Scott Pilgrim

Scott Pilgrim might be the most unique, fun, and energetic books out there. If you've always wanted to check it out, here's your chance.

Bryan Lee O'Malley turned comics on their ear with the release of the first volume of this acclaimed series, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. The series was like nothing we'd ever seen: a combination of music, relationships, video games, manga, and sheer mad genius.

Josh, Ron, and Conor try to distill just what is so special about Scott Pilgrim, and we find out all about Ron's special night in bed with the first book, and what this all has to do with Harry Potter and Arrested Development.

Clearly, Oni Press has struck gold, and surely Scott's rating is indeed "awesome." And once you read the first one, it would be nearly impossible to stop before reading the second, third, and fourth volumes.

" After reading. But I want to three on. Basically I am I realize this book is fantastic and I want to know when it's for coming can't blame for. Volume four came out the late fall early winter of -- said yes it was a long way between mine's six and -- three by four. Honestly warrior."

" And if the data volume -- came -- I realized something."

" And I realize that and this is my opinion you have my visitors -- I realized two things one that."

" Uh huh whom -- on the two things I realize is one that. I think Scott pilgrim's autopsies might be one of the most important series of this decade of Cox I think when we went in ten years from now what we're doing Michelle. From what we're going to look back and see what's -- to connect him everything that's. And then it. That's something that is that's toppled from now is the Harry Potter of Cox and I'll explain."

" I'm sitting in the -- cops -- the data came out and watched a."

" She dreamed of people go in the door to the wall to counter to the chair certainly. Like people wait for months or sold out of this on Wednesday that it came --"

" And people who weren't literally waiting for it and when they get it they devour the day came out all three -- credit."

" And this is like when tonight after work -- 200 pages because it's just like it was what we needed."

" And you want to talk about -- as good crossover potential like give this book to people who don't read comic books that are into. Like video games there and said mom music yeah no immunity in -- like it's it gets you out of that comic book. This this book is like nothing else on the shelves in -- months and -- and but but I mean but I think the combination of mobile --"

" The personal relations culture I think this is going to end up representing a generation. I think that there that could be here are making broad sweeping I -- is -- essential that -- their kids who are like 1516 who read this and and night. Like I remember when and we were what your kids are watching singles -- don't -- how good -- that Latinos it was. But like that was so we want to thank you so that you got people who are in the same page report reading this that you'll yes that's -- I -- and you got people like us like it was when it was that uh huh."

" I felt like I obviously. Let's go. At Opel executives that the -- at the fever pitch when war came out what you think I've seen recently it was just like everyone was talking about it. It was absorbed by it yet there was -- that's good is being. This flies off the shelves this allows that is it's. And this everybody wanted to read it read the first day of talking about it."

" We talked about in his book is. What's good about it you know I suppose and I think for me. A little better because it -- pressure was trying to think and then what I realized that it's actually really. On the part of the -- yeah. He's -- let it seems sort of stream of consciousness to me and and in a good way like they're still but it's a way forward like. But -- here but this little thing that's for a month visual jokes and it's very clever in -- words and running running running jokes at which started on one still come. On. And like just the stuff like Scott goes -- little meter you know like the video game like help me then."

" And he gets in -- he gets like he gets extra once again the tonight the video game thinly he's living is likely to be redeemed not like very obvious. Younger generations very video games. Being so intertwined with with your life like Richard Roeper just. But I think imperfect captures that age 22 out of school lunch with the argument do fall in love every girl is -- the party and you know like. With take away the whole fantastic -- very true to life that's the a lot of stuff I was going through towards your honor. Stuff I'm not a popular show. But. Dated it was I think that's that is said she was eighteen -- the -- two. -- how potent. Anyway. It's just I think it take -- that the the human element of this so strong yet. And and he says this -- you can see if you go back of the progression of the art business is is if you go back to -- Bred for the -- to be surprised to see much but the -- got a good one. The voice is stronger his writings his writing is better."

" And I think that up at a at the way the way the way he's been story told specifically he's not afraid to. Have have a panel and -- now and and there's like an arrow indicating movement of -- it -- like these these conventions that people really aren't using comments that months you -- of these visual cues that happens we'll let you know also is taking anything on us national breath well and there's a great running kind of commentaries -- you know in terms of like. They'll be little references in -- can explanations and I think that at least it's fun to read it's it's not yet asked congress fully fund -- fun to reread several times in once and it. Not happen now but it it is that he's going to read all four -- as good as is good luck to any movie. And deserve more fun book on the shelves and -- optics. It's and speaking of like movies. All the Kong property and options. Com and we hear that -- tracked. Not actually did. Actually our sources at Hunter College whether it ahead the and and and uses that Michael's era of Arrested Development and Superman theme is is the tests over one up on -- it's. And there that some people like Connor. Our question obviously I don't feel I need to see it and all my take on it is like I I don't see it but like one of these we've settlements terrorism would we he kind of plays itself. --"

" Is that if the laid back to court whereas. With hyper active -- NC have I think he's going to and -- is indeed the challenges if I didn't likes. Like Jack Nicholson being cast somebody who subdued -- I I think in these things that they can't I sent him. Yeah yeah as a kid a super talented and then ran away he gets typecast sort of a bunch of things and -- like well this works of this. If he can break out of this thing a little bit do different you know he's good he's got impeccable comic timing -- his age I mean amazing."

" All I'm less concerned about the Michael -- are casting as more as -- and how is that the video game aspect and translate to."

" That you didn't it is skirts and of it still medium."

" Mostly directed by Edgar -- Of space shot of the dead hot buzz as a forgotten genius is as far as I'm concerned I think there's a lot of potential for to be a different kind of movie and I hope that you hope the Arctic sea missiles will probably ever what you did and -- it's never really makes me for a look you can you can Agassi let you kind of -- fiction have been biographical -- S and Afghan. And this and start making that the that -- the latest heart over his head you know we started an -- that the screen becomes the interface in the video game. At any given time there. Is also to -- and I've seen I've seen stuff that right does become very. -- Admitted no word -- sorry Phil show yeah homelessness is so originally there was -- V6 funds that it's in the seven months I don't. -- Bryan -- takes some time -- it I don't even -- funds and my hopes to please all the way things go over to to -- five era in next year again it's ultimately hogwarts. I. The knicks got her my annual get together with the -- It's of the offense also your 1000 youth activity you know also confident that I am going to -- you can get it's called voice now lives 88 and -- 66 78 year -- planned show -- the -- showed me is what."

" About what they showed up let's got told -- go to the forms -- revision three dot com slash S envoy. Or if there and it sweepstake to check -- our ammunition that was as you know one of three minute version of the show a couple of a couple of things every -- day."

" And finally that I -- but I can't wait to find out all of our video shows our audio podcast comics -- actually talked accounts that you like it's just great fun place to these funds to. Excel on time hot hopefully I'm degree read these all again as well as. Yes."

" Yeah."

" your latest. You read out the."

Episode #74 - "Scott Pilgrim" [Discussion]

Pilgrim is a fave of mine and I really wouldn't have known about it or read it if it wasn't for the iFanboy Community. Everyone raved about it, so I picked it up on a lark...now I loves it.

Bryan Lee O'Malley's got a bunch of online presences that should be explored if you dig his work.

Radiomaru is his homepage that has his blog and a bunch of links to other work he's done.

His flickr page is a personal favorite. It's overrun with pictures of his equally talented wife, Hope Larson, odd sketches and whatever else he feels like posting. Stuff like this:

There's also Scottpilgrim.com, which has a bunch of stuff on it(Avatars, Messenger icons, wallpapers etc). Every now and again it's updated with news. Also make sure you check out Oni's page, which sells most of O'Malley's other work. Oni also has the Free Comic Book Day Scott Pilgrim story available in .CBR format here.

Last but not least, check out the Scott Pilgrim social network, Scott dot Ning and add me as a friend.

This ep was very good. As a matter of fact I added Scott Pilgrim to my IST order immediatly after. It was funny when Conor got called out about dating an underage girl, lie all you want your face told the truth.

Good thing I just read the first SP trade/manga/digest thing last night. I must have sensed this coming.

Like I said I read it last night for the first time, I didn't know that Ifanboy was going to do a show about it today (lucky me). My thoughts before reading SP, okay this is suppose to be weird how weird can it possibly get? Here's what I said out loud to myself after I finished "Wow people weren't kidding, this got weird fast. Good but weird. There is no possible way to describe what happened". I have to wait till Monday for the next one, Amazon split them up on me.

I never understand it when people use 'weird' as a negative. Especially in the context of 'good but weird.' Weird is exciting.

I don't think I used weird in the negative, and I've never got a negative vibe when people told me it was weird. Now that I think about it I guess I kind of did, the word "but" emphasis weird which in this context means it can be construed as negative.

With that said, I don't want to drive people away from the book thinking "Oh he said it was weird". What I'm saying when I use that word is this: It breaks conventions and has a unique voice to it. I haven't seen anything else like it and it does what it does well. It's fantastically, exciting.
