The Gift of Comics
Wednesday, December 17th, 2008 running time 26:45
The season of giving is here, and iFanboy would be remiss if they didn't share some of the best comic book and graphic novels gifts you can give (or just buy for yourself) this holiday season.
Buying gifts is tough, but the many good publishers of comics have released a bevy of excellent volumes for gift giving this year.
Sure, everyone knows about the Watchmen movie coming out, but the best version of the comic that spawned it is Absolute Watchmen, as well as the companion piece Watching the Watchmen.
You want straight up superhero action from the best of DC? Check out Grant Morrison's JLA Vol. 1, the Deluxe Edition.
A gorgeous version of Howard Chaykin's classic American Flagg is now available from Image Comics. This is comics history, and deserves to be read.
You can't appreciate modern comics without appreciating all that Jack Kirby did, and Kirby: King of Comics is a great way to do it.
If you know iFanboy, you know we love Queen and Country, and the the Definitive Editions are the best way to read them.
You want to give a good cry this Christmas? Try the Essex County books from Jeff Lemire.
A whole lot of people in their 20's who are trying to learn about themselves and the world will appreciate this beautiful collection of Local.
If you know anyone into World War II history, you could do a lot worse than this box set of Bill Mauldin's WWII work, Willie & Joe: The WWII Years
If you can't find some gifts in there, then there's just nothing we can do for you. Happy Holidays nevertheless!

" Kirby king comics by market in the air. This is sort of an art book and sort of a biography where. Market news sort of the authority. On Jack Kirby and then and there will be shows later this year about. That. Well -- is coming yet Oprah okay okay that we have to -- it went Kirby. -- At a time with you. There's a lot of monarch and the hurt Kirby is great. -- courteous thing does that tell a story of why he's been called anchor sort of a joke. But this is a book that shows you. Very very specific is that pages are gigantic particular. Yeah but and and and they've gone a lot of ritual -- get to see us at this stage at each stage. Reprints of the of the colored finished products things like that you really see it. You see what it is about these pages and they they explode. I'm not kidding you like it's just jumping off the -- the energy in the town that that this guy had and also that you know story of Jack Kirby. Is a real interest in. And B is really imperative for anybody wants understand why comics work the way they do now as well as the way -- and so much has changed. And you really have to appreciate that how much -- gave to comics. And and how it -- Right how -- it how much better it is now. Was evidenced by a new look at you currently this year -- to be things this year DC comes with final crisis and from marvelous secret agents of the scrolls and presses are dark side for the world. Both Chris Tucker yes. I mean anything you know. Be on the in the fact that -- the designs that he made he came up with in the sixties for example. That the event you know the basic design of the Oscars are exactly the same haven't changed. Yet and they still work or occurred just Cox it is it's historic superhero comics very justices that kind of art. Anyway this is fantastic book -- you know Martinez -- find out a lot of people. -- Kirby who don't you don't know our comments -- you know like a lot of people know about it was a big big big name. This is a great way to experience --"
" It's funny I a I saw it irons I've never seen on pencil -- that's privileged individuals or I like Kirby drive. I'm not just from certain imports like it proceeded on pencil -- before acres oftentimes you ruined it -- Act like besides customer outside your -- to relax a dark side have titles like holy (%expletive) that's what it was like. Couldn't believe how much better is pencils -- than what I've seen -- there really."
" news and and the thing is he what's fast and this is all stuff -- on my. I wouldn't agree to draw would be amazing and he didn't he didn't thumbnail that he didn't plan -- did -- if you ever have a chance to go to me that show he figures that show original Kirby are go. Not regret it it'll be amazing moving along."
" I would love that book -- All right intent. If you got out like a brother or dad or somebody in the spotlight stuff like the Bourne identity or James Bond. What kind of thing. It's -- titles of those -- drowned when Bob Arnot visited -- yeah it's a lot of my data back and a -- country music through definitive editions are only press this this collects the tyrant. Our country right here my aunts and Horton coming up at clicks deep cuts but many enemies. But this is the full. A regular C ministers -- right here and this is great for people who spied introduces spot that it told more realistically with a lot of political intrigue. In the power -- Run around do flips and you -- you know tightly in his paperwork to have a lot of psychological problems along being at this button issues yes these spy and it's. So this is like -- Great little packaging but also if -- if you're -- is books and -- to become the stuff by comics the third edition. Useful little of ecstasy got. I was really impressed by that the first four scripts are completely abdicated might regret Hillary tells you where to doctors do his research from -- it. India from where eBay's stake he collected in states where he could've done things differently. Yet he told you so I told students but then it. How you know based or if you're to -- writing comics he goes through I -- com. -- because it is ever editors marveled as reluctant to -- all the he's a profit jumped in the process stuff he's. Paternal elephant but really you're talking about fantastic series -- forgot how good it was -- re read these."
" India and it. Are saying but it probably reads better on."
" It does it at all to keep track terrific and really doing that thing would be third volume you jump out of historical novel come back. The problems is at fault but you can sort through not not yet not proxy you do that -- novels I've read one press. But creek country for -- spies on people let's pop plant."
" If the equipment thick books and box. That's great he doesn't Brett Keisel. It's it's it's -- it. That's what's in here sneak sneak sneak the courage."
" A little a little -- Treo books I would recommend if you got if you get him. Or sister. War somebody who Alexi emotions -- And -- Or just you know happy and people really or viewers can have an argument. Yeah right -- Which you know look at the Essex County series but just the mere. -- three volumes by three recently came out this past fall the first on this tales from the farm the second fiscal ghost stories that there was for the country nurse. Jeff Lanier wrote and drew -- and they're all these little stories of growing up in rural Canada rural yeah. -- up it's exactly it's inform his reality of living. The first story is about a little boy who lost his parents as the uncle can be friends the sky and and and how he feels kind of you know grown up and the second one is the one that."
" Rips your heart out stops at all our enemy -- hits of Toronto and then come back he does is on a postage. I ended oh my god. I know definitely station it's between two they were hired I cry -- exactly and -- where's the and that dog you recruit and it's about the tale of two Brothers who hockey players and and in the third one which. Completely continue to deliver of the country nurse. And it multiplies the mall Lan and it's nice time shifting yet in this is great well thought out well -- the horse I have. I like anything had never seen totally unique people swear noses the totally. -- decent human and and very often it is very yes it's on the ocean -- on the ocean facial expressions and particularly yet. These books are so good and it's and this is an example we talk about how comics as a graphic novel medium. In these are the is is one graphic novel that somebody can read and really -- you know if you give somebody who read this doesn't have some sort of emotional reactions and then their cold dead -- that's -- so let's just. Actually. I'm not and a lot longer mode right now he's typical assortment of -- There's little bit of so I mean definitely on the from Bob pulled my top shelf and just support the public all -- in that assessment of abstinence. We've got more to stick around."
" We want to thank square space for sponsoring -- square space is a publishing system for anyone looking to build a -- portfolio -- kind of website in the news release square space operas uniquely flexible tool for just about anyone with no coding experience required. They -- of high -- complex web sites at the same function around the you'll find that some of the highest traffic pages on the web. Power and large businesses the blogs square space gives everyone the opportunity Google pages that are just as powerful and flexible as those the big dogs check out the new. And and heavy need help when he forced him support -- rate their eyes it to help import all Leo post from my blogger page. Go to Swiss -- dot com and try it for free for two weeks today he's echoed iFanboy when you're ordering to let them know that we -- banks."
" Gates Josh we're not quite that was -- this yet we want to announce a little contest there were doing this where is based. The person who goes there and signed up for free two week trial on creates a website and as. Anything to do with comics some sort of comic -- website. And will will pick the winner from -- good luck and thanks."
" If you are looking for book that is about places -- Lidstrom I have read it. Now while that I'd I don't know how did you let -- probably -- bony crest recently -- this collection now. My favorite books in the past couple years local it's about places. And it's about places but about half. It's a great project Brian -- road and right Kelly drew it took for -- come out. And finally meet this beautiful hardcover collection it's to promote -- 1212 which."
" Of issues and about beautifully collected just that this is a vehicle production but I -- read this -- bought this just about -- Roth talking about the issues -- heart. Awesome and I read it late at night and it's probably good idea because it was like to rip yeah."
" Its its sister it's a tale of really ironic is that this Christmas let you know like -- said it's -- places that's his opinion but you're on the main."
" It's interesting to note from -- all of the he wrote -- back issues equipment here. And it goes in the process could be -- process took forever. -- start off with a -- places she was making is going to be back protector and he realized it was an it was about making -- of the should the book shifted from. And of the few places to be about her."
" And so so what what the book became was is a story -- and she's moved around the country and half northeast should be an actual tennis. Should -- the skin is true figure that probably -- But so how she was all around North America and how she kind of runs from her problems to deal and how she deals with problems you romances and yet. And and it all cut and easier kind of ageless or twenties if you know someone who's in their twenties if you know someone who is on their own funds for the first time were innocent -- Toronto Los Angeles San Francisco Chicago."
" But nothing ecstatic that he knows what -- won this this is should be a Bible for people who -- places written a I mean we're we're just out of our twenties and what got me was this all about being lost it. Not every direction not going to do with your life you think you've found something in the ruining it and it ruined for you and not being. Totally get it through your twenties and security of the bookstore -- she's 1817. And it's just 38 yep and for small you can tell me. -- that's passed it yet and that's it looks the same but older yet."
" Right Kelly this is also you also see right Kelly involves artists where the first issues -- a kind of concerned because this started and -- who five. For that if finished this year LA and by the last issue he hit Brian -- become such a beautiful artist -- a mess full facial expressions and and getting you know emotions across. And you see her age and it all ties together."
" What if you don't have his law and this is not act like absorb those lost much one of them direction you know concern because I didn't a lot of people like them. And I think it's really glad. This spoke to me a lot for would be someone who didn't have -- focus or a no not knowing what they wanted with the -- and she's totally China's attorney -- goes by the end."
" All the press got me. What's playing on and then there's this sheet for yes for the what are getting this but yet this is great and Evelyn this is -- everything I have every -- guy or girl yet and it totally the guys like it."
" Australia is one of them takes place in Brooklyn. Yeah in my particular neighborhood where I live instant and it was really creepy because the what was its like to block that places like over the head out les yeah the fifth at."
" Beltran and you know as a way to eat and connect is that as a reader for millions and cities and then all."
" What took so long that he wanted to be authentic so keep got you have to get research could keep contact most of comic stores -- you're sick and you. Tell me what you know places to -- photographs pharmaceutical it was a process."
" It was Chicago one is very accurate is very much like those the man takes place and this -- I don't I didn't have -- couples towards the future -- the beginning and you get some interesting details but. Really relative immunity amid humidity for excellence. Brian was not upfront with us. That Europeans could sell it just because -- spoke to suppress that sob you don't know if you know fan Brian would. In this. -- or perhaps it's a lot to me he didn't think you like net that is the potent actually -- people don't think I write this stuff like it."
" And you would get this this month governor coming up I'd. I saw the room in San Diego I saw it I just -- I thought that is that looks awesome and I said we should talk about in the shot -- and you've had it."
" Well yeah. Willie and Joe the world or two years is actually a little different is not comic books this -- comics strips comic strip swell little one page a big. I don't know what pervade public park site like. Not that. Right so basically what this is is. Bill Malden with the World -- II cartoonist it was an army in the world to tune in Europe and -- he did cartoons -- start assessment Tuesday organizing this organisms that threatened. And this is -- very -- if you Pulitzer prize he's -- mrs. This is you know this is classic but which covers is a new addition to I had growing up my software virtually all businesses to. This is that there's there's there's the -- schools I had out. -- In high school like it -- school read about them over and over but. I've seen this work before it's a great. Willie and Joe the two main characters -- cartoons on an alternative to sort of -- to -- and its music but not always funny jokes because of from the forties she was little difference and are by. But most importantly it does is it really captures. The war for the guy in the field a guy -- Friday. So much sewed up Patton wanted him out patent -- Silenced he wanted to stop it says let it be fun to bring you morale down because it was showing they're all -- they're all downtrodden -- on the --"
" He looked at the beginning on changes they're they're they're very clean. And very. All that the soldiers have all nice pressed uniforms that by the end like they're all on shade and dirty and falling apart. It is reflective of the time there's so much truth to it in no way."
" this is of this is there to service the army he was -- morale down patents that job and so anyway and I'll problem was general Eisenhower huge fans I don't know. Eisenhower -- patent. -- all the experts say it is comics and she images look this is looked upon as one of the classic works of World War II there -- nobody really chronicled."
" Like someone is as a scathing and in life they they islamists at the end of line to -- the -- of the -- in -- of the -- uniforms has -- and you pharmacy. Gets it it's just it it's really slice of like America -- you get right it will definitely GI it's really put this. Dropped ten graphics -- options. You know it's expensive -- big 65 dollars but you. You can get obvious discount retailers but this is like it's like thirty dollars -- lights -- It's it's really any many annual working that does this thing that needs this. Is really Democrat. The bill malvo are purple are in front lines hello so you imagine it's what -- Hillary. -- Basically you know. It's really it's really you get a feel for life -- as much as you can reading reading something this is great. This is great present these are great but there's there's one here the three as a guest house on May kindred remembered greed aspect to call -- joke it is -- probably like. --"
" Then there's the fact is he he he was -- she wasn't necessarily -- gun but it is there. Being an easy hit again by shrapnel and you have to out of this stuff and you have to respond -- all that stuff."
" Like like this her -- we can't -- much longer. It's a joke but it's also you know it's like we never got ammunition Leon about it or zionist."
" This would hear that there four soldiers and a Jeep in their bullets flying everywhere. And he's and targets flat and it says I hate to run a flat there's a lot of times. Being shot at the idea that it's it's is weird juxtaposition --"
" It was a because -- this is. This is you know beautiful stuff great great just great."
" So if if you can't find some lot of that stuff. And we can't help -- should know. Now let on if you've got other ideas to get an idea only discussion comprehend calling and incentives Christmas -- or half a happy holiday wishes that we needed it and weighs three to 6697. Or email -- confidence in what I found with what you're getting people for Christmas. I'm also go back and archive look at last year's chris' recognition because those who hold up it was just -- it's. Well hopefully. We're -- Behind my friend. I am."

I haven't heard that we were moving. We'll have to get back to you on that.
And yes, we write those shownotes, so the links have our amazon affiliate tag in them. Very thoughtful of you to ask.

Speaking of amazon affiliate links, can you guys set up an amazon.ca one also? I do all my TPB purchases on amazon and I'd happily give you guys a cut of each of those.

The Willie & Joe books look phenomenal. What's the price on those things?
