any creative aspirations of fantastic way to sort of connect with other artists and things like that. You can go to DC -- with the darker future in the Booth and they'll be there the creators will be there in the -- lines but that but. Take the time to go find artist's -- whenever -- army has mostly and wonder that because you either some -- possibly never heard of the stuff you really like. Or you'll find that -- you need to know was that the confidence in -- by himself in the line and who talked them. And it's really cool when you. You get to talk to somebody. And you realize that. They're they're they love comics just like you do like I remember the first time we ever talked to Greg rock -- like for some reason I had been incredibly intimidated but likes. I don't -- I do like loves comics and it you can tell like he. He takes it seriously -- too seriously and like he'll talk about the work that he's doing and it's fascinating. From the -- standpoint if you want sketches are you want commissions or whatever gets there first. -- now I -- right to the artists who want. You should be prepared Muslim most are charged in these days because a sentiment fell child will be on this sensitive mitochondria jerks they have to -- so away pretty much 52. About a hundred dollars depending on who the artist is on the board and yet. On the -- yes you can name. -- It's obscure character or somebody haven't done a long time -- Harvard reference I remember Paul writes for us. He got a -- from cliff Chang he's the one of the original golden -- green lantern. And and clubs and that's great can you give me some things like dancing and it looks like he had to go buys something yeah. And -- a significant. People that not all have encyclopedic minds of all these things and this is a good thing to remember general I mean the same rules that a -- in life -- be nice you know and again like it my word maxim almost everything the decree and and the -- I didn't just out and hit the is that applies also to walking around the San Diego even it was a -- really -- crowded. Let it be patient -- every year anyway so yeah let people go. Whenever and wherever I can I deferred kids went to their kids there let them Friday. You know then Lazio on death than don't want you are -- kids for -- that is officially with a can of the couple you know -- give into the I think that's not a problem that's true that I was -- a lot of good dancer if if if you are the type who likes to. Make it -- you. This is your -- there exists and -- your time you I -- with pride you know it's gonna find you shouldn't be your friend to are funny to our friends spent the entire Saturday at one or cotton dress up as black widow Spider-Man just taking pictures of people yeah walking up and allows people wanted to pictures -- the you know it's a lot of fun a lot of."

" Who make easy joke about the -- doesn't cost him and I think it's funny because to me I always think even people who don't necessarily look let's say good -- I always. It's so -- is at a convention like. They can just go be themselves and do they wanna do and like that takes an enormous amount I would it's accepted it Soledad Atlanta and they can just go ahead -- and so like it's easy to make a joke what we're gonna cost him. But the fact isn't -- they're totally they're being completely. Self confident about it."

" Like they're there except the love I have for the -- really love what they do it yet."

" So be nice of those people has some general more logistical tips we're comfortable she usually get your feet for eight hours fossil today. Bring bottled water. Water is coming out of -- have no idea. Don't use the eight yen in the commences and never because -- of the lions this people don't realize they're gonna buy stuff for the need to go to it. -- you get get a couple underdog before you go and that's also works shipped ups. Fair enough bring if you can bring snacks is it quiet and a those all the spirit of the those those power bars and things that category little -- thank you for the bad. Get a bad being carried a keep yourself looking at convention if you watched it -- yeah yeah he's. You will see people with the luggage carts with the short boxes get him that's it that's their thing you know let everybody that is willing to sign every she's ever done fine but to some bottles or behind you do have to wait for the you know. Get a couple things and he'd be nice I mean editing is that it could be completely fund flew it into the conclude tiring you're gonna -- it all -- or -- Yeah pretty dead sanitize. But if you're looking like if you look at it go to San Diego. -- So here and for next year's are looking in January February about ten for hotels always try to find one that's within walking this is the concert for any convention register for the com right now VMware is that you think you're going you wanna make your plans. Do it now and then I don't think there's a -- saw out here just I don't know. The ones -- if you're probably a bit but check the website better safe than sorry as early easy ten -- hotel try to get him walking distance. What can San Diego that's key to what we do we're five walks away and and it's. You know it because you just -- drop stuff just collapse you know and and you don't you don't wanna to conduct an. Yeah and it's like yeah yeah -- here we sit here it's time we see like what like twenty -- playing a driveway. Soc because you're away from what in the thick of it. But it's fun and I look forward to every year from Xavier -- that they remember in the first year San Diego visas before cellphones prevalent in Milwaukee talkies yeah but that was -- that was big -- is that was because Motorola walkie -- Yves -- contact with everyone Adam this is well -- epithets it. Like you see Obama. But I had a meeting point you have to meet equipment now cell -- text messaging house here in us into your friends and we see. This is a meeting -- announced a crowded you know yeah."

" Nice thick carpet DC doesn't smart but those specific agent disagree with him tomorrow yes. Over icons over that and it's just you know. So if you Cuba that's legal counselor as much or doesn't tell what you're experiencing the union also contact that I am an outcome. It is what's -- eight and was 32626. 78. Appetite to -- the stuff."

" Feel like they're a billion more things you could have gone over soda you can think of them put -- in the thread left him what I can't comment on this show. This is -- a podcast is that going on recently written content yet subcommittee will -- more stuff and -- we knew. So we here we are and I hope I'm enjoying myself right."

" Programs on a budget defeat her ability do hurt. It's a handsome should be down. You can get those -- the -- dot -- slumped by about I can't let up on horse that's sort of by the spider the power responsibilities there is -- to do with Eddie Snyder it's. It that I. What are the picture. -- the brilliant night."

" Also calls there are three and two. You look like bad weather videopodcast Republicans just back and without having to do that he."

" Well yeah."

" Now let's assume -- somewhere."

" This episode of iFanboy is brought to you by godaddy.com. And Squarespace dot com."

They're companies like marvel and DC dark horse to set up -- to show you what it back again marketing and is that they have so the center of attention is a couple of when he walked in that's the big removable boot in the light of pretty much when you've got a downtime you're wandering the conflict. " And it's it's just five years later he was that you would be Little -- like it's true it's true yeah history there are a whole lot different types of fan applicator to and I am aware of that.

Conventions

Hey Connor, Josh, & Ron!

Great show, but I have a few questions. I have been reading comics for a long time now and recently just started to debate on going to cons; however, I find it difficult to find conventions near me. Therefore, is there a place that one could go to get a listing of all of the local cons near him/her? Also, you mentioned Ithacon (I too live in NY in the Capital Region) so I figured I would see what it was about. However, they still have the information from 2009. Since you mentioned to register as soon as someone could for the con they wanted to go to am I looking in the right place, or does this only apply to the big cons?

Thanks for your time and keep up the great programing!

Great episode although I don't think I will be attending any cons and anytime soon. I did however find out that there's one in my state about 2 hours away. I'll check that out sometime next year though.

(my apologies in advance if this goes on for a bit...)
Hey guys, I hope your trip to SDCC was a great one!

I just heard your show on Conventions and was very impressed. You just about covered everything about cons in general, and layed out the dynamics about SDCC. I've been going to SDCC for a while now, only taking a break twice (this year, and once more back in 06', this stemming from having gone since 99).

It should be noted, that prior to the advent of the interwebs, a con was a place that REALLY got news moving. Announcments of new creative teams, storylines, etc. really stemmed from the con, be it big or small.

I agree w/ you guys that a paradigm shift has taken place in SDCC making it a mecca of all things media. Usually all 4 days has Hall AB dedicated entirely to TV/Movie panels.

Another thing to consider, SDCC had particularly humble beginnings at the El Cortez Hotel (apparently in its basement area). I have yet to confirm this, but it's a wonder of how much has changed.

My first trip to con was something to remember. I was an intern at Dreamer Designs (at the time, they did lettering for Top Cow), and I was invited at the last minute to go to Con. Little did I know that "last minute" usually means "too late" for SDCC. I had neither a hotel, nor a means to pick up my badge (since I wasn't registered, and used a badge of a staff member that was already in attendance).

I arrive in San Diego (by Grayhound), lugging around my portfolio and luggage, and try and hobble about downtown SD in what must've been weather well into the 90's. I luck out and find a hostel. So desperate to just rid myself of the heavy luggage and portfolio, I take the roach infested hostel and head down to the con. Getting my badge was another disaster, but managed to get in w/ a poorly drawn counterfeit (these being the days before more sophisticated bar-code tech was available for event staffers) and manage to reach Dreamer Designs to get the exhibitor badge that was fully intended for me to use.

After basking in the cultural mecca of SDCC, I head by to my quarters, only to find that my luggage is roach infested. The showers were limited to one per floor. Disgusted, but still intending to finish out the weekend, I check out, get my deposit back, and lock my belongings in a Grayhound locker and proceed to waste the night away w/ Street Fighter vs. X-Men (this after checking out the nightly events at con).

Despite the horrid experience of that first trip, it manages to be a first among many. I'm taking a break from it this year, only because my wife and I needed a break after a fiasco of a year that had no time for preparing for SDCC this year. I fully intend to participate at least for one day in 2010.

Couple of things to add to tips on going to cons...
- Deodorant. There's a distinct odor that manifests when walking about San Diego midway through the summer, and then being surrounded by bodies in a convention floor... consuming any number of snacks purchased at consession stands. Best not to offend your fellow con-(wo)men, or your favorite creator.

So... what are your favorite con moments? What prized piece of merch have you taken home from a con? What was your first experience at a con like?
