Marvel Knights

Before Joe Quesada ran all of Marvel, he and Jimmy Palmiotti started Marvel Knights in 1998, and brought new life to the House of Ideas.
In 1998, Marvel was in the throes of bankruptcy, so they turned to two creators enjoying some success with their independent Event Comics. Marvel hired Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti to produce several titles, and Marvel Knights was born. That first wave of titles included Daredevil, Inhumans, Black Panther and Punisher. The initial line of Knights books changed everything, and eventually lead to Quesada assuming the role of Editor-In-Chief, bring that same magic to the rest of the line. They did all that, in addition to doing the art for Kevin Smith's Daredevil.
Since the initial offering of 4 comics, Marvel Knights has continued as a viable imprint, although somewhat changed. If you know The Sentry, Daredevil Yellow, Hulk Grey, Silver Surfer Requiem, Spider-Man: Reign, or Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Punisher, you know Marvel Knights.
Josh, Ron, and Conor take a trip back in time to remember what comics were like at the birth of Marvel Knights, and about the impact that is still felt in comics today.

We're seeing him in series. -- We wanted to take some time to talk about -- lights and what is -- I'm actually going to. These guys they are good friends their own shackles. It has a lot to do with how -- is today I think and then for us these this were real turning point I think in in comics and Marvel Comics especially. So I wanna view want to start by talking about what it was like. That was in the trenches I was there I was well."
" Normal that we talked about previous episodes and not in the notes lover on the Marvel Comics and a bit of a financial problem and in the mid to late nineties the bottom fell out on the phone industry. There's some shady deals going on some. Tycoons fight argued over assets. Hero world. But what happened was that are always wanted to -- parliament. And -- into bankruptcy. " Is it just wasn't trying every book possible if Thompson. I'll be -- Michael Jordan arrests and yet it's a great coach. This is so Phil Jackson actually is an excellent coach rivers and habitable -- got Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant again anyway so I'll move. So that's right 1987 and -- Marmol wasn't it and mess up their own little -- its greatness like Marco and yeah America that was just adjacent room table there was little love -- part got good quality was not good consistent quality and was also not to -- we're we're talking. In the middle spinal clone. -- The other thing is exactly what they're trying to keep one foot in the past and once we're going forward and so like at the same time that that you had daredevil won come out. Spider-Man chapter one by John -- it come out which was. Are horrific step back it's yeah but it stalled at the time. I hardly anymore -- visit Jordan type of books in -- had apprehended. As closely."
" And actually had to have some talent in and Marley and -- innocent and -- fossil bones about it restaurants suffered through a lot of us. At the same time -- on energy policy on where some -- They had both work from normal and early nineties which in DC two. -- bad -- armor it's real bad aspects. And then because a lot of products factors. He's got a Julia it is that I sector -- this -- valiant. Network Valentine. One and by this in the late nineties he injured his partners and hug Pollyanna losing team we're doing a net comics. They're not actually a member of congress right. And public -- ironic self edit. They had and then we're seeing a lot of in the book's successes a town called ash which is about all over the place -- yeah. Kids in Atlanta publishes and what they're doing is they're taking the same kind of approach in which -- where they. There are using advanced color you really high quality paper you know making a really good common product. And they they -- policy that there was a lot of Muslims. And then somehow. They were able to strike a deal Marmol to say hey let us take our studio Pharmacia. And give us a couple titles are some very well. And let us -- let us -- this must which hadn't. And been done it was the first time ever -- Christian minister to outsource a a single comic lets lets multiple comics to another -- On the giddiness in the first four titles they -- them more all underperforming or -- tells us time and -- and -- just it was canceled 23 years before. You had daredevil is on which is on the verge of cancellation and come. Rock -- armor and fellow -- In humans which never never had never had a problem and fourth one loses Santa black -- who that in -- have a vote a right. --"
" So they they took these and they said let we're gonna get. Huge people to work on them and of course they're big get was Kevin Smith threatened daredevil who would get on my caddie Kevin Smith well this is it coming off funds cheesy yeah yeah I mean there is he was actually a star -- I get behind people besides college kids knew we was it was a big deal. They got that we'll Jones-Drew defenses on that he's he's fought back against all the useful -- from -- point -- regularly -- Paul Jenkins and Chris are recent and marketshare on on black panther and well we won't talk whether money. Suppose we've talked about that punishes police couple months. But again that was for Verizon's. Oh yeah some. Did that button this up tomorrow might -- It's funny that we really do remember the books that are great and I think that the first one that really stands out everything tomorrow like a veritable. We have -- and even before Levy's apartment and is it. They even visually the whole line so visually look different than what was happening and it's always it was a step forward in ahead Tom cover treatment every -- I don't know --"
" I'm saying is it was written so -- been hit so the names it was a philosophy behind. What what marvel I think forgot what is you have to have good people on your books and you can't just solve problems well covered he can't sell them -- with. Gimmicks you have to put quality artists on the books. And they do that it took to put it took appropriate people you know you take the right guys write books put among those books and they made people it's."
" Did about the the creator coming first on the vertical model of of like these are really talented people telling stories that these characters. And you know that the enthusiasm -- on the pages cities and they didn't admissions policy making comments that yeah. Need to constantly. That whatever the formal -- wasn't enough you know cultural products that what is largely in this is like and a we're to make really good we're -- comics that we're really proud of not just not just African -- box that. Decision on beloved Paris London. And perhaps -- I had Kevin -- daredevil much fanfare and I -- I remember this very fondly I remember reading this is just thinking. I've never read a comic book that that looked this good -- that was this much fun to read it. It was and it was by somebody liked our of the -- dean store and were all there were we were we on the real it's about the college. -- thin and it also that they had an adult terror sensibility I suppose it's so amazing when you say amateur don't -- dodi's. Porno but it's not that it but it was short -- book yet they'll win you know like issues. Religious. Religion and and infidelity and and you know Karen page comes back she has beaten because she was. -- And and heroin addicted and then -- he cheats on his girlfriend and gets caught in it because of the demon. Who was masquerading as a woman -- all of this plot going on. Hum but almost think that going back to what I remember is the visual look of it these pages or so then packed and and good shot it's got this really interesting combination of his own style which was sort of like a little -- image. And like Todd MacFarlane sounded also -- some of the sort of Frank Miller daredevil kind of things has lots of blacks in this raining all the time -- is very -- cartoonish yes he had put it in a good way. I know what I went back and read them. On they're really worried yes he said Kevin Smith isn't letting on the words now that he's never you never will know though now. However like being I exposing more -- common we're Granada had a harder time getting through and it was a little much like there'd be pages there's a page where. The old some old -- the mustache comes explained and there's a baby and it is like too much plot press had time to explain yes and like to pay agrees explaining what's really isn't people are. It really sounds this is a lot there and a lot of times it's he wrote the fist so and he had an assist us say things that like the girlfriend from clerks what's yeah. You know like get back in action it's hot and I can pick it out now at the time it was very exciting. This is also when Kevin Smith got known for copying -- to finish books on time. Was little yeah. I don't know we'll know for five would like the last. Few of them not being a journalist and a solid -- that is a there was a big delay between five and seven are and that remember when but that was because that was only. Eight he -- issues. And and I think given Mac tip over. Yeah well and it was a weird though no there was Bob yeah all right and then and then release -- and didn't match and then -- and then that led to Brian and this. Which is gonna still going to switches through matrix our hearts and that's what happens eventually. -- there is not. Sort of as good as our government of the time. It was exactly what I want to answer you know on a night it was the time this was this is great great comic."
" Our preview could she marry her twenty or 21 and and that's thats what. What can express that point too -- and convertibles they would isn't as it was maligned character who will new members have Melissa closed at that time I was leaned a couple of and all through. -- who wrote -- And effect he wrote -- shootaround dominate on our dividend agent was politically correct those anyway I've read it long enough availability -- the body types you have no right. And they were kind of like enthusiasm -- them."
" But it wouldn't what his did that was it took you know everything was -- Frank Miller stuff and and and all that it's set up the character who still. Today and -- I'm pretty latest live there is a straight line one thing this did for me was and I know that. I had been reading when Frank Miller did his books -- show. Bulls I was not the character that I knew terribly well nests in this is where I first met yet -- bullseye and it and if I've read frank malicious intent and it -- and he kills a -- with his teeth I mean it's just. It's -- yeah -- mom -- was probably not the best Telecom on the list -- one titled your -- homeless and recover and after the break."

" So what we're gonna look them up and turns that you're right. Who Kevin Smith's run under almost Clinton played by the way it's usually dollar matter other well I mean because like you know some -- of the civil war -- I mean I think that's universal -- the -- college delays and started. Yeah with the Internet with that that wasn't as you know -- you know some -- the lady just didn't care really go to movies and having fun near the end days. As an artist is takes -- Ahmadinejad he's action at that point I."
" See his big Clinton thing was how shocking image let's just never came out like yeah now. Credited him with me more. -- sometimes -- saint -- but so someone like six yet another -- by a team called Clinton's unfortunately do it."
" It's apology and have been doing Hellblazer -- before this common so is not your typical model I can you see a lot of crossover now but again again. You didn't that I guess another do who did you know and -- game and wasn't going to do marvel books does. But of course now he does. Sometimes. Inhuman number one. I don't remember -- in human before this I think like it was causing the guys I just interstate for whatever reason. But this is size twelve -- him maxi series. Which shot today and to this day still one of my favorite series it's sort of twelve perfect issues of this really interesting. Society won't. Within society today that they didn't humans have this little quote closed -- group and not humans there there in humans and they have their own ways and -- live beneath the protective bubble and on Atlantis at this point it's something they moved to the blue area of the moon later report. Better yet that someday they came from Jack Kirby and -- fantastic four and you don't want to do a series with the they never got to what this is is that humans. Some humans decide to attack. The in humans because they don't know what's what's what's -- mysteriously don't know anything about it they won't -- you know with us so let's blow -- mom and and black holds thing of course is black -- has the above the voice of bomb -- station -- in case -- can't say anything and the whole. Theme for the whole thing is he's he's not doing anything he's saying he's just this hold them off we're not it is sad that."
" But you know what I'm glad this is what is maxis. His brother and it was the -- uses this is crazy brother. They keep locked up. But. That. --"
" each issue sort of explored different thing like like the beginning this is introductory is sort of you get to know black -- a little bit and then. -- later she explores how do you know when they in human children get. Puberty basically they go to get exposed to detergent mess which unlock their genetic power and and what that means and it's -- If you expose the children and right now. -- and it's about. It's and it's meant at its metaphor here for -- actually -- select. The girl comes out and she's got all green scaly skin and you thinks she's going to be unhappy about it she's thrilled she has wings also -- the -- supplier. And it's it's -- also society of -- so there's the people who used work machines and everything the -- out of Providence. And it's just this really interesting exploration of stuff and then it but it's also family because the royal family are all in on this car -- Yet -- Dorgan and and and they've all got there there are things going on and."
" It's an incidental politics don't look you know it is it was a really good. I can't axle work well but -- by -- has flat on another series yes I'm not sure how might have nothing is. I don't think anybody's been able to do this as well this. Did these aren't as -- as the pinnacle not only. It was Jenkins and those that is the best thing I've ever in the Paul Jenkins ever does the best thing ever in the -- he's ever done to me you know I don't -- conduct -- it was cool but it's not what -- into -- so. And I've read the first stuff and it was -- his art is beautiful but it is hard for -- to get into -- it's not -- so much. So he hasn't really done anything since then I've been able to get into an -- looks for have been waiting for that -- project and I love but then there's literally is not a moment of this that is an amazing -- and it's still that good so the First -- in the -- and -- reproductive publisher -- candidate is still still going -- basically like there is Christian -- at a very long run. Based on that -- the great taxes. And yet teach. Us really yeah I've I've read I've read a couple of them. It's funny because -- it has like the black panther has as an ambassador to what you going or New York trying to solve a crime. And it's kind of funny and it's kind of modern and it's the are working interest and -- here art. And I'm seeing it look like it but it went on for a long time and and it's it's a very critically lauded the critical nobody bought books yeah."
" And this is exit music and books malt that you know undergoes successful -- before. Well it looks hidden somewhere well you know like and and -- how the influence of doing his books had on them after the initial force for books say they -- you know these are about more titles. On the net that led us part -- is controversy Dylan -- just talk about punish it's this problem you know and in this capture all here. -- but which is Monday best that yes -- did redefining the -- who does that work and I was."
" I was so excited that the Jenkins and Julie were going to get back together to do. -- a book a new book about a new character called the sentry. Won't do -- little character if you hit whatever if you've listen to our audio show or you've heard us talk about where you're not terribly big fans of the -- I read this it's a gorgeous book again. It's it's wasn't good deferred to be."
" All have to get records as Lewis is kind of when things soured slightly what Muscovites is that the gimmick was. Here's turn of the century he was created by Stanley. Millions never used to make that -- discovered him in the."
" Vault from the marble falls well there's an interview with the Stanley in the back of otherwise we learned earlier this year Stanley has quite get this -- it's. The character of the century which is and a fairly new characters marble with the century century. Yellow -- blown back. With some equity alcohol campaign it was it was it magazine in cahoots with it everybody claiming that he lost -- at least. And it it reaches into -- and then -- got it was just awful. You don't want it to me it wasn't even now hold that point is a grand experiment that I think didn't necessarily work I really applaud the that is checked -- and attend these cats. The media -- to shoehorn into the history in some of the things I think that where it went sour for me was I don't mind that they try to it's always good trying to think what went wrong for me is that. He's still around themselves off and I think it back to the problem like this I. I can't fault them for trying I think and you know doesn't work doesn't work but like the fact he's like on the new -- still. It's weird but then maybe somebody out there likes. -- all the predators and it can't fault them for traction Poland over everybody. Patent for force something into history history should be a broken."
" Yeah I agree I totally yeah. I hated center but now. So I saw as this -- he cannot 2000 so innocence the more Muslims have been around for a few years at this point. And and kind of change happens in and as the news earlier Bob Harris believes it and she posts wouldn't miss the most horrible thing about the whole thing is that Bob -- makes this decision this landmark visit them and let these guys moment that you might call his awe and what look what happens they took it so I'm. Atrocious job bill Dennis becomes publisher Marvel Comics the whole finance them -- that way about Arizona. Jokes on us like that president and chief and basically what their approach tomorrow let's begin to approach to the entire."
" On the line which you're seeing today you know an end and -- hired great talent put put great artist -- keep the quality of the production really high you know there's all sorts of other tomorrow -- serious mountain. Black widow. You know gorgeous looking stuff about it and Jimmy did fantastic for went through -- Grant Morrison writing and and marvel marvel marvel boy I Grant Morrison JG Jones yet he's all these beautiful you know like memorable things that actually a lot of them are hard to find is -- You -- and we usual he didn't marveled reprint all their stuff in -- times."
" related -- if you -- model looks now on record high quality of writing an account of all people doing books and -- bought and -- Paper it's all because of us that have visited this -- to fly to the floppy a bid books became accompanied plus it and it really tomorrow that people might not. Who came in later -- soccer team in the nineties and inequality of the product and the and we just not good but now he missed because it was -- difficult to develop grief exotic gifts. -- you do you -- you have to respect as -- yellow -- like now because what he did with."
" Martin and at the time that he was doing and they were also is pencil in the book to become nice -- all of the stuff in the life is anything they did okay. All of a letter to the truth she effort. And let what was really is things that sows excitement and energy and you can look at that point all the whole you know marvel knights won't go away. But it didn't get to Iran and drew and -- I would have after that."

" You and Joe did marvel -- together and I really like do you do you get the sense of like that changed a lot of what came after it I -- I think it changed everything in the came after because. If you look at the books before marvel knights the coloring wasn't as good the stories were a little different lists you know intense and com I think Iowa and saying this I'm sure there isn't a lot of stuff going on and I don't realize but we weren't. The attitude of event comics incident marvel knights wear. Let's paper better colors let's get the right right there. But the right character is it not just put it guy that we have on the contract to write that book so we kind of Kevin Smith on that level would mean Joe made sense. Christopher priest and -- sun but that the meets its Dalian Jenkins. That's what I was -- the best thing ever humans thanks and it made sense that we started looking at the books like -- the -- this thing. What would match up markedly -- brought in Steve Dillon on punish you know it makes sense so we we kind of bomb. Brought that sensibility and I think now you know -- show's been I think we just changed a lot of the way marvels. -- were done now all the books they can't have marvel -- anymore because everybody became marvel knights in a weird way. And you know I let that did that I was at two years. When I finally saw that I did everything -- today right now that this and I time meeting go on to something out and Joe. When its editor in chief so it was a perfect. It was really perfect time -- ago we were I think we've really made a difference. With the company retains a lot of things anything good things came out of it."
" Sitting in her model like -- still around. And it's it's a little different now and in early 2006. We'll look at him before that -- would dismiss this I think it shouldn't take 83 evolution accessed. When it started it was in continuity stories focusing on these kind of offbeat characters and then because these are very. Energy to keep marvelous -- the second half days still still in -- comedy but kind of vanity projects I'm Mark Miller is fine and that project. Or are on the Mac trucks miniseries. That Peter David. Norris was an opportunity to tell stories of these characters that -- still continuity but worry a little being half a little outside of the box and get more cliches become part of exactly but then the real evolution Genesis."
" When when -- initially said -- and all of the ongoing series are going to move tomorrow early universe property. Proper and and everything happens within. Marvel knights are going to be. Limited and limited edition or miniseries but there ever green properties things that can that dark in continuity can sort of live forever and from that you get. All the color titles the Jeff slogans and sales vitamin blue daredevil yellow hole for a -- Are quite useful. That's America white other things -- in rain -- Andrews."
" The receiver programs and by the Hinske check America. The chosen they're chosen correctly yeah -- with some extra -- present the -- and that. We got a lot of arguments to bridge is right around the time that happened I finally waded that was the mower would as a -- incentives Alyssa for requiem to solicit for him. Pessimism nine. And in some ways isn't continuity or not. These -- not continuity but -- standalone stores steeped in the did. These these. Cat her right so there's missiles definitely next step American child pretty good luck in the -- ever win. What was the wanna do this fire and rain but can just get the Dark Knight responded via an independently rest nice looking. At this very excellent Internet. But some neat stuff comes adamant that that's opportunity to do something a little different you were you were describing it somewhere between."
" It's like between marvel universe and marvel Mac. Acts max's head adult comics at all costs -- but but you know it's sort of existence has its funny because they actually found a way for marvel -- to keep going. Because they as well because I was was you know editor in chief and everything there was much been in fort because these are. They're not mature comics necessarily that are swearing in of their you know all sorts of gruesome (%expletive) but them more than operatives. Know that now. Yeah that's hard. -- it took pretty goofy. Commitment time to."
" So I mean it's great it's a great achievement and let me -- it to change the taste normal in the end and had patiently for exercise rain has some energy which didn't. Despite one more day has been a great. It's been a great Redmond and he's he's great energy to the end is -- some kind of steered the company in the right jobs in the sales numbers if you like what -- Not pregnant and this is another I don't. Different how often do you she's finished up. Him and he just didn't I could -- that are wrong. So so there's normal excited that you like that we didn't talk about I think she's an email continent and but I -- policy meeting Bartlett's -- is an editor."
" He gives -- call 18 and was registered to sixers expect that we can tell you write books or. Whatever. As always if you're watching this you your -- went revisions are not -- class -- iFanboy dot com. We can comment on this you can look at all the other stuff we have going on -- the audio podcast. And all sorts of great things that we put their every single day. And there's. There's a show in the -- send me to excesses have consensus about stances you know that the volume -- the --"
" It's -- CNN. But you read TV yeah."
" It's just gonna watch some but. Hello hello should I got a dog just rotate rotate us. And we can't not that at the awesome. We -- regulators. Talk some and three."
" War. Visit the sort of -- brought to you by godaddy.com. And netflix.com. So it's been ten years since my lights. -- a gallon. On long black panther you. On going to obviously. We're seeing him in series. -- We wanted to take some time to talk about -- lights and what is -- I'm actually going to. These guys they are good friends their own shackles.
" But it wouldn't what his did that was it took you know everything was -- Frank Miller stuff and and and all that it's set up the character who still.

Hey guys, long time listener, first time poster.
Also my first video episode of Ifanboy.
Really fun to hear you guys talk about the marvel knights line as it paved the way for the comics that got me into comicbooks in the first place, such as morrisons xmen bendis's daredevil.
And now I'm off to download the previous 106 video episodes... give your sympathy to my poor aching hard drive :p

Great show as usual guys HOWEVER one complaint.
Come on, how can you even hint at Phil Jackson not being an all-time great coach???!!
Did he have Jordan, Kobe, and Shaq. Yes. Yes. And. Yes. But basketball is a team sport, one or even two players can not guarantee you anything; just look at Team USA Basketball before they got their shit back together in 2008. Plenty of coaches have had great players and done nothing, but Jackson on the other hand has NINE rings.
ZEN MASTER FTW.
See you guys in NYC!

Enjoyed the show but a suggestion for future, similarly themed, episodes.
Add some context. When the point is that a line of books was different than what had come before and changed everything, it would be nice to see examples of what was then the status quo. A couple of covers and loglines about their stories would set the stage. The artwork that was shown looked great but it looked like a modern book - which was the point. But that keep us from seeing what it changed from.

Yeah that is a great point. Most of those books look like they could of come out this year.
Great job, love me some MK even today.

I was digging around in an old box last year as I was coming back to comics, and I blew through a few years worth of Spider-Man and X-Men from the late 90s... and sweet mother of god, it's like night and day. I'd never read the early Daredevil Knights run until recently, but I can't imagine that those books were coming out concomitantly to the sagging flagship titles. That's just embarrassing.
