Miracleman

There is perhaps, no more storied out of print work than Alan Moore's Miracleman. But that doesn't stop iFanboy.
It's some of the earliest known work from comics superstar Alan Moore. But due to a complicated morass of rights complications and conflict, Miracleman (or Marvelman as it was originally known) hasn't been available to comics readers for years. A complete collection of 24 issues will cost you plenty.
But is it worth it? Josh, Ron, and Conor read Miracleman, and tell you what it's about, and if it's worth all the hype. The series contains early work from Alan Moore, sure, but also Garry Leach, Alan Davis, Rick Veitch, Jon Tottleben, Mark Buckingham, and even Neil Gaiman, who took over writing with issue #17. Plus, who is the mysterious Chuck Beckum?

" All this is it any sort of if you think okay if you think okay. Miracle man marble man British comic captain marvel -- comics DC comics Marvel Comics Alan -- real game in. And if you look at the legal document and somehow Todd McFarland is there."
" His everybody has never touched his book's claims ownership of the characters on the right including Rick anglos as universal in the first place a couple of footage that was about eight years or so ago this bubbled up again because topic -- got."
" I don't follow Todd -- claims who purchased the rights of the character from a clips -- and by the way we have a history of getting the facts wrong so I. I don't wanna know is and I'm not a lawyer I haven't read -- leave the litigation in this is all of wall."
" I don't profane offensive when is that here's a here's how was stuffed into his he had Cabrera doesn't -- Harland and everything. Everybody excited because suddenly the rumors abound that the rights have been cleared up. First -- Clinton and someone very similar miracle Mets and appearing in one minute of miracles bond."
" Yes -- say his character whose looks kind of let me miracle man -- in their polls appearing it's fun. Todd McFarland you know whatever puts out a statue of miracle man let's solicit it all and end and -- the other thoughts is that he -- to gain an advantage --"
" The same time in the room was marble had got the rights they're -- or terminate the marble man. And reprint all these books again everybody got excited because again. The most useful that no one's right right so then it about a year that suddenly it did what I don't know I don't."
" And and started up a benefit to earn money than any ripples of marvel half. So -- it sixteen to use yours is actually done to to find the right company and it in the if you read the you the inscription it's it's like to stand gently steered millions dedicated the -- there is an end to -- from making all -- I think it's a big fight between all these people claim -- it. " But Saudi artist -- a piece of how they. And have a piece of it like everybody's got -- what to be."
" It's just the toll -- and the thing is that like why is everyone so why why why is it such an issue is because it's a good. -- I feel at this point it's like because he can't get it but now think the quest for just get it and so that the real question for us is it that that's that's fellas but we -- Somehow we got our hands on how we got a sad thing is that you can do it I mean that you -- cons you really work hard you can buy packages of."
" Seven reputation -- hate it might not -- so now she's had a hard fines that you can't find them. I expected Washington to sixteen and Barrymore is wrong and here we've got is she's the one to thirteen so it's possible it is possible -- yet so we did read it yes I was so let's let's. Actually talk about that the thing itself well to it after the break exactly."

" Miracle man number one featured is written -- more with our our Gary Beach and really interesting that it if you look at some of the artists work on it. Early Allen Davis worked with yet guaranteed to Allen Davis he got better yet yeah nobody still seem to -- you know you -- it's really using. So watch a lot of these guys. Where they started -- out more. All these people -- racist hatred and spiritual seed early work so if we get into the story you know we mentioned how you know Mike Moran discovers that he's actually miracle man and and and they also come flooding back to and before I ever read this like in my as a -- of the comptroller's loose tongues or governments -- that I know you'll never get to read it. Biology and we're gonna spoil and casino -- recent -- We gave us the memory about lets you know the villain is his -- there and I was like -- home which is in the second actionable that's my that's appointments -- finally got my hands and then and I knew what did the review was kinda gets reveal what in the second issue. That's the files quick. Let let's let's go to going to be a long drawn out thing everybody's about but he's not a out of mr. what I thought was funny is that the point that was thought to -- that was -- was revealing who the villain was and instantaneously. Some more than a comic store right now and this. But it isn't very funny introduction to -- But -- that's -- the village is indeed the youngest victim miracle man who turns what that was 1963 that was indeed. Exploded and shot and a mom at the miracle -- an -- side but for some news Mike -- by we will find out what happened to figure that none of this would -- weakness is definitely should -- well. Yeah that use a lot of Reading. For how he."
" This is actually it was I think it's really amazing about it is on the first sixty she's the ones that are are. On reprinted from warrior and they are not the same silent comic that you might be used to -- a lot of words. And in the end and very likely late litter it's very small lettering it actually sort of difficult to read well they were it's a different sides yeah some warriors didn't comment right. -- It's it's actually sort of a challenge to get through I'll be honest Alan Moore was not a good. As he is now he spends a lot more time -- around and can be flowery with language as opposed to just tell the story getting on with -- saw a little later she saw -- up there. Absolutely yeah."
" That's that's -- because by the later issues it's stimulating he'd been working on watchman and looking on other -- this point to a lot of space and time between when these issues were made when you know you've got to see them. You know the first bit of it is is. Basically it's taking this the super hero -- In a completely different direction the idea is that. You find out that aliens were discovered by doctor -- there guns up and there. Technology that he stole it from them was the idea the ability to replace a body with a different bodies so is the way that you would change your clothes they change bodies. So decree took the you know these these superhero characters and he. He you know miracle man is actually different than Mike Moran doesn't change -- bodies which is place in the other one goes in the some ethereal prospect closet somewhere. And that creates all of these dramatic tensions in his actual life the idea that like his wife. Is is wins. Miracle man but that's not actually the person that she married man. And an emotional conflict that goes on this is the beginnings of those things Alan -- start explore. What these -- actually mean in a real world this is when they see deconstruction editor or post modern comic books it's a different idea about it is."
" Very realistic take on this fantastic idea yeah body switching all accounts and -- or she gets pregnant. But it's not what might it would miracle man this is Mike could get pregnant before and it. Ortiz and you know eventually might might just says. And Mike's shall be forty year old do journalism -- get -- all the journalists and eventually he just says. And that is up. There's that you only -- merit comment from then on and and really like get the point of the story as the sentence of this character to his natural position as a god into. Com of the Clinton but then that's jumping ahead though because it is because if you look at."
" Early issues like I and that -- reading of it was that I read the whole while moron -- a couple of couple and union issues. And I really enjoyed the early part of it much -- partner -- and we in talk totally department is that the army says the early part of it was -- government is your command. Finding out how he became -- why you came here from and the idea that doctor gardens. You know. Basically program -- in the kids' minds to make -- think they were superheroes can open cockamamie story of this guy episode powers finally says -- working -- and -- all that in integrating all of the fifties and stories that happened were all just in the mind exactly exactly which I thought was fascinating and in great take on it and I think that was you know it really -- than. You know miracle man knocks up Mike's wife and I like that tension and all -- and then it just -- more weird."
" From that scene out of the differences from me after the first I found for sixty actually very difficult to read and I I wasn't really enjoying them all that much it is interesting ideas and things but. It was kind of difficult to wade through. On and then -- basically. And the background by the way because you -- can miracle man. In the time he got out I guess somehow and he has been using his powers to build a corporate."
" Yeah he never switched back to make it right next president atomic bomb destruction it's is that you -- axles Hitler comment and his powers. But no identity says it harvests are scratching bills and that he can do everything you want but he still had that basic conscience of a child he. It turned into an evil evil person because he's only about the is about what I want and he -- of the government's back is on the solutions to -- Right now and ends that say they they put. The they he gets in the kid finally says their romance which is -- Mac and and he gets put into likes the care. Where he's constantly tormented and always has that that that the temptation and senior command and I decided and sent it right right in the argument that -- he's -- then event you know the things obviously he's finally getting around when he does. He kills 40000 people destroys London in the most graphic things I -- we've ever seen in a severe comic book well. Assault way we're gonna get there yeah. Violation number. If before we get us a sudden."
" And that ends of that disaster kind of launches the second part of the story which involves miracle man and a miracle woman or merely fine there's a miracle woman there. And they basically decided to remake. Our society without -- aliens and rebuild -- idea right and get rid of money get rid of crime you do not like that part yet and I like it but that's when it got -- it's."
" To me I'm there. On the first secure a lot of the road went toward the most of the -- did her parents about that Axl walking."
" Yeah and plus also -- like I like Mike and I liked his life and she went nuts after the may be in the end you know insulated -- I thought was it like. He did this great stuff and then just kind of all broke it down and then it's and the first -- of felt very in the future --"
" Very typical. -- but good. Go to -- yeah replicate it time uses -- yes there might have been but I I love the idea of taking all of this to its logical conclusion if there is Superman what would actually happen. And they decide you know what as opposed to Superman says we have to look and to think he says. Let's fix this ship and and that's what he does."
" Yeah look I loved it isn't point where they're presenting a plan to be for the prime minister and in this they have will first need to lost. And as brutally yet and Margaret -- is premise and some of them that's possible -- that we we won't allow it -- the senator went on a hour trip yes you know anybody for third place."
" That he becomes a fashion yeah it it becomes a fascist government argument people who we call fast. Anyway -- And and I like that stuff because it that's when you really world building you're saying let's do something else let's figure out how it works how the world works with this there's no money left. There's no problems with food or pollution or any of those things yeah but there are still problems and how is that how is that done. One of the things that -- understand is that on the artists on needs. You start off you got to release its first two who actually like that stuff is very nice that -- does the next at this time. -- of the governor. Arms around it that's an and I really like his stuff as much silent on this yeah and and that's fine. After that get got except back up a little research we'll tell you that this guy took Beckham who really it's the weakest are the whole thing. Somebody might no extra cost. And got them here. Took spoke Austin the if we -- art yeah that's for net. And it's it's quite clear that it's it's not up to snuff the rest of it repeats in the birth the right -- shows up for issue number nine yeah shipment on the that he should have done anything that that's. I'm sorry mom. Picking Jones -- were in constant more and he knows this and I doubt that ship apparently he has a broker. HM are not as the birth issue that's what's called earth and and it is a little warning on the topic you got was honored for example of this issue in the morning. Attention parents contain -- graphics and childbirth. Elmore said hey what do we just do book. About babies being born. -- And it really is surprises you because I. I asked who've been a crowning yet. Yeah Americo life yeah. You can't know it's really interest -- because you think about what Alan -- career became later -- the for the first time you read from hell. And all of a sudden stuff gets really graphic you know where it's come from its. This and then and then like later you just lost girls like. Yes back to this guy's career -- the -- least pushing. What what is what can be done with comic books and what's acceptable about it so Rick -- comes on -- are we here it is like is billion times better and then after that. John probably comes on job title menu you will note you have around swamp thing yet and it is. -- out there and its -- That that artwork is is stunning in in very fantasy reluctantly does that the issue with Merriman dance border yet -- the days are played in the Lance Moore. It gets to be very ethereal or entry page spreads yes yeah it is a lot more philosophical as opposed to action stuff yet. It's a business or is that miracle man or woman are. The odds beat you got there the king queen of the world him you know it and and they -- making everything there -- giant. Four mile high pyramid that they set up outside of London. Com and in the world losing utopia so could be said that it would end at sixteen I could you could -- Eckstein. And stop there. But that is not where it's -- to -- will finish up after this."

" I found more resolve that he he pushed his it young writer Nina demon came along he's at -- you take this and it and here's the rights and good luck with all that. About what had a good -- good that it's a I thought well all apparently the -- more saw the writing on the wall for that I think and and it behind it is only part."
" Damon takes over from a period. After this fascist. Utopia is set up. And he's planning to do a series of three books. The golden age silver rich and dark age. You make it. -- him and and mark -- him to the majority of the art mart parking him most of you know from drawing fables. It's a completely different style but the same there's a story telling is there. And and it's it's a very different book from what -- more."
" Not I've read Moses are more ones I've always going to be one -- so. Get what is given story about because it ends this is the dark and what is sort of."
" Well the idea being that the three ages the golden age is like to -- after. They've taken over how does this affect people who live in the world. There's one issue about a a pilgrimage to the top of the pyramid that people make so they can pass -- That they can ask miracle man for favor. And it's it's it's very. It's it's very fantasy based I guess it's it's not very sent Austria stolen you know you saw I saw the origins bluntly on new. Yeah but I really felt like salmon was more on. There was a straightforward story underneath -- stuff and these were almost vignettes of things that were happening and -- one point eight where they bring back our guns up. And they'd sort of do what they make your best friends with a with a Andy Warhol robot."
" And you think they sort of figure out what he's gonna be trying to make his."
" It was a lot of things and and and mores were on the date they added an alien -- the ability to people who died within eighteen months back from the time to bring back there amnesty guest you know."
" And then -- could build a new body into an ever so what the thing as the guard on there was a GIG gigantic genius except he was also without morality and an evil. And so they relate to try to fix it they're trying to make a better one this really gets in the enviable how much stuff can you change about people can you do. Another from the miracle man had done with the people he said people can have babies -- pregnant you. Sperm cult leader it is that what -- sums of god not all religions become. Sex to women -- sex and the idea of sex becomes completely different. The world like the utopian values. And the people who are against the miracle man. -- ever seen. Are like fundamentalist Christians of fundamentalists is like in -- they're trying to fight back and really have the ability you that it's foreign policy so that the -- part is about. That early bit of it still rages like after people have been used to for 1015 years and they get up to 2003."
" The original -- get right back space tourist thing. And then and then presumably a third. Act would have been the downfall of this stuff I guess. We will we will never know. Give crystal says he wants to the store next to -- effort and how is. So get united -- I say this is additionally four point four is absolutely -- has eclipsed that of his sense -- calm and 25 has been drawn it's been written it it. -- the color yet there it wherever right now. Did you hide -- an assault on here."
" I actually had forgotten that. Unless I honestly market until it became the statistics say you know the rest of miracle man is I would publishing them -- I didn't -- and it's actually fun yes that's that's -- Vehicle that promise I'm gonna be a miracle that I'm assuming that -- from number nine yes berth yet and it had figured out."
" Ameliorated -- so I mean I think I think it's definitely an important work and it's a shame that at stake there's no let me show on the bus and then the -- and he she get the sense that if it is actually released that a lot of comic strip -- any sort of like. Well it's going to be it's going to be -- what -- for years and in the Washington that it was Lee a overrated or intimidating or -- attendant at the same country. And what the thing is it's not it's not as good as watchman met because hey if you know watching did as one complete coherent piece this was done in chunks over a long period of time. Then -- like this and simply hadn't learned but it I think from a historical standpoint -- where was the time period where it wasn't in. In his his rise in his career but that I think it. There is yes and it is is only one of the most most important works of east war that grew on me very much as I read through it."
" Com but it would be one horrific came out people would definitely run out for the trade and at least half ago this awful and people that do this. And yet but mostly it's because of the hype because they're -- to consider it so legendary so because of the fact that it's not available and lets you track and -- down. That -- grown people's minds in the -- probably grown too much."
" You know it's funny is like we we give you a lot plot points talked about a lot things and it. But it really is very much about the experience about the words contained in and and and what he's saying not about what happens on and that's really important and you think."
" XE early artisans working out their voice sorting out their veto power and that you'll that -- a lot of stuff in lot of good stuff. So you've read it and you have an opinion that does differ from ours or whatever and needles or continent and -- com or -- and offer mine for 25 -- That page is a takeoff receiving -- call -- ferry was 3262697."
" I get -- dot com discussed the book discuss everything else that was cites a great website that we make and we want you go and make sure that you take advantage of all the stuff we put up there. Especially if you've read it but here -- also -- Sony's issues no evil master I don't I don't believes that after a period. He looked up."
" War."
" Can go to."

Get the original -- guy you've got the what's ever left of eclipsing that was several of the warrior you've got what's you know new game and Clinton has without more or Washington in the -- and -- in this front ends a new game and fighting -- have a --"
" But Saudi artist -- a piece of how they.
" Oh Netflix honestly where would -- be without you thanks for sponsoring this episode of iFanboy you can -- over 100000.

I have had these on my computer for years. Really good stuff. The guys were right, boy does issue 9 take you by surprise. I do agree that it is now somewhat over rated but if you can find it it is worth the read. I would love to see how it all wrapped up but I know that will never happen. I do agree that the better part of the run was the first and middle parts of Alan Moores run, around issue 10-12 it gets a little out there.

I doubt it is a suprise, but I have read all of the initial arc(1-16) and some of the Neil Gaimen issues. I love the first arc. Even though I hate when artists change in a book, I thought that the feeling of the book never changed because of it. Alan Davis is one of my all time favorites, and it is a delight to see some of his earliest work shine.
The best thing of the book was Alan Moore's magic trick of taking something that people love (Captain Marvel/Marvel Man), completely twisting it into something else, and not losing what makes the characters work. As the boys said, if someone was in the situation of having those abilities, it's not far fetched to believe they would use them to impliment their own will; be it for the good of the people or no.
Maybe one day Miracle Man will be released from comic limbo like his spiritual ancestor Captain Marvel was. What I want to see is the new generation of writers getting a chance to write something with such a great character.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also of note is that for the time, it was a completely ground breaking comic as far as content, just as Watchmen was seen to be after this. The brutal destruction that Kid Miracleman did, there is a brutal rape scene by Kid Miracleman, the birth issue, as well as other things made it a comic before it's time. It is a wonder that they were able to get an American publisher to put it out at the time.

The credits were classic.
Hmm, that was actually really interesting. I'm very interested in what Neil Gaiman would have done with "The Dark Age." Very cool stuff.

That was a really good, indepth show. I remember reading the Marvel Man strip when it first begain in the Warrior magazine (check it out) here in Great Britain. Here's a quote:
"Warrior engaged British comic fans like no other title since 2000 AD but its influence could be said to be much larger. DC Comics editor Len Wein was one regular reader and it was thanks to Warrior that he hired Alan Moore to write Swamp Thing, beginning the "British invasion" of American comics during the 1980s. Its influence was also felt on UK titles like 2000 AD, which absorbed much of the new talent Warrior had found, and began to feature more mature material and launch titles for the specialist market. Many leading comic creators from the UK, including Warren Ellis, had fan letters published in Warrior and refer to it as their inspiration to work in the medium".
It also carried the V fror Vendetta strip which I aboslutely loved. I'd agree with Josh (I think it was him that stated this, I'm sure I'll be corrected) that the start of the series is a hard read. It's a very raw Alan Moore that's writting this but it is still Moore. The printing also doesn't help. Because of the format of British comics back in the day the reproduction to standard US comic book size made it a little hard on the eyes at times as Moore tended to get a bit wordy. If you can get your hands on these issues it's well worth while if nothing else than to see Alan Moore in his formative years.
