You'd be surprised at the the number comics that are based on, or inspired by music. This week iFanboy tunes into some of the latest comics who turn it all the way up to 11, like Phonogram, Scott Pilgrim and Blue Monday.
Some comics use music to set the mood, by providing a soundtrack or playlist to each story, you can hear the music that inspired the creator or is meant to be playing within the panels:

Blue Monday by Chynna Clugston and Local by Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly, are 2 great examples of this.

Other comics use music as the subject of their stories. Whether the main characters are in a band, or making music, or using music to fight demons, music is a key part of the stories told.:

Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley. Garage Band by Gipi Love the Way You Love by Jamie S. Rich and Marc Ellerby Black Metal by Rick Spears and Chuck BB

And finally, there have been a crop of comic books inspired by music, for both their stories as well as the tone set. In the first case, brit pop is explored in the pages of Phonogram. And for fans of Belle and Sebastian, there is the anthology collection Put the Book Back On the Shelf which features some top indie comic talent such as Rich Remender, Andi Watson, and many others.

Kind of energetic one of those like kind of poppy hit from the new -- scenario audience little. Yet because if you're not an -- music is unfortunately you know large American experts and not -- at least not intimately so. What you're doing easier they're shoving yourself into the -- that you mean the voice of the people. " so I decided I don't know how mostly music that is I didn't bother me 100 rent that is capacity. As -- yeah yeah -- that's that's writes a little bit."

" wanted his that you use music as Kennedy yet you know like you really hear music and you know this is right is that it could -- could it could mid -- on some people off that could open some people to new music but for others -- a friend of ours. It's completely spot -- you know like -- that noted that you know you're into. Eighties new wave Brit pop all that kind of stuff and you look at these characters they dressed the way you dress this is like comment made for you can. So blue Monday it's on my personal -- I wish she would do more. But -- and if you."

" He thought he didn't -- was only honest it's nothing that. You were wrong. Because there's -- the happier. The it. Okay okay yeah park and a lot it didn't work. We have to us. -- did we did west -- okay. -- You purchase."

" but another comic that uses it's not as aggressively as China. But -- to test that's soundtrack is local. Brian would then Ryan Kelly. And that's also published felony. And while music. Isn't baked into the pages themselves at the end of every issue both Brian Ryan right up kind of thoughts and an issue. And it provided play less. And whether that play list is meant to be. The soundtrack for that issue or what they were listening to when they -- drew river I've found it's really did an excellent first things -- jump to after every -- is to see what they what kind of music that I'm recommending. And music is kind of see this -- a little bit into each one each issue evidently didn't -- Andersen windows on the background but you get this feeling about its presence. You know and and local as a one and done kind of a but -- an ongoing story about a story about. Each cities in America and this one girls travels to the country as she grows up. And it's really really good comes infrequently. Let's worth it and added -- to issue eleven or twelve now and so there should be a trade for bugs and stuff. But it's a local blue Monday a really good examples of comics that set the tone by the -- It's a way for sort of the creators tax connect with their audience that way which actually breaks that that fourth wall or likeness previously this is what's in my head and -- we -- story. But now there's there tends to be sometimes up comics that use music as a plot device is music is present within this a worry in the storytelling and characters like that. Com one example want to -- the supplement series by Brian O'Malley published on his well only seems the right into the music kind of I think it editorial staff expertise in this that its use it again. But I'm so -- program is let's have written and drummer Brian O'Malley is from Toronto. -- in Canada. And I read and understand the resume and interview with O'Malley what he's saying Paul -- music is a big big part is. Done. Yeah there's like a year ago. Museum to be part of his life and he said music kind of works its way in and everything that he does and in the case of Scott pilgrim on the main characters supplement is in -- man. And so throughout the story to -- the four following -- came counselor for mines and it's these little timeout and a kind of sizes. But to -- to size inside the size or exit. But throughout the book. Some of the stories how revolved around his -- plane that practice saying it becomes less. Prevalent as it does not about him being in the band band is like is one of the things he does."

" Where is my -- almost potty in the book well he's a recorded -- the the Steve stills. But I mean in the first couple -- that it's important. -- I came pronounces her sex -- sex bomb bomb or sex bomb. That hasn't received written every -- in the book I laugh. And that's funny to receive the base. Whoever just like. It really tells you because. A lot of remain -- going to be singer we are what he's the bass player and -- so it's kind of it says he's not really you know in the band shirts it's a thing do with a place to be about you know. Exactly if it does not write music with with. But I think it's an interesting contrast compared to a book this book rock band. First second published this is an Italian book. From Italy this. That that's been translated. It's about time aspect. That's a bunch of kids and you know at first you're relating. You know like this is great it's about some kids there have been and they find this practice space say they get together and music -- reported today -- want to get. We get through serious -- yeah. Aspect of one of the and then their I don't wanna play it off -- think -- crazy -- crazy. Yeah like phase. -- but it's it's about how these these kids who -- ostensibly for errands or nothing going on nothing to do which is every. Music man they are struggling yet. But you know like the one of the bad case that no one of the parents trust in and it's just about how they feel really invite other you know go play this garage space. You know it's it's actually very similar it's really beautifully -- done if you've ever had experienced team and there are you know like it -- to -- pain relievers it's. My -- would be if you're at."

" Atop Europeans are probably won't like yep that's very European and -- it -- for. Angular those -- belongings as all the doesn't look like America comic movies yet nobody it's it's an interesting because rock and roll in this stuff you know this is uniquely American thing that things that's interesting to see that. It's it's almost weird this year and Europeans intervene when abuse and obviously you rumpled man. What started that plane -- and it's changed since then it's become a bit now like this -- just -- in -- you don't think of -- took the time at all best Q there are right. I don't think it was weird to see that. I also don't read them public if you don't want the full page Hitler yeah but -- subway tunnels Hitler. I don't know what tentative about him but it but it -- this is awful it was very lighthearted whereas -- is not a realistic it's more realistic and we thought and it also it's it's very. --"

" And so but then conversely on the back on the other side of spectrum -- book that only press also publishes a loved the way you love where. It's it's a new Roman romance book or -- dormant account in the romantic book. -- And they're talking to a label and are rapid and the singer falls in love with a and but -- done. And what what you get is that you get the whole love triangle and then and then she dumps there are rampant as the singer and -- And -- it it it was. It was fun to read and it again it was. Cut closer but we -- for the music and had been a bit more corporate pop presence that all of it and it seemed to be the same where's the pop up rock and exactly well. -- Well not have a hip problem when I saw that only also put a homeland in realizes what the only pressure we're gonna get away from them and that. -- Black metal by excuse chuck BB -- white people. The uh huh presented. And I thought it was really funny because. And in this book. Black metal is that is the book is the sort. It's wave less realistic it's way kind of fantastical. What they're really kind. Yes we have pretty much you've got these two twins who are. Who are severed in that you beings that are actually reincarnated god can fight the demons and the black metal is their power and I. This is Scott pilgrim -- up our. It is I think a lot it states because there life. There's little evil kids everybody thinks it like that part fact they're evil is that it's cool yeah it's it's like they're kind of wacky control. But it turns out isn't that the clueless is that I like this I liked the fact that their their their early teens so they're not like full team yanks this young. That Andy there. And there and what I liked was that in in the beginning at least they're just that school and then this normal kind of saying and that just. Matalin and nobody understands us metal and then it just takes this kind of left turn. So wraps up the limit for to a simpler and takes a left turn towards video games and kind of it -- a pixel turned to -- demons then and stuff but the thing is immaterial the like hardcore -- yet -- little black metal and that's a bus."

" This is an analogy if you Americans understand this is like a Saturday that pilots get which is really funny car accident and I looked up but second half feel right. It's abandoned a while ago this thing that sense it was really funny. On -- too long -- I see it's a series yeah and there's more I don't I don't I enjoyed this one -- read anymore because jokes and done."

" An and that and that's what's funny because because I would imagine of your musical genres out of how often do you listen to metal black -- IE. I have listened that stuff and I do enjoy so that I I think it cracked me up throughout the whole book. And it's the kind of thing where like I know I know at least like twenty kids like you get this to a they would just love it because they'll eat it up because it speaks of that excellently blue Monday speaks -- something in that regard. So yeah I think it's Alan mentioned is accurate inaccurate just as a joke -- over I don't know what gas and yeah."

" The opposite effect its first are constantly. Keys. I guess that -- very funny a little bit cause plot here while we get to. See lost. As funny and again. Could it betrays us we'll also if you like medal do you have a lot then to make up your -- like Madeleine. Exactly -- that. So that the even."

" It's huge so why is it coming into us now. I -- her. -- There's you have to have a busy and if you go to. -- Yeah. Yeah yeah -- So please."

" Classes are taught by a couple books that on the image comics for that in the past couple. Probably years that you focused on these economists are available -- this I don't know if focused -- kind of music is subject matter -- mention is more recent one called on Graham. Which it was written by Karen Dillon and drummer Gene Kelly who's currently -- in suburban Atlanta which will love. But this is a black and white -- that drew him back right now and we but it's kind of a do you explain it. Yes it's a little bit it's got a whole Lotta the magic with a K. The kind of you know -- this. The tent -- of that magic. Specifically Brit pop this this -- pop in the mid ninety's which which is where his his magic power comes from yet he sees is his power from the power of oasis bowler -- other bands as well. From the error I don't want to spoil the story for I'll let you figure out. But. But -- well enough. All the -- it took so I'm not dead he can't imagine him which is in the room and stuff like that. So it's a little it was art collective one thing you love in the blood that you -- me you're forced together exactly together out of power the Kelly's art. That isn't exactly ultimately I -- we love it and because mainly because of the art and because of the music stuff the little wizard is quite that I --"

" beginning it was really the -- as good as the --"

" But it's going to be ongoing -- them -- kind of series and I imagine no kind of get their legs under him but what I -- of all of the music -- do a large chunk of it is very pop -- what I loved was that and it never -- that let's show the -- and the creative use of the covers like discovers a homage to honestly its first record -- case itself yet. And each cover was homage to a different record cover from the nineties for that period in the back this extensive kind of notes and planets."

" Back to the first blue Monday local he put his -- when he was writing a book like there was that and you don't get their references musher -- be into it but he has a -- time and effort itself like he mentions a band he explains who the band was and why irrelevant. Some of his own personal opinions that take or leave yeah. What about those -- So that's it's just. If you wanted to know the very effective very expensive for."

" And it's a lot of work into of the bastard. Finally signals that the finalists that want to mention which I don't think it's got a lot of mention in the comics press cited Syria's now is -- book is the cult of the book back on the shelf would you. Which is and anthology. Indy. Artists cut comic traders interpreting and doing comics based on the music don't Sebastien. Bill Sebastien is kind of like a they're Scottish indie rock. Band. And they've they've been arrested late ninety's and Lotta their songs lend themselves constantly telling each you know look how lyrics race -- comments something so what image did was they got. A bunch of different craters like works here's the black metal case and stretch from. Yeah and -- and Watson did one -- recommend area. And they each took a song ended accommodation that song. Now some of them. Head were built build words in the comic -- specifically lyrics and that's it and they were just kind of visualization of the songs some little more inspired by the songs on Sunday roast or based -- the song. Some of them. Were done really creatively where the songs playing in the background. -- somewhere they in pulled in some lyrics and the storybook kind of elaborate on it. No one and when it's anthology shows a lot of what very different styles different stories no one I thought was a white. And this is truly an anthology -- it was a huge cross says that -- like that song do whatever and turn it however you. Policy equality is what's going to be one aliens and their leaders like some -- So ultimately if your fan don't Sebastien you need to on this book. If you don't like poetic anthologies and should probably. Look back on this. -- If you're in today indie artists you know kind of indie comic scene in like different kind of solved if you like the flight anthology and likened colleges and so then you might enjoy this and and not knowing -- about them Sebastian. But at me -- a pilot of special of them this when I got to cut itself into."

" We've certainly. No yeah I remember you know I'll read don't hope there's a flying buddy bill that read that one."

" And it's just pick up there you wanted to exactly and it's into you know this yeah -- bizarre look at it yeah. But it was effective but it's interesting because. What I decided as both -- fan was the creative expression of the songs you know like weapons that each each time -- with each story -- untenable some lovely you know until let -- that's what that's a different take well that's different I don't. Actually equaled a series of news of the artists different genres of music yet perhaps Peterson and something like this. I -- yeah. An accurate like an election to it and this as a series would be good Russia. I could see a news like the idea I've expected to all the people they clearly put effort that. Just. It worked hand. -- features. Couldn't -- and the teachers. Any comedy isn't wearing that T shirt over archer."

" As did her best -- teachers from -- that's not -- effective way. To check it out. Check -- the -- and we are single. Now it is. --"

" Whenever I read comics that I highly. -- in the music when I read and so music in comics for me on the other so school season comics actually bring music into the subject and that content itself well so I'm sure -- McConnell we forgot we focused mainly on the past few years assumption this stuff amusing no doubt that it you know -- publishing department -- that is that is just how. Comment about this equally effective. -- It nice and Soviet any suggestions source that that we -- talk battered tells them and check that you can you know also contact and I Pamela dot com."

" And if there's a comic you know about some other type of music. Why neighbors like it's good you -- sports eight and boys ages three to 66 months that."

" And but I can't but probably discussed about this show up all these books you can also is picking up there then you can. Right about the wanting to talk about -- that are revision three dot com slash established forms -- in the same thing. Just bitch and moan about what we didn't use this music and Olympics -- long."

" Music in comics are probably two of the most debated topics of their you know because everybody believes they -- right and you are wrong. You lose a -- as people get pissed off that I. Rockers like throwing stones at them."

" It's very. Two. Hey welcome to another of the life and what happens. -- Show."

" God. Odd. We have pursued --"

" Tonight and we'll be accomplished deception show based on the website and when dot com I'm -- argument -- And this week we thought we would take a look at.

-- Show."
