Wonder Plague
Saturday, March 15th, 2008 running time 32:54
It's convention season once more, and iFanboy invade San Francisco for WonderCon 2008; this time in High Definition. There was comic books, parties, interviews, and fun, but it was not without a cost. We've got Rick Remender, Becky Cloonan, Robert Kirkman, Terry Moore, Mark Bagley, and James Robinson, and one missing host.
WonderCon is not for the faint of heart. While WonderCon is a nice little quaint convention, it is more than it seems. In addition to showing you the convention floor, and interviewing talented creators, iFanboy gives you a glimpse at some great parties at Isotope the Comics Lounge, like the Darwyn Cooke/New Frontier party. Then we lose Conor for a little while, and Josh succumbs to a fierce illness.
Yet this will not stop iFanboy. If you want to find out about James Robinson's take on Superman, Robert Kirkman's abuse of Walking Dead characters, and Mark Bagley's super speedy hands, this episode of iFanboy is your ticket to the convention, and there's no way you can catch the sickness this way.

" This -- fan boys brought to you by graphic audio. Godaddy.com. And Netflix dot com."
" and other tonight fan boy I'm -- I'm Ron and I I'm -- And we're here at the first convention at 2008. This is what a -- Francisco we were here last year we are here again. -- near and dear to your group you want to honest those to be interesting thing I'd just like let's go since going on. The mayor Terry Moore hey hey then it's less idea. -- life poster estrogen paradise the series is all finished. Well I thought I was -- district on the -- you know and follow -- the year but -- it came up another idea I was the one when the announcer came -- I was surprised to see -- soon after fears of and a senate I thought we would have even laid low for a little longer I was -- come -- you know I got artists. Around my god this -- jet -- collection and not a really missed making comics so I you know on this I mean honestly like. Wake up Monday morning they compliment another page today it's -- so that's addictive apparently so the new titles told echo and -- he tells about it if anything. Practically nothing I've I've done a really good job keeping it secret you really have happened if any comes out well and it's in keeping with the story because the story involves. Government -- and everything's. It's kind of like. Ginger rice meets X files meets the fugitive well today it domination it works for me yes that's all the things -- interested -- that there the so on and at this the previous dimensions we heard about needed the marvel work and that -- hasn't -- today is that on. On the -- exit ramp -- not my fault I think. I am in a hurry up both my series. And and Burt Reynolds is just and -- drawing the first book runaways. So we're just kind of backed up at the gate waiting to go in and we're getting all of her books together and we're going to come up and name them just like that they get really frustrating knowing that is done and you just want to share of people and it's -- held up in the marvel processor. You know it's it's one of my first times to finish something really early. I don't normally live and work that way so I feel more like an actor he's finished filming you guys on the seat per year. And then it comes out -- likes it you know so. But yeah I just sit on its its its its like I'm. It's like the runaways and Spiderman lets me think they're still doing stuff. And I'm the only one knows what's going on at -- and then when it comes out of don't want talk to daddy gotta remember early records it'll be so long ago -- appropriate probably a year report. Along and you know."
" I think you can. Pretty you -- them solicited and number three days. And -- the -- the better your new feelings the federal yeah that's part of -- know exactly how to describe it. It. That's right him later Clinton looked -- saying wait a Lil little. On any -- having caught my eye on the spot on talk about a kidnapping spot really -- business and look -- it."
" I am here -- mark actually in his mylar Brinkley noise. Biggie big big announcement few lately. What what's new project you for DCI's. Called Trinity it's with current music in."
" RT there and it's a weekly. Comic sort of like fifty to accept this can be really really good. I'm gonna first after the book I've got a six month lead senate twelve pages of weak. And it's a bout. The Trinity on cement them in a one woman in their place in the DC universe -- As if you gonna draw the scene as a three or Enron and draw them. Plus everybody else. So this is -- after being on on a single book for so long was there any trepidation -- excited to get into another care you know another universe entirely. I'm totally excited guesses this this projects that is pleased almost Frank's notes lots action strait of superhero stuff. It's -- lots character stuff going on and while I drank bad -- captain America. The -- distract. Him. Easy to fix. You actually won't stop drawing a long enough that's how works now people pay money for the stuff sign that the the United trying to do the job -- that's my philosophy of life actually. That's why it's like you know work done it's like United paid to do this. Now at night you're known as one of the fastest artist and comic it's sort of an an an industry that's sort of you know sort of plagued -- this all over the place you just is the your -- talent. If you think I can draw really good comics -- Anyone calling mean eighty that's -- I didn't use the I word exactly. You know I am fairly fast but then I didn't get into the business when he says in this kindly for. And I had real jobs in nine thing nails relive it and you know we're doing concrete slab in Georgia. You know everybody and it to do that drive that then again she's. And it's I know it's like have a real job. And I was by god I'm not the most sound again world I got that and having radio work me and so I'm not the fast I really non monolith that's just a discipline a work about you know sixty hours a week. Which sounds like a lot but hey I get up -- walk -- my -- way you know -- take -- too few times a week. You know lunch is five minutes so I'm not driving an -- work and not you know. It's a really easy sixty hours and back in the day when I was doing like amazing Spiderman and didn't have quite the patriot now in. I was doing eighty hours a week. Of June so. This this is cake -- to -- Is there anything you you miss about if you they've got everything from ultimate Spiderman -- or is there anything you going to miss about drawing that. You know I miss -- Brian -- Brian it's such pleasure worked with in -- such great care you know I leave the book they like the that the book is something really cool came along it was time I've done it long enough. -- you know you get I get it anyway that you cute -- because he guides budgets can you know. -- (%expletive) it's off construction. Could draw anything in me taking a lot of years doing that. You know it's just it's just part of the craft so. Are there any characters in the DC UV you're excited to begin to draw anybody sort of wanted to do for awhile. That incident one woman and everybody else like a diskette to draw like this one -- of Bragman you know Greg Manning isn't really anybody but no -- Hubert threw himself and to me that's really. Kind of cool. You know it's kind of -- of that. And getting to work and almost everybody in the universe. Well thanks very much and which Le -- and a series night I hope you get a chance to walk around and take a break -- a it is -- were like. This year the camera can actually capture the speed which. Yet it's simpler it's. -- can't hear a Becky couldn't native Becky."
" So so we hear sexist Hilliard native New Yorker it says that the -- as a means you know off. It's been. So if that's the so a lot of above that -- demo being Republican -- ago on the said he critical because it -- for -- in the Indy run it Clinton alarm but that's concede that more people he has -- about that are -- an inverted it seems like right. Now coming up right. And when one of the things that I really love that demo was how you see your style varied. From sort this story and you do a lot of work now from vertigo but also of the from among talked about but that's so how do you check and he changes I would be project when you went when you kind of approach it. Just I don't mean it happens SNL like being at times but it's pathetic high you know like look at the store requires cleaner line services a -- one. Gonna -- it whenever it's time to get us and so on so American version of -- canceled and high depressed I didn't read the book but IA but went into the cancellation announcement came out an outpouring from our audience about being canceled anger from it I think -- and I got -- check this -- and see what I've what I missed that. So as American version one of them look forward to for a from more so from vertigo where. Actually they were dancing and you."
" Yeah. This will be out after the announcement."
" Yeah well again two weeks that you could you could tell us about it yet yes I think that's the magic of editing the ethnic. Look at you on its laid out this at at at at. So. Everyone's watching that. And so so he's he's in Japan a little bit of home you vertigo. Date and a supporter of the penalty he need you can do your kind of you know more more than Indy style more than you know black and white and things that does seem like that the place you want to be with your career coming out -- good place for me."
" And so I think every time we appreciate."
" Okay there just like take a break from all the wonder Conor accidentally bit about our sponsor graphic audio. Graphic audio has got these great CD's that are audio representations of -- books -- 52 infinite crisis some really awesome stuff. They can become a fanatic that comes into the future conflicts that this thing is graphic audio. So do get a graphic audio dot net and type -- family in the coupon code you'll get 40% after first purchasing check -- Jewish and the other titles that got. They got all kinds of formats download them get a month CD with -- he wants that's graphic audio dot net coupon code I --"
" Some -- Robert Turkmen yes -- war has gone into any dimension doing great it's it's fantastic I haven't left this corner. It's the early in the weekend -- a very small contingent of me because I haven't seen anything to -- that the it's a bomb we saw I want to talk to you because he's gotten visible fifty coming up. And C seems like a big milestone for the little book that could be a milestone if we can get it out. It's a big -- this at at at Atlanta and isn't working on it right now -- he's responsible one. Some of -- right yes that gives any hints as to what's coming up or what what the big with. Were canceled book it's all right I give them frankly -- issues more than enough. Vehicle stuff coming up. You know he's going to be fights the bad guys there's a big confrontation coming up with his government handler again Cecil and so there they'll be big changes in store there I think I think experience AM mark might be moving back home with his there. That's that's that's a big thing ran out of and I kind of of the bands and with mom. It's it's getting very realistic now isn't it it's it's -- theory and he played video games all day and it's like totally should look at her job and yet but that. Hot pockets and it. And certainly in my life it's and so there you are the big bucket image is walking dead we just. Every time it comes out punches you in the got a little harder is that or sometimes a little lower back. Are you somebody's trying to see how much you can -- what this does. I'm really not even writing at this point on display like that in this issue about this some shocking whatever. I mean it's all it's all stuff I had landed its. -- track try to keep people entertained them that's that's one of the one of the jobs in this business is. And I can't you make people interesting and then in the news you maxima that's that's what you news. It's pretty easy formula. It's just astounding how you can mess them up over and over again in new and inventive ways and there are a lot of characters of that -- that as -- Comes in handy for much anybody's game I guess right yeah it's -- and you didn't -- man has as it has been present along actually issued fifteen it's going to be really -- so you really kind of building your own little -- superhero over CX yes he has a lot different series running right now. And the astounding wolf man and invincible take place this -- universe now. L just appeared in its 48 style -- times have gone. And you're you where you're from marvel ultimate that's coming amendment. Just that is where the recent issue apocalypse is pretty bad -- crazy stuff coming out and crazy but at 93 last issue it's going to be crazy at. They got -- coming up for at marvel line. Particularly -- about now on sale and I probably presidents Jimmy page's well weeks things that things coming along it's going to be really. Really cool really killing me has been working with them has it been like rock rather pretty good bodies that you know we worked well again and your old image fans that's going to be pretty big dream that you're going to run like held -- and I -- it's awesome it's like. Guys talk someone else -- the -- they fight they tell someone else must be able to fight that it's cool man that's comics -- Nice little nice that done revision to the --"
" It's early -- for the veterans nearly noon time we're down man. And it's expensive to."
" This isn't. I think this is."
" The other panel in our. Rivers he's -- This being me you know handle here. -- seems kind of certainly the next question."
" Some rhetoric remainder paid him rent an excellent -- Good to be back in the Bay Area. -- answers the camera on them the camera is -- act. I don't know if I can do this. -- shy so we're gonna you know island's first I'm on camera yeah that's good to be back. During the San Francisco the as you know -- area where we're waiting we're we're twitter we're happy to order guys that are between. So bombed so we last voted here's Tom last year we were fall in love with your agent and stranger on some of them some of those books since then you have blown up. You realize it's now."
" Well since I Bennett severance as -- eating about five meals today. In of those five meals I think bread and cheese have been the majority of each one delicious pizza is an Italian -- of the site so I have put on some -- given that war. Being filmed in the here I'm you know. I appreciate you as husband and Eisner and -- filming me as saying that I've blown up on the camera I am I'm a comic book -- a little fat right now thanks John."
" I wasn't going to miss anything but in the -- but so sulfuric has been doing great and now you're you're working for DC on the Adam I am."
" Yep and -- working working with editor Mike to -- an artist pat all the and it's. It's a lot of."
" So is it weird to be go from doing your own crater on stuff where mentally your little wacky. Two a corporate kind of character you know like -- DC comics in."
" I think. The -- Is sort of it falls right -- it's it's superhero book but it it's wacky of its own right I mean you know it's it's it's definitely not a straight ahead you know super serious in town. You can play it that way because of the science fiction aspect of it can have that sort of you know that's for the -- she wacky side by element. -- Isn't what I've been doing here -- a little bit you know what that's up and in and out. It's been so much fun I didn't I had I had you know no specific affinity for the character -- starting at the that I went back and read. Is that -- actually -- told me to go read. You know the old Gardner fox like the original showcase god and I and I and I did. And then I read all of what -- had done on the run and I got really really into it and then I couldn't be more proud of what I'm doing on the book and pats pats artist just. That is just a list at."
" That so on so that's interest in the user writing you know data for DC which you can't really do everything they want to do but that an image you've got the new crawl space zombie series coming out rich in Italy. So cool little over the top of instinct haven't seen anything comes over the top it it's it gets ugly. So. Suppose so what if you like are you guys is sitting down in front of paper over zombies saying. What can we do that we haven't done it what hasn't been done or how can we grow several about it."
" Not even like it's it's not a conscious like we need to be offensive it's more like we've got a thing broken down and we've got the story be taking care -- and that's about like. This is all entertaining and -- here and trying it it's going to be gorgeous but how do we make it had you know its its horror thing at the shall he be moved that the idea. And we need to enjoy just like the same reason like -- like I have a certain responsibilities storytelling in a book like you know your agent and later the data are now you know worked with -- the publisher. And and stop has to be explains the triplets on visas Bennett and you know it's like it's cathartic in a way we're hearing and I."
" In Sydney office we have studio together it's gonna you know be really funny this. And then we we -- like little school girls in -- ago that we should do that. It's it's nice because it can't be like any arbitrary crazy thing we want to do that -- haven't seen before a comic --"
" So and and crawl -- meant to be that the title and obviously the first story so the future prospects or is going to be as over the top for the United going to be the same they're going to be aboard the next one isn't isn't isn't is similar tone. Now it's it's like it's sort of straight up science fiction -- stuff. -- On a big kind of coming at the launch of that you know I heard you know The Lord of the Rings -- meets the watchman kind of comparison in the but then systematically -- and obviously I'm not I'm not I'm not Al -- nor -- people respected like. Comics with a bed at like wizards hood and cloak analogue cigarette and a pair of panties on the outside. -- I think he can recruiters spotted -- and that's also -- that. A program that's a and so but in the deadly you have a lot of its severe story got a lot of severe archetypes and was it was that intended to lead is I was I was somewhat disappointed I want to see some reform under designed superheroes I didn't. You didn't."
" It's all my -- Like look it's not going to be a perfect book -- in the sense like I I it's completely derivative and it's not."
" It's going to grow I mean like for what it is it's never written eighteen books and that was this you know it's the most challenging thing I've ever done and be. The idea behind it was recognizable characters in a scenario where. Like the idea of doing The Lord of the Rings set up where they have to go play in the hammer instead of just guarding the rain. And and I figured it like this Iraqi People. --"
" The book sold like 20000 copies among the and it's like -- I mean I enjoyed I enjoyed the book it was it was well done and it adds a sense what that look."
" Look that it works I recognize there Hitler limitations and imperfections in the book it's now. But I think it's going to take."
" I really I think she -- is like a thousand times better I think each issue is going to progressively get batter batter as we as we go and I get my head into it and it's like it is."
" It's really easy for people in the Indy -- to disregard superhero stuff. And it's really hard to right. To write it well in the make it believable in in the sense of what you were saying were you -- its original characters are going to be doing stuff like that like Eric went and I haven't you -- dark crystal gigantic. And that's going to be a very unique kind of superhero thing. But the idea -- the -- was its derivative it's recognizable. It's like guys you know you know that -- looks to be don't."
" What you characters together that's supposed to be and it's funny it's like it's it's an exercise -- like you know. And fun I think it was like. -- aliens. And so I -- your limit of number of books that you do yeah yeah I'm officially like that there's there's a freelance fear that people. It's when you have a job and you know get a paycheck every two weeks you don't have here. Freelancing you can never really get comfortable that it's always this idea that like this job July's job. And so you'll have to say yes to everything but it finally got to work so books that I could go like. And I stood there relax my wife's not like it's okay to say no but I figured out -- it's Sunday mornings I don't have been scheduled. But but -- to socialite he would keep you know you have some enjoyment yeah but now I'm I'm really happy it's uses super gratifying actually have the opportunity to --"
" Let me take a second -- go to go to -- com is your place to get domain names registered website services email services whatever you need for all of your Internet needs -- had -- go to dot com music coupon -- Campbell you get 10% after purchase."
" And check -- Netflix at www. Netflix dot com for such a family."
" The -- rate plans starting from for many not enough."
" Didn't have dvds rented mail to your house know who late fees known delivery fees everything you might need at www. Netflix dot com force -- ambush."
" But clearly involve workers these different comments he's also against let family this year. Chris doesn't know -- honors. You country and we haven't happened yet but. I just got this text message just now literally a minute ago that -- I'm here. Where is clear winners here we don't know we canceled the AMBER Alert yet as we -- maybe you know that's alive. That's -- tall bald man with bad beard bet that if it's called 911. We have. -- We had to -- so they announced his players. When she's all right have. I advisers -- your -- him something. That's in the -- But the give any comment any comment at all you know."
" I am here James Robinson the newly appointed -- department. You I'm very well I doing on. Superman as a character that a lot of people who struggled with finding something new one -- what's the take -- the plan to take them on the character. Well I think that one of the things that maybe people do is they get so into his powers -- his -- low that -- spaghetti human beings. We'll try and give him humanity back whilst. Also making -- this to -- action heroes that I don't know if it's fair to say again but I would like that. Give him lamp post entitlement aspect of it being action heroes. I'm also Lou. Sort of fascinated by the fact in my opinion the difference between Batman and Superman. Is that -- thing. With Batman he's he's Batman pertaining to be. -- And I think -- Superman he's actually fantasy -- poisoning plot and he's pretending to be the greatest superhero time. -- would bring that she humility humanity back to him it was so. Myself and Jeff Jones. Intensity. Q. Jamie -- lowest lying -- can. That. Trinity goes to taxes. Separate interesting identities. Would -- crypto back McCain. Fun little side side did that -- department and the well a cement found but not an accident -- quiet not sort of and not. Delight -- to appoint you lose track of the central character being Superman. And and also have a book that at the same time that you can might be read an issue read it now is building towards something ignorant or site and on the economy in your book is going to be in a woman with -- Jeff Johnson's action comics. Yes in that will will have. Two separate story lines going out covering it wants a -- money his but they'll be much Moya reference back and forth and supporting supporting things plying between the two books. And we have a couple of like being. Crossovers the way I think too much for back and forth kind of kind of thing -- you know its -- more than ten years on end and Jack Knight is still a character that really touches people is that is that surprising two dollars it it's hot -- touching them means. I put my -- two it was one of the things on his fist nose that's but doesn't it was a Chicago writer and that was just about become one and I remember. Talking -- Morrison he isn't a few years ahead of me. In the in the whole time. And he members signed if he doesn't give of yourself and really kind of like -- like things it's as roar and really she can. You just sort of playing around with with with writing writing fiction of any kind activity tried to Mike -- a sort of semi autobiographical. A purpose it was going to ask him how much of yourself as well. A helluva lot actually in a lot of people -- a -- jacket that well I'm foot yes but if that was an unintentional. But yes I mean intensive. The relationship with parents in terms of feeling and some of his feelings and thoughts and things disinterested in. And his suit of -- to what's clarity. When he didn't need to be has he been there anymore. It's sort of a of a Mike most of metaphor for me sort of maturing as a person leaving home when my life so it's Lou. What's your question very much partly. Thing that struck me in when I was reading storm there's this DC universe is all about that you know fondness on Wednesday it feels to me like -- were you. Starting something new battery you reference to and from the past when my fist came up with the idea for Stoneman. And I sold a fact that. Every other. My age donate hero -- ID. But has has some degree of popularity of the present -- But stomach as it was faulted. And it was clear to me the reason is that there wasn't any says the lineage between momentary departs the toast the next ball. We with the -- man there was at least crossover team up something -- that cost that it acknowledged that these two characters knew each other. So. -- that is the the the sort of skeleton of what I was trying to do the the other filling in. Filling in between Ted Knight and Jack night with all of the stuff in between just -- of my postal gold thing I tried to do and I think that's that's part of what my eight. The focus success. Is that you felt you. Everything that you would read before suddenly mats that are supposed to beings they sort of narrative driftwood that so many of these stories can become. On our I've heard rumors there is there any truth that fact it will see Jack met again. It it that there is a fight possibility it's over the future that there that there isn't I'm told. Graphic novel but I might. But nothing is it in the forefront -- that's not the the unnamed project that you -- not. But. One of there will be -- installment in this nine. Nine and project is about Jack."
" Behind a Segovia panel room meeting rooms with the companies from an image -- announcement books beta team thinks -- general announcements happen. And that it usually panels on all throughout the it's pretty quiet -- convention for news."
" The biggest -- that was it and there's going to be another announcement of the concert in about something else happening. And it just extremist longer than if that's all the was we're gonna make an announcement soon that's announcement that thank you for coming. Last year. Question this is the end of Connor. And I can relate you know I think -- that's ever -- Everything is four blocks away. Where once it was ten miles. Of the new city -- the looks much much damn life. I give -- my socks because I can't feel my legs. It's crazy you everywhere. The screen he constantly is a man singing it's obvious ones -- know mullah morality whatsoever."
" And many went away that he came back kept screaming. It was like to be scratching inside of my brain."
" And it rains. And keep them parties at night -- can't eat you can't sleep because they go to the party since then you get the next morning did you gotta -- works for more blocks away."
" I just never called. It was supposed to be like this."
" Well another wonder -- in the books on the demand now on this year's Josh not me this one does this was -- The rough way to start to con season due to president he'd been. It rattled and -- has been put forward and I would add five more feet today I I can't play of some kind of an -- on suddenly in fact it's super bug. We we have got a lot of sleep but we talk comics and had a good time so it was all worth in the and then. -- Com perhaps rather you know the interest and if you have an idea of -- convention we should go check out calls on our voiced a lot of -- 88 and boys three to 6697. Make sure you go to I got this. Makes you -- I've been employed dot com. To talk about this is that it's there on the continent we have a plea of books and everything. Or you go to the forms revision three dot com slash -- bad boy. I feel terrible for the good of the good news is is that New York on residential April say no rest. And there has cold remedies post those already known him for -- Carol Josh Smith and hangover remedies. But. He's --"
" And and down."
" This -- fan boys brought to you by graphic audio. Godaddy.com. And Netflix dot com."

Episode #61 - "Wonder Plague" [Discussion]
Watch the show and tell everyone what you think
***
If you've watched today's episode of iFanboy - Wonder Plague - then you may have noticed something different. The video is sharper! The colors are brighter! Our retched visages are clearer! That's because of our first big announcement - iFanboy has gone high definition!
We've taken our first step into a larger technological world and its very exciting. Many people have written in asking if we were going to go HD with our show and our standard answer has been "be patient"... well, be patient no more.
The big question for you the viewer - what does this mean for me? Well, it means a better quality video. The flash players on the website are not in HD (though you will notice that they look better because the source material is HD). In order to watch the show in HD you'll have to download the episode directly (right click and choose "Save As..." and we'll provide the link on the episode page weekly). Or you can subscribe to the HD feed in your favorite podcast player of choice (it's not in iTunes yet, but will be early next week, we'll keep you posted and add the link when its in iTunes)
So now you can download the HD version to watch on your HD television (if you have the proper hookups etc)! Yes, iFanboy has now invaded your living room in all our bearded glory. Look for more ways to get iFanboy in your living room soon as well!
Tune in tomorrow night for our second big announcement! And it's a big one (in a little package).

Don't think Robinson likes talking to the media much. The guy is a total rock star though. So badass. I want to be James Robnson.

I love when you do shows like this, especially when you start off with Terry Moore. Wait what? Terry Moore is writing Runnaways and Ramous is drawing it... wait rewind and re-listen to that.
