Comics from Movies

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 – running time 29:37
Big superhero movies are not the only comic book properties out. This week, iFanboy takes a look at some of the great comics that have been made into films.

We just experienced the summer of the action packed superhero movie, but making films from comics has been going on for a while now. What's more, many people didn't even know the movies were spawned from comics. In this episode, Josh, Ron, and Conor show you some of the comic book work behind the feature films.

Whiteout isn't quite out yet, but that doesn't mean that you can't check out the excellent comic it was adapted from, by Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber.

The Crow was a huge film based on a huge indie comic of the same name.

American Splendor was an amazing movie based on the collective work of the legendary Harvey Pekar, as well as artists like R. Crumb.

Ghost World is a cult film from a cult comic. While the tone is the same, there are completely different stories from the movie, so you can have more!

One big budget picture from a small budget graphic novel was Road to Perdition.

Finally, the movie A History of Violence started off like like the graphic novel, but the story ended up quite different.

" Hey welcome to another episode of my family the -- book discussion show my name is problem here with honor. And I Josh this last summer was. An explosion boom of comic book movies -- most of them were superhero just keep doing it. They're also room lose some yes weather and -- reminds me -- was -- Yeah I mean he's helpful. But there have been a lot actually it's -- past. Tenure you know little longer that that have been based on the copper properties in the movies actually fairly big. But. The comics aren't all that amounts are actually in these properties which really common now because every property the size option. But these are all all things that became movies do this to the kind of movies up there that they didn't really Dylan's. Yeah comic books the words based on the graphic -- cool you know people. I don't know enough people watch children -- Clinton noted complicate parents -- And it now. And that they're good did not end in both these they're great comics but also some good movies and so on its muscle you know. But it's good to get -- see this the stuff that it came from and take a look at a little walk -- The source of terrorists yes. The person o'clock this action movies not went -- preview for a preview why -- rocket -- lever. The movie was supposed to -- out by now. Since that little while maybe next year -- sessions -- earlier earlier on nine beds this. The third to February or early February march and -- for the watch yeah. I'll be ahead right after it. That however it is important to say that for me this is I think my first exposure America if not confirm the stuff that he did it."

" DC that's a different exposure is great -- lets you probably read -- and stuff this is what you've become a big names and people like paycheck is doing what he's other stuff. And number this this -- paid. They really capitalize on on his name recognition Batman this -- white. We know when -- bought it."

" Anyway this is the first thing that really made me say -- electric. This is. Excellent book it is federal Marshal is dispatched to Antarctica to investigate first artist ever happen. That's that's basically the -- it's emerge as a murder mystery then. It's about Kerry who's who's the tough federal Marshal in and you know all the stuff she discovers. And and -- yet and territories as a in this season now's not territories. Not if not exactly Iraq this -- issues of British girl who -- on British secret agent who catches from. Country country the thing about Antarctica and like our station that is that is. As fascinating place to present then you basically go there and you're you're on your -- it takes a kind of person. -- kind of person be there for awhile and it its -- they're sort of cut -- society. Plea for a long time in so the Chinese take it's not not even a little."

" And it's and and I didn't catch anything I mean it has -- obviously know the title reference -- means that the white out of the snow right and you there were just in just a little less specifics about the base with the fact that like buildings are connected -- a wire that you kind of hold onto as you walk between -- because you get out there you can't see anything -- life I don't know yet the way to being a storm that is so. This I would like us you literally kept changing planes can't come N helicopters can't land you're completely stranded there. And like a sandstorm. Holes. For me. This is this again --"

" Now it just great Marxist -- in the past or yeah. Thousands that it needs to get more work and means and I love the way it works and what's really cool about this book is it Tallinn in black light which is not a big deal but. When you look through it's almost Arabic uses lots -- which is something that doesn't use anymore which is the sort of -- stick on patterns stuff that he would put on the pages men and and that's how -- gets patterns and fabrics and things like that. And I've seen him like using these sketches from this and it it's it's fascinating watching construct because he. That's being everything and then he goes over the white at such as with the white out. Liquid paper to put -- as you look through the page you can actually see that on that they're just gorgeous and and it's like Greg Erica. The first time. He was a crime novelist still is still doing it apparently but he's coming in applying that the -- books. And that a lot of times -- come in from another media dudes. About it -- for the medium and and not get comic books right away right but this is just. Great."

" He -- Thomas yeah. And the despondency sequel melts that's not a -- switches as do not give it also there. Now this is limited data read this fretted for Weaver -- Fannie -- country -- you to -- yeah and he'd never say never seriously -- is one of all of our -- ours is certainly really talent so and read it for the movie sets and other criminals look at my copy is not. -- motion picture right because he doesn't at a picture -- excel. As a Frank Miller. Pony has now resigned just size like the queen creek country didn't then went on definitive editions which are smaller theater yet. So and I school sites that have come out next year maybe. Truck. A given immunity so now let's turn back the clock to a as the only engineer it's okay let's go back there had awkward Josh. --"

" Until probably doesn't want. The 55."

" Around it all fit fit fit. Oh you mumbling you -- it. Both -- talked much here and."

" It's worry college -- zawahri your junior high school and we beat you up. I'm sorry. I wasn't enough if I was in the computer. -- I think more than the -- and it -- so we're back in near Mecca and didn't really junior high -- guy -- Other movies. Most jewelry I Obama talking about the that the but it probably became familiar with the -- And I've never newest competent that your new -- and I and at the time I've ever let that that was kind of it was the Bradley thing -- Bradley Presley on making use it and then you have to -- and it. Brightly dyed -- and meticulously I heard -- he was. But it was like -- Yeah it was a as a stunt gone wrong. And it also the crew of the crow you know was it was a done by JO Barr and and our public agency press and you know and it had that iconic you know white faced with -- black kind of Janelle you know the joker -- Which at. At that time period 1994 with like the music that was involved in the whole kind of goth thing it just launched a thousand got a."

" Yeah. Back at it now that is what it really looks of let's this is -- even earlier in his eighties write -- comic book but like. All we're seeing is it that. This stories from the eighties the art feels like early ninety's our latest installment in the early eighties and a -- That this was a precursor for a lot of the stuff that followed after that very -- this. This kind of comic. You know this -- a lot of ground these qualifications in press at least this first came out. That he did it over a long period of time started in in 81 in you know didn't you know some of the stuff was finished after the -- he's one of those long labors of love -- what's really fascinating -- is that it was done. As a he was doing with subject basically like you can't tell what greeted by the I don't know what he's dealing with -- he decided it rains so he had working knowledge of weaponry. Which is also perished at this because. There's lots of guns and it its I mean. And the movies and his remarkable to me at the time because it was really violent and awful and this is. Or so and -- this was really. -- he goes and gets revenge on the bad guys and dozens were around and assorted."

" Approval though is there's this guy's -- skills. Census and then he dies and he's reborn as the crow and it its events. Everybody it was all -- you Josh you weren't around this May's reading books right and you were. And people who are new word -- does this huge resist huge huge conflict in fact. I can remember almost every story -- had just happened at the counter yet in this is always displayed prominently because this position on this comic book."

" At that time is of big Indian book -- book I mean an answer appeal. That was really this Hollywood pantheon of convenient looks like the crows gonna have to be the discussion of these of all time in the books ready absolutely and it and it's an end like said that the look and feel -- the lately you know kind of joke about the dolphins. That this is a precursor to -- like now it's a whole you know this is a lot of influence of influence for a lot of people of these people are -- people -- You know and it's funny because the the movie the movie in the movie was all right and in and they got -- got kind of -- bastion there was some peoples of that -- I mentioned."

" Show while bat -- frank Miller's sin city was my first indeed. What time Bob but I always knew of the krona and the crow was always there death in terms of just pop culture is all --"

" I remember when I was in middle school when it was discovered that there are other publishers of the marble and and so that the this company called. Do you see and I shouldn't until LeBron but. -- irony that but on the it was the cameras there aliens Federer books that are listed and then it was crop. And there's other stuff than it and it was a flew United behind him it was my thing. -- Were they are you want its its its really well done it is over time it absolutely is. They'll take -- back but also. It's incredibly. Here I suppose -- yeah. Excellence so it's from the heart and yet it did indeed the dudes got -- It is pain on the tape that it -- but that's that's a passionate people tune into loves as a reason why it's on all. You know exactly. A lot of nudity and it's through it's is contagious. Again and this is the creation topped that at some point before because -- excuse there in Oakland. And we come back from a lot more books talk about more black and white. Collar -- we've economist there is an axis -- four XAM and midnight."

" So one of the best performances of all time if you ask me about an account of movie has been Paul Giamatti in American splendor. I didn't -- I do this I -- that's that's. I don't know of humanity if you really I think that that movie for me is one one of the best out. Yeah if you ask me but it's tough because it's not exactly come as a biography. It's Andrew what has a sort of comics right now so it's it's. Based on. Can't wait we should explain who acts are repeat car is a he's a file clerk and a VA hospital Cleveland Cleveland Ohio and Ohio and disease curmudgeonly. Would you say that India Luna just weird little dude who's kind of angry at this stuff but it was also a really good writers was in two. Cartoons -- its gas. And he he falls into the into the -- from alternative comics world you know like where you know these these you know. He would sketched these stories and individual real artist and he right amendments that they -- the need for whatever reason -- connected with the visual medium of comics and it could not make comics stories like. Literally as mundane life are walking to work yup and that ended due to that -- pissed them off and it was is that there. And then in the movie I thought caption that kind of thing and and the head of the reasons but the books are big deal that there are accused of more so on. And I but there's the must be something to him. Where the weight that he is that attracts people -- because we'll let me just which is for me the same thing that that they like movies such things you like the movie."

" We spices and into the fascinating anatomy ninety I mean he's had his levels of stardom reluctantly. Of course and and he was on Letterman leaves on Letterman a lot. And it was just he was this unique character that people really. You were attracted -- because he was so curmudgeonly but also because an honest and you know how he you know how -- do -- the -- talk about things I mean he did you know. Great writer not a simple artists and what's what I like -- it's never been like party. Artists claiming -- over the years to glory still publishing books now on people or you know people now like to ask fill in the answers that are are illustrating his work."

" Some big -- lost a -- yeah I'd like down. And Derrick Robertson but it had an accident that had been got. I think they've responded because he is here presents the the downtrodden people never succeed and -- a lot of honesty. Some obvious reason this is a book. But think of -- indeed -- still think what's going to respond vessels in the books -- In that did the art of the centers now is not great man but it is it's -- president's arsonist pure -- this is this is our. And admitted Monday when -- when a standing behind. I'm older citizens of Nightline that's story interest and -- behind some what is going on but that's everyday life and he's so good at at capturing that that's -- title."

" The store and they hit. And at the end that artist by our crime was legendary you know kind of you know alternative comic -- of the sixties and seventies but -- and you know that the and the fact that it's -- life in the brutal honesty is the -- of his biggest hits have been -- our -- your audience profile when he when he had cancer -- that is what. You know great stories coming out of his his relationship -- with his with his -- and all that kind of deal in its its I mean it's definitely is -- lynch and sealed it's a life documented in comic form."

" Well I love. For decades -- at least you know the cool thing about is that because of the movie. All of those books are available yet you -- to -- where I guess I got -- and -- and and -- read it then that's at. Post movie concede right Jim does the camera Britain but previously they would have an -- perhaps yeah totally -- little small print some -- yes some -- a small publishers some of them so it was great it was -- I got I don't know -- memory I think but do what I got from the movie and also from interviews is is that. He doesn't get why anybody likes it either. He just like these are little stories you know like I am okay like he is attending where he's not the other a lot of people who were in college who were working to be successful and he's not hot lucky -- yes he has. Yeah exactly exactly which is very."

" So -- It's a very slender to -- as affluent the best in them alternative comics out there. And then also one of the one in my -- term artists rap artists is an up close. That's Klaus. Who. Who. Did in the ninety's that a series of they know what to call it series called B ball. You. Well no little sorry this is his his title and in the pages of eight ball he told various stories that you know people come out and there'd be like three or four stories and it and college. Yeah yes I want artists though right yet. And then what's happened in the late nineties is that they pulled the individual stories. And made it into graphic novels so like ghost world which is what -- here is once -- that came out the -- and -- and actually was made into movies aren't directions though Johansson he's shouting such acts when she was young she's really attractive too -- action interestingly since she was way too -- we -- But on the San Diego it's a bigger hit degrading and it was does Andy has a preview -- and a the great thing about -- close Klaus at least the way how -- connected with them is serving his stuff in the mid nineties right on the same times that was -- you go to college kids and realizes the world. And kind of whatever interests and aren't always easy getting to and did no classes the classic kind of art school. You know like these keys on the -- Manhattan and all the attention comes with that all the you know the attitudes and things like that and they all have been able to be distilled and captured and his various stories in some way shape of -- form not praising it not criticize it it's kind of presenting it. It's a ghost -- tells the story of two girls who live in the town and they just don't fit in and kind of how they end they look at the world as if it's of world ghosts and and kind of you know AP not dealing with the social situations and and you know trouble with relationships and things like that. -- But what's probably genius about the movie -- the casting of -- gently -- and that if there's -- person in this world looks like they were drawn by -- classic Steve -- they'd like it it it was it it news and it has the uncanny just and hair and just the clothes in the way Karen and -- apartment is Steve Buscemi is being who I think is what was great actor. That being able to come into the role be able to that the play it. But. Level of awkwardness. In the book carries over in the movie like feels good compact is complete and correct yes it's it's it's almost that the visual representation because."

" An actor. Apparently sectors going to be kind of attractive -- like there's something about the way to -- People aren't quite attractive man like you like you see. I want to say ugly mess but it sort of is he -- it's sort of awkward ugliness of just. Regular folks especially liked the people who you know people who are. Don't fit in they almost -- they strive a little bits of that unless they make themselves look like these and that's thats what these characters to life totally."

" It's probably a lot of people who can. This -- and an add a heart it's it's a ticket to tale of matured and grown up again girls graduate high school the -- on the trends on what to do their lives but. You know they don't want to move forward they want to move forward and an agreement and then this is kind of the misunderstandings they can happen relationship and it's also really honest about teenage life. Yes yes it says that so let's let's talk about some violent she wanted to get back in Britain and."

" Rap star in radius of teamed up with a special offer strife and boy bands. " You want on my mileage yet. -- you ransom violence -- ready if only. So in the late nineties there was a imprint that was owned by DC -- forget exactly but as a paradox. Paradox press and that's -- express mr. press add it to us some great kind of Brian. Crime scene both stories on there -- graphic novels. And they were black and white and they were done by some great and -- the size or that it was totally -- it was only ten years and it's not so far ahead of the summit failed to. As things are often -- And what came out of it though were too great stories that got picked up and made movies in the early two thousands on the first and be in the road to perdition smacks Allentown Susan's anomalous did you read you read the stuff. They did."

" Not -- I've I think coupled by Monica and nothing ruins and no he writes. Ann Arbor Richard to -- and that this is made to move at ten men just aren't Tom Hanks and Paul Newman and -- law channel and Daniel and yes this before telling my -- down to -- and this is this this this is a nonfiction. And I'm anti as a fiction piece of who's -- Newman pulled into. Basically it's -- it's an Irish mob war with the show eighteen Italians in Chicago now component and unity and I mean it's fictional president Irish relatives. If this update it it looks like it's an orchestra and it's it's just a monster and it's really. --"

" Is that all our father who is known affectionately as the Angel of death. He's the enforcer he's the killer for the mob and he gets on the wrong side of his bosses and then this other yesterday this kid and -- And but when I -- on the lam. But he -- taken out there there of their banks and if they kept records LA -- yeah exactly and for me this is a book that. He's much better than them came after for me and it just. It just felt like the move it was a little more toothless and that's because. In the movie what you had to do was make the character a little more sympathetic and him a little -- good guy in this is not very much he's Baghdad he's protective like that but. Because it's it was Tom Hanks which has -- that's interesting abuse but the it was -- doesn't really nice that he is fine basically he would bring you routed by the -- it was a bad guy right. Yeah right in smiles even -- okay. At least instrumental. In one did you know you do but -- it's it's just it's different town used to and I and I liked the sort of raw nature that's a little better IE."

" Really like the book but I do prefer the movies. A little bit more he's a little more super heroines he's like he's so good that he takes out when he -- guys in the room in the when she you know can get is that. He's a little too. -- little too good in the book but in terms of his shooting into an immense goodness. -- and the artist stands -- I -- litter -- five years to come out some like that because the artists have detailed and it's and it's it's."

" Almost photo realistic it's clearly illustrated it's supposed. If if you like -- did -- if you like some of the some of the kind of true crime or crime based books that we talked a previously that some. You know -- is torso and definitely you know you know books books along those lines that didn't want to check this out because it's it's it's that period pieces. You know."

" definitely boxed duties of gunshots in Canada are photos but in this isn't really fun book then not now does dispersion at least that's really -- that's -- real class is really operated and you know if you watched and liked it. This this adds that it it's not and it also this is music pure reaction right I enjoyed a somber tone button but that's just neglected simmons' work yeah. Finally -- history of violence. Which was Oscar nominated Oscar nominee was sort of deal -- and -- didn't tournament and Democrat were directed at Paris. Possibly one of the most chilling sex scenes in any movies are seen. The singer scene and a thick corporate. It's it's. But this is also published a paradox -- accidentally printed under the -- salesman John black infantry instrument. Are by Vincent Locke who I don't know it's. And art the art -- very sketchy sketchy which visited similar black like tone kind of kind. Eddie Campbell a little more together so yes the less itchy but yeah CNN said. This is one of the few times and I'll say it -- The moment few participants in the movie was -- what's the the movies really pretty good it is. The movie's real this is not a bad. Comic but it's not -- great on -- but the movie was great if you think -- do with the personalities they got the but it is I think at present story is Ron Burgundy. I think historical stories the story is also different -- yeah. That's different though that could not half. Instead some want the same in interest or is that terrorism you know this retired mobster Muslim and a new life and wants to and then tomorrow pulls back in. Now it's the same up until the point of being pulled back in it and in the movie and the book differ this just really violent like there's like it. Letters read there's a horrific torture of someone whose basic pushing down to what's impairment and he needs to live like Lian Zhan."

" This and greatness lies they can't cross in the movies and I think and what's interesting is that if you look at the tone of the book compared to the top of the movie -- berg is a director who to who who is as quite of quite reputation and he's taken he took lessen the violence Angela -- of the."

" Ecological model exactly exactly it's funny that arm that mean time I'll tents and oh yeah always the summit and you're telling -- this way more violent than I kind. -- It's -- it's just between you when you compare. The other did it always -- around -- target of some sort of comic books. If you've seen a movie first and then you look at this is desperately need them -- But like -- Six."

" Weird you know we."

" Look at those hot and it was like this is it was a weird."

" Depends and that it was like this weird you know like power struggle things in -- but if you saw the movie it's always good businesses have read the original -- with a."

" If you like crime and this yeah this is an end -- mom look at -- it's free it's free and it's I don't. I think it's pads to comparatively faster Vincent's on the."

" As these books there these books there were really did -- Cool. I had so do you have any of drama ideas of movies that that are accomplish so we have talked about on here -- you can just email contact and I can't what outcome."

" Calling me -- 83 to seven which could. Bad boys and -- fan -- and -- 66. Seen."

" Yeah if -- That's in. And you can talk about these particular books or the movies themselves at a time when I'll probably post about the show you don't have special fan or left and went our -- three dot com slash FM but it also -- discussion -- more video -- him. It is six. To just 76. Sometimes we're right here. --"

" I meant that man I want more of did you."

" Well that's an appropriate and it's recorded."

" War. This episode of -- fan boys brought to you by square space dot com. Godaddy.com. And radius earphones and rap star dot com. I think -- friendly.

Episode 96 - Comics from Movies [Discussion]

Big superhero movies are not the only comic book properties out. This week, iFanboy takes a look at some of the great comics that have been made into films.

Watch or download here

We just experienced the summer of the action packed superhero movie, but making films from comics has been going on for a while now. What's more, many people didn't even know the movies were spawned from comics. In this episode, Josh, Ron, and Conor show you some of the comic book work behind the feature films.

Whiteout isn't quite out yet, but that doesn't mean that you can't check out the excellent comic it was adapted from, by Greg Rucka and Steve Lieber.

The Crow was a huge film based on a huge indie comic of the same name.

American Splendor
was an amazing movie based on the collective work of the legendary Harvey Pekar, as well as artists like R.

Great show fellas...

Question: Was the Eastern Promises adapted from a comic book? If not, do you think it would have made a great read?

No, that was an original screenplay as I understand it.

If it would have made a good comic? Hard to say. The accents are something that you can't do very well in a comic, and that movie being about Russians living in London might have lost something in written form.

I'm kinda surprised you didn't touch upon the two biggest comics-to-movies people don't know are adaptations: The Mask and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Those, along with Men In Black, are very well known.

I knew MiB had some comics that came after it, didn't realize it was an adaptation.

Definitely knew about The Mask and TMNT though.

Among the comics reading community but not among the general populace which is what I thought you were talking about in the episode, unless I'm mistaken

It's all really beside the point. We picked these particular books because we like them.

I agree. I just watched MiB a few weeks ago, and was reminded in the credits that it was adapted from a Marvel Comic. Even I forget about that one. Most non-comics fan probably think the TMNT cartoon show came first (although that's the one you cited about which they're most likely to have heard of the comic, IMO), and "The Mask"... well, let's just say that anyone going to pick up an issue of "The Mask" based on the movie was in for a rude awakening.

I did get the impression from the episode, though, that they were talking about NON-Superhero-esque properties. "The Mask" and "TMNT" both fall into that category, at least. (And "TMNT" might be the most faithful comic-to-film adaptation I've ever seen, at least in terms of telling the first story.)

I just placed an order for the Radius Earphones that were advertised. One thing to note, the code that has to be used needs to be IFANBOY in caps. I tried it lower case and it wasn't working. You might want to point that out in your next ads.
