Wolverine

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 – running time 26:34
The short, hairy, surly mutant with claws and a weird haircut is the one of the most popular and enduring characters Marvel has. With the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, iFanboy takes a look at the history of Logan, and what makes him such a favorite.

When Wolverine first showed up in the pages of Hulk #180 way back in 1974, no one could have known that Len Wein and Herb Trimpe had introduced the most enduring comic book character since Spider-Man. When he joined the X-Men, and Chris Claremont and Frank Miller proclaimed him "the best he is at what he does," he took off in popularity, and hasn't let up since. A favorite guest star as well as a series regular in more than a handful of monthly comics, people can't seem to get enough of Wolverine. Josh, Ron, and Conor take a good look at some of the better stories involving the mean runt from Canada like his first mini-series, and Weapon X.

Hugh Jackman's performance in the X-Men films was a standout, and he brought Wolverine to life in a way that fans fell in love with. On May 1, we'll see the premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine in theaters, as the movies attempt to delve into Wolverine's secret and hidden past. This episode will let you know everything you need to know about everyone's favorite mutant.

" I'm the best there isn't what I do. What is that exactly. Yeah if -- This episode of -- is brought to you by godaddy.com. And netflix.com. -- would become a discussion show my name is hard to patch -- here with -- planning and."

" And I'm Ron Richards and then the next big superhero movie of the summer of the of the year out this week yet it is Wolverine. Four X-Men origins Wolverine nasty slips and branding. So we figured what I don't get -- from the help and now daytime talk about probably one of the most popular characters all comics and regions of modern age modern comics all -- Now for those you who read the X banner read -- read you know that there is the -- is an -- is seven -- and there's a lot. A lot of who like to know the sector so that limited that title probably not except to say get some stories I was actually trust me I know at all huh huh. What a character shows up every third issue is -- slid out for the past thirty years if you gotta -- and you repetitive so Daryn that's a good tax cuts on on the major points he's the best there is showing up and that's exactly. So I'll those who have been living in caves and Wolverine is. Is the carrier is a member of the accident. -- And -- first introduced in the pages of the incredible Hulk actually. In the early seventies is incredible Hulk number bomb when he -- eighty was using a teaser panels in the book and then what 81 is on the cover yet. And this sort of resolves and money to the whole goes up to Canada to fight the Wendy go. And this Canadian super agent attacks in minutes wolverines he's the war in the wolverines put. I don't cause little whiskers and little kids not I think Peter Chris whiskers really good at. And -- lean on her trip where the -- the character and -- really really rich now aren't you know Lou and it's a much. But he was intended to be he's tend to be like -- Captain America for Canada. I was NB a as a vindictive thoughts Georgia did. That represents Canada and what's the symbol we drink beer global marine. So they made a little short -- flaws and I. And ten. -- And really international Japanese guy with some fire Irish guy with the with Benji and the Canadian contingent was -- and other -- I -- thunderbird he got -- validity America and Americans with no other Americans. So every photo -- Sawyer yeah and it all passes -- exactly. So I love America so basically that's only good news the national team and and let me says you know I traded it will bring her back public sees him. And so if you go back and read the giants so that's meant. He still -- figure out the character in he was still Canadian he still short. De Dave Cochran. Improved it does the characters are much better more what we think about Wolverine with the with the queen with a clean your mess and hopefully boots in the clauses that where -- yellow blue cost him. And he was of Muslim drops his cool little music bomb. How are -- he said by about a million messages about the Canadians Nelson about the thickness of hate for anything advertisement so -- I. So you -- to the X-Men and actually was really interesting reading X at a time you go back and Reed Johnson is that send up until that X and -- the 130s. That's. You know the ninety's nearly -- it really get the character he really didn't actually resonating wasn't that -- Aventis and it works technically yeah like a huge popular do for quite a long gone -- like a lot of people didn't like -- because he wasn't -- didn't really -- was always comes with the -- the outsiders but that. But it wasn't until when closer Chris Claremont numbers -- and that they lose our until bubbly character and he really -- Then after that you can do. The dirty Vegas one let me on the dark -- I'm as the legendary classic best access Lawrence -- told. One and kind of -- that aspects of that story is that. Issue number one violation of 133 months and extend was really the turning point for -- in his character comes popularity in terms characterization. That was the one when they're attacking the hellfire club and it's -- alone. And you got a lot of -- who he's going through this is the -- is it is sneaking into the hellfire club and that's lumber classic scene where he's. The hellfire -- million guys there a -- you that that's short -- taken out and then this whole like dirty Harry -- hockey scene and it's from that moment a mineral realism -- is bad. Yeah and movies yeah. Poverty is increasing gravity of all time you know he's walking towards -- not stopping now right. Was it -- Is it okay but as -- if you look at it look at the character itself on -- you know what what -- I think that he's a mutant. With with animal like senses these hits and -- smell and hearing archives on mishmash of angry he is and he's also -- is one of the rare means that have multiple -- yeah if you look at the X and expending enormous and one like you know teleport or whatever but he has. He is the enhanced your senses as well as the population healing factor and -- the only power. Hours -- now other things the clause 12 o'clock slowly revealed to be ball and partisan rotation but that is his skeleton. -- later and yes we've -- to talk to Bolivia were added. In the process of making. An ongoing project they lace on the -- that's -- that I met him. Which is the unbreakable metal in the marvel universe that's not a encouraged visibility he'll -- to do exactly analyze analyze and to not have an adult children. Which is just yet but so what you've got is he got this little packages will fight for three Canadian guy who's got a bad attitude and is pretty much unstoppable. And -- can't break his bones you can't tell him you know no."

" Funny is this is and then in the course of -- stuff for the show I realized -- if she is marble Superman. Yes like if he doesn't you don't think he totally is due to the -- and can never die every defeated no matter what you do to him. C have to figure really six stores I also because more like miles. But he's not the because data to be shot and killed nothing nothing can stop it can be killed two can be educated blowing up --"

" And also make the argument that he also carries the same moral fortitude that -- tell a different -- that he has a moral code that he lives by NN's and an ease in and it also in. But it's a more realistic tough."

" It's about sort of figure what all the stores were -- and what looks like a single piece of meat -- you know like she can't dot. So let's keep in that sense he's Superman and -- it's hard to write stories for him where. He's really in jeopardy because you know and these are a million soldiers out of he's going to -- I would kill at all."

" That the other side of that is that you find his emotional torture and that's really where that got him. And put that part of what I'm absolutely -- that make the character really what made him so engaging was that kind of mystery around. What I thought was really interesting when I was growing up reading them was that when -- the mental anguish is that -- there's a sense of that he doesn't have this complete memories he doesn't know where you can never -- out how he had just the Skelton. He was really kind of -- with four all he -- yet that that's -- lot of things that you get the sense as there are telling stories that. Because of his healing power he's actually a lot older than he seems he looks may be in his forty's may be thirty the president is here but as they told stories he realized that he fought in the Spanish revolution with Franco generally out and vote Democrat with Hemingway and he was -- World War II like there there's a there's a sort of working its Captain America America knows him. And as a second American know what this little. And then the North Carolina looks result revisionist history that a lot of -- prehistory. That you can choose to take not take round get a cup series dream because a lot of it connects it sounds right then and has every right there has worked on and then added something else and it if you look at the different elements -- you know you courses in new Minneapolis -- He was a Canadian agent and you've got this kind of government agent -- an angle to it. They introduced over the years and Japanese semiannual so it's -- a lot of Asian influence and what he does. There you know there it is just be. The bad ass killing machine I mean this is kind of bomb his moniker is on the best of what I would do when that is -- There are. Yeah and then there's the guess --"

" Bald sonic when I was a kid. Yeah and what we're here to the Obama. In the season so. I love suddenly I -- thank you have nearly ten years old and -- regional -- of the stick when we're going to come sore after -- who bombardments. And and -- I was ten I was reading -- books but not really reversed and character and history and not really knowing Wolverine I thought. He was maybe Japanese. I thought maybe he was rushed for some reason in the stupid cartoon hit an Australian accent like. -- Look he's a summarized the technicals and a poster of -- and that right arm to the world now is a very the very he's."

" Candidates that was very broad and was blanket is now every artist has added a little too and every writers and it's and it. And it part of the fun of ten part of the fun has been. Is -- reading the stories -- what you're liking what you don't like but what's also kind of deteriorated character of the years is that too much information much information as as we've given us the answer is that they."

" On that he was special because you didn't know anything. Netflix make guys -- within minutes they gave up snake -- his face his name is history he did give us special -- wolverines. As soon as they gave you his history his real name it where it came from suddenly its like. You know."

" That the worst. Depiction is the Canadian government have the I think. That method over the last two points on -- for a second what's the source is that there's also on an angle in addition to the killing in the memory and also is the Los Angeles that he is a tragic figure -- that he just cannot. Find that person every time every kind of -- love the woman she dies it seems like it not and yeah. With the exception Julia genealogy com record and then -- then also on whether or not is this make sense that. Is that he's always had a strong bond with the kind of sidekick. -- Define that and then did you believe in the ninety's and he's always had this kind of affinity for his team -- astonishingly it. Her ass so and it kind of back to the moral content where he's. While -- there and the outside very gruff and and and until police protector protector inside he's very warm very loving very loyal to enhance the register of."

" It looks like it. Anyway yes I just always talk about we'll talk about yeah break thanks to Netflix for sponsoring this episode of iFanboy. " So after. -- Okay it's been 133 and wolverines let's start popularity this indeed the marvel way seems to be to do a soul series a little miniseries the respect of the spotlight exactly so what we got was we of the Wolverine subtitled miniseries those four issue mini series and from 1982. With Chris Claremont and well known -- unknown unknown -- And news."

" Not the primary is still that's -- sure."

" And this was this was the the first real kind of and solidifying of the Wolverine Japanese influence and over in sound right this wrong."

" They the confuse me because the kid does like to do you know if it's in December as a samurai -- you know warriors jet engine plant -- it and this is that this is one of the early history to correct that are bought and this is that this is an important. -- that's a great story it's a great will restore it really. There really -- a candidate mean. Claremont cost to make chemical -- is still the Wolverine in my head up to one from this book one from dark Phoenix was my whole ex senator that's -- remand the way it looks very draws them. He looks sort of similar to have and is this is is this for the best that I would do came from this is -- the book."

" In my guess how -- is if there isn't what I do what I do best is very nice yeah."

" And then that is over eight minutes is what he does it does whatever it is yet to do and it's not and does the stuff that's not --"

" this -- showed the evolution of the -- cost you six conscience was in Chicago -- the brown color seeing same design as the yellow blue and brown Brown's arm down a bit little more -- on this yet. Let's mask in this mini series yeah Iran's. More ridiculous hair net. There this'll this'll this'll sorry -- introduces like this and the Japanese have influence and and his ongoing battle with Hogan. And the anything else is love interest with some Mary Joe who is I had -- Food and obviously during this whole Japanese crews -- kind of grouping and really that this is one floor issues open the door to. Stories after stories after stories that involve Japan and involves samurai -- involved. And then volume. Crime -- to be the Japanese ninja group."

" You know basically. He's sort of -- mean I think what they did was in his salute the fact that he's he's Ronan yeah. He's a master -- warrior. And he has a code is -- moral code under strict. And he takes it right that's it that's what this is it's it's and they -- they figure that out -- works -- it. And is also Arlen were able to we're gonna judgment if you had too many players right. The risk really so bad. Actually that came out -- won't read it explodes a popular."

" RT primarily seen in the pages of uncanny X-Men. In 1988 -- launch any ongoing subtitles in his Wolverine which had which introduced a another Alter ego --"

" Wherever we thought of that -- in the 100 episode does is it."

" My first issues where he had a he had an eye patch and he ran a nightclub manager -- and knew -- but it's awesome and actually netbook. Involved our -- remote -- and -- my -- Shyamalan and later on March semester Bruton is you know kind of you know that and that book had little cheeses and delved into his history and who he was. All but the first real taste that OK we're gonna tell you where he came from more -- a very unique place."

" It's I have but this is in in 1910981. -- two. There's no Internet. And -- beaten -- more regular popular at this point have for everyone and word gets around that there that there's organs being told yes and then at. I don't remember how to route got a house Yahoo! because there was no order here trucking all -- suddenly -- fires -- into this -- my friends read that -- twelve -- The tall word got around -- those we're being told what an accident pages of Marvel Comics presents. But there when dismissed and all we knew we heard about this of indicating they did to yearlong back issue -- sort."

" Now when now I bought but I can't have -- moral compass presents is there and it was anthology title that that featured. Three or four short source port eight page stories by different traders. And they didn't really matter they were just have little stories that word that we're could be no continuity -- as the -- place yet -- is that it. And for some reason that -- surprise attack get Barry Windsor Smith. Who is one of active time one of the great comic rock artists that aren't trying to I don't. Reversal well he rubbed at that point he was known for his art uses an amazing artist and -- this and they in the pages of moral compass for wells issues colleges. Eight pages at a time -- The toll at ten. And I might talk biweekly I think what you get out of him and I remember being -- waiting for the next you Netflix is because the first issue was like just like Wolverine in the claw and like they really iconic imagery and what we saw -- it delved into the moment that he got his adamant itself."

" It's the transition from just the regular mutant who -- the I think the heightened senses that the healing factor to becoming -- really. Will raid are what an axis is known did you get -- meant he gets kidnapped by these scientists. Is giving atom entertainment section and here it says there had a malfunction and it didn't too much and a are not for the -- from candidates of overloaded and it. -- 10000 for the I'll get to that I can't get a little bit but this do this to us -- it in 91 we who served. Thirteen or so yeah. -- a little much news it's really dark it's really did this survey that's really adult in the terms of not. You know it would obviously I don't think porn out right away but it's -- it's adult in terms of -- vacation I remembered not really loving it. And then I like -- at a time I was little I think our president of the artist. And out -- it when -- But this this and this this is about as much organizer guy does is really all you needed you didn't need any more than this you."

" It didn't it didn't explain where it came from and explain any of his passing an eight stage it just shows up at the beginning that a bar. It was really really well."

" Look like this is over exposed yet. And he's it's over use and too many things have been a number when you when you get down with the score he's a great character who. And he's he's a great character is he's -- his -- thing he's got a lot of interesting things about him is uninteresting. Things that are opposing and insulting so."

" He's disappeared like eyes and all these things make jokes about the is cool -- a -- you want to use and that's what happens into the -- oversight and is that it's a part of this is happening Lorena is on. These shield agent William will that I didn't lowlands Little League right now written about right now."

" He is on he's in uncanny X-Men he's going to start a chance then. He's in X force he's in Wolverine self titled. Wolverine weapon acts he's been out Wolverine origins going on which is tell the story of is him and his sons majerus knew vendors set seven title --"

" I had a -- first class it up to either regular certain books that he is our main character of seven which are all in -- on the Internet to account. I'm going to island yeah I did yeah yeah so either eight books written. I assure you it's ridiculous is but the thing is that you look at what's going on you look at what Mark Miller sitting there they're doing -- and the in the Wolverine title -- downloaded story. Which is going to be one of the best source of this year let's -- it done. Usually do in new ventures can you imagine him not on the avengers and -- is not gonna he's -- he's been a great element that's actually what -- that's the war story -- was being involved with that net. And armed whether or not Wolverine origins Wolverine -- the next -- that are really needed I don't know of the university question just me in recently in the past abuses uses children on the -- three which is his daughter. Armed transactions she's like a home owner I and then took second with us and in fact it is his son who's -- the Milwaukee and end all dog vendors and he's and -- managers in the first that it is products and technically the Wolverine MacBook and -- at this time. So he's a little overexposed and legacy indeed but the thing is bad and maybe I'm biased because -- next thing but I never get wolverines fatigue. I think he -- in the nineties but recently I don't -- this is again."

" If you're like -- like you know about men's overexposed and likens it doesn't matter but the thing is if you have a ton of underwriters writing us stories about him. Twenty -- going to be good really really good 300 characters. When you're gonna be average. And it is going to be C sixty -- really boring its derivatives into a lot."

" So yeah April so so if you like Wolverine there's a bunch of different options but if you really Wolverine. Movie coming coming out Hugh Jackman river revising the role that he portrayed the first reaction movies. He was different kind of -- I mean like you can expect him because he's not sure -- but. The big the big question about first excellent movie that was going to be over yet it is who's gonna play it."

" and whether you're really literal. This is different take time and obviously we can't just say in the first excellent movie when you get introduced to a guys in the cage fighting some of it's is perfectly willing candidate they the hair. Yeah you know was it's how you make Henry now I'll ask Erica -- especially a through the years would you look at the Miller version of editing and the Windsor Smith well."

" Looks funny and then weapon accidentally he gets burns called hair goes away and -- hit his -- partly due to feather -- right back. But right back to that haircut and like --"

" Like I. That was what is that he wasn't the only government that haircut today it is. These quicksilver we've rock yeah we're it's there are some -- Just I don't -- willingness. The consumer -- had little bit so in the first movie."

" You nailed it and then and they also never characterization he nailed the bad assets he'd been nailed this is well today and a little weird bunch of teen girls rude and it and -- attractive and sexy. He's always been that way at about part two of the month in the first movie lacked was we never really -- cut -- that we got that second movie and television in the mansion that was awesome. They're gonna we're gonna forget and then now -- with X-Men origins Wolverine. They're finally. Who's directing her. After someone you haven't heard exactly not a good sign right they they but by the trailer already for by the trailer there Clinton they're playing up to the extent form factor that we finally now get jammed it dead pool and -- on it -- like positive like you getting a lot of excellent character that such -- the third one."

" Silver fox that's. This once if you're taking a lot from what products yes -- taken -- which they didn't have an excerpt of anyway it would have a whole lot of stories basically of the season that Bosnian government. -- a government agents take a mandate in a couple of -- American super soldier. And then that's how it becomes who is but beyond that it's I don't. It looks. The -- thing is stronger same -- this week that -- you know that is great because the one thing missing or didn't do right in the I loved his first two episodes but the one thing he didn't do right was able to step. He blew it by casting a wrestler because everyone that you got a ways it is going to be big -- big wrestlers who can't act -- that's what I'm sort of rest."

" So unconcerned that you -- he's the point one him in Iraq and so if and many announcement. I -- always been wrong to take up much with Barack. I -- I was like yeah."

" They said you know for the some apparently -- as a major character and it. We -- have a real actor and it really shouldn't over the first saw me as his seems almost embarrassing and presumably -- barely can zoom out of yeah he's -- really just what should protect your spot. I mean that's a member of looking forward to seeing that -- portion of some of the rest. And it's a question."

" Yeah it looks good I've no idea what I'm not -- the media blackout policy is the trailers -- very excited for resolute as the extent handle numbers so far. Let's hope it's not like accessories so that's what's funny is that we talk about having gone through the kind of feel like when you -- at the top I mean like. And is going to be Wolverine fans out there early is this this is this woman why do you think would like to think it's a popular. Because I think he's that he's that kind of character that you -- want to be he doesn't take any crap from nobody and -- each accessing he's on the right side of things there."

" But investors are having because he's he's he can you have a -- hate. You he'll tell -- helpful as boss --"

" Over the -- the difference between the Wolverine in the -- school in the movie to -- that is will be in the movie -- butt -- in every file and you look at this for your eyes like he gets his butt -- every time and it's slant. Every other policy choice of the victor it's kind of funny that date yeah but it's the subtle difference on the com."

" It seems that when it let's slash 800 and so little -- that sure is trying to prove something that. And I think also they said they wanted him to be he was relatively new -- doesn't make sense of those businesses with the -- to -- I've been an account period it movies semen and north storage and arming its even if World War I -- in the trailer histories -- contradicting the."

" Okay anyway hurts but I'm yet but we've certainly yes I'm sure there are tons of other we'll resource tell us we are favorable reserve was but I can't -- comes and -- Gregory talked about this we -- forums com want to hear from you will resume on the characters people -- people hate. And a lot of lot you know a lot of -- there --"

" You call -- what's not -- fan wasn't the 3262697. You can leave your name and you're number beleaguered number I don't. Bigger name and where you're from and keep it short pieces that they personally answer Smith took the fifth live and let a girl like him a number of -- did you see your email."

" No that's the case of email contact about midway dot com and I can what I com is the web site we don't talk about -- all wolverines stuff all the innocent on the website I think we podcast. Now all the cool stuff we do there."

" Right in which part. But he's blowing up. He's blown up -- up the pieces which part regenerates the body back to come together -- about not always some stories you regenerates from a single piece I don't."

" Well."

And then I like -- at a time I was little I think our president of the artist. And out -- it when -- But this this and this this is about as much organizer guy does is really all you needed you didn't need any more than this you."

Episode 119 - Wolverine

The Vaughan mini series? It was okay, a fun short read but nothing I would go out of my way to get unless you are a huge Wolvie fan.

Interesting about him being the Canadian Cap America.. Did not know that... I enjoy Wolverine in moderation. Old Man Logan seriously rocks, and w/ new Avengers at least he is in the background So it doesn't feel like over kill.. I'll be interested in how the movie is, word on the street isn't good, but i want to give it my own chance. But the knife threw the heard is the Deadpool weapon XI especially when Ryan Reynolds agrees that it isn't the "Real" Deadpol

Yeah I think Cap was "Weapon I" and Logan was "Weapon X (10)", at least according to one of the retcons. There were 8 in between (not all human, some animal testing was done) and at least 5 after.

I totally agree that Barry Windsor-Smith's Weapon X is all you need for his origin.

Now to prepare for 10 other Weapon X-esque titles.

I think the the whole Wolverine being the Canadian answer to Cap is unrelated to the Weapon Plus program. It's more like how Captain Britain is the English answer to Cap, etc.

That being said, I think the coolest thing they have done with the character is tie him to Cap, Luke Cage and all the various Weapon Plus creations and/or spin-offs in that they are all attempts to recreate the success of Cap.

I liked Origin as a stand alone story, it feels way too much like an Elseworlds type of deal to be his real, definitive origin, though.

My favorite Wolverine story to this day is one from way back in the day. It was one of my earliest Graphic Novels. It was called Bloody Choices. For its time (late 80's, very early 90's), considering its mainstream roots, it was a very adult story that was very dark. Maybe I shouldn't have been allowed to read that...
