Superhero Costumes

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 – running time 24:26
The most obvious way to tell you're looking at a superhero is by the costume. This week iFanboy talks capes, masks, tights, leather, boots and pouches.

When creating a superhero, there is perhaps no element more important than the garb they wear. In comics, the costume is the first thing people see, and the quickest way to make an impression. The creator's responsibility is to create a suit that's both eye-catching and reasonably functional looking. Done right, a design can last decades and become an essential part of the cultural fabric, like Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man have become. Others can become jokes that create laughter for years to come.

Josh, Ron, and Conor talk about the best and the worst costumes out there, as well as their favorites, and what goes into making a great superhero costume, and what didn't work about the worst.

" it's funny how many of the cost him that we see today are still around. I suppose ended but the little tweaks we were talking about and Costa before. You know and originally. -- smaller years he said he had regular clothes on yeah he's got a whole. You know gauntlet now despite his gloves. And it's little boots and the image and there was an. It -- because it'll Bob black bat which they -- to the yellow back. Let's face -- yet but felt original about a little utility -- Big big utility belt is really interesting to me because it got really high tech for a bit -- it like it looked like a Star Wars bill would -- little. Capsule that -- or a top to bottom and today he's back to little house yeah. But the -- and doesn't even his -- crowds tracking Miller's Dark Knight treatment that was bringing the first time bring it back he would have you had. Cartooning ultimate. Original podcast that -- has via options and it's funny that he'd like he would like that's what Batman players now like he's he's got how to --"

" What I think is a disease that is that he ET takes a look he's a stock options in that manner very narrow flash since it that are a lot of Monica -- And it was time for the nineties Heather's bad periods and it. Look at their all these classic costumes like that men like daredevil like it's -- war and the -- mix it up to admit that looked different and it just didn't work. You know like the idea that as real bat -- and then -- Macintosh and exactly and you know and and and it's what's funny is that then if you also look at other characters agree now for example green -- had a very you know the so -- very simple it was agreed shirt in the hood the Robin -- had in this thing that and then in the seventies Neal Adams -- little little more -- to look that we -- Could see this and the -- that would be hard things yes and then what -- with a call for best actor rob --"

" And then but then if you look in the eighties Mike Brown took a step further added the hood and it was a little darker but still had the -- some of -- exact --"

" And that's been different but -- busy working or to rob he works with the hood but. For some reason -- you know you can change as a drastic change it and whoever it is and isn't going to."

" Yes and it's funny to see how how you know the coaching changes is the like Spiderman for example you know classic the red blue and in the she's the black. Which everyone laughed at and -- good decide it's not exactly the -- is not yet exactly and a black and white as I still evokes a few units yet. That the then -- in the polls I've been ages have been running their variations on it and hated it you know it was awful -- that -- Medicare and wolverines who started with the yellow and blue kind of those boots at the big spikes is the things that came up the net and the mask and then for whatever reason or another reasoning of all the to a brown version of that is the same --"

" Yeah it is there tiger -- anywhere yet and and whiskers in any god. He went to the more -- as a functional Lou less show you what you understand that's when I got really popular and then let's beyond. After that we want to video loop Tom what you're going to call my muscles religiously is the so in the eighties he went."

" He would be involved the yellow blue accustomed to the to the ten of brown -- ended with a big red bills are unhappy with the belt but don't buckle."

" And then in the early nineties originally -- to -- this ultimately went back teal yellow blue for real pretax back."

" Back to original costumes yeah but it was the same caution -- the color engineer. Now we're -- days in Cassidy is design is as a kind of merging of the two and more."

" Much less than mobile and the thing about that back into over a couple of the really good one because. That brings to the question now functionality yet and that he had those big things is to -- the big stick -- it has no point. Yet I've only given appointment with the but but I think it's quite silly and that it is when you think about Logan as there he's not sit. -- I think that the thing about the the ninety's he talked about is all the sudden everything had pouches. Contrasts. But it also had just a lot of superfluous stuff but didn't need to be there and I think I'm putting my head is that it isn't thinking about the war costs down which is like this deal. And then around it like these guys need and parties face that is -- data management and added some because of our artists who were destroyed."

" Pads and pouches and tiny ankles and then you know and and not anesthetic is the -- you don't like sold."

" Yes we will -- or whatever who discusses cuts from the very simplistic even though the penalties patches and and."

" Anything to get Tom to decided you know what. The stuff that's worked for generations. But we're gonna change it all that. If you tried every wouldn't cost him some -- and it cost him back to constant going to -- minor cuts and store them every one. Got changes and eventually they all came about because they're all."

" But he's the reason they were doing that because every month they were trying to come up with something -- said the -- first that that this electable I think what I think this is especially if you read that was the theme of the whole decade right I don't want -- just one recently big -- defense Captain America can't -- changed -- now -- the mantle and into different happened our cost him. What do you think of it. Figures ocostas reflect on. -- remove some works it's a good -- I'd still like oxy fuel costs Michael didn't. You know it doesn't I don't mind it because it's not Steve Rogers. Let's also functional what you -- it it is functionally we talked about like he's not Islam but is that to -- soldiers got one robot arm right. And so that it's it's like metallic that I see yeah. Goes yes he -- the tumor is reminiscent of this of the golden -- shield you know -- it and it makes more sense practically and also like I understand in the red gloves but you know the actual Captain America constant sort of underwent a change it evolved large chain mail. Wasn't written -- when it went in there tomorrow might start series started and two. It you can -- columns and you see that change now little more whatever it is like this layer stuff and they can play better and yet they like that from then on then on May also change the -- fight and more like he seems seems to -- and -- like -- I think came from the the alternates yet. Brian this is a lot of that words like do -- on the bright future in in the ultimate was that you could opt. Dalton's more so than any of -- I could see those options being warned that people because you saw scenes install that was the point and anybody is a good example let's talk back yes. I don't like the ultimate Hawkeye -- but didn't hit it real life. I would rather wear that Costa that in the purple tunic. Purple and blue -- you don't put together you don't wear purple and blue together you know this but -- in the colors but -- suddenly he's -- so there. Yeah but it's that he does weird medieval thing plumbers got down like that rings video archer and exams. When -- in his boots is book is -- I didn't -- those boots. What were always have my favorite -- element but yeah what was somebody else."

" Then -- has the best. -- but what I do it to cut cost is accommodation all of the things in comics that and that like it's all of them together to keep it should work. No it's the gloves that have -- the Captain America -- that this sort of did not answer in death often wrenching images X-Factor is the X-Men. You almost don't have. Are always changing costumes yet again don't have their favorite yet but they don't have what is the iconic."

" Well what's interesting is that -- the excellent and -- they've all said the school uniform which is the yellow and brown who had the yellow going into the blue black whatever almost certain variations. And now with the ex logo and then. It's almost -- when they when they're young and they wear that costume and then when they -- their -- they become an individual have the -- variations like colossus has had in -- colossus is is that the red and -- that goes to the -- points and he's got the -- but for awhile -- hundreds he had -- more Russian. A -- with the with the political over here you know I've had then what love where I am an astonishing as the old one but it was a variation it was again. The big yeah. Is it that passes very very slightly modernize drilling but it was is seen -- a looks like -- got his -- is the -- with the -- all happened and then kind underwear thing but not my favorites -- customers in the hair was flowing into the the good message that he. We'll with a -- we've always."

" Finally though this adviser that he can do with a head thing without -- that without gas supplies there and then it goes into the the thing here and in the yellow. The American bar yeah like I like outlook but -- like he tried. Has never had a consistent customers higher -- when you ask and what if we know doesn't it doesn't do you know. That's our mercy and that's had a -- again that's only -- like balance there's also what that's what I mean right -- these people up. Exactly big big makes excellent mix it up I think the most -- that -- going to just let the people that complain -- like the movie comes out or whatever it. -- this cuts like men and and and say you will never complained about. Toughness for the movie the way of I think to find. I didn't want the ones. You -- of the remarks romance than that I agreed with was. Put in -- street clothes the middle of the jacket make them unique and they can walk around although there there are street clothes losing way the yellow exes is right."

" I just wrap this sucker up votes -- what's your favorite music. On this are -- when it was funny wrap this sucker up and -- I listen to -- are the favorite at least there -- favorite. Marbles union Jack. Who could -- Glad with -- I do have an affinity for the full height full head -- we can see the mouse. This kind of suck you know and you like that that's a look at -- wants kind of like out of them. Com so that's when they're his least favorite. He's dead he's -- Jack of hearts and in -- And a gold in the one heart eyes click that adds those in the past yes -- another good site."

" You know. That's -- come out you need to that I like that are the opposite ends of the spectrum. We mentioned tax master report and come up always love that costs are lining up front like the character like that is not a good guy or bad guy -- but. And he told me of a good with a -- a -- makes no sense I don't know no one needs the tape but it's like a big. And he's got to straps it's got those boots is an taskmaster that's -- to testify. And -- like literally it's one of my favorite trusted him whenever it's here I get very happy to James Robinson's department. Which is dumb as the result of the ways he went crap I have to be a superhero -- list jacket do you like going in this man. And have these these goggles that work and could it yeah. It is the sheriff's office specifically chosen the abroad -- it big long one as opposed to the hand held one and it'd just like from us they just works so much better and it flies around -- the rod you know that and that really accidents on the clintons so what this should give -- now what it. When I look at some crisis. And I see that Alexander Luke four and cycle -- the."

" It's got those debates that the primary the Harley Quinn and I hate that was going to decide -- part how to looks like you judge obviously did you hearts it. Besides that's like a pirate action figures it's a lot of work that looks like a pirate."

" Get the gold master changes all right targets the day. But the how does that look like go down."

" Yeah for me about ones are almost two reviews fiction fiction well what you think any ninety's we design or cost -- star. Yes what I was in the nineties or supplements because they're -- yes I was -- was that like with the -- thing or. Those and again he has all the chops have allowed just I regret any great ones are also kind of give me like the Superman of iconic design -- a specific -- design I loved that hasn't Rendell has been. Tweaked a little as we go forward to make it work like you know the shield sort of it's bigger or smaller than that it's come variation in. And I think that management candidate just -- it's it is. I'm almost has not changed since sixty years the government really loves that he's kind of aside to say is the seven these victories tonight wearing custom I think that. So distant distant. All I have lots of the."

" You know --"

" I was electronically and -- I really I really do like mad men's fashion. The white with the Red Bull with -- example but this is what that has been consistent you know it like it works and it is done. Is that -- mask. I think it's a man I think it's a mess you know."

" Reason yeah I -- literally about one the dot -- had a few. Who and what she had the short hair in chemical skirt and I thought she had like an old black shoulder -- It was she would like it took her route generally great red red cuts have been mentioned earlier Blackwell -- thank you for this -- it's sort of create hybrid where she had a really backdoor camel hair cut and kind of flair about it and -- had a skirt -- do just that bad."

" I -- when you're gonna love. -- jailing of black canary. That's Cavallo. And then head band and the blue black and Larry coming election manhunt is kind of thing."

" Yeah sorry you didn't read it acts it was then edit. -- flash worked fine yeah. Plus is ready and I love how simple none of the subtle differences between the flash is there are valuable legs yet whether that's a yellow and you want."

" line the best cots and other symbols customers who didn't see it too much in there and there are exceptions have -- pretty busy but like. Usually the flash is Atlantis out of one red flags and green lantern bright the basic yet. The help -- then map their -- meetings for try to get a guy Gardner what which I could. Possibly put my bad list them but just fits through the black community and did yeah does yeah. Just like yeah."

" What oddly was very ninety's was I love I love -- angels' arch Angel that blue and pink -- can see that kind of thing I don't ladies I really like that I don't I don't let your Superman. And perhaps it's not it's an interest and that blue book peninsula with the red -- I don't winter hundreds -- economy then."

" The funny thing is I wanna change a little thing like like green that's awesome is classic but but recently the -- edges of the thing have been."

" and I just can't see it it was dreamed. And then I don't quite -- agreed to shoulders and I went back to read over it and now they're backed him to keep going back and -- that the."

" But the actual logo itself on the logo so classic and it's on my to him that I think -- shave in the world agreement what do you think semester is classic sinister -- the blue pill. Those applied to. Yeah about yes exactly let him go -- job redundant. Those will that is absolutely. Me -- did you just hours yeah so what please continue now. Tell us what you think your favorite passions are -- eagle's comeback and I am going to come and you call us and you can describe what -- wearing. Edwards 32626 might drive him. And get to iFanboy dot com and then comment on this this want to go for awhile yet. Okay local buses loaded yeah just what I'm gonna think up and then getter isn't there -- class iFanboy. Four more videos and performs there."

" I mean do I -- groups -- yeah. Like that idea award for you still want them so bad there's no way no pull -- okay. And is notable welcome boots this is a little -- visited a model -- innocence upgrade it boots and it's like. Yeah he crosses. Big belts have they've been handled this like everything that we'll let the whole other show this."

" It's missing an iFanboy go to -- for with the."

" War. I can't. Who is it I don't know."

" Back to original costumes yeah but it was the same caution -- the color engineer. Now we're -- days in Cassidy is design is as a kind of merging of the two and more."

" Much less than mobile and the thing about that back into over a couple of the really good one because. " Then -- has the best. -- but what I do it to cut cost is accommodation all of the things in comics that and that like it's all of them together to keep it should work. Are always changing costumes yet again don't have their favorite yet but they don't have what is the iconic."

" Well what's interesting is that -- the excellent and -- they've all said the school uniform which is the yellow and brown who had the yellow going into the blue black whatever almost certain variations. Episode 115 - Superhero Costumes [Discussion]

Ain't that the truth.

All kidding aside, it was a fun show on a topic so obvious it's rarely discussed.

Iron Man is an example of character whose costume changes repeatedly. I think the idea of multiple suits was introduced just to explain the changes. Going back to earliest days, as soon as Tony changed from the yellow armor to the Ditko-designed yellow and red, it seemed like no artist was happy with the status quo. Although the suit stayed the same, the helmet was constantly changing. There must have been discussions in the office because constantly changing the look of a character flies against common practice.

Another costume change worth a mention is the new Thor which has a really cool, practical feeling about it.

Spider-man definitely started out red and black. There were cool Ditko panels where he was in complete darkness and only the red parts of his costume were drawn. Highlghts always seem to take over black.

Another example is Daredevil. When Wally Wood redesigned the costume it was black with red highlights, almost suggest a velour material which doesn't seem practical for crimefighting. It was definitely a red costume though and the blacks quickly retreated.

One of the worst costumes of the Silver Age was Giant-man's change to a blue helmeted monstrosity. He was probably better off as Ant man.

Man there are so many superhero outfits..

Taskmaster is a great costume. but i'm gonna have to go with my boy Deadpool. very regular Red & black good costume. There are so many bad costumes I can't even begin to imagine. It probably doesn't count but I'm gonna say worst SuperHero Costumes would be the cast of 1997's Batman & Robin lol

Despite the fact that the X-men have switched costumes a million times. I would say there is an iconic look.

The costumes they wear in 90's cartoon.

Edit: Just to kind of say some more. The X-men were arguably most popular during that time. Not only that but most of the video games and materials from the time came in these versions. Add the fact that most games that come out now still have them in these outfits, I really think when most people think of the X-men those costumes come to mind as "THE" costumes.

Dont ask me why but I also love this costume. But I know it's regarded as a bad one, especially for Spider-Man.

Shocked josh didnt mention Hawkeye's brilliant stage of his career:
