The Audience Demands It: Deadpool, Locke and Key, Secret Six
Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 running time 29:52
We asked the audience what comics iFanboy wasn't paying enough attention to, and now we're back with our reviews on Deadpool, Locke and Key, and Secret Six
There are all sorts of comic books out there, and while Ron, Josh, and Conor get to a lot of them, there are always series that slip through the cracks. The iFanbase responded with lots of titles, and we picked the top 3 and gave them a spin.
Ron starts off with his take on Marvel's Merc with the Mouth, Deadpool. Plenty of readers have reacted well to Daniel Way's mix of humor action, and self-aware antics. What will Ron think?
Conor was assigned the fan favorite horror story from IDW, Locke and Key Volume 1 Welcome to Lovecraft. Writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez crafted a tale that's got reader creeped out all over. Did it work the same spell on Conor?
Finally, Josh pulled the most requested book, Gail Simone and Nicola Scott's Secret Six. Now an ongoing after some much beloved mini-series, fans have fallen in love with this group of villains working together. Did the audience have it right that the blend of comedy, romance, and hijinks will win Josh over?

" Who's a deal with this was a mind that -- and it let me let them pick why did we do that. -- this approved. Optimum age I was involved democracy is a stab. I've -- was brought to you by godaddy.com and netflix.com. And what the public discussion show. My name is Connor I'm Ron and I am Josh. There are a lot of people about -- dot com website who lots of how to read a lot of books because we can't read everything. And and occasionally. We start hearing the same titles come aboard -- you're reading this while you're reading was and get a lot of suggestions that salt alcohol and we try to it it's worked out a pass probably also reading felt for example though because they that checkmate because people said. This is great need to get on that and actually fear agent who has -- it was yeah it originally from the readership that's. So news. Yeah so you don't need it and this is I -- we hadn't done that awhile. Taken suggestions. And so we put a threat on the site it said. Hey audience what is that you want because we are nothing if not your loyal servants this mostly numbers look at our pants and then so. Lots and lots of people put in their their two cents sometimes eight to fourteen cents to that and again and again and again I -- you one vote count in apple is and our resident statistician. -- of."
" we had over 380. Votes overall hundred books the whole different books -- vote now. -- and the three so we get out all the votes we picked the top three vote getters in each one of us read one and so looks are roughly a third I'd vote getting book which was."
" Dead -- So -- dead pool is that it's a recent recently lost title its its its first year at our Cox and has a lot he had every you know really enjoying it. Those who don't know dental is he was -- about -- I felt we -- back in the days and mutants and he's that guy the ring and rid of the black guy is. Mercenaries and he was exclusively here decrees from. -- And -- come -- a bad -- assassins amber you know mercenary and overtime it was a building was partly weapon X program as well Leslie Wilson is -- generator powers the wolverines on the technical stuff. And and in the late night -- Joe Kelly and it does have a hands underneath what is now considered legendary run which -- in the the -- with the south. Which is where he was over it was a little bit previously before the that would solidify that it was funny he was funny he was announced he is talking all the time cracking jokes and Obama kind of stuff and then over the years has been a lot of work that Poland and brought forth won't talk about them on -- shows lost and -- And -- Australia. -- I don't remember jokingly invited -- or -- correcting this lately on. But that's another hallmark of the character -- so over the past couple years he for a little while for a couple years shared titles -- Fullerton and pool table -- together and then now it in you know we're Madden we're about less than a year -- this is -- title was written by hand away -- popular idea. And just like ten tons of people Borg like that. And so I know men and I grabbed issues forced through eight which is where where it's five issues of this restaurant I -- British is one through three although I heard those were the best of them. So far prefer that's just as confined I'm I can punish -- actually you look on marbles online comics and all the issues there for par there and try it and company should be free. And -- ultimately try -- anymore. But to the first three issues actually -- an invasion tied it in and actually in the background story for how Norman Osborn got the information on the scroll scroll scroll -- mean. I had a killer. And basically military higher -- fun to infiltrate the scrolls on its mission give it to them or not we're intercepting that information and apparently used -- killer. Totally it's totally not apparently missing invasion story but if you were reading it apparently needs -- means -- genetic legacy Apple's great. Fortunately I need the issues I ran walker it's been good deal that. Whitney got is you've got busy didn't weigh in writing and and cool the way he's been written. And so there's a lot of that sounds that environment inner monologue -- generation. And talking to himself. On there was a third voice that was in a different colored narration box is a white box of the different font. Whenever you and a third bush was linked -- is dead pool that will hand in this third -- we'll talk to each other budget which happens a lot to. Now want to. But that this this is read where. Kind of madcap adventures -- one problem was he gets hired by the need money after good mixture that he hasn't paid. He's got money always got is a lot of C four of which makes chair just kind of money so -- and there. Andy calls this guy is he who hires him to go find his wife who's been abducted by doctor who's turning these in her turn townspeople zombies -- is an excellent thing. And so he goes profitable venture and it's it was a two issue kind of -- That you know that had a lot of explosions on snappy dialogue. And after that he comes back in tiger shark. That balance of Summers hunting him down as tight end our brains out you -- the norm Osborne seems to me. Wants to kill -- pool did pulled an intern wants to build -- more information comes from -- and get paid. And Atlanta often to a cross over the fumble which lists is in voicing conflict. So I mean. If does that but I'd get why people like that because you know there were some funny there's some humor there's a lot of actions a lot of explosions a lot of guns a lot of winning banter that sort of thing. But for me. It wasn't I mean it it felt a blogger -- of the emotional television you know stuff around it just it it it. So I've heard and read before. Not nothing was terrible the terror -- winning like he actually can -- be tying. Traditionally there's there's all these movie references lines but like. Totally obvious it's not like not any really good ones -- now. Just that the source in general what he didn't wait a lot of time shifting where do you like twelve hours ago NBC let you two pages them well what was happening and now. And see what are you track and but. But that's a really well it's really smooth and elegant and this was just really herky jerky and left more questions like Amazon actually going back we don't know what. Okay we're told are snapped when he -- and -- and now in the so the time shifting felt -- when necessary but it didn't it didn't reveal some great plot point that I was like oh clever I see -- is that -- So I mean I can see why people might be good comics and the character like the character. Would would be into it on if that's the case I was strongly recommend picking up -- get this stuff and there's been a lot of that though all the stuff. Many -- character that's great for me it's one of those things where I can take a crossover but I don't like him enough to spend. You know the 2399."
" On the -- why do you think she has such a fervent. Fan base of people who like their pool re right that I I think because he's not so this is not the typical book as well he's -- guy or bad guys these cameras and I. He's -- for self Trenton peso -- had any sort of."
" Moral. Code -- most of the bad guy you know like -- the have all the have a line they don't cross they will shoot a baby now. Okay speed dating normally doesn't assassinations but he doesn't sometimes I think it is it's -- do that. Trip that assassin anyway but I mean. I don't -- what are a lot of explosions this basic question. What's dead -- deal he isn't the weapon isn't a weapon X program would what's -- power of these in Newton. You know he's mean he's -- powers and Nelson -- healing factor factors that is only mutant power on -- as far you probably -- public opinion as far as and I think that's the case -- support -- and he's -- he's got to be integrating the shot he's got he's -- to drug use of fourteen counties but his -- is -- it is -- definitely at a -- point is on the issue is obviously you know -- and -- can -- versus -- it and it cancer two point. Yeah I mean it was a lot of retraining and that was that was zombies. Like you think. Still some some fans like him like yeah likely isn't -- Net that is suddenly. As a -- late and has no no not saying that's yours and you might -- and if that you know like and because I -- see you or of the humor some of the dialogue when it gets rolling when he does -- You know got kind of funny and like there's a -- bomb the highest rate. You know ours yet yeah yeah it literally there's -- and then he's been named Bob yeah so Wally. Monitor -- monitor yes it's like so it's you know it's a lot of things like that or an egg -- see that check boxes that get checked off or Anderson. But it it doesn't. It's me it's a meal that sounds very nice but doesn't necessarily satisfied. Right exactly that I don't think I'd like this book and yeah Linus van in its its its I think the humor mid juxtaposition of the humor and the violence is probably what -- is a distraction is that it's a funny action. People throw the word like well it's a funny book and they'll say we'll just you like it you're -- must be -- different kinds of humor out there right. And that's like a -- installs a bombastic kind that is not really -- things so much that I yet another book to talk about after the break."
" I've -- was brought to you by godaddy.com. Web hosting from godaddy includes 99 point 9% up time 24 sevenths support and free access to hosting connection the place to install over thirty free applications should have -- the most from your hosting plan and web site. If you want to make an impact online godaddy.com is what you need dot com names starting as low as one dollar and 99 cents plus world class hosting fast and -- web site builders and much more make sure to check our vision three dot com slash GoDaddy for all of -- him was godaddy deals and codes."
" So it doesn't sound like you're gonna be no I would not be reading diving back into the dead pool -- target are not good enough. That I didn't let them -- okay hurry electors right eight and it is right and we've -- to -- the man exactly what about his tirades against people on message for. Anyway so the next one off."
" The second highest vote getting book was blocking key. -- that we have here. I've heard amazing things that yes this is the this is this the second coming of comics -- key is provided WMR Mitchell hill who is Stephen king's son. Which I love that he's going to zone which is admirable to them and its -- core book which. You we don't mess so there are a lot of horror books here I don't think there's not one of us would consider ourselves horror fan I'm -- or -- also not sort of and dislikes or a -- let him go. Good horror. And I don't necessarily. The great thing about or is sort of -- little more well more like humor can mean different things there's going to south theirs you know these days or tends to mean."
" Very graphic very violent murder. Mayhem or zombies person comics so when I heard I think he's been horrible my mind is all right. I'm not really get into that but. We have a lot of credit everybody you talked to -- read this book really loves that mr. so this is a second that's going to book a ticket the straight and it was really good it was really strong -- and the thing about the depth of the type of thing about the the book is it it's a horror. It's more -- it's hard not to make the president has been some sort of classic Steve king in that there's a murderer. And he's crazy but he's also being driven by experience but it's not like there's monster popping up closets or zombies -- the suspect. This family was terrorized this murder it was such prison he gets out of he he -- a prison. And he's come back it's -- family and its horror in that sense like. Oh my god there's a silicon and again prevent us until it."
" The the first page it basically starts off what is a real life sort of were there I have read have it happens I expected up to and I don't like for like -- like kind of avoid it so. I was I was curious though -- kind of want to know what it's all you know. For the very first first two pages like oh yeah and it's not warm monsters. Supernatural or it's. What -- really bad people came to your house and it really horrible things to your friendly and they start off with a raid away and it and and that that's almost sounds exploitative but it doesn't really feel that."
" Not -- thought overly gruesome in his blood yeah it's murder scenes but it's not like it's all over because he's gone forever but. They're there the mystic elements are the family is. Just. Big bad things happen the -- prime numbers move across the country to escape the notice. And they. They they. Moved to this old family house that's different generations and there's all these different rooms and -- all the strange keys and and that's the misspoke becomes certainties opened -- do certain things when you walk through them right and one of the little tidbit that was discovers. You open -- dornin for you you die. If -- your body that you you've come out as a spirit you can go back and your body but -- that falls over dead and your spirit of free to wander. And she's able to you know one or does -- seem everybody's going to seal the emotions from Switzerland and then he finds the spirit has been. Behind the murders from the beginning -- it's. It's creepy more than scared yeah but I special special creeped out afterwards because it's a lot of very effective were right in that. They get over the top."
" It's very subtle a lot of ways than one of the things he said and we talked about this was that. It's a good comic book yes on the and anything is. Regardless of -- Or what's going on how well. A well made comic book oh well plot -- story -- yet it's very true. On the and I found that he really -- I found myself really impressed by the actual mechanics of the pages in the and the plot the pacing analyst John."
" Even -- the spots early and it's very well as if he isn't having that transitional problem people -- comics with and it still does not overridden. -- not too many panels you that's usually the two things people -- to comics are still too much in the papers but it's very well."
" Is -- a lot of on pages where does not a lot of dialogue and and like things will be going on in the background of the panels that's the good things are actually supposed to be paying to actually -- out. -- Stuff like that using -- down and then and then not to give Joe hill all the credit but give or Rodriguez. And I'm I'm not familiar with."
" Not on his art and what you you took the horrible to have art like Jason Alexander you know. The guys did some of the art and -- are also some of the unions and create your view for very sketchy dark yet. Moody but layers layers let them almost cartoonish it's almost liberals and yeah yeah yeah that this so it that -- exposition what's happening in the page because. You'd use it's clean it's it's nice lines and also he is a great job with characters they all have -- faces and looks that. And they all bill notions of that and they act well and you've been failing numbers look what they're related in both helping the same."
" I mean there are so they're all basically normal white people without superhero costumes and -- and there's lots of male figures and is a really good job of distinguishing who they are the only thing it. On some -- it in this is I don't know if this is just the latest on sometimes hard towel somebody supposed to be yes they they go ahead and they tell you because like the kids have an uncle and he looks like he's about the same age as them but you have to be older. But they think it."
" Aaron Hill poker is only when those -- yet. We're not. Well formed right. Like creepy vibe to him in the -- little bit above. Which was strange in this one page that one agents like editor together yet but still it was -- it was really solid I was really happy that Bob -- read this. This is the the first traitors out with the first meeting. For the first our our evidence that's got their evidence that the about it -- on bookmark ribbon and the second. That's in place that happens is that it evangelist I don't -- to legal analysts are yet you're gonna keep it and trade yet but it looks like having the entire story yeah. I like having these Beatles about the late one night and read the whole thing through to the -- and -- once I think the next are happening now. So it's as good policy on issues yes not totally and didn't waste any time in getting this -- outside them. -- I did everything we do good work at -- S I recommend it's it's not just for our -- just disagree it's one of the best but discoveries -- red blood reliable. That's I will be audience I will be really more like he'd probably trip. It's those audience one. And what one. -- win if we don't exhibit at the -- and that we -- let's say we don't break I had let it be great to -- evidence."
" Oh Netflix honestly where would -- be without you thanks for sponsoring this episode of iFanboy you can -- over 100000. Plans start from four dollars and nine cents and as a new member you get a no risk two week free trial membership check it out at www. Netflix.com slash iFanboy and remember the WWW."
" So you're not seeing now but -- TV most requested book by far by far -- but it. Hopefully this phenomenon for awhile is 665 Gilles Simone in mostly Nichols got -- didn't illustrate them the last one that I read. This book came out of -- united which is an infinite. Crisis. Tie it president of a crisis whose beliefs and rendered it a little ways back there had been a sixty miniseries is secret sixes which -- very. It's. And then there was a mini series of six issues tickets are falling to buy. You'll Simone and illegals. Who's who of the floor yeah before -- I and I read through some of that stuff I read through them united. You did year old mark yeah I did I definitely judges he really laid the groundwork I want -- you and I thought well what I just gone and every these but you know that's not going to give it enough of a chance. Bum because I'll be honest. I did not expect to like trees my my gut feeling I have I have a gut feeling about about books stuff try to natural sixth sense -- that."
" Let me not flat about two -- well you know. Good -- even read a lot of books you just know what you like real vision of the deal is. There's a team of villains when you read you read the team goes that it -- okay somebody that is going to be talking about secret six the current volumes point three. A red one through eight OK your victories okay so the good chunk jump. Seven of those aerials your bibles and what it -- nine or third of the this isn't continental us there there are here yeah so yeah you've read some most of issues. Yes."
" And that the first -- is the seven issues and then it's 81 is like a one shot so it's a team. Of of villains. Basically went back Largo -- was trying to arrange all of the films and in the united the six were the ones who are not going to be part of it. Bomb and they and then all of this you're going after them in and then they meant that stick together the team is currently or at least in these is. Scandal savidge who is the daughter -- vandal savage. Wow yeah Los honestly -- Cat man. Who's a ground cat based -- and looking do yes garage. Dead shot. A Batman villain got Millen who that's who is mainly right yeah. -- there is a DC yeah editing it was bags as reference on it rag doll who is the son of -- of an Iraq -- runner -- just from starts right now it's either right. He's not back here again because the Redmond start and is read the reunion the evil he's like the purple man of that that thing. -- is in this group. You wait. And that's the other girls later. -- And then this is the -- torrential but I infringes on the team I stopped counting the middle of Reading it you know what that. Anyway you know earlier those other -- it was apparent demon -- that aired an earlier music -- human. But if you think might have been. The."
" And and and since we're sort of something so -- days before they have to throw it right so why it stayed together. Their -- like they do missions for a mysterious benefactor they live they live in the house of mystery. Which is not really out of mr. No way out the secrets and enough secret get would have in the house of secret from the very I don't believe so. I know people believe it's related to that. And they they good -- Elected -- I guess like I think what they're all bad guys are telling get shot. I've got this. -- You know he is in this book who did shot -- go for the kids basically you have to decide you like -- characters not if you do that you gotta get with it if you don't it's not going to happen. But did shot to me was. Excuse me. He likes being. And the earlier version that we sort of a more manager. But charming and he's a mustache and nice prison handy reference thank you -- been."
" That's it but I literally felt like that's -- they were writing him this that's what it like became I don't know that's actually the case at all. I did say did -- does not look like I thought he'd acknowledge does not because they spend a lot they also a lot of time without masks on that's what is actually kind of a good thing because you get to know them as people and it's it's sort of less silly. Scandal savage is a lesbian yeah. And -- her lover was killed and so she's depressed through this whole bit until she meets a stripper who looks exactly like. Knock out -- with her ex girlfriend dead in the -- the last far they'll go on a date. Cat man. Is I think sort of the main. Is driven there and they they they focus on and the idea is that he used to be a gigantic joke you zero. And use used to well no this is the point is and then and then he he flipped out he went to Africa and he lived among the lions and now he's (%expletive) hardcore. Com. And he's supposed to be serious and and like he is a fight with -- and a one point and they like sort of fight to even and whatever exactly."
" accident and I had a."
" I had a hard time because. I realized he was a joke and now he's the series but he still looks really stupid it's a really stupid Costin is three scratches. On his artist and and what they know that. But still supposed to take it seriously I had a hard time that the first -- seven issues facing -- their job is to is that. Evil super villain whose name I don't really remember. Well I mean if there's -- reveal I know who is but I government and aim and he's apparently. The -- criminal overlord of all of -- from west coast that everybody pays tribute to. And is very scary and has these two guys who help them and they both wear plaid and it's really bad -- overlay there's no actual folding to the fabric. And and the secret -- is mission is to capture this -- tarantula. Because she has a card. That is -- this is kind of the spoiler. Amex it's a black card to get out of -- cards all of the villains want to get the card. And it makes it a fight amongst each other because they'll they will -- we were all bad guys and all the time voters between the story itself. From a plotting standpoint NN today is -- is go against each other standpoint was was pretty good it was well plot to bomb the art. The calls -- very talented and she's got style it's sort of an ideal day articles and -- a little a little -- down from that. -- I think. The most it does get it drive you the most addition -- to me this is being. Spain was the best character in this just because he's a post. Venom pain he's often that -- he won't do it it is an addiction I don't -- enough and he's got he's got a strict moral code. And he follows that he's got to take care of scandal like that's his thing with I don't know what is it he's big big strong new president of well that that thing in the whole time he keeps saying now it won't take them. What do you think that means exactly and -- he might. And attention and you know. Like Kevin has been with -- huntress so he's not sure -- to be good or bad -- there's a couple of is that a lot of interest -- scenes and things like that. So that's -- sounding good so are you unlike -- I mean you are going to keep reading it. It is okay. One -- big. I didn't hate it so it has to be clear it's not a bad comic book -- an article it's a fine comic book it's not for me. So this is I'm not saying people elect the book you should like because of -- that's not it. However. When you have a team full of bad guys it's really hard to -- consistently so that you feel like they're bad guys and care about --"
" Always the problem books about bad guys is that eventually they have to watered down -- good guys because you can't follow people are consistently. The word evil and then sympathize with them you can do little one shot can do it and OJ and you can do it and complete story but for some and -- and accidents."
" We can but analysts of my husband dead -- like I wasn't really rooting for. Let all the things perhaps until I did not only is like military gets you know but it's. Come on you know it it's almost a romantic comedy will they or won't they -- But it's about will they go back to being bad guys or will they be good guys and you can string them along so long before you kind of don't buy it right and likely pac man Kevin -- Acting like he's gonna go be a superhero but then not he's haunted by something like literally like you classy back to something -- in the past you see like flashes of dialogue. Because he's he's torturing some poachers. Com and you know it's -- I don't -- is it really is no more ridiculous than anything else pitchers not turn the thing it really was not for me in this. Is that there's -- there's a joke he. One -- thing. Because the whole thing is. Cleverness. Into the right that is not my taste at all where every page somebody's gotta do something. Musicals -- didn't get equal citizens are very similar yeah and I thank goodness because that's the same poll just of Monroe dental problems at all initiative. And an I don't have to swear I don't want that in superhero comics and jumps like things are funny like that sometimes but like. Rag doll every time they say something it's sort of a whimsical. But who do -- here don't fix that gas and and like I did it. I come -- I think it is being here what -- of humor and severe as we go back and stated -- justice and Justice League which is which is great because that humor was there. But it's I think it needs wrote in its humor in villains and humor like it's it's -- I think it was getting better as as it went but this is that a third since this -- BBC. 1828 issues are so. That that have been done and and those youngsters specific -- it's well done it's well crafted well plotted. The voice is not something I particularly like very much. If you like. Joking comments that sort of don't take themselves are seriously than do. But it's every page like and there's a lot of that office it's like several characters do it I really hate that. Like it's just it's not for me at all. Bombed so it looks like a family triumph since I guess I guess seasonal -- had -- to -- any issues we all lose."
" So so if you've got some more books that you think that we should read there that we got totally wrong -- just email contact and I am but I found on just send and fans a way yeah."
" Or if you could cause and you can read that Josh -- that was just 3266. Seven. It was what's up elsewhere -- problem with the shortage."
" If you've he decided that I don't like this animal like foresaw no longer worth it appreciate I can what I come to comment on this show -- us what you think of these books are not the only things that matter that's our opinions that's really important. I'm not telling you your opinions of bad. Just not the same go there talk about this stuff talk about all the other stuff and I asked him what dot com good stuff every single day from lots of different people talks opinions and that's why it's good. And that's all so the mine -- most important it is well you're tall it. The dead pool and the -- it isn't going to help."
" spent much purple -- was bad enough."
" I. A little bit closer seals and -- okay."
" Who wants it to be forever and."
" Enough to grow bill."
" To. So we can figure was gonna say that we."
" Yeah. --"

" Yeah. --"
