Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon collaborated on the legendary Vertigo series, Preacher, a comic book unlike any that came before. But is it worth your time? Josh, Ron, and Conor spend a good, long while discussing the epic tale of a man on a mission to find God, and iFanboy will let you know if it lives up to all the hype.

You'd be hard pressed to find another book like Ennis and Dillon's Preacher. There's literally nothing like it before or since. But at the heart of all that, are we just looking at an old fashioned western, or is it some new synthesis of graphic fiction. Along with Sandman, there's hardly been a series from Vertigo to generate so much buzz and love among people who wouldn't normally pick of a comic book. This episode tries to solve the strange alchemy making up this most excellent comic book series.

The guys were all hooked after the first volume, Gone to Texas. After that, it's a non-stop, exciting ride to The Alamo, and the big, controversial ending.

" That bad -- podcast from the conference -- dot com I'm Connor here with. Ron and I'm Josh. We -- this little while ago and assume we're gonna go whole show on now preacher. And so -- I mean it all the way through read them all again. Economy through demo again and Enron says he's got it I think they're. We've all read yeah one of those one that's a Muslim religion he stressed -- a re read. I -- when I re read -- just recently on a whim and I was just struck by bullets. Bathtub and when preachers for right well I was struck by the fact that it was the -- the greatest thing ever so I thought we need to come here and did it department to convene and try not to distribute the disclaimer that the last was in this that's it was so we're not going to spoil much. And it okay -- yeah we're trying to do -- certain things that we can get around not saying right. Also if you're under. Eighteen or 35. About. Yeah its its not a kids book is not -- not this is for mature readers so. I didn't want perhaps the culturally sensitive but this doesn't think the appeal a decision. This song I wrote some listened on the Russell high school when it was coming on issues yet that. We weren't allowed to write yes you can -- so don't practice anyway I think he should be allowed to read. So let's let's go right it's hard to do a quick picture repeat for preacher because. If for me I think and it is unlike anything else. The basic story is. When he okay who who does it where it's from yet in the next okay this is the book may Garth -- and America. I I think it's safe to say he wrote it all sixties something -- issues 669 transference nine trades worth. Steve Dillon was a pencil on every single issue of the regular series there's some spinoffs on the -- And it came out from vertigo. Interestingly enough this -- opera comics at a time -- tonight for the -- when. Comics were just in the dumps him and so like this is like this. Phoenix that rise in the ashes of what was really almost dead dead comic book industry -- and and even more so came from vertigo which is -- DC comics who can -- previous episode. Which up to that point we're still kind of getting it's legs in him to what it was -- an -- the sandman was indicated that point. And this was unlike anything else he put out by that -- it's and that's that's Serwer restarted this is unlike anything else ever and I can't you think it. You know -- would do it this is this meets this -- this too many things what I mean and and what's a testament to this is that now in this day and -- to be like oh it's like creature with this guy and it's like become one and that is never true exactly."

" And I understand that assessment is a lot different things going on him but I I'm having read all -- in the space of about three weeks. Before to do for -- to do this and it is deeply and truly lost. -- But again today and so must."

" Absolutely -- Jesse Custer is a preacher to small town and handle Texas and he is got like a flock of like 200 and he's in the Church. And as big explosion and everybody in the Church is killed except for -- this happens in the first. -- pages of the book. On the way out of town he runs into is is ex girlfriend who has seen a long time and a guy named Cassidy who turns out to be Irish empire. Just he finds out that he had this power. The word of god where when he tells anybody anything as one of -- English. Up to do something be happier and -- and compulsively have to admit to using it might not -- all time bomb. Yes he -- like his eyes get rid of letters really understand it and he gets all intense looking at. And so he decides that. He he finds out something about god. That god -- abandon his post and he being. Basically a true western cowboy heroes says he's got to go make things right and make an answer for what -- done -- he's going to go on gun and and and and argument -- to say what do I got an order for sure about it he was -- that was -- point -- going to make -- answerable -- he's got to be responsible. And what's interesting is that is that. He a lot of people wrestle with religion and things like that -- this southern preacher and that's the thing that by getting this power -- that any -- in this universe that god exists that."

" Wall listening to yeah it's really sad that this the St. of killers Auxerre yeah I think it's important now also before getting too deep in his is that. Book called preachers not a pitcher got the character does it take some just doesn't have anything to -- for us how often. It's a real -- religious -- that's not a religious book you know it's more like thinks it's more like just these characters are fictional characters and the -- really wasn't a commentary on religion."

" None as early as you know. Well we'll just it just god and religion exists why they admitted that -- and and it's not a punishment -- do -- that's -- Jesse -- is a preacher -- is throughout the whole thing he never he never -- he doesn't lose his -- he doesn't lose his values that are associated with it you know he is he never not a creature in this book and that's important where's the caller of the whole way through that -- doesn't. Well is -- the NRC after the explosion because. Bob. There's an explosion at the end we believe that where you think it's that the -- basically to set up and that's all take care of in the first book from there. There's this giant rich story that involves world conspiracy. And espionage and just sue the over the top so it's very -- and over the public -- get some people. And what I mean this is like there's these big. Nasty things that happen."

" Very explicit it but it's done and -- it's for a topic easy humor Spacey it's funny but also it's like this is how bad this world news. And out of office because god of those polls are is because that this is -- saying that the Senate is -- in this world we say this is a really awful world work. Awful things happen. So that sort of things come out on us make our our lost more powerful because of the world Europe. But this really bloody it's really and it's all very -- seconds -- shot grab their entire school I was."

" Thinking bit though as. It's a book that goes from light hearted. To -- in in in strokes like like it'll be like at one point and we really funny you're having fun with that mainly because the main characters I think are extremely -- you want to root for them which is one of the best things he did because when things happen to those characters later that you don't. Know how you feel about. You are then put in the position to have to you understand how the other cares so security -- really like does something that you really dislike. You have to wonder. Do I approve them for the out of my mad about that -- not and I love that because that puts you in the moral gray area people were friends those care you know that what you understand what's like to be at story I think that the."

" Personalizing the characters is one that's been the whole. The whole length of the book consistency characters Garth -- is vision and how you really characters puck up left and right yet characters' true you know there there. And what and one book they're tight in their friends and they've got this you know great -- connection. Then a couple books on the road to fighting and their true each other over and then there apologizing and moving forward and it it is the wall it's kind of over the top in terms evolves and I think that was really realistic becomes important personally and that's it."

" He was -- I really related to -- this book actually emotionally affected me more than almost any other book that I can think in terms of the characters like I'd get to points and there's there's there's like. Because it's a it's a western. Everything has a little more melodramatic -- it would be in real life but -- points in the second book until the end of the world which basically until the end of the world is a love affirmation majestic tells to look as is his character. And like when he says that you -- at certain points like you that there's an emotional reaction I don't know when you -- I was like wow that's."

" That's deep you. I liked and I'd like these characters I would -- when I was reading I'm reading this book I like reading -- I can't put it down this is one of the first books. What does that mean in the trade paper format that literally like. Read the first one ran this sort of an excellent let me ask you this okay -- where did you guys when did you start reading the strategy here about why her that was issues and 94 when it came -- friend of mine who is not right hand shall we say I'm that he loved. Yeah battery less I read accurately issue through someone that I was. Isolate housing I didn't really and then several years later I think in the late nineties I bought the first trade -- your recommendation right and then it was literally like. Ready for full rant and come up what second there ran Amazon order of the rest and we all had that --"

" Yeah. I mean I don't hurt creature that I -- in -- close reading very I just wasn't so I was I never of those but. The late Dan I've seen -- wasn't. And -- gave me the first two trades Monday to work together. And he -- take some over the weekend but secretary you're going to be -- Arafat changes such as include the secretaries -- the details it. And I came back and went Monday in -- chains. Amazon I said and this is this is also the book the books have gotten into trade paperback book and I said. That's how I've outlined inclination would be to go on it and by the issues you can what you did you did it -- transfer -- Paul yes. -- kind of serious ankle deep into -- them that's she's -- you know. It's a look great and shelves all of this looked kick ass of myself and I did I ordered all line and then that's and that's -- dissent read through."

" And then to change trade -- that he'd better ones the ones. -- I was much the same actually I recognized no one's gonna hit my first -- closings have been meeting to read that -- and I bread I think the first four of them in borders now. But I didn't buy them and I'd like a John let me scifi book clubs. And I got up to the matter. Yes currently well yeah that actively he's like yeah. This you know that's. Now would like I don't like an elegant designs and I write like that it would have been much better usually -- and I didn't -- I would love that outside for most of so all the couple and yes -- sausage how did you -- did you read the book on. What's put. This was one of those experience -- could not stop reading you I can't and and it's like you stay up late at night and you finish it and and there was really no low point that say it. We talked about in the western show we did. Ancient history as a diversion. Yes at that time it slowed the sort out whether it was going to happen but now going back to read it -- really really enjoyed it."

" What this book does is if All-Star -- is testifying about it that's basically one long broad strokes yeah yep. But about it through he starts. Going back time currency mean we've we've that it sentencing Tillerson was close it killers. It was almost a whole lot on him and you find out about country and our states and his instrument but not begin to looks back story and it passes bastard test of that sort. And formation that was great because. I really wanted to get -- sort of find out how to end -- the same time I loved the filling in it and is -- anticipate deep there --"

" and they really work really well because the thing is they've been dropping hints about the characters all along and Afghanistan if you are reading this and issues I. -- guideline ears and then so when they go back and they tell you about Kat city's past capacity the Irish empire. Like it all -- for me so perfectly where like the character that he had created from issue one yet. It perfectly and do encapsulated his how he came up and and what he became. Just. And how you really the feeling he had us an idea about entire story the whole from the very beginning."

" This yeah this is I think what trades related benefitting because. It's operating has some issues and that's going to hire train on Jesse's sojourner in town hall salvation. -- probably -- gone crazy but I got seven months of it obviously didn't work but it's. As a -- and it's great -- just like thoroughbred experts are."

" That episode -- people who are reading an issue. That like this is one of the this is one of them at a concert for the finite series I think it has really been kind of the advertisement try to -- that and then like this this year is going to run what's that 66 issues that are. Yet currencies these issues that -- man ran and ended you know why less than -- and is finite kind of collections but don't people when they're command issues. Were dreading the 66 and she had never wanted to and they need to get multi preachers --"

" Second and then yes exactly yeah so it is so it does fumble. So yeah exactly exactly the thing about this that was that was reading through it I got the sense of being one complete story and I love that aisle of the plane in the -- and that in regular monthly comics Lotta time. -- Actually that in that same respect -- I thought that the pencils in the beginning of the Latin is really see Dylan's art Wichita is on his sponsors. It's it is must factor as a right absolutely is. I don't look for -- responsible like here's our account what happens artists -- people got to from a storytelling standpoint Bob I've got to say that this is. As Chris -- as -- I never was once confused on the page it's it's it's not boring it's basic. In a good way like a cowboy movie like a western so it fits in that he thought I'd want to that criticism that doing its allies that he too saw the same character yeah. I don't run out of all this happened so it's. Yeah persons in front end -- and and I do think that he put a lot would -- on the beginning now we have -- trade and a bomb deed. There's a lot more as a lot more shading and detail on things like that but it didn't. It didn't affect but. That's its first our thoughts change because the way the last in his announcement draws. Yeah yeah an end thing is that I think that you see progression -- that -- mr. attempted to what he did towards candidate but he also was able to. Its its cartoonish style but it's also it's -- That's realistic when he was able to handle both. You know the idea the other Jesse and taxes that kind of traveling the road -- kind of real world things at the same time drug -- and angels yeah and drug you know Helen -- yes yes. And it blew an it was unbelievable for -- his style is deceptively simplistic yes yeah it's very simple and then when you really look at another guy like that I think is Ryan hotly. Yeah -- where where you look at a person is seems like as of sparks has a line -- when you really look at it you see that things have weight yet and they have the shapes are aware this was his anatomy is excellent all of that stuff. It's it's it's deceptively simple and also these."

" Tuchman book where most of the time to post it just walk around talking and doing whatever normal stuff but then. There's scenes of extreme violence suspected captures -- while -- not just not just done what amounts there's like there's a lot of despite it."

" And it's funny because of this earlier in -- but I mean -- quite often this gets branded offensive. Because of the Condit causes them a lot of violence a lot of sexuality. A lot of you know kind of very. Holy (%expletive) did you see that kind of moment -- in terms -- sex but I think the deceptively simple aspect of Dylan's art. Down grades the offense is this I would and it takes a lot offended I was never offended by any of -- and because some of the ideas and cost so out there but."

" We Dylan's art drawn yet it almost balances it out somewhat yeah."

" About this is that and we talked about this being a western that says something do that there is is is to Jesse there is it is it morality. Everything that Jessie does. It's because it's the right thing to do yet and he's doing a good thing because he knows -- it as a whole book is is predicated on that -- it. Has to be the fact that whatever Jessie does Jesse there's no gray and ambiguity about -- he never does anything that's morally and ambiguous. A lot of -- around him does but he. Always has the right thing he's component is our -- write we'll write what he -- and that's that's cowboy thing there's been the white hat you know supposedly. And actually get to. Not clear that role like excited we have a lot of things -- this one of the few books finally that we call collectively -- right -- like this and and a and a reread but I can tell you did nothing but but bolster might I thought about it."

" I love them ordered and the -- I think I really think this is may be the best comic book story piece of work done in the last. Not ten years not going to turn me in public. Motherland I don't know what Matthew is untraded in all of this -- then what is it that you really love about the series. This would talk with the characters are."

" Our by the end of the book you are so intertwined newspapers last and you really terrible what there doing what they're saying what's happening -- the story is compelling in this exciting. And it there's a lot -- he he has a lot to say about the world. They're just threw just girl and really yeah. He takes a lot of hidden and there's a lot in the slot to Sam. Just the state of the world -- is -- a chaotic world -- it means to do the right thing and while house. It's really tough to do the right -- sometimes we had a good guide to easier just be to go along with everything or is -- is a guy that you really you really."

" Which story telling cracked a guy like -- yeah like next question I mean you know much that was not Texas so I am listening to appeals to -- about eleven fact that the public. Now what about you what is it that book -- I'm actually gonna be coming from a different what he likes boobs."

" I like boots now all of a oddly enough. IEA IE I've had my a had money challenges and then grips with religion."

" You know I'm I'm Italian I was raised Catholic support that actually like much of it."

" I really like religion in this story in this aspect in the way -- Hanlon. Both tying in with some of the."

" Conspiracy theories and and kind of the rumors around that there are descendants of Christ and then this whole kind of order around protecting the ground to students just exactly -- so I loved that suffers -- but then also the idea of you know like -- you've -- public accountant you know hold you accountable for it. And that ongoing mission across all my books is that's the one thread that kept me tied in and then never once. You know was was wavering on how well he get distracted sometime right nobody got with all the side I was always knew we had to do it -- act like he wasn't going to do it. But it turns out that and what I guess what I found most interesting was that is that -- while he's the world while he's a preacher and is. And it is holds -- safe. He's not like. -- know prim and proper and Mikey drinks he smokes he United like he's he's imperfect he's in perfect man and I actually lives according to his rules though yet -- liberals he's. Yet want to percent on break you know exactly but the things that I -- of religion announcement from the sun which are certainly gonna record curse could -- all right is because that was you know like it went to confesses that outside perks like. Of the focus (%expletive) it's like seriously. And like and this kind of and this kind of supported that thought it would draw that line like you know manage judge by but what he does right yeah and that's because because those who know me and you know what I live I have a strong moral code as well and I turned to the right thing -- kind of supplement. Do we in ways that people don't agree regulars like SA and a curse of the sailor exactly relocate all the time yes."

" How do you justify a BitTorrent a -- I think and for me. There's a couple of things that that that really -- struck me is that I think emotionally for the book his relationships. When you put Jesse. This isn't -- story. I don't think in my opinion -- is the main character but this is this is really a story about human fallibility and I think for me that is encompassed in on. In Cassidy into. Mostly -- for me. Cassidy is the arc of the story we want when you watch from what happens and what we learn about what happens in the end of the choice that he estimate. That's where a lot of the drama and especially near the end of the story comes from and he's a fantastic character to me because he is in the beginning. What appears to be the best friend any guy could ever had all my god this is he's fun he's loyal he's true he's -- you he's the best friend ever. And then like anything you know fuel at a later you're gonna see something ugly now did the vampire. And there's a past that goes along with that and and and and and it's pulls you both ways whether -- you see him in the worst possible -- the best possible light. And at the end you've got to make up your mind about it men and highlights the love that from a dramatic as a whole point cultural thing whereabouts."

" Ha ha ha yeah I don't even -- and a --"

" I think it read this book I think one of the main -- does that -- easy meetings redemption everybody gets a chance to redeem themselves and I don't what they've done. That is fantastic and testing whether or not you see he deserves to be redeemed not -- I advertisement to about about ten at the end."

" And usually not much about it but I -- Well that that -- into a lot of people at one of these criticisms book is the end. Which and some people -- it some people and I personally I thought that's fine you know and have a problem that. I I didn't have problems and makes perfect sense with the theme of redemption you can also read a from the very beginning that and makes perfect sense from a narrative standpoint a lot of people. I think people didn't like the ending because. I'm going to try to skirt around that yet and it'll spoil people didn't like the ending. Because it just sits weird its products I don't know if I want that to happen and I put from a story standpoint. It fits perfectly and enact just and all -- together it is a straight line from the beginning the end I asked."

" I think that's a lot here feels Indianapolis -- with -- soon enough. One of the characters actions -- goes bad. Not this is an actor -- pictures those on the that you really don't like. And the wage away his his final scene in the book. I think if you. Just -- its ability to either pay for what he's done a believed then and theme of the book is redemption yet. Enough you don't want to be redeemed humanity unhappy with him yeah but uneven and I feel I'm right next but I like -- mental detector amateur --"

" What do you know what what happens at the end it's like -- thing happens method but you know it's a western so. Here right off into the sunset the last -- people I know and that's not it like that's really that's what the end book actually is -- and then that's like you know you know that's."

" Admiral this last -- and of people dislike their work. They anticipation felt less issues in the with a payout was that the that -- that was totally satisfied and -- that was and I think part of the people who don't like the ending kind of would also if you distracted and the -- led to link would argue that they just want. -- I possibly thing is that he's the kind of tax cuts towards where I would meet up this could've gone another six she's going to 600 issues and us currencies they couldn't have. Well yeah Eminem is that if you don't really like to do the connection goes I had all the characters like I once -- want to -- and that's why."

" Had to have because the thing is that there isn't a weak point in the us and for me if they are now on issue 142 and try to think about. Right situations they can but Jesse had -- it you know you going to ruin the legacy of the whole thing what is there anything whether he'd like. Now I don't think so. I would say the weakness of -- and it's it's either you depends and I look at this look at it. One of the weaknesses that it is that the story is predicated a lot upon the idea of as -- coincidence that happens yeah he leaves the town he had. -- run into so and so -- the point he happens to meet. You know somebody who has very close to add -- like there's a lot of happenstance senate. And the thing is from the very beginning you have to -- ago that if you don't get over the you're not going to enjoy it and it doesn't tell a story book movie and -- true but but there's a world that set up in the beginning and as long as you go with that from there. I mean it's not realistic yet in that sense totally totally and any you have to it if you buy into this world you're gonna be you're gonna be just fine. The signs that I don't really."

" I personally like -- there are being get ideas are crazy (%expletive) and it's on this people on here that that people on the book that you just team. Almost if you try to explain anybody just makes no sense -- not like obsessed. And that could be seen as a as as a criticism but -- this and -- make it work somehow and you know from. Yeah sex detective to remove you know -- the religious zealots you know kind of grouping to the angels and it always happens like. It's just mind going when you read it but it just all be easy when you know you're that university throw out your preconceived notions it all --"

" We reiterate that if if you're the kind of person and not to handle angels doing cocaine. And then they'll read this because we are keeping -- design in things on the best works as a I've been published but you have to be able to allowed access to the liberals accept that. And so the other characters in fiction. There's no commentary going yeah it really doesn't make any commentary about religious -- I don't know about different types of people and how they use their belief that accepts that these angels and gotten and -- on our -- fictional work."

" There also be making that he's making -- point that that whatever the deities above us apparently they're fallible yet just like everything else that raced on humans based on them in their album differ we -- fallible. How's that going. That's not right this is not that for the politically incorrectly tended I suppose that was not a real first. Not -- use them for the you know in the shaky ground as well yes and an end you know don't give us your mom if she doesn't like seeing violence on TV you know I mean but. If you really looking for something that does comic books that like is just taking the graphic novel form. This doesn't work for me in a movie it's doesn't work for me and -- and now I know that but for me that this is. It works perfectly as a comic book and it's paste in the whole thing is just a comic book done right now."

" Now this isn't it is it's HBO -- and it's in development HBO put it on the series would you want to. They just missed I would definitely I would definitely -- Syria the idea I would but I want the but I want to talk about this right now as a work graphic fiction perfect that is that is almost perfect I can't think of anything better than this. Com if you haven't read it while I'm highly recommend you go read it again. Com. And we love it isn't really its agents -- their record and -- what's funny is that the sides all Macs and it's really good. So okay so how did you tell -- he can't but our fan preacher and want to share your thoughts or or -- accidents -- that you need also confident -- I've -- lit -- com. Or you give us a call -- wait endlessly to sixers fans and tell us thoughts on -- and if you want to try to dissuade Connor from repurchase them all because yeah to -- going to persuade you can. And our elected by -- slightly restrained. -- we'll be opposed that this episode and I'm also the revision three dot com accords let's let Campbell and this link to a forums where you can discusses the citizens of other episodes groups of them there. It's true you know clearly we're biased about the book hell's coming. All it's all kinds I can bring."

" But not -- Catholic I have no other park. -- less familiar than (%expletive) fails -- test of the school. I'm the other beautiful office listen to."

I felt you guys went a little spoiler heavy. I read the first three trades and I think by the images you provided and what you guys said I can figure whats going to happen. My library carried only the first three trades so I've been kinda screwed for a while now (still in high school with no job and gas to pay for) If Conor wants to sell me his trades for a good price, I'd love to buy .

Preacher is far too daunting. I know I'll like it, but much like 100 Bullets, I'm scared of all the volumes. I did it with Sandman and Transmet, so I'm sure I'll get around to them at some point.

It's so good that in preparation for this show I reread all nine volumes in less than a week.

I think that's the part that scares me. Paying twenty dollars for each volume and reading them in less than a week.

Well, I guess it's vertigo, so it'll probably only be 16-17. Which is still a fair bit when there's 9.
