Secret Invasion

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 – running time 26:44
Skrulls! Skrulls! Skrulls! If you were reading Marvel Comics in 2008 it was all about Skrulls because of a little mini-series called Secret Invasion. iFanboy takes a look back at this polarizing mini-series.

Love it or hate it, but if you are a comic book reader 2008 was all about Marvel Comics' Secret Invasion. This week, iFanboy takes a look back at the event that has (supposedly) reshaped the Marvel Universe (again). Did they like it? Did any opinions change upon rereading? What worked? What didn't? Just how many comic books did you have to buy to follow this story? How many rhetorical questions in a row are too many? (Seven).

" Our first issue comes out. Super excited super excited we also had a really get a lot we're excited. Lenient view with great precision -- particularly new you. Really stepping up like doing work that was that was better than what we've been doing previously and and I thought he'd skip that for the whole thing but that's that's that's another time. Basically are even define themselves in the savage land. Ship crash is a bunch of people come outside and it's all of themselves or people who have been -- lost her bed or or her prior versions. And who's who wants him."

" Seventies and office. Causing him issues people were real squirrels and the of the same all right let's say I'm he had alien virus attack cost our technology right so much everything about everything but it can be like the Internet -- apnea which artists to demand the Jarvis wants that and -- we found out that this -- scroll."

" So you have always reveals while -- Wallace should. -- these people that like oh there's some there's -- that for a while others America that America is dead and and then you have multiple real visual sleeper photos."

" Really cool to pull in the seventies design in the arm before that it's I think because what because what you had was this concept of all maybe -- connect these people seventies -- they didn't come back from one of the things. Is this is this how to bring captain America back is that the real Emma frost is that the real you know just did you -- ask you this is a."

" That versus problems revealed it has. She wasn't a scroll that some beware but they have they were protected her but Bennett could -- for -- to drugs and it took her out yet -- power --"

" yet and so and so what happens is that the invasion begins and so while. While the avengers -- an -- and they square off against these. Use these studies avengers and then invade -- this girls are attacking all this and other -- attack. And then obsessed the first issue and then we yet. Five issues that move very slowly --"

" Yeah. It's this. Improvements and we will all complain about that Smith just use that word and it went on I. Still -- them. Apple does what happened was it was a -- on how to tell that's where. There was there was some things that happened to satisfy happened in the main book and that's 45 issues to deal five but the five. And then in the main books new vendors and mighty avengers page. We used those issues the whole time to tell flashbacks of what had been happening before and setting it up -- good thought very much like we were not moving forward whereas in some of the other books but can't there. I'm captain Britain and my thirteen. We were seeing that all of the war seemingly just had asked for -- I we're seeing the war take place and and what I think felt look at this connects to me. Was that there was a war taking place but we didn't see it. In it but the main book there was no way actual war -- right and and so all the suddenly go to these books and all of a sudden like. Time square is on fire and life you know London is being attacked and all these things -- math. Didn't join her."

" This daisy cutters when you read many books you don't put their mistakes going on -- hazardous to wander around the jungles for five rights -- And you did you yourself refused dread because there's there's massive invasion of populist. Then you know their site out -- jungle for for a three quarters of the state of the serious yeah."

" And a lot of the jungle was was fighting these other these other ventures which then led a -- out to be all scrolls there was none of them none of them -- the real heroes Tom and there was a lot of how to run your Russell I don't -- you like about distrust k.s our camera caves are have to get on the net. And that it took them you know until issue five -- six of the series to finally say we gotta go back to New York it was. Arafat's death threats that and I finally said you know -- it we've added up and what happens is that reed Richards is able to you know he got captured. And I can scroll takes a map and he's in he's up in space and he's able to break free after -- waited he says -- Switch the scrolls back to scroll form and telling planet whose we net is as strong as Oscar wants falling elect New York. Big battle -- of the series in New York entire an incentive."

" Parker I think yeah yet again any time before comes back he turns the tide and kept America -- that is that America sort of you know I had to I didn't describe him. It wise guys -- these girls are defeated that's not we're zero dark green right now. If I described the pace of this metaphor that I used as imagine if it is. Early in the year and your dad says oh we're we're gonna take a trip to Disneyland and Disney -- Zealand. It doesn't matter Romans where you live from from there a loan Disney World -- in my car so yeah in Georgia. I'll get back. And and you -- you're excited you. You gotta get to school get a way to get out of school -- going to be great new -- of the car has been a go to sleep and get up in the morning and it takes you eight days the out of the driveway. Yeah that's the whole time he's telling you and what I plan that bought tickets on this day."

" The nation goes."

" back so good yeah. It's just basically a lovely elegant would you. It's all just thinks that but that's also highlighted since did exactly that the point and then in the new drive Disneyland and you hang up for like 45 minutes and Israel. Oh that's fun but it's like those were journey hitting it just takes the the left yet now. Didn't you re read I read them how do you feel about having read the first is -- what loans are what we're reading them. You were very critical of the first law except we we all of number one yet we'll."

" I'm not saying we all the bought around three -- four -- versus a police say an auto show I -- to -- read trade because I could see Gary that problems. The -- house minority leader either of them offer this show just it makes it up a table full of you know -- tie in books I've read all these -- no longer. I thought these firsts. Are here for. We're we're we're quite good. And then it did the pace is diets. For those for the last half of that I didn't like the last half the first half as good. The last half -- just I don't -- anymore but I point discount like all the things were left dangling I don't care about all -- all the things that would be extra about a secret agent. And that -- who's who was just not dealt with it is a bunch of mindless. Fights and things that have enough but finally chip was distant disaster. --"

" You I was -- that now while you read did you like it or not especially adults I liked parts of that that in a moment and he likening. I found that the things that I am that the characters that I like that things that he used. Made me happy I like the stuff that needed to with the Clinton -- a lot. I'm not much but he he's actually -- is central character to the millions that these sort of emerging in the all the -- in the new. So and that should plan the president of the most states -- there is him because. -- in America is his mentor and and sort of best friend and his he's dead and his wife who's who believed to be dead comes off oneself -- he becomes the sort of remote and he's -- and how he thought he was dead he's in the wrong clothes its. But but besides that like I'm just felt like and they say this that we don't need to read everything -- just read the story and I felt they can't. The big you can and you you should. Almost the united without the baggage it's probably different experience of about it it was a very different experience I had fun reading through -- I thought that the pacing in the way that things laid out refined. I think that. They broke the (%expletive) out of Tony Stark I mean this is really about is on engine like -- and you know near the end. It you know scrolls are just toying with them com. -- Well what I think it was interesting is that a lot of sorts of places -- which would have been fine except we were reading about that for five months and for me if you read it that way that you want the story. The story actually is what's happening between those people personally in the savage land. That it wasn't so bad and and having read them -- a row -- came up with a pretty positive feeling out of all I'm enjoying this now and it's rolling -- end you know. Compared I felt about it before I want to collect. -- and so to read it again not mitigated more benefit of the doubt but I think that the pacing on a monthly -- the way this -- from of the issues didn't work to read like Batman. But during this trip through actually I really did well but bitchy as she'd gotten characterization moving well forward. We -- quick break --"

" Thanks to Netflix -- sponsors have sort of iFanboy. With Netflix you can rent over 90000 titles online including -- Blu-ray titles with free shipping both ways to your home. They now have a or forty shipping centers almost all deliveries happens in one business day. And Netflix plans are 49ers -- you can no risk two week free trial membership -- check out every dividend dot Netflix dot com slash iFanboy. And or amber to type in that Deborah Deborah W news in the code."

" So I get from you guys that this is why I eat this stuff up and and throughout the series I would I enjoyed the miniseries and a month to month basis."

" trust the auto show you might differ I -- know assessment."

" What W I I mission -- about but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the I enjoyed the flashbacks things like that. But as I got to the end and it doesn't read it again. I actually. Dislike it more then when it started. And the reason why is that feels this again what happened was that it was a really big idea and a great concept and its bet on Saturday so the biggest in the we're excited that goes into it was -- scrawl that never enough never never paid off. -- You know sorry I'm spider woman was the big one and again that -- vendors have largely been about. Her and what had been happening -- I've grown -- like a great deal read that her reveal wasn't as an outsider. It wasn't it wasn't like surprise regular election was no there was there was no implications this -- their backs relatively as a threat as an the other one's regular conspiracy -- and and I know that they said there they didn't change the ending also Basil plant. I feel like somewhere along the line somewhere it got rushed because what we had was we had this idea of the scrolls mating we have this -- two double page spread of when this -- fully reveal themselves the world and we're taking over. And -- opinions hold on British change campaign ended. Something that. There's going to be this -- occupation that I think in -- is had happened. But in our what we read it happened in between -- and and to me that's where there was V opportunity from -- like the French resistance and Roberts yeah. To occur where the scrolls are occupying that if the earth and -- immediately -- to get -- back of that. I want a bestseller. After that that's different or -- the same old body and high speed photo and and my my biggest lead my biggest kind of -- is more from a marvel kind of moral historical sample it and it. It was a funny gag because -- some hot -- square when their need to find it back to New York and near the don't know Spider-Man -- and Clinton is that well this -- watches and shopping and what I -- you -- really freaked out -- the next panel to watch a show as often as honey. But -- the -- shows up to big (%expletive) deal that's the -- disc ultimate nullify our time I'd never understood want to watch showed up. There was no more there was no point there was no moment to be that needed a consummate ratification yes big battle between two races discipline that put there was no. Why do that -- never left never explained that if you don't like it just it felt as if there was a lot of ideas and concepts have been just wanted to use and couldn't get it all into the issues or. Was to rushed up now that means that they did change in instead what really what I believe might have happened is that. They had this idea port for whatever reason they saw people getting tired of scrolls up in the entire is open and sped up the timeline. That if -- can change that's I think what happens. Whether true or not they'll never tell because of course I think it's more along --"

" Plot out the things that you want to happen is that and you very intimately enough flour then eventually you us I have to finish this yet when you start throwing stuff and I don't think the ending exchange I think. That is too much at all but I think he had too many ideas yes -- and credit amendment -- feel rushed in found in almost almost -- is the whole idea of the five years later he's that was effectively really excited for it and as we get to the end of it doesn't that was number my -- want to -- about the first issue is that I felt like there there wasn't a big reveal now. You know retrospect you know -- comes pretty big deal. He's not another not I'm not he's not factored it comes to what do you like it had to be one of the main. Taught us our. You -- yeah obviously could have been instructed not to obvious but hadn't -- it doesn't change. Yeah something like that we still have that dangling sometimes -- zoom -- kids just as babies on death was. That would those red -- forced us and it has maybe got kidnapped -- so we don't know for me the when the end -- beginning at first the Dixie Israel what are the shipman whom what's happening -- in the same thing happens and -- this -- acceptance yet. Yeah the is -- it ends with the."

" With -- coming down in the real dumb down in the real spider woman in the real pain can get -- and I was like -- you're okay it's like this just happen. You like ten minutes ago. Time I don't in the that with -- tough -- to and then stuck to decompress story telling them -- as fast enough for the time -- from issue one to issue me for us is eight months and in the storyline in the north like it was like -- day -- to -- the united that he wasn't. You know it wasn't that -- you know -- you're -- it really doesn't read better all want."

" Ironically I liked it up until that what deception cricket I know."

" You -- capitals out of time. -- This actually really good -- that is some good mood maybe you know I mean within a matter and that all depends on how you look at a whole classes of mistakes that -- and nothing happens. I'm gonna hold the fury building -- home of the teams that that was the initial an -- Yeah. -- And that wasn't all that important but when your reading history through a big deal doesn't make it doesn't make the same impact now just like civil war. I feel like at the end of this we are left with a place. That is more understand. Maybe interest that. I I would have confirmed I mean against us write a story -- you -- refer -- scroll occupation so sorry I didn't. Different eyes you know until I think I would have gotten really tired of that -- like it would and everything like that season battle some of them. I'm glad that season -- hand woven in the thing is we've all been mired in this is such a long time and it would take a year to get out of that."

" And an -- that said what does Lindsay is basically like we said it ended with with Norman Osborne -- kill shot on. On the scroll queen and NBA lottery is here I'm getting handed the keys obtained and that is that a shield also on the -- or presented the respect he's an initiative. It feels it everybody else arts and entertainment head of the avengers it already is and it ends in the last ends with him walking into a dark room and there's Doctor Who named Moran -- he and the red hood and we okay. It's joker yet let's and got a gun okay so the zealots going to be and it's idea of the star phenomenon in a darker and I'll find out. The intriguing yet just until I think that's a great place to go it just I just feels that got to to quickly. One that you want to add about this is that again you know but nobody is arguing that this is ability to write dialogue will be some -- in -- is. Writing scenes are some specific scenes here that we're in Great Britain went when Jarvis and -- on how the carrier CNET grace -- who went on the that's the finals when the final shoot out starts and it's a whole he loves you and god wants this and nick fury saying oh my god cares Aaron and sore right there like there's some great moments that we're like marble all you you know -- yes yeah yeah yeah south they deliver on that."

" As far as acting I think premier big for that moment it couldn't hurt a think that's a big thing that hurt the -- was finally should be told. From the future that. Bad about that that was like last night it takes you out of the stakes because it's already happened yet we know we know it's already happened so nice to -- watching a documentary about what happened in renovated site it's. Doesn't it does it takes emotionally from -- old --"

" But in the end of the day like like. Doesn't deliver on stuff like give you -- hormones are talking about do you think you just things changed then moved around and you know like Tony Stark and is busted down. You know and and pictures that couldn't pictures -- give us stuff to talk and argue about an opinion and they like what's more fun and comic books and doing those things loses big inning. -- comfortable talking up people excited and you know. I've read mad comics now these are bad -- The disappointment that."

" Nice is different baton disappointment for that he was also built up to such a level then again how whether true or not yet in -- I think the first format that level didn't and then I think it's dorktones idea change."

" I think and honestly think of the point is that when that double page spread when times were missiles that's -- I think that's the point where changed discipline or something half something happened at -- is process that point where something changed. And I know what it is the that's smugly if you are conspiracy not only can."

" This it was an engaging action adventure for the first half a second half of scum like detached. You know slugfest sort of know go to me dangling face. After DR was much tighter in the beginning of his loving --"

" Fred totally unique they kept it and -- the -- shipped two weeks late but it won't want to replay it. And lose those longer issue that in all the -- should -- pots and turn that civil war. Success I'll give them that -- Thanksgiving and it's a person's health policy crazy. Hook. But yeah. Yes I mean that your I mean I think you're right to a certain degree that for me -- marvels army in the -- kind of thing I enjoyed reading all these books and -- excited -- At the end of this that given them a little disappointment but. I'm I'm excited the dark green. Authorities -- the finding is that I keep buying into like at the end of civil war I was excited for the initiative right like I live right about now I'm a little disappointed. We did this homicide after dark green you know like its its Internet the end of -- treat me about I was except perhaps you know like I like these kind of things -- into this it's this is Alanis attacks this is the old classic stuff that we know that I mean if you go back and read -- war this is a joke compared mix regularly and task yet -- to do what you're trying to do so so here's a question and as we wrap up -- time. Should he kept it to just within the images books or should it become big company wide cross over -- of us you know on the reliably."

" That's -- and the others is really understand. Like that I think from the black and there's stuff was -- was fantastic -- to get Catherine and I thirteen out of that I'm trying to think of a lot of great stuff in an upcoming ridiculous story of an -- C television's good you know late in the you know the individual issues of the new avengers work we're kind of understand. I I like parts of never never done by also to different people then choose good. On some of whom met and another is but it did them the main complaint Atkinson was that they. Pulled us backwards and I wanted to go for it definitely modeled the whole process and I think it's gotta be some way to read them differently I wonder if they had done the even though final press pass. Time issues that still mainly you going to regret I want to update just on the secret agent. Orphanage has been in the pages and -- it might well then that he would have had that this is going to affect everybody check which which makes it smaller ball and the one thing I do a damn about them was the classic marvel covers them -- yeah apparently tired after nine months so solemn."

" That secret invasion it was taught me good for good about it was the talk of comments for this for 2008 it was what everyone was talking about -- you know. Marvels of success that part of it it printed money for him Jesus and yeah."

" He's had success in that regard so if you haven't Casey division if you did repulsion send us an email contact but I am an accomplice Lee thank you can call and and tell us what you think cut editing and annoys -- in his voice 3262697."

" Like you're hostage ridiculous and for the it's based data that's. Did it for days and then you can compact and what com -- discussion deceiving argues that division to death I know there are many people with many strong opinions on the results differently messages by the way what is says we'll vacated we all just ultimately -- So combat Telecom an average of three to accomplish a framework of a description there. Go forth when the most hotly debated things all you're on a seminar Thomas admission every -- this cannot discussions -- 11 can tell you. And I'm I'm very much like at all. This is -- for it that's what straddling the corners of revenue and over time -- and that's settled ordered him that night."

" 32. No one knows who started sixth apple started. -- take -- to the ball. --"

" War."

I say conspiracy talk about changing storylines in response to fan reaction should stay on 11 o'clock Comics where it belongs! Maybe Ron needs to grab a drink and do a guest spot.

Questions:

Did the marketing blitz of "Accept Change" hurt the event by advertising a storyline that didn't and won't exist?

The artistic choice to write the last issue in past tense allowed the succinct coverage of many, many events. Almost like reading an outline instead of a full story. If told conventionally, how many issues would it take to complete the miniseries?

Considering that much of the backstory happened in the Secret Invasion Avengers books, if someone wanted to read the event in standard fictional chronology, in what order should the books be read?

great discussion. i wasn't a fan of the Secret Invasion main books. i guess when the trade comes out, we can only hope for a commentary from Bendis about the writing process and see if he had to make any significant changes to fit the story into 8 issues. i would've been fine if they simply did 12 issues for one full year.

i'm gonna have to side with Ron and his theory about this.

I thought a lot of the character stuff were pretty good,(hawkeye, stark etc) but ultimately, many of the great set-ups just never paid off.

Nice show guys,

A couple of things, there was a Skrull Ms. Marvel running around in her book, so Cho wasn't entirely wrong sketching one at a con.

Also, did we EVER find out what was in that damn closet that Clint looked in from New Avengers? Did I miss that reveal? Just curious.
