Voice Mail

Saturday, January 19th, 2008 – running time 25:59
It's time to empty the voice mail box and hear the comic book questions that the iFanboy iFanbase have been dying to ask. The diligent iFanboy trio tries answers those questions and even bickers a little bit.
Jake from Virginia needs to get his frustration with the most recent issues of Robin off his chest.

Ryan from Houston, Texas is curious about the manga title,Lone Wolf and Cub.

Scott from St. Louis is a comic book store manager and wants to know what we think makes a good store. He also want to know what we think of J.M. DeMatteis and David Lapham?

Eddie from Soledad, CA jogs our memories of the Marvel trading cards from the 1990s.

Raph from Kentucky calls in asking if we have any bad comics in our collections and if so, why did we buy them?

Chanra calls in asking for books that are like Age of Bronze, by Eric Shanower

Brian from Seattle asks about comics that read better monthly than collected in trade paperback.

And religiously. In areas like this is how horrible people can be then and now but a lot of it was integrity clean art style. But was routed Atlanta Bernadette was a little it was a murder mystery and it wasn't so down and -- that I -- it was Monica and --"

" Forties written mysteries this it isn't feels that he kind of made his mark with stray bullets in this kind of move on he's been teasing -- scifi book. This is to be out already by now -- the growth picked collection of hard currency should be able to write out your -- yeah. Now so but on arts and it Gimenez dumb I'm familiar with his -- work. Not as trigger what I've heard about the good things about that is that they're -- this question --"

" Who is this place. You know again. -- It's clearly doesn't sleep I'm sorry if you've given that something good at all I've never heard of the things he mentioned the independence and metallic but yeah senate sent well let's -- colts out there right now. We should check in and I -- yesterday I feel like I've -- other things he's written but clue they have not made an impact -- this. I know -- must. Have seen his name to you right. You can."

" I don't know him. I don't know what's. --"

" Thank you need to measure how much are we want to hear more from retailers and -- like that so -- please call or write in but. It's somebody -- what what makes the sore aside from the discount and didn't. You're -- there wasn't a discount. Yeah this is new to come in the past like ten years so I think the Internet really brought about an idea discounting its own people press represent. Press."

" That's not necessarily true where. The discounts. Most soft -- come across are not the -- off your order today it's -- you racked up some amount of money gets it going vessels -- of -- due to high school my I know some places where what those are shot that. Ball across the board and just get 10% -- target -- Yes that's that's something that ever counted -- sort. But I -- not -- I don't but I fussing the us don't think I would I think we're gonna -- point now where you get kind of -- if there's also the discount program. But I just is that the thing that makes or breaks into comics for me I'd. The again I don't need them what you did -- about Cobb money that we doing -- 20%. Is no small thing -- nobody yet -- to -- has -- has is. Well that Iraq instructed that if there Leicester city even attempt stories are these stories and discovered that horrible selection. Sort because everything. -- just -- would be an anomaly or not it doesn't matter because I don't of the books on what exactly is that what -- the store run used to -- It is not -- on these TV don't stop. But therefore I would never shopping around -- well they they do is is that that's a smaller suburban Pennsylvania chanting his name list is a problem results whenever it can't they get all the and marvel DC they get right on the books would be in the game the famous. Vertigo. Nine and they'll let Sibley a series that was an image it won't they won't get issue right that's really subtle -- that -- sort of orders everything but."

" Like historic act I think -- it's worth its salt is going to look at the stuff that's coming up. Business and say this sounds really good thing about it and put this on my customers yet not a bad way -- to say you know like -- the sharpest organized -- me. And so cannot even know whether I'd like I love that and really help you see that's that didn't play because this election the personality of the people running the store and the organizations or is it easy to findings and is is a nice place to go to him you know I mean like I want to go when I don't comics or outlook to go there and spend time there. And and involved talking people who work there are looking for new things that the that you -- so that's that's not what kept us honest it's very basic tenets of retailing. -- I think we're all going to agree upon them. Any shop that has its new releases. Prominently displays you know where to find new book -- that week is a good shot yeah I mean because if you just mix the new releases and all the old books. That's hard yeah. And so -- mashups that into have a ways you can see where this week's folks are and very easily sort of last week's books work and then this stuff gets put into the general circulation right arm I think you pretty much have to trade organization."

" Well I realize let me pick and in -- there's arguments and some people organize their trades completely out about quarter some people organized by publisher but for I like my publisher better because I think I know that. This was Burgos a look at DC we're gone and this is and we'll look and image now. Yeah but it -- it should have some sort of -- easily find what you're looking for you know and again vehicle convoy slung under and I shop at stores that. I want to get in and out very quickly because there was either not nice employees or -- we -- her weird."

" Way -- to. You know what's in them and then what sucks this you know like we NASA's faster but well. Like when news from the storm door. I don't look at you know money's an atomic particularly is talking you might books and things like that books she might single them and they thought to be put yeah. Yeah all of my money into the sort of I don't care of brutality and wants to put. Yeah friends and the thank you talked us really see -- the under excellent."

" This is it is true. Although California. Another question."

" I don't remember back like and I -- Always come out with some treating cars they're calling people aren't that known about the brutal -- And the marble my password and mark both of -- the world Blair. Where was like four books were passing the lord scorecards in the -- Binders form. I'll let you know about it and intelligence wondering if you guys remember those he has collected those. And so talk the good work on the part of."

" Who I remember those I counted on the basis BC's second. I it's funny is I got I in god and very early in the early in like 1991 marble started -- it and is part of the whole speculator and early ninety's boom there was the trading -- boom as well try to. Yeah yeah they were expensive memory image anywhere but I remember I got the first series of the moral ones with them with -- border with the name in the Indian and willful little. Yeah and then on the back there was. It's and then on the back there was the stats about the character yeah. And that was a secret from me to learn about the character and it's only that -- tomorrow million residents on the characters. Then the second series and a lot of and I got those it was and as. As Madonna's like there's are carved this character is this and it's our series came out and then they sort of going -- those the charismatic Texan and that's when I got out I."

" Those the first World Series of the second World Series in the first season is it necessary. Over the public DC social sort of rights problems -- with -- of over the first you don't think Alex. That -- the -- there's here's what didn't -- Batman and it could reference that amendment -- regard. It was weird but still I remember. Those little model model cars."

" I I just we heard through rates -- they came right now I've in the marvel once first came out from the holiday is this like I'd been to the -- on your Christmas shopping. That is running on on -- I just remember you're running to whatever store wasn't what it was like someone like Wal-Mart kind of thing and just like buying as many -- Certainly giving her focus is on fox net tables and boxes. That's hard to remember than we do -- I want because -- Osama gadgets and minor --"

" Say that the route and -- and oh doing a big cult book reorganization of the day. And I camp awesome really -- stuff like. Back leg action -- trucking company and I spoke must still wanna -- And wondered if you go there you know Palmer in your collection. Thanks big and the show you could have guessed."

" Backlash was good to us a lot. Also like for a Booth selling the law on grounds and don't know what I'm talking about. Including -- and that counts and absolutely I -- course all the time to his -- got the most vivid books from that period of most of them are over time when a lot of bad books last week. Guy he you know it's funny -- came in I was just. I'd read a lot of -- I think it was like reading wizards names all these books mostly in the books from the time I watch these. If they're -- and are buying like top Kalb looks like -- nine red -- and expansion out of liked what they say this is anxious about her song this is stupid yeah. And -- Michael Turner trap them. Yeah like just folks I don't I didn't really want to rebuild their loved beloved so I didn't like it never and it has likened to me like yeah this is like a book about pretty girl makes the point -- Everything else was an editor and there was a lot of like it."

" Is that what you do is you mean this is that you go through ups and downs and knowledge of the image books and also looking for the -- and looks. You you follow me that where you followed where you buy anything with that character with that likely go on it. So like have all the walls -- books but only if should -- books of old books and Carolina and there was a lot of not good stuff from the yeah. You have a lot of books from Scott Abdel. We have he was on the main books in Houston did you -- books that you. Weren't good."

" Most of the things that came out after the first seven vintage books before. The last couple years all it could hit -- into the cover. Did you that's really bad."

" That I think is the thing is is that it's tough because you don't know when you buy an -- he has promises that characters like -- have a greater -- like whatever and it even happens now I guess that might mean. From -- to buy another."

" Just. I think that's a time when leader. Team young windsors and let's put it now now you know this isn't not -- again -- that book it's an anomaly."

" Yeah alone. Myself you know blindly doing nothing is live in different than podcasting and it but."

" It's dead. I'm excellent for."

" genre I've got in the -- with the podcast I'd I'd I'd really. -- I don't know if you mention -- audio on the Irish are -- but armed. It brought. What -- think that it. Com I would I would really got into it again I got my local library before and I got their book I can't wait for it you know three years for that the and except -- store -- to come out. Com do you have any suggestions for stories like that basically you know graphic novels with a bit that we are. Inspired or written from. History lake. One who was there aren't journey -- country or northwest passage. Or armed. Or something like that if -- That would get what you think -- that I think a lot to show game."

" Odd hybrid region bronze yeah bronze by -- action on our and drawn -- but we're seen you know connections eyes and we're not right image comics that were early repayment in the crap. Application imagining an image image since it became an image central in this sort of working on a different diversity but is also -- types of things. Fight -- almost made our history shows I can't say exactly why didn't. May not be pretty much touched on all the books that we know like -- his future about com. Trying to think there's anything else like that. And I go little left field here go on a -- cannot gotten technical -- for mama. And it is time travel story but the track pack two 312. Eighty something like so that's going to be -- bays of historical fiction. I don't know the silly -- Let's pitches. I mean has -- Leo Seth we know about that point we kind of get a whole show one of these runs. He's wrong about -- increase. Men and a lot of left town Troy. Who's who's straight historical book and let me but still -- makes -- We -- and the gods and and the whole thing you know as we heard great things as low levels of the -- it's very. Berlin by Jason -- and by that come from nice to wear -- you'll have to look at pleasantly fun. And our last one."

" Eight days this is Brian now in Seattle Washington and things hope he -- nice holidays. And also I always hear people talk about. You know books. But come out that are made the trade are best read. As a collection other anything you guys -- hopefully. You think their best to read Moakley Albania collection lose Google spice don't have as much. With the competitors. It's hidden what you guys think. Have good holidays. Condit -- best."

" Com and my question you told them not wrong. Billy boat and bingo that's been recent that. I really should I felt like had written months it was just too. -- And I don't think there's any other book that's terrific month particularly this --"

" It is seen AC that's the thing is it because it's it's not so much what. It would the west is what books have to be read monthly verses in trade whatever. Let's -- books and what want to read all the evidence question what have been -- I'm interpreting and say you know like -- like the you know like you know the top here books would you. Would you stop reading detective comics monthly -- reading and an attorney -- You know yeah I would I would always -- can I want to read an excellent multi night portrait second. It -- recorded -- Yeah I didn't realize you. I don't their fears that -- You know -- this initial excitement like reading conflict surrounding powers monthly yes yeah and I am sure it's great traits a love reading a -- and you what's really funny listening to is that it's I think some of the walking dead people who read -- issues. Swear by reading an issue is where people read the trades have irony and trading elegantly so it's kind of funny how it works on both levels."

" Being regular superhero books have. You know like the last -- green lantern semester war yeah I think that will be back together we'll have read better interest is that -- yeah."

" No I agree -- disagree and I think that that's based out as a the issue is the delays killed my momentum in the middle of I would have my brother rented one Boca me about some. Just."

" in their their stuff like dust like exterminators vertigo when when Serena in trade and then I felt as if it actually mommy traces the salaries and issues and and then safari has been paid decently written in Canada in June issue format is each one kind of as a recap I I was just waiting tables and trades really really enjoyed it like that now -- every three. So just. Also bombed that alarm it's also the son thank everybody called in. If you want to colony DNA get possibly on the show he -- 188 Campbell is that one in 83 to 6697. But it would still life and."

" You could write you know. There that's contact -- and -- I honestly don't know by feet and then you using email client is outlook or Eudora perhaps thunderbird. -- That that it'd to an open source of youth. One. Or any of the web clients and fifteen minutes of Yahoo! account but but -- pop -- it's -- I suspect the you know what protection is aware that."

" And that way. That you -- accidentally dot com -- about this when he's browsers just. Hard they'll let me know if you're on. Arkansas and revisions -- comes out September for the show and it's URL for a good. But welcome once. You know real. Universal record -- and that's right problem if you are if you -- Brian what pieces. If you like on I can't buy dot com because -- over a percent. Faces federal benefit everything let's get oh. The prices are insane. At major world --"

" them. -- Tell us take. We have to manufacture."

" This -- and was fourteen but GoDaddy have a good idea companies have a good night and with 10% -- all purchases. " Thank you need to measure how much are we want to hear more from retailers and -- like that so -- please call or write in but. It's somebody -- what what makes the sore aside from the discount and didn't. You're -- there wasn't a discount. " That's not necessarily true where. The discounts. Most soft -- come across are not the -- off your order today it's -- you racked up some amount of money gets it going vessels -- of -- due to high school my I know some places where what those are shot that. " Well I realize let me pick and in -- there's arguments and some people organize their trades completely out about quarter some people organized by publisher but for I like my publisher better because I think I know that. Episode #53 - "Voice Mail"

Running Time: 00:25:59

It's time to empty the voice mail box and hear the comic book questions that the iFanboy iFanbase have been dying to ask. The diligent iFanboy trio tries answers those questions and even bickers a little bit.

I would have to say one of the most amusing parts of this show was the miming during the listening of the voicemails. Like Josh mouthing the correct pronunciation of Manga.

On trades vs monthlies. I honestly like buying issues for a few reasons; impatience and wanting to be part of current discussion being the main ones. There's some books where I'd just be remiss to lose the amazing covers as well (ie - Fables).

PS - Cute socks Conor.

lone wolf and cub is fantastic.
there are 7 films based on the series and THEY are fantastic. if you dig the zatoichi series and good samurai type action... you'll dig it. get it on ebay cheap or they started releasing the official sets here in the us. don't know how expensive they are but i'm sure you can get them at ifanboy.com/store
there's also been two different tv series' based on the manga, which i've never seen but i imagine they're pretty good too... i don't know for a fact, but i can just IMAGINE that they're good.

The Revision3 link to the newest episode doesnt work for me (Gives me a "Were you loking for one these shows?" page thing that just list all the Rev3 shows...) and I don't see the new ep on the iFanboy main Rev3 page. Can someone post the large quicktime link by any chance?

Finally watched this episode.

Gotta say, the moment the caller asked for historical comics, I was screaming for you guys to mention Jason Lutes' Berlin.

An lo and behold, Josh pulls it out at the last second.

Nice.

Not quite as "epic" as Berlin or Age of Bronze, but I would also mention James Sturm's work, like The Golem's Mighty Swing or a new one he has about Satchel Paige. And then there's a Houdini comic that I believe Lutes and Nick Bertozzi did recently.

A little late for this week's episode response, please to forgive me.

I have dilemma. How to decide which store to buy books? I like one store where the people are really great and are always happy to special order stuff for me, but they don't order anything but mainstream books on normal weeks. Other store has large selection, but act like total douchebags. hard to go there.

I SO got those old 90's trading cards. I still have sheets of them for the set where you had 9-card pages and they all fit together to make a big picture. Spidey-page, Cosmic-page, Thor-page, X-men page, Avengers-page, and more!

What happened to the quality of Image books in the 90's? You guys mentioned Youngblood. That started off really strong and then fizzled out. So did Prophet. I absolutely LOVED them both when they were good. I just couldn't get enough of Stephen Platt's stuff. Why is he not penciling anything?

Thanks for being super!

Go to the first sotre. If there's something you forgot to order, or they just don't have, stop in on the second store for it.
