This week iFanboy calls attention to the great American genre of western comics, in all their horse smelling glory. We've got lawmen and outlaws, gamblers and rustlers, and maybe even a no good, low-down, dirty robot army.
The last few years have seen a tremendous uptick in western comics, which used to be commonplace, but became very rare a few years back.
First up are a couple of tales from Marvel Comics. Blaze of Glory and Apache Skies which both explore the history of Marvel's western characters. There's even a western version of Ghost Rider!
Then it's over to DC to learn a little about their premier western anti-hero, Jonah Hex. First there are the old classic comics in the Showcase Presents: Jonah Hex, and of course, the newer, modern stories in Jonah Hex: Guns of Vengeance.
A new book that has no business being any good, but is anyway, is the new Lone Ranger series from Dynamite Entertainment.
He's known for the gritty, modern crime of 100 Bullets, but Brian Azzarello also gets dirty in the post civil war south, with his series, Loveless.
Completely out of left field is a cowboy tale from creative genius Doug TenNapel, who bring us the old west, but with Sasquatch and Robots in Iron West, which is certainly unlike any other western tale out there.
But the award for the most out-there western comic book actually should go to Eric Powell for his take on Billy the Kid versus Dr. Frankenstein, in Billy the Kid's Old Timey Oddities.
Wrapping up the show is a little piece of comic book masterpiece, with the fourth volume of Preacher, Ancient History, just in case you were wondering where the Saint of Killers came from..

" I gotta say I did not expect like these news actually did and like last night out trying to finish artery for has totally tired and you don't have to read something. " Great game green. Quintessential western DC character. He insisted in his visit for a long time for awhile -- in the western what do what do dine out they brought into the future. He was -- western sector propelled the future but now there's been a resurgence of popularity devoted to an X series. This is a joint tax -- showcase book volume one which is Josh and -- gotten around Christmas and what would surprise who we figured. Okay it's going to be yields pails and a sort of."
" Well it's pretty fortunate to showcase a lot of books from DC is a salute to the marvel central line where it's black and white reprints. Books. From the past -- more often 60s70s and it is that the Senate and he said is that right. And what are the last the last kind of cheap easy win reprints of the mature than. And might not be totally man that for people who are fans characters is like all."
" Yeah it's an end pose a surprising part of it through it's pretty grisly case -- stuff I expected to have the edges -- awful I was actually surprised country what he's edited more team to jettison it is in yeah but there's felons and and customs. That's but he loves a lot of work them he covers -- covers art is -- done by. Who need -- yet."
" Where he's -- co creator of the -- to get us. And is also who will now be the reason why I think there's a lot of populated western that is because of the book called to exceed the modern book which should."
" You're coming out in just -- I think you need him a lot of credit for resurrecting and sustained. And recently in the past year children and you -- actually. The next one was -- first."
" Yeah this is that he's got two Beers. That. The great thing about this is it's good mostly one shot stories so you can not happen. Well you can just pick it up and read it and it fight it classes it's -- also have to brought up artists doing his books because. People seem to relieve the perpetrators they're really love. Just an accident -- to -- what doctor strange terms and -- a -- a lot of attention in and there's even are quite co creator did some there Darden and an essential but."
" And it's I mean I never read. John -- before before this for a settlement to show that some -- little background character designs these -- character. Georgia Texas and acts confederate soldier producers of the post war period. You read this terrorism thing is when you read the book like a lot of it is who's this guy what's he about and I want you know what did you. Pick up the issues and you don't know what's that's how it's supposed to be it's like the position of the mysterious stranger breezes into town which is you know of the western standard. But as you go through there is I mean like what you need to know about him is that he's. The most bad ass -- at her yeah if you go into gunfight with and you'll lose that his face is messed up. For some reason which is revealed in the book yet not -- that he was the US Mexico for ourselves and where is the computer or use our viewers and a sort of a screw you to everybody and yet the book takes place half. After the civil war it's like an 80s70s and eighties and so. At that point you walk into a town have a confederate uniform and it's like. You know like home or not. And that's basically all season he's -- to -- these guys that he basically all you need to know. Other stuff Israel is immune to the books but you know and that each story is tale of good versus evil basically. Our -- are conscious it's not so good versus evil just. You know I don't that you receive votes just people -- people yeah there's there's a lot of gray a greeting this and you read these view yet what did you --"
" And we're gonna gonna generally I'm I'm not a big western fan. But I I I like to one and done aspect of -- like this English you can -- what does it consists consistory. But also you know kind of in a modern way of doing the one -- that I got the feeling of me of the story they'll -- does the."
" Across the books -- not a coaster flop but it's more of historic -- little -- people who turned back a little more more secure than people these -- couldn't believe some romance you know let me find it wanted to history little by little it's. It's I think it's one of the best books that's -- yes --"
" Books I really like the art I -- of them is a different artists on on most -- really -- and they got they got to know about this little girl got this big a big -- ham dinner. That he was Lou Ross the majority are in the."
" The majority art versus versus six social closeness -- two -- Another really the popular book and it's becoming more popular is there's been there's been -- launched the Lone Ranger look."
" Now when this came out this came out kind of and -- recently and I'm envious of that after Diana who doesn't who's smaller Independent publisher who does a lot of -- West licensed stuff and also kind of you know special sign you know -- that they. So I was didn't take it seriously because that -- worried about it or it wouldn't be if you thought you know -- this property and you know we Jonah -- and other lessons are getting popular is is really going to be cut quality. The fact they had John -- today to do the cover -- the cover art director Brett. I think that meant a lot to it but also I was surprised -- this story was. Really good it was big basically -- the Lone Ranger hip and it said it in. The idea of the Texas Rangers and again that post civil war kind of error and error and --"
" That's but the main. -- I could say that's Ottawa and -- SA. I was first."
" I thought you know. You put Cassidy -- cover here who a lot of people because whatever is inside isn't going to follow that. It's like having like a fantastic and is the opening act you know but I was pleasantly surprised then that the artist Sergio -- Is great into the third grade sort of European style look really nice story -- I thought yeah I thought that's what the sort feels really good at that the art was mostly good. I took a couple points that we've heard here but but overall at all it is -- office. Yeah these panels that the actors these long drawn out panels then when the show's sort of the scene scene from the scene is really cinematic Vietnam where the just the house and hill man knocks on the door this crying walks away and there's nothing you know it's. Just and it these are another example of really well -- 88."
" I will say this amongst all these books we've got this table here. I've read I read this mission's original tax issues. This is a much better trade book and then you don't feel like that but it's it's it's so decompress."
" Yeah I I I read this note if you had to read this five month by month or even I don't know how often comes out they would give them quite."
" Yeah I'm thinking of going switching to the -- because it's it's much more enjoyable one I guess that."
" I'm a little. I'd be a little concerned about how long this can go wrong for like -- really that story. Well yeah I think could look. Look if he's now he's not learned that the -- you can now have a story on March -- to -- the character for what he does you know have -- he's not and other day to day at a time don't realistic kind of not cliche kind of needs talking kind of whaling season passes through the end of illness -- tax. Tori Ellen. The book."
" But also not you know nothing about -- that -- you can solo ways. I like having the classic -- cut suit he would have also over suit like he wears me in the movies most of these got a hold. Blue red suit. It's good for clothes and that's the southern. Sort of controversy all. Modern western has loveless vertigo -- zarrella was controversial well concerts -- anybody's who's listened to the podcast is that. Josh I'm very eagerly bought it when I first came -- we've I lasted about. Six months longer needed I think probably but. We're race."
" At about it when it came -- It by Brian as a -- And our primary so this is. Percent. Really you know from a hundred bullets. On the and -- I think people with the same problem this is and it's absolutely beautifully toned voice down there and I didn't know what was happening. Time I couldn't I couldn't -- plot yeah. Lately and it flashbacks and flash forwards and stuff and I think that's something that you -- comics it's you create flashbacks and contacted me and I'm just initially -- don't have to know what is happening because you don't have the same. I think what happens you write it like a movie script in the room with a few obvious that's happening -- comic isn't always."
" I think is going to but I disagree there because I think they because by beating Germany on these coverage of the shows I read -- in the -- that. And what I thought what I actually really like to publicize it blacks and let loveless as much if not mean more than 100 hacks. And I I. I see where you can say it was kind of confusing because there's a couple points were as confused but then this is -- picked up -- the devices where they forgot that the flashbacks headed differently kind of interior look to it individually like if you if you look at a flashback page -- characters -- he -- real -- yeah I just want to figure out what -- devices or uses some -- somewhat. That certainly doesn't always ready yet -- is that it will separate out in his what we are going I just kind of roll roll with the government I don't know I thought it was like the idea it falls character once again it's post civil war out of these issues if you read this monthly issues. I'm wondering if maybe that you -- that you certain sites for -- easier way -- you -- auditor. A remarkable what's gonna put us when and the story is is possible war it's that guy who fought for the south. And returns back to claim his on his land. And he's taken over by the union army -- at like eight. Claim everything but exactly so it's kind of he gets into bit of the battle with the union. With the union kind of government -- mountainous town over his landed more than that's out as he does that become sheriff of this town and there's a the local aside do you plot is that there's a ongoing kind of thing with his wife. And you not quite sure if it just goes to she's alive she's dead she's hiding or some sort of thing and so I thought it was really compelling -- of the west -- the actually fighting -- the -- the romance aspect of --"
" That's a great looking book it's it's the scenes he he creates a really great scene yeah. Nelson noted it's it's -- very adult. -- of America's vertigo."
" And nobody even says like it's very are actually a lot of -- stuff in here and you know sometimes think the western is being very clean and no no no this is not for kids."
" Excited for the faint of heart. Those those other than the prototypical modern western stories now there are accused of offbeat tales. Such as the western realms that are also."
" When you have video western cowboys and Indians and there's really lot of potential their -- tour -- really serious but also sometimes humorous sometimes you know. Fun to shop on the western is."
" Like it has its certain archetypes and you can use those and then apply them to different places well what -- 1010 apple did was he made but robots and robots to build on what we're about cowboys iron less iron west from image. This is lucky I."
" I really like this on who is on the black and late -- Indiana -- it almost reminded cartoon insults -- you did the -- dragon slayer -- case video -- flammable Donald and I guess it was in the the DJ -- and the big guys so -- that I kind of -- much what I saw these characters moving on the pages on the movie this -- drag their parents got a new you know. But -- seat -- kind of classic lesson we get this kind of road kind of anti hero dad and he's that -- like a whole wacky world."
" The solution unless there's robot authors like he takes the regular things in the western and then like he substitutes like a regular Indian fuller. The -- now."
" So the -- passports sidekick and fight evil robots and it's still all taken place you know squarely in the old Alessio."
" Baton and everything is there robots in the Rolex dress like cowboys and issued guns and they right -- felt like that -- right steamer train something that's it's like. It's this very kind of you know. Merging of months that -- science fiction because they're robots but with a nice or an -- and again and got to Naples like creators creator but he's one of those guys that come out with a book. That's just a graphic novel it all on its own every couple years and who have written on the whole thing insists it'll be. Unlike anything you've ever seen yet I mean in and is very well imagine that there. -- wacky font that also in the same sort of sit sort of thing. What my favorite books recent here Eric Powell -- creator of the whom you Americans currently he's worked on action comics and cement. Giving Kyle -- co hosts Kyle hosts did Billy the kid's old -- beyond these few -- ahead candidate. And putted basically is that imagine taking the -- indicate character from you know historical you know nonfiction. And merging them with the monsters that are so in this case Dracula. And I credits -- and yes."
" A story of Billy the kid didn't diet it's what people think couldn't or didn't die when people's officially said he died and instead he and the purpose. Sort of mercenary group was going to take up doctor Frankenstein night. And so that he'd -- it is different carnival freaks and Billy -- are going to pick up like friends that. It's goofy."
" And I love this guess you'd expect to like it or care and I I so much fun I thought. I thought it is for a season was enough yet I again thank -- was exactly right thank yeah I did have trouble -- community of west could yeah. He is forever really did it's amazing -- and younger and so influential guru flourish yeah. The the art style is on the I didn't love the I didn't love it doesn't the it's it had that kind of mom. This bungee skin kind of look you know -- I don't know what you air power drawn up via yeah partner for this past this mean for me from you today really worked. It's just it's a certain style that works with this I liked it. This kind of -- again. That is something that is good and bad sides of accomplishing those little bit -- But it was it's a it's a who to read -- lot of fun in Sunday that is published by dark horse look if you want."
" Really the kid and a bunch of circus freaks chasing down doctor Frankenstein yeah Europe men. That's -- and basically they like me whenever the -- like mr. Powell pretty much has probably a lot of cloud is like -- versus France let you Seoul. A lot of that. I like is -- the end did you notice is a giant -- ballooned to wrap everything up yeah. Totally winter was certainly better how does that."
" He he he really love would that worked really doesn't do and what this book is they love the meeting -- comics but he also. Has a lot of fun chip and that's and that's as an example of what it."
" This is like you I got the very end of what -- explain everything that this is what the biggest we're who have ever seen the."
" He uses it as somebody else. Well like this wrap this up real quick. Just. Let me if you if you like some fun to western Byron black and blue kids old time the oddity everybody's. Jobs also wanted to mention that there's a classic western Manitoba."
" Well. I've always been an -- the preacher the entire thing is a western. Debate between Jesse Custer is a western character preacher from -- get classic by Garth Ennis and Steve -- we are going to do a show about that later tonight against a very much that you -- wanted to know -- preacher who weren't sure you can go up my book for which is on ancient history. Which is basically a western he what is and it was inspired to do insane -- major Internet Baffert saw him forget. Com and then once you know that you'll see it this is basically the story Sam killers hey it's it's a great story there's another back up and hear about monitors for this one specifically. It's just like a man who are so cold he killed ten and night that's literally in this. You don't need to read all Richard read this story and I think if you like the tone and you could say these go for estimate just."
" I think you can I mean you can seek to editors this is a shutter -- well these days you don't. -- people complain superheroes are dominant market is nothing else out there there's a lot of western books you can really find there's more out there to enjoy. Joining Texas a line up monitors a lot of what was slowing bottom -- basis in my Elvis books every month."
" It's really kind of refreshes the genre that was once not passed off -- dead is actually a lot while actually putting some out really quality so."
" It's and is and is and is stories as upcoming series that are coming I think there's going to be a -- that face serious about it there -- and someone's. Does what Brian -- not just in -- this is Asia have a thing is like. Support these series because for a long time this -- be great if -- went -- and then they go away so if you like these and you should you know I've."
" And these are these can be really good is because I think it's a breath of fresh air for the creators yeah. I mean I think they like doing the superhero books but I think all you know it's fun to write something that's not -- Pacino Dustin. It's craft -- here he was flown there this. Yeah that's have you like these books the only other books and we should do you think we should check that north contact back tabloid dot com."
" Or you -- what's the 11 ADD can blaze that's when he DDG 6697. I can talk about this episode rather episodes of WBI and -- dot com or you go to the forums is the link get revision three dot com slash I fan -- definitely and numb draw."
