Oni Press Spotlight

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009 – running time 23:54
This week, iFanboy focuses on the diverse output from Oni Press, the independent publisher of such amazing titles as Scott Pilgrim, Wonton Soup, Wasteland, and many more.

Narrowing their focus on a single publisher, Ron, Josh, and Conor take a look at the excellent and varied output of Portland, Oregan publisher Oni Press. Only 12 years old, and delivering comics for the "real mainstream" Oni makes many great comics, and iFanboy gives you a tour of some of what's available.

Chris Schweizer's Crogan's Vengeance is one tale in the long family history of the Crogan's. This first chapter is about pirates. And yes, the lettering is superb.

If you're looking for all ages books, you could do a lot worse than Matthew Loux's Salt Water Taffy books, about the adventures of two young boys and their adventures in the wilds of Maine.

Bringing together the gourmet food craze and space rogue action in one completely imaginative book, Wonton Soup by James Stokoe is unlike any other book you've ever seen. If that's not enough weird adventure, take a look at Multiple Warheads by Brandon Graham.

If you've been around iFanboy for a long time, you might recognize the work of Lars Brown. His book North World is a little bit of fantasy and sorcery, and a little bit of modern personal slice of life.

If you're looking for well crafted, intelligent post-apocalyptic comics that don't feel like also-rans, there's no better place to go than Wasteland by Antony Johnston and Christopher Mitten.

Sure there were a couple movies about him, but one of the best explorations of Truman Capote out there is Capote in Kansas from Ande Parks and Chris Samnee. On a completely different track, check out Parks' satirical book, Uncle Slam Fights Back.
