Comics of Unusual Size Vault
Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 running time 22:48
What's in the vault this week? Teenagers who REALLY don't like their parents; an English space hero returns to face his greatest enemy; and a young man who goes to war and finds himself!
This week, iFanboy goes into the vault to to check out three of their favorite books! First up is Runaways Vol. 1, Brain K. Vaughan's hit series from Marvel Comics. What happens when a bunch of teenagers find out that their parents are an evil superteam that runs Los Angeles with an iron fist? Well, let's just say that the angst level goes off the charts. Next is Dan Dare Omnibus. Dynatime Entertainment rescued this series from the smoldering remnants of Virgin Comics, and the iFanboys couldn't be happier. A Garth Ennis war story set in space and in a future where the British Empire once again reigns supreme captured all three of the iFanboys' hearts when it originally came out. Finally, there is Alan's War from French artist Emmanuel Guibert. It's the true story of Alan Cope's experiences during World War II, the kind of which are rarely captured in most heroic tales of battle.

" Last year we had a big surprise hit among three of us at least you see the draw it up -- you really edit it just didn't go that type of charts. A critical Henderson drumming for fear of coming and virgin comics -- The late this column a company which isn't around anymore put put out models needed to build phase -- Collins filled ill conceived perhaps. Not a bunch of books that nobody really caught onto about we we discovered and there last year and this is the hardcover version -- there which dynamite entertainment has put -- pseudonym picked up the if they picked up the rights and that was the one thing that wanted to out of virgin plastic it was -- probably came just recently. And it's to -- that the -- omnibus. Just. Let's generous. It's tanker -- that -- if you can see it's data point seven issue lot of I think all the books I think he'll talk like this. Which Horowitz it is because someone else -- I think it has fired -- about solicited then -- as you can see."
" Well as sex is there is no limit on the number of pages and on the bus and now. The -- is flexible and then we looked it -- and if you live in DC and on the buses disarm on the bustling. Question. In one volumes technically multi volume collection and now. I think you're nitpicking."
" Not city obviously -- actually looking it up Eddie -- back to call -- omnibus considered under the definitions of his former marketing and yet anyway. And a market terms testified as big ones which I'm not gonna let it get so let's have it right. So this is -- the labor of I don't know if that is labor and I don't labor with something but out of a couple that only -- part. With like maybe I'll oats were. And it's back but again. This evidence of the complete collection of the miniseries that we all read that and I loved -- it will. I knew that. Like so Ramallah this well. -- The great surprise -- is it a bit surprised books of 2007 and 82008. This is Rick MacArthur that's the Arctic -- skiing and it's it's a science fiction war story that -- the future and it's and it's. It was unique and I think had read it there was nothing else like it was basically guards and it's finding a way to do more -- comics but will the characters got to -- Then there's uphold. It English British Thomas editor. He start -- creator after the war over to NS has been around -- fifty years plus of the Captain America. Yeah -- finished -- it is and I -- sort of -- to the character is pilot is a super space pilot let me. An independent world David Goddard space and it got -- models but that is that he's the best outnumber."
" Quintessential. British soldier -- you know like he's stoic he is brave face -- fuzzy jacket."
" you leather jacket with the fire and he's an eyebrow what's what's great about the series is is that. It's never read that netbooks are never heard of this is. You don't need that read everything you wanted to -- to but the character everything also knows in the story all the information is there and and it's really interesting because it's like the return of his big villain that's almost like. It's just two years Batman comic story of some -- ministers that the joke prospecting. But that's how big this has -- but you don't need to know anything about dating another history you just need to know everything is president and -- Literally a little green man his Venus is ridiculous. To me con me coming -- right -- the enemy comes. With. We're related ten -- in this debate except for the story is in the future when China and the US of what each other out there it British empire is the dominant empire in the world's. Again which is all the British science fiction is always yeah I don't back the deadline. A quarter of -- But ultimately think that the net or else they spoke a Japanese space two -- was great and never came out last. And that's a base of any -- comes back and Marc Antony they had to bring down debt retirement to save the world again and it was. Exciting that was emotional I'm very -- we've read the salt once and you don't want to get this and it's so good. There's some heart wrenching stuff in here this great and I'm not British -- some great -- In a British online you know -- moments and it got some very sort of the in our crew that is close did you just Americans are now nobody. Welcome to the hearing that he's the patriarch about like. Well you can rob rob rallying. And in other space battles as battles planets a minute it I."
" Really the thing that statement that I remember is the sort of the naval battles so yeah. He's big ships who really wanted. Thousands Spezza then take all the space that way and you make it the ocean and this is what it does this the same thing as a big element is the hall."
" Graphic flashlights and why has there is the -- in -- cool. So if you like science fiction it's great if you -- war tops a straight to basically you were Obama Battlestar Galactica. Yes yeah yes definitely -- again. And objects that we had a lot of -- IFanboy viewers read it but I think. They don't want people should read it in the end and that's and one collection yet none of that's awesome it's if it's a really well conceived single Garko singled book. Do want -- who's better. You know -- is as fast as different departments that says this is a good -- kind of I think this is doing -- no language there's no raunchy nest there's no nothing don't make you cringe just straight up this is war stories process this is. This is battlefields professors is that that kind of confidence is not it was the boys this is not preachers has not punish terrorism not for crossed the processors are different but this is great. Great -- he does the sort of you know British."
" This at the books that really interest in. -- back out of the way that the waders but to get it pages it is fascinating and he's sort of reference. But I -- its intention for what I mean we'll. Six footer canonization pictures does -- things like that what it always works agency was that he does Jesus not only for referencing but are we of the tuchman he lays out hope that the yeah and on the page layout with the -- and then -- just like twice to work it does it. Tell us where it was a lot of fun. He's sometimes also."
" This is a this is a great clutch so excited if McCain when it first announced it was right before version folded into the horses I don't know that -- It hasn't but it did this yeah. So when we come back more war."
" Thanks to Netflix sponsored -- have a sort of iFanboy. With Netflix you can rent over 90000 titles online let's Blu-ray titles with free shipping both ways your home. They now have over forty shipping centers almost all deliveries happen in just one business day. And that's what's glass at a 49 and as a new member you -- no risk two week free trial membership but to -- avid avid -- netflix.com slash iFanboy. An amber used irritable February's -- code."
" And we're back with the third one what. Okay. This is -- war by Emanuel there. That's on grounds it some for a second books and smaller book is a little bigger than the other one but again these -- books -- usual size. Right it's a different it's a really good -- on this is a re. But it's about an American GI from what we're twos -- basically the story is this is Franco Belgian. Com it's excellent so the translation. To translation but and elitist or a -- I was kidding that in Pasadena California. When World War II broke out. He joined the military. And and got shipped off to camp and ended up getting there yeah they're getting to Europe eventually. Sort of after. The bad. It's it is -- old she can't yet did on he didn't really serious action on security different sort of story then. A lot liberation story. And we're OK you've read Stephen Ambrose books you watch when the Brothers that are very heroic you know open. He's got choked up I am. In the mud like fighting Germans or or even you know the Pacific theater. This is sort of like it's driving around Europe after. Like that the -- do you have any place afterwards it's a very different kind of story of war -- Then that I think that abnormal used a lot of times you see is story where it's all the fighting and heroism and this is -- more like lake. To settle these guys in March meeting -- city market and drive -- weird it's beautiful it's it's and that's that's the the next basically the reason I wanted to talk about this book is that. Of acts are you about it somewhere -- my top ten books of 2008 were actually that because it sounds like my my kind of thing. I got I read on a plane and I got the play in the first thing Hackett think this is I was going to see these guys unfortunately. I just for the most amazing graphic novel I've read now I don't know how long. -- because it perfectly captures who this person is files -- the World War II in the end of that but also that follows -- base the rest of his life. And the way that the story work is that. -- after the war. Basically moved to France to live and he found ways you as a civilian employee of the -- But this is really sort of amazing guy and he met this cartoonist an annual. And and they became very good friends big age difference and they just hung around and talk and basically what he taped these interviews about his life. And then wrote it did the whole thing was pulled him in French. So loses -- story as an American being told to the purchase of French and now it's translated back in English. Farm and then the cartoonist went through in and illustrated the entire thing it's very it's not just a word balloons I don't think -- That's -- Cuba for the most part it's just it is a story telling exercise. And even he says and -- makes you reading introduction you read this what he explains that some of the stories don't make exact cents to go back check but I love to hear the way he told me this story is amazing is he's an amazing story -- and and it just as a person. It's really interest -- and he needs like. These. Sort of semi famous philosophers and artists that he becomes friends with him as a whole story about -- goes -- redwood forest -- general Sherman. And in the book is just all consuming and spanning it does all of these different things about this one sort of really existing person's life -- in a civil war. Not increase the big tree create. -- a tree that he's called general Charlotte. To show that support that under the biggest."
" The biggest free and it and then there's -- release -- grants while it's in the redwoods you've lived a very near the of them are just ways I've never seen any trees they."
" This is straight. This -- the this reminds me a little bit of into. Attention a little bit of -- yeah yes the whole thing is is black and white ink wash and I swear to god like. It -- line between being completely cartooning and completely photo realistic hope that some thought backgrounds expert he's definitely is supposes is mixed media soon have a school it's it's beautiful beautiful work doesn't look like anything I've ever seen in this to some of the ink wash is. Is amazing I mean I was really I was moved by it. I was you know I I'd make sure like let's look at this page look at about it books I've seen only in I mean it's it's really something special nice and and you know it's it's it would. Here's a -- Buckeyes have this kind of life anymore there you know it's in this world where everything is connected exaggerate big deals is when -- was in the forties to. Growth in America we didn't get to see you rest of the world all the time and then travel throughout Europe in the world learn all these things meet these different people on. You know the time -- through some special. So -- also it's a really neat idea about looking at what things were like. You know 3040 years ago is that. Definitely worth going to check out you can see her -- you know it's it's really gorgeous. It's really good way to sort of expand your your comment who had. -- innocent. -- Tyson's history sensitive personal stories I have been answered it for a second brilliant in his these books is and it's always great photos of infinite life get in the back yeah Indiana like -- also easy to faces. People you know it's it's very. Cool. Also so we span the globe here -- Allen's warm person and then there from de LA and runaways from marvelous -- all across such a common problem and keep you busy Nat so out of place your orders."
" So do you Asus. We're having CO USS's. Excellent middle class desolate west -- CS this is tough hole a putt at 11 o'clock is that it is books you can just email contact I -- what dot com or you can leave a hotel gate that was just 32626972. Good reference."
" Our our and other revenues less than what I com website where you can find also written content we we pick we podcasted. We review all sorts stuff like that makes you get there do that stuff."
" But they're both got a point I snap. They're going to go stressed that avoids that."
" Who's opening. Well it open in 32. -- all right scandal and video -- font book what was. Got a plus he's got lower yeah good 'cause he has there."
" Please do. 32. Hey welcome to write for the scrap."
" Yeah. --"
" Well."
" So what FEMA we don't -- all these books. After all. All -- vaguely differently sized. So it -- usual size yeah. Princess -- yes. This -- and -- fan boys brought you by. Godaddy.com.

And we're OK you've read Stephen Ambrose books you watch when the Brothers that are very heroic you know open. He's got choked up I am. In the mud like fighting Germans or or even you know the Pacific theater. This is sort of like it's driving around Europe after. To settle these guys in March meeting -- city market and drive -- weird it's beautiful it's it's and that's that's the the next basically the reason I wanted to talk about this book is that. Is amazing I mean I was really I was moved by it. I was you know I I'd make sure like let's look at this page look at about it books I've seen only in I mean it's it's really something special nice and and you know it's it's it would.
