New York Comic Con 2009 - Part 1

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 – running time 39:48
The New York Comicon is growing bigger every year, and iFanboy is there to take it all in and report back once again.

On a cold, February morning, The 4th annual New York Comicon began, and Josh and Ron were there to cover it. With Conor down with the flu, iFanboy staff writer Paul Montgomery, does his best to fill some daunting shoes. As always, iFanboy talks to the creators doing some of the best work out there. This year is no exception.

Bryan Lee O'Malley was the hottest creator at the show, hot on the release of his eagerly anticipated fifth volume, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Universe.

Mitch Breitweiser is one of the most exciting young artists to come out of Marvel in some time, working on everything from Annihilation to Captain America Theater of War.

iFanboy favorite Jay Faerber updates us on the end of Noble Causes, and the wonderful Dynamo 5, as well as some web only comics related to Marvel's War of Kings story.

Releasing a barrage of creator owned stories over the last year, Joe Kelly is a formidable franchise unto himself, with such titles as I Kill Giants, Four Eyes, Bad Dog, and others. Plus he's throwing in a Spider-Man story later this year.

Sure you like Phonogram, but if you really want to know far too much about Jamie McKelvie and Kieron Gillen, this might be the ultimate place for it. Either way, guard your CD's.

Mike Norton, DC exclusive artist on Trinity and Green Arrow/Black Canary, tries his best to answer our questions.

Finally Tony Daniel, artist from Batman RIP, and upcoming writer/artist on the follow up Battle for the Cowl, talks to us about going from pencils to scripting duties, as well as what it's like to translate the complicated mind of Grant Morrison into clear comic book pages.

Make sure you come back next week for even more creator interviews. It was too much to fit into just one show!

" It's. Well rumored to -- the answer me Hillary and."

" Another upset about Campbell have Ron and I'm Josh and we're here in New York for the New York Telecom it's the first time the season adds that 2009 economic on the fourth when they've had. It's a it's a big deal now it starts up the con season. Wait surely and we too cold weather one -- my waitress leaves don't know it's California is infected you this show this year. They've got a ton of announcements yet on a talent it's much bigger than it has been in the past and and so we certainly -- our work cut out for us to go find that -- lot of good things to say. -- So I'm here with the creator. Of Scott pilgrim Brian O'Malley native Ryan I'm dead end. So volume five hits shells couple days ago and it is the hottest thing at this com. Yes it is -- thing -- and we're here Friday and they were flying off the table here on me so. Deep -- you get the the fallen out there almost none of them that get the huge fan reaction how does it feel to be at this point in the sort. That is animals done. People are reading it at school. But you know -- sell books. So when I read it I I called and out of your -- but I called that the as the empire strikes back of the stuff out of there -- little bit of a darker tone where you come from a that."

" I bought empire strikes back virus -- pick up. Like and make -- buyers expect the Scott Miller of serious that that's -- him video they haven't the classic version mangled seats you version right. They're -- nobody the sword assaulted a little but more of mature kind of turned terms like their relationship and things like that you know. I mean that it was underlying little stories apartment. I kind of prices for a little bit the -- like -- kind of of Walton -- them. -- There's less of the video game stuff lesson you know kind of wacky music stuff in a little last night I just. -- ideals they give people the same and that's it was all about now it's on balance it's you know it's one layer that's what is it all about. It's all about. I don't know at the that it. There are other nations did it since you always -- this volume to be the kind of the dip further the the trouble violent end that it's it's the classic like second act locally type thing you know and so. Gotta go low before you go high rent those then last volume is gonna come out next year probably -- on the on the moving here I think so yeah probably next spring and then. So there's been a lot of fans like we see in the of people come dressed up like your characters and giddy fan -- got a lot of cracks in the defense what is in the best not a fan moment you've had this weekend. There's been some of the couple girls as a solo for school -- Brothers -- ask him -- school. So you brought -- some pretty awesome banner ads -- he did a whole sheet of character cards like -- card type things trading cards an amazing. Yet so you know as the great stuff. -- and then the other big news -- the movie we heard the casting is a fight that what do you tell us about the movie that we haven't herder that we might announce. It's going to be possible again at the and Haggar resurrected. It's brilliant genius guys in Toronto he's staying in Toronto all year. He stopped drinking a value that lauer announced that the but it hasn't had a drink since New -- how you lost its mind sharp position Stearns the -- I was affiliate in Toronto. Yeah Aaron and how involved you in the production of and you're there you hanging out there I'll I'll probably but -- back and forth I don't really what I'm there I've been there once that aren't really having to do so not a filmmaker is going to sit there and empty room crying. But it's you know I think it'll be fun when the search in its season. Movie magic staff and I wait for a while and inhabit the casting and also in honor yet definitely in early this is really Glor anchor has good. Strategy can I protesting in the run up by you before they cast somebody there was like as a cast. Yet no actually saw the audition tapes I've reward yet. It was it was good I'm involves little axle also. So on finally might have a good hair com. Yes I am especially with you in front of recently got -- And as going pretty well going to raise the dryness of New York -- is that it does well Paul's pretty drives when you ask players will spin it. The equipment that. Also congratulations and good luck evidently doesn't appear all right."

" I am here without it right wasn't I don't I'm doing well aggregate I would describe you. You passed up becoming a marble but let."

" You're kind of started off with -- annihilation night during World War II Captain America you all over the place in the in tone again."

" I guess so I mean. -- I've played my look is consistent but I I think they sort of found a spot for me doing more retro stories and -- and I was more comfortable about doing that and brother the the cosmic annihilation think I was a little outside the box for me. But they got me doing cap and then now I'm doing a submariner. Let's say in the eighth anniversary special and it's another like World War II era book and so I'm sort of found my niche is like the retro guy but I'm -- that I -- it lets them."

" Now you're you're first sort of working marvel was was tracks the destroyer. It was like to get back caucus that's not really your your thing I --"

" Yup yup yup I'm not really the cosmic even those that focus -- until there is like little little book that just. It's been retreated so many different Johnson and -- kick -- the -- that there was a little weir briefly I got the -- from a -- that are after. Puzzled in New York time and I was making a really a last ditch effort to try to break and -- looks like I had really told -- give it six months and -- Manhattan. Spent every dime -- laughed and just try to do this basically -- marvel every Friday knocked on the the war rode the elevator with new -- every Friday just literally -- for office drop off samples. And after about three or four months to do that they finally got the call that and they said would you like to do this -- tracks that foreign ministers like. Hell yes it's about in time -- So yes that was stolen off my back it launched by professional career and and then I had no I didn't even a contract was -- that was avail as the politics answer mail as -- the classic you know. Marble. That you."

" Literally knocked on doors. And I was and door yes that I did the old fashioned way the real question I'm impressed. That's the way it worked out for me now now you you were doing sort of vowed that theater of war Captain America sat. Way back in the forties is some that a lot of fun for you to do it yeah I love you mean like. Who wouldn't who else would know what suit. Draw superheroes like killing Nazis -- I mean that's awesome that's an awesome job so yeah element I think I saw you you Twitter. My job is to -- yes not to get it yet I was doing a cover us doing a submariner cover Ortiz. Like all the storms like. Throw in the torpedo in this Nazi's base and it's like. In this is so much fun so what does it take a lot of a lot of research to make sure you get things right and that's primary less concerned that. It is but not too hard I mean I I. I try to I try to do the research but -- it makes it easy with McDougal in the you know all the All-Star witness it. McDougal that I -- McDougal you didn't I didn't think we cut that now that. That's that the Google is interesting web savvy yet but I I am web savvy but now a little nervous to start the media guys are really famous it's -- yet. Com. Now how would you describe your style light -- seems to me like you've got its title of a realistic style I guess. Do you use photo reference to things or or the gadgets -- references like in. I would mystical like photo realism. It's more like maybe naturalist or something like that we're taking. I want the figure to have and a very realistic wait to it but I I wanna have this rush to quality to it. That. That has like like this gets equality to everybody loves looking an artist's sketches well look look and an artist's sketch work so what I want to do is sort of translate that. Passion for sketching into the final product so. It it has realistic figure weights and shapes but. You know at the other day it's still this has its energy of the -- so that's what I'm looking for. What -- the -- of the sort of artists that you that you really respected coming up when yours are learning your style and draw."

" You know in college I was I got really and Travis -- to Travis rate analyst often and later on I had. Discovered the guys that over the boulevard Tonioli loves his work in John polio and those guys. With that sort of -- the brushed the Yankees style. I was I discovered JG Jones and in college to those -- and is -- up you know through the what is that that it just phenomenal. Along those kind of guys. No you didn't work on is this kind of like a dream kind of stuff that -- stuff like what would you like to do in the future. Gosh I mean anything. Although delegates have -- along with career -- doable always wanted to do like electric kind of retro Spiderman book -- in more and more realistic style. It is a really going to fit with the stuff that they've been doing recently but that's kind of what I think people about it a little out of the box this Letterman. And had a blast doing the -- to any project with fraction that was a lot of fun. So -- elected visit the X characters again will be fun and then they were was in the Balkans and under the new name Morgan and and the response. -- applause so on the open it was like anymore project and that -- Gamers got like a fan base it's not huge but you click on it's like strange like he has his own little group of people in the very heart or about it. --"

" Right as you know -- is not here we're going to need little extra help he needs to step up is an -- is yes. Is there anyone you thinking you know the kind of guy -- talked to or whoever."

" Alan won't be good way to start our. -- Couldn't -- a little lower for the first one Stan Stanley we didn't question. All right well we didn't see him that be cool but. You know we're friendly with Mike Norton he's good guys -- with the -- think that's -- good he's really tall. It's okay you can do look up -- And out and got it yet we could do like Lord of the Rings -- appeared to be back there that perspective and don't really have a an effect budget okay. So we're just gonna do this straight a students --"

" A severe."

" We are non. That the book it's on mind it's done it's going to the crater like next week so it's nice to be out about a month or so and it's. It's good I think it's it's it's a good. It's a point ending. And I find it in little. It's sort of the -- people really redeemed man but I want to leave the door open and I find it it's kind of intentional it I think it -- it keeps the soap -- roots for so you agree that you have closure at this point there. A closure when it when it there early you know he's in my hands in the end but he -- at a point it. And it. So but I got the looked out of a five justice will be to pass that blastocyst and -- we have -- you can just last week it -- in the average coming out two weeks well he we're trying to. You know -- programs schedule so. It's ninety was now it's just couple days ago -- zero which -- argue that it introductory 1996 issue is down the team. Any seats when he should be out probably the first week in -- second week so we're we're almost back. What's the between you know the trail the first trading 999 and do the zeroes since and it's a monopoly to think you're doing a lot this book to get new readers on -- all about losing money they -- You know we're we're trying to get just keep it accessible as accessible possible. Just you know it's funny accents and it's a complete story. With a big text recap it will. Bring -- steel marvel the series so far and then it kinda starts the ramp up efforts to 25 which will be out later this summer. It has to be kind of game changer 25 double size if you deal with some pretty surprising changes that are going to. You'll be long lasting it won't really. Reinvent the way to book. Works I can't believe that I was of this 25 no mediator if like just just discovered it I know I know it's pretty crazy. Well so arms sit in the -- flannel and the war -- that thing and and here they've associated with it so let's let's go let's disorder that we're doing doing it at digital exclusive comic it ties into more polls workings of -- I'm doing some sort stories you reached every seat counts but they're they're reach shorter stories. One source restore from -- humans and one's stars. Milan -- the former empress of this issue are empire. And -- to both of whom have fairly prominent schools in the proper workings story got so my stories take place before workings. They're kind of reviews in the -- kind of -- both characters in game. Provide a little clearer idea of their motivations in it and how they see the world and it wider taking decides they are and its workings. As it is only. It's digital only at you know an approach that we're used satellite yeah there was a little trepidation there yet known I was I was fine usually it sounds cool and I'd like they're you know they're making a lot of Al reaches into digital realm and eating apple other original digital aren't doing so it's it's. I applaud companies for for you know. Taking initiative and respects it's critical it's like going to read it out you bring down a five and in other. Digital like easy job my general five collaborator -- are. He's throwing it gladiator working story. It was a bad yesterday which I found out -- Pathetic communication it's at what did you just offered it -- recently and so. In reality it's I wish we could collaborative -- story that we can -- double wrong office saying let's save effort out of a five because suffered through and it's true I don't want to cheapen our our relates."

" Thanks. -- I'm Bob Montgomery staff writer right now we're not I'm getting ready for my first big interview with Mike Norton later today. So I think I need said get ready for the city to practice -- nobody so -- sort of practice and you know. So Mike. You like drawing. It clarity as they do it."

" Whatever all I really enjoyed just the art and that is I just really love the there -- Well I just really."

" Let me give me something to war quit. Black and -- nets I was wondered you have to use a ruler to drum fish -- because it looks like it's really complicated -- at some point anchored as. Which and again on its editors this again. Or is that some anchor does. Is that's an anchored. They are. These -- trying for optimal distance between -- arm out and acts are gonna test again that's going to. Just answer the question you need subsequently -- right so Mike. You like -- like you like trying to books that you're drawn. Your hand doesn't in this all of my back to you can see from the network is that's in the without -- QT. Let's go to -- and lucky went. It works. And so ready for this."

" Pioneer Joe Kelly I don't good thanks I don't. We now we talked to most resilient city daily even since then there's more stuff to talk to you about. -- at that point I kill giants I had just come out and and there's the book is now leads that come out you got a really good response to it like how to that you'll see it the -- resonate it's been fantastic media giants to super superhero in my heart. I really care about that book and the fact that people are responding so well to it is just wonderful it's. I mean I kept hearing stories about people like. Tearing up like people reading on the bus on the way home I mean did you know -- doing that when you're putting it together I I was -- that was going to be the case this. It's probably one of the few things that are worked on where every time I'd do it. I would go at the clock again we'd be invited pencils I get -- you know so I was really happy to hear that that people respond in kind. And then and then you've busy well as other books that that have nothing to do wanna -- artists you know see the same versus Mattingly spoke to would be. You'd be -- usual so for -- another book how would you describe that. Well for rises. It's this story about a kid who it is it's revenge story. About a kid is going up against the gangster because his father's killed. But the way he does it is through dragon fighting and it -- depression -- Brooklyn. So it's like this very tricky. But very very grounded story about dragons were around New York in the thirties I was really like you flip that page you see like the big dragon and remember that. The first time I did that art is is stunning I mean Richard would you dig up back back come in now -- being mare he's he's from what -- sorry it's imminent that Argentina. And he's that he's unbelievable and I knew it was a good artists inning I think basically like a Christmas card -- was -- a slightly different silence like. Can you do this like mix of cartooning and realistic music -- is that I prefer to drive. He doesn't work benefiting like. Lately he's seen as mainstream work versus sister right now it's incredible that so I loved I mean it's -- for rises amazing and luckily. That that artist helping the people who have to wait because unfortunately -- the book which I take responsibility for it but it's beautiful so hopefully people feel it's worth the way. Now how how long does that series go on for you know it it said. It's not open ended meaning it has an ending. But it's going to be a longer series like kind of a -- On and then just recently bad dog and another image -- came out now I don't anticipate this up but from what I hear is it's it's dirty. These very -- Garrity the dog is very bad. Yet that -- is about a bounty hunter who happens be aware -- Who doesn't like people very much so we never turns human again and it's raunchy and it's kind of like. The book that when I -- when I found preacher for the first time it's -- reading that. Those seeds planted for this book this is the book that I would wanna. Give cigars to be like here's my testament to your word that it's it's it's pretty fun and it's still it's dark comedy into the never -- to think -- thought I can't do that and then just. Oh yeah it again and that the first issue you know is not as bad as accessible for the some pretty nasty stuff that's come down -- and and it's fun I mean -- you know it's really it's all the stuff I -- you know it's where wolves fervent and swearing and spread. You love we're all suburban yeah yeah there are those together and then and then if I'm not -- still another book is averted a book coming out with the right bang tango it says six issue crime story. And it's I can't exactly tell you it's about this and others -- events on the tube and it's it's about a guy used to be like a leg breaker for the mob. And had to go on the run because of a mistake he made this past catches up -- but it's got it it's got kind of its twists on the last page of the first issue that hopefully we'll. It's shocking on his artificial but when you can't -- what it's about entirely because it is it is the guy could sail an imminent vertigo -- and -- its -- sort of the big look at this thing. It's a weird one you know it's really like deconstructing it gangsters you like sex and violence in and -- So you've got a ton of work coming out the midnight is that he's been incredibly busy the last year is pretty amazing it's a combination of things it means some UNICEF had been not in the drawer but like alive but not being. Drawn for awhile you know right written like giants I've -- quite a while ago. So I met Ken and we had taken our time -- that you know where we solicited after he'd drawn a lot. As most like -- rise which is a little more ongoing bad dog I'm writing as we go. So and bang tango was -- while ago also actually wrote that a while ago. There anything else but missing is that a lot of stuff Mike kids' book is gonna come out this year Douglas Fredericks in the house today. And that comes out with Ben -- images when that out also and that's another book that's actually been literally finished. -- a year at least it's just been waiting. Carly didn't figure -- book market versus direct marketing and stuff like that -- It's radiance done and I can't wait for people see that tonight and then on top all of that they're doing Spiderman two and a Spider-Man yet. I'm an animation by a vote yes we have to have hope. The little tugboat. Yes Spiderman my -- Americans that make. With -- menace and looks fantastic it's called Americans -- it and it's playing a lot of the big pieces some excited it. Feels like -- there from everything -- you know Spiderman is is in. A new era I guess does it does it does if you feel that -- duration working on the books now -- it I guess the new epoch is is that Spiderman is married anymore as everything does that make it. Exciting and fresh again I guess. Oh yes sure but for me I mean there was always that Spiderman so I was always really excited I mean it's one of the what the mainstream characters -- so I love I really care about had not had the opportunity really right I did just one short story about two years ago so on. I was I was found no matter what and then to get to come in after brand -- day and didn't even with the controversy it's sort of exciting to separate incidents the storm -- And and everybody's great it's smart writers great artists you know and it is fantastic so we have -- Samir Jamie chair and the creative team behind -- program Harry has done at the end of that at the end of the day at the a buyout bids Aaron."

" Miserable miserable little -- general. Disposition -- negative we just too big open illegal confused but eventually during insulating episode meet its use of excel is famous and three we have full we've we've -- been around -- so solid it. As we listen Bill Gates it was a it was a do the roving signing in the united you've got to come find -- saves as you can grab but the lake is about you well. But already Beijing has trampled to say the budget good which is only found -- Atlanta I have -- iPod -- But what he's he must life. That we just disappeared what I feel like public. So this the first body has been out since the second issue first vision sensors monitor came out. -- how -- place in America trusts and it is really world matters they absurd and tell us the straight us 'cause the receptionist and a second series been. Brady gets. -- we've food everybody. We've prepared some content with trick them with a logical culprit and -- let people think it's pretty -- to let people give it Tavis I think to see we -- be good yeah. And then they say no it's things just -- it's a special magic trick and tonight it's good he's been -- the series. The first series that it really how about if you take them. I've been I've let it was a bit bit of a different format this time around you need -- and in your words what is the new format boat people cut the -- government data everywhere they're competing to get them them out the -- head we did that and we saw the all of the things the night to publishers that they symbol would ask you double think doesn't get -- to -- that -- it Oden. The sit out a series of issues it's also the single like look at age she pulls the comparison here in the nightclub and he says signal stores is that respected so it was a cool little destruction utility what she was going on. -- these individual stories by -- other details of -- what meeting created this means -- I this was that we don't like a -- so let's say it's going to round table which is wondering what now. Tons of all through there's like six pages like to talk stories but overall this that we put the home. Into a paying a whale but what you do with the elect public -- In not alas its just they'll slow. Thunderstorms they'll do missile thought comics magazine sort of the bullet -- it until this I would never say the price -- makes me not just they tend to self reliant again it. -- everything. Extra equipment division is the most is the best value public in existence -- definitely yes this is excitement of the -- I don't know stated it's so."

" The first series was a black -- a series of full color yeah. How -- now -- up and be working in with the full color Pallet fantastic I'm Allison news is pricing out the amazing job. -- I think he he was my -- them cameras off. And quit loving it radiates it's pretty and a subsequent expound. I think the kind of by the people expected it to be back from wanted to go there was surprised when what has become learned is that over the decisions but -- street reasons. To do this -- some of the often on this homered to once they've -- colorful pop -- took an inside. -- I mean he's he's pretty he can take him prices I would get statements premise scoring this -- one for. The models that fit it -- bank -- its -- It in the I guess like us. Standard model I don't think I'll dance -- does what you want but not back and bombing site it's cool to see different in the different types and I really does make an epiphany right."

" So a couple of Scully doesn't get a blog posts and -- site about what the next issue would come out. So and I was -- because I think it's localized it was but the business is -- quite bad. Putting out as a monthly issue versus just doing at all collecting and as a trade. Do you think that's the direction he doesn't go and on the road are you still gonna stick to the monthly issue format for feature series there."

" Well we've been -- I'm up for this event of a series and its a specific reasons for being singled and -- from a different story. When you're guessing this year as it did it reads the needs -- when you read as of right -- this period of failure subsidies give each person's story. Yeah and everything we've been discussing it. With -- good series if if we if we get the shipments there is just. -- that in my."

" Originates but it's a series that's yeah. -- going to that -- with medical toys it to its. Give up so cynical but spent just about the getting open -- sort as the thirty need to get done. I'm -- production reasons voicing the issue actually base that still being done. So yeah it's it's a much bigger local Pei this year and it comes financial adults and what she -- restore investor and Roosevelt. It was typical levels and adjusting the new and interesting there was they suggest that -- got some. 'til full townspeople relatives are there which Bible I Europe and I predict what let's what joy as well. -- of partner -- where we -- we during -- puts the postponement of ideas by which way you get the attention the over the but -- people hoping to conceive of a gold toilet level notes at voted on the public about labeling of all spam and pop music and magic yes and caption boxes and and and starvation. -- public slugs elevation of the let's -- them and -- It's it's bullet could relax for the comics -- it's -- black president -- and it and focusing photographs are steeped in music what is on your guys out by these days let's hear what your recommendations."

" I've just second avenue that lay out how on how much they it's all right it's not as that's amazing it's okay. Or my favorite news news cost -- from barrier. And it's. It's like -- kids from -- and this is for now this really gets kind of an extra music. So yes the -- out of you."

" a -- photo but it looks like that -- up a can of -- price -- over the which are enjoying a wolf much then like. This Velika into the single one of the singles to pick a -- and -- sort of political rights -- lost the casinos. Let's just. -- The depth it's not just going -- X that you've got me in the coming as well now about to sit down your kids that GP holdings the coalition get. -- and we can see somebody here was this big electronics they got in a pink pantsuit that a woman very weak lets me was so tight it's on my head. -- within its provisional directly inside -- it is anticipated that yeah. David it is just let's let's stick to it what I think that's sort of -- slid into the city they -- Beautiful beautiful songs I didn't expect that -- and they -- what you would expect that nowadays like we was what it -- that it understood it was a rental. Event like going to got here in the -- definitely one of the pits the plug on its. But it's hot button. For political it's what I -- that it was like but the public about the look at records and -- I don't know literal about it."

What are you doing -- picnic -- this is not professional at all. This is my first interview I tried to interview this and you're walking through. What are you doing. The work particularly Tom caters wouldn't do this he probably would do this but he Buick funny. What is wrong with. -- The worst thing about comics media. Take your mutton chops get your PT cruiser and PT crews on back to San Francisco -- might get lost. You -- shot. Not. A professional career is over we'll see what the party tonight but you're not mean you professionally done. There's nobody shots of rustic colonial Williamsburg with our heads in the stock gains and keeping those but professionally done. Where that's -- All right so black canary was this fish nets. You do he's like a ruler for those. I'm here attorney Daniel I don't very good sir no we were just discussing your sort of that the grim -- of characters it seems. Any book come put on no -- saying somebody's going to die -- be carted off. In a casket are taking it there now that you don't have to take any of that."

" Blamed for that win win now when Bart went down. You didn't write any of that."

" It was an editorial mandate that Bart must be -- but I was -- that others specifically. To you he'll bark. Really they needed it they needed the right -- they wanted it. Portrayed and and an emotional manner and you know it's very privileged to be thought of as that person and not. I did the best I could zone."

" That that that worked out pretty well because they knew ended up on the very high profile Graham Morris and -- and story are right knee on. Now that was apparently complicated story and I remember reading it thinking. What -- the scripts be like what must be like -- get a script like that and then have to translated into something you know that that people can easily understand so I mean how how would you expect that."

" Well. I had to use the grants grips it took me. It's admit you months. Prior to our -- starting actually I was able to you that they hang of it. And then it became confident whipped up I was betraying his scripts and I knew he was liking it and and the editors of liking and once I got confident that I was you know. Translating his thoughts and ideas. Good enough and it made me feel more relaxed and as David do you just do my thing and and at my own down clarity where they're needed to be clarity and you know boats in or or whatever did this story needed that felt much more comfortable. Adding whatever I don't need to be added to help. Petraeus is it."

" That you. As I read through it and I I really act like you're becoming stronger artist magazine in the -- through that's on the notice you've felt like they're going through it."

" Well I I -- I always push myself to become better artist and not my goal it's not they had put forth that certain goals and one of them is. To do better job than -- month before and for me. I'm very hard on myself and -- part of my work -- Bringing in the right team is -- social and you know those guys get you know the credit as well so but we we really pushed it. -- talent you be the best it possibly be with. With working on that man or anything that we're doing. Would you say that that that's that has been sort of the most challenging stuff you've had to do that is most challenging. But that I've done. Until now you know battle of the battle for the column doing is is pretty challenging but. On the writer and artist so -- age you know I know what I what I want whereas. We're working for Grant Morrison. It's. Hoping to you translate and his thoughts tonight ideas so it was very challenging because. -- story was so complex. And there's. Pieces -- moments where if I don't captured just right you can it's totally lost so. Hopefully. In everybody's happy -- I would --"

" Well. -- mean. I -- learn a lot from working with -- Geoff Johns -- The artwork that he puts in cities known not crafting of a story and and Grant Morrison. Just the -- but his ideas it's you know I think and actually some of that. Rubbed off on me -- terms at least my approach. But I've also you know I've been working. In old. On my own techniques and and you know writing on the -- you know. You know keeping my skills from being rusty by doing screenplays are trying to get something set out. So. You know it's it's it's it's a good opportunity army and I'm taking advantage of it and down. I'm happy to be in this position now the top did you did you pitch to do the follow up for for the story well and of that happening they didn't have a writer Baghdad and asked me who I wanted. And I I game if you names any everything -- I need that you names and the name of the -- That I. Mention where is he couldn't do better what have you and we just started talking about what about a for the house yet be. And I sort of getting carried away and really giving him ideas and telling them how polygamy and I jokingly said you should just let me write it you know and it and I'm really joke and ended up -- thinking you know what that's not that funny. I think it might want to do this. And we talk some more about it at -- and next thing you know I had the whole story plotted out for them and gave them a chance to it's a sample my. My you know my writing abilities might just hammering out a first draft for them and on the strength of that they said yes he's -- man and now luckily you know I would really aren't quite likely you know off balance in my -- again."

" Now now how is and his house the -- and be different from what we've seen in the Graham Morrison run and then. I think you describe the score but the story is a little bit."

" that this. What appeal of it it's much different because it's not. But that's the simplicity we do have some mystery elements and thereby. Not so much like all right he resists. You know so you -- story -- only have three issues. 38 -- like ninety pages tell a very big -- So it is more high octane. Accented but we also have our great. Emotional beats in there as well. Giving characters dealing with the the death the Bruce Wayne as far as they know. And what if anybody see it. Six due to take Bruce's place it in. If at all so that's what we're dealing."

" And that is all this week folks the fact is we shot. Too much stuff here comic con this year so we'll be back next week with a whole new show featuring Greg rock Paul Cornell and -- Possibly going insane. In the meantime make you check out iFanboy dot com the comment on this show and all the other stuff there.

" And here with Mike Norton artist. Green -- black canary and trinity. I don't like it by an accountant very. Is -- to do all the actors and Richards.

Sending emails to contact iFanboy dot com -- three dot com slash I've been working more video and see you next week."

" So I have to go -- Imus interview. -- great. It was when I was there when -- anything."

" The union."

" And you know what's that --"

Episode 109 - New York Comic Con 2009 - Part 1 [Discussion]

Click here to download the show!

It was too much to fit into just one show!

wha..? a simpsons reference? Is anyone other than me here nerdy enough to be on Nohomers? In any case, great show. Hilarious, and extreamly interesting, especially learning that Mitch Breitweiser got his start by knocking on doors. Wow.
